A Resolution Honoring the Life and Career of Evelyn ‘Evy’ Dubrow

WHEREAS, Evelyn Dubrow, for more than fifty years was a tireless advocate, an eloquent spokeswomen and powerful voice for labor, women’s rights’ and educational equality; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Dubrow, who was born in Passaic, NJ and was the daughter of a union carpenter, was a graduate of New York University’s School of Journalism in the 1930’s and joined her first union, the Newspaper Guild, when she was hired by a Patterson, NJ newspaper; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Durbow, began full-time union work, as a secretary in the Textile Workers Union and as an assistant to the president of the New Jersey Congress of Industrial Organizations and was one of the organizers of Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) in 1947 and worked for the ADA; and

WHEREAS, in 1956, Evelyn Dubrow was hired by the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) where she eventually became the union’s legislative director and a vice president from 1977 until her retirement in 1997; and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Dubrow founded the Coalition of Labor Union Woman (CLUW) and elected National Vice President at its second biennial convention in 1982 and served as Vice President until 1997; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, President Clinton awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom calling her, a “tiny woman, larger than life who was renowned for her grace, candor, and integrity, who has earned the respect of opponents and allies alike;” and

WHEREAS, Evelyn Dubrow, a member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for over 20 years, was honored for her dedicated service to the Party in 1997 when she was named Member Emeritus; and

WHEREAS, on June 20, 2006, Evenly Dubrow passed away at the age of 95;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the DNC honor Evelyn ‘Evy’ Dubrow with this resolution celebrating her life and contributions to the Democratic Party and to the citizens of the United States as an untiring advocate for workers’ and women’s rights; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the DNC, in honor of Evelyn Dubrow, recommit itself to continuing her efforts to demand social justice and rights for all working Americans.
