Honoring the Life and Career of Senator Eugene “Gene” McCarthy

Resolution Honoring the Life and Career of Senator Eugene “Gene” McCarthy
WHEREAS, Eugene McCarthy had a long, distinguished career as a public servant for the state of Minnesota and was a leader in the fight for peace and justice; and
WHEREAS, Eugene McCarthy served as a technical assistant for military intelligence in World War II and served admirably for four years; and
WHEREAS, Eugene McCarthy was elected to the United State House of Representatives from Minnesota’s Fourth District and served with distinction for ten years; and
WHEREAS, Eugene McCarthy was elected to the United States Senate in 1959 and served until 1973; and
WHEREAS, Eugene McCarthy sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1967 because of failed Vietnam policy and became a leading voice for the anti-Vietnam War movement; and
WHEREAS, he showed that not even the immense power of the presidency can withstand the opposition of a public aroused by someone speaking out against what he saw as an immoral action of his government; and
WHEREAS, Eugene McCarthy was a prolific policy author and respected poet; and
WHEREAS, on December 10, 2005, Eugene McCarthy passed away, 35 years after retirement from public service;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Democratic National Committee honor Senator Eugene McCarthy by commemorating the service of a man, who by holding himself to his principles and never retreating from what he thought was right, was among Minnesota’s greatest Senators.
