A Resolution on the Retirement of US Senator Paul S. Sarbanes

WHEREAS, the Honorable Paul S. Sarbanes, Maryland’s Senior United States Senator and the longest serving US Senator from that state will retire at the end of this Congress, and

WHEREAS, Senator Sarbanes, the son of Greek immigrants – learned early on from his parents the value of hard work, commitment to family values, and the importance of being an active member in society; and

WHEREAS, during his four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, and nearly 30 years in the United States Senate, he has always worked to ensure two essential principles of our nation: opportunity and fairness, to ensure that every American, and not just a privileged few, should be able to count on these principles; and

WHEREAS, Paul Sarbanes’ tenure in the Congress has often brought him to the center of great national issues, in which his colleagues relied on his intellect, ability, integrity and judgment to help them steer a path on the most difficult and controversial issues of our times, and

WHEREAS, the groundbreaking Sarbanes-Oxley Act will remind future generations of his efforts to safeguard the American economy for all in the wake of the Enron and WorldCom collapses, restoring investor confidence in the financial markets and avoiding future company failures where working families lose jobs and retirement funds; and

WHEREAS, Senator Sarbanes has always been a champion of the ideals and values of the Democratic party, and has worked tireless campaign after campaign to elect its candidates and advance its goals; and

WHEREAS, the working people of Maryland and of the entire nation will lose one of their ablest champions in the Senate upon the retirement of Senator Sarbanes;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), that its congratulations be offered to U.S. Senator Paul S. Sarbanes on the occasion of his retirement; and

BE IT FURTHER, that he be thanked for his many years of outstanding service to the people of Maryland, the entire nation, and the Democratic party; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the DNC offers Senator Sarbanes its best wishes as he leaves the Senate and its hopes that his retirement from the Senate will not mean his retirement from opportunities to continue his efforts in behalf of the great causes for which he has already labored long and hard.
