Largest North American Islamic Group Elects A Woman
The Islamic Society of North America elected Ingrid Mattson to serve as the first female president of the organization. The organization represents Muslim associations for youth, college students, and engineers amongst others, in addition to providing support to North American mosque chaplains. Mattson takes office days before the group's annual convention in Rosemont, Illinois this Friday.
"This is a community that can choose to be whatever it wishes to be, unlike many other Muslims throughout the world who don't live in democratic societies," Mrs. Mattson said. "I think it shows what Muslims can do and would like to do."Although she intends to fully serve her duties as President, leading the society's committees and executive boards, she does face a challenge to her religious customs by accepting this new position. American Muslims have different opinions on the role of women in the religion, having no female imams, or clerics at mosques. Her challenge comes with invitations to lead public prayer, which she has agreed to not do, only leading public ritual workshops for women.
