Listen Up: Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers

Posted by on September 27, 2006 at 03:15 PM

This week's DNC Podcast features award-winning film director Robert Greenwald. Greenwald discusses his newest work, Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers.

Iraq for Sale is a scathing documentary that exposes the record profits made off the war in Iraq by private corporations with Republican friends in Congress and the Republican decision makers that made it happen.

From the podcast:

"Blackwater, CACI, Titan, Halliburton - all have stocked their Boards of Directors or their high corporate levels with former military, former CIA, and former people in the legislative process so that they get a kind of protection against oversight. [As a result,] they give Halliburton millions of dollars. [Blackwater owner] Eric Prince's family has given $2.5 million to the Republican Party in the past couple of years. That buys them a kind of protection they should not be buying. There should be transparency and there should be oversight."

Greenwald also discussed the devastating impact the war profiteering has on soldiers on the ground in Iraq.

"Soldier after soldier was saying to me 'This is demoralizing to us, to work right next to someone who is doing exactly the same job and getting paid three and four times as much.' Outsourcing was never meant to do that...that takes a terrible toll on the troops."

This is an interesting topic and all and I have seen the movie and it is great, BUT

What the hell are our Senate Democrats doing? I am hearing they are caving on the torture amendment that is currently being debated in the Senate. A vote is likely tomorrow.

Correct me if I am wrong but this bill grants the President retroactive immunity not to mention suspends habeus corpus and allows torture to continue.

If the Democrats won't vote against this, who will????

One person i won't be surprised that might vote on this bill is Joe Lieberman and if he does, then welcome to the Senate Ned Lamont.

Why is no one covering this?

HR 6166: Military Commissions Act of 2006. - To amend title 10, United States Code, to authorize trial by military commission for violations of the law of war, and for other purposes.

In case anyone is curious, it passed the House, 253-168 (12 not voting). Voting by party-

Republican: 219-7
Democratic: 34-160

34 Democrats voted in favor of this bill. Roll call vote is here

This "compromise" was made last week. Every damn Democrat starting with Harry & Nancy should have lined up, shouting to anyone who would listen that torture is wrong. Gutting habeas corpus is wrong.

Is it really so hard for our party to stand up for such a fundamental value? For heaven's sake, do the right thing.

Anybody know what happened to the page on the DNC's site that had all the quotes of idiot repugs in the 90's saying Clinton was wagging the dog in trying to attack bin laden? I can;t find it anywhere and I really want those quotes. Thanks!

I wish someone would please tell me how in the world we are going to pay for this war when the bills come do??? This war that george bush made is costing the American tax payer 8 billion a month. Oh I'm sorry. I'm not an American if I ask questions. So go ahead and invade anybody you want. Spend as much as you want. I'll shut up and be a good American.

Iraq for sale?
Heck, I thought it was already bought and sold before they even invaded.
Wonder how much the Bushies made parting out a country.

The republican leadership pretends that cutting taxes will make us more fiscally secure in the long run. But pulling back the Troops, perchance to Afghanistan, and plan our next level of support to Iraqis instead of simple, brutish force, seems to be fly over their heads. I smell oil money in the air!

And just think - two years ago gas was going for $1.89 a gallon. Yeah - I really am gonna vote for people who jacked energy prices on me!!!

The BBC website http://news.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5393964.stm, this morning has an interview with Bob Woodward, who made two rather interesting statements.
The first is that the administration is covering up the real extent of the insurgency, and that many incidents are not being reported.
The second is that Henry Kissinger has become a frequent visitor to the White House and that Dick Cheney told Woodward that Kissinger was working for Bush.
I thought that Iraq was looking an awful lot like Viet Nam.

Remember FDR's famous quip about "Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod"?
How about the reason Haliburton etal are not being investigated is because of the three stooges - Moe, Larry, and Curly - AKA Frist, Hastert, and Cheney.
Family values start at our home with honesty and integrity along with the golden rule at the top of the list. It's not all about sex.

I live in N. Mississippi and see on TV from Memphis the ads for the race, Ford & Corker, which to me are way out of bounds for Mr Corker. I hope Ford stays the course and does not stoop as low as the Rupublicans are doing.
If I still lived in TN I would vote for Ford JR based on the TV ads alone. Please stay the course and not fall in that trap of misleading TV ads.

Outside of campaign rhetoric (read lies), what do the Republicans have to do with ethics, social responsibility, morality, valuing human life, or any other religious value?
As far as I can see, their Golden Rule is "He who has the most gold rules".
These people are morally bankrupt.
Sex is one of the symptoms, not the problem. The problem is the Republican immmoral "anything to win, gaining power justifies the means" approach to politics.
The Christian Conservatives, who keep supporting the Republicans, are either thoroughgoing hypocrits or the biggest suckers on the planet.
