50-State Strategy Puts Faith In Action in Oregon

Yesterday, Blue Oregon highlighted Democratic Party-funded ads that are airing on Oregon radio stations. A full time faith outreach staff person was also funded with Democratic Party money.
There's been a lot of attention paid here at BlueOregon to the growing sector of "Faithful Democrats" nationally and in Oregon. Jim Wallis visited in September, and contributors Jeff Alworth and Steve Bucknum have explored the role of religion in politics. At the DPO Convention this summer, a religious outreach workshop was organized and there is now a faith caucus in the state party.
Now it seems that House Democratic candidates Rob Brading and Chuck Lee have both been running radio ads on Christian radio stations - discussing their own faith and how it informs their values.
You can go to
the Oregon Democratic Party's website to listen to the ads.

I don't listen much to Christian radio. Well, never mostly. Does it get a lot of Dem attention?

No, but it should. Altworth and Bucknum may be starting a trend.
It's about time the Democrats started to realize that their true base is the majority of people, who are people of faith, any faith, who are hard working, family oriented, and deserving of respect.
All the Republicans are doing in their spin is putting these people down, calling them "Joe Six-packs" while disrespecting their faith and values, by using hot button issues, to trap people into single-issue voting.
After all, if the Republicans believed so strongly in these "issues" don't you think, with the Bushies in power and their rubber-stamp Congress, they should have already gotten these issues dealt with by now?
Yeah, and they'll respect us in the morning. Unnnh Hunh!

Well, I think its a smart strategy because people who listen to those stations go along with what they are told as long as magic words like "our values", "Christian" and "Conservative" and "faith" are used. It will however make it harder to differentiate between US and THEM on some basic issues of separation of church and state though.

This party often talks about faith. A more effective dialogue could focus on belief in action. To simply use the rhetoric of embracing people of faith is too broad to attract born-again Chritians, like myself.
A secular-humanist has faith. Al-Qaeda leades have faith. New Orleans Saints fans have faith. Evangelicals have faith but also look for belief in action.
The 50-state strategy can look for these pockets of people and find candidates that will represent belief in action. We also want a candidate that does not treat us as un-thinking absolutists. Speaking on a Christian Radio station about puting belief into action should work. It worked for Tim Kaine last year in Virginia.
