TN-Sen: The Latest Low for the GOP
Posted by Tracy Russo on October 26, 2006 at 11:07 AM
Over at DailyKos, Georgia10 has a good update on the GOP's latest stunts in Tennessee, where their candidate is in a tight race with Rep. Harold Ford, Jr. Of course, rather than running on the issues, the GOP is running a campaign based on a combination personal attacks and divisive wedge issues meant to appeal to the worst in people.
MSNBC:
The Republican National Committee said Wednesday it was taking off the air an attack ad that critics said was a racial slur against Democratic Tennessee Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr., one day after the party's chairman said he saw nothing wrong with it.
I wouldn't necessarily view the fact the ad is no longer airing as a victory; after all, the RNC got exactly what it wanted. As it did with the Daisy-double "vote republican or die" ad, it shelled out a limited amount of money for a limited ad buy while relying on an all-too-willing press to provide hours and hours of free exposure for its lies. And so, the RNC got its racist message out to the voters of Tennessee, and unfortunately, that message will resonate with some voters.
Dirty tricks. Cheap tricks. Nothing new from a cornered GOP.
Over the next 12 days, things are likely to only get worse.

Does anyone know about the "tool on the main page" that helps you send letters to editors at newspapers on a national basis. A nice blogger last evening suggested that I use that tool to send a letter I have sent to the Denver papers, but I am over the age of 50, so I do computers on a "monkey see, monkey do" basis. Any help would be appreciated.
OK, it is painfully obvious that the GOP strategy is now to say that all Democrats "Don't get the Stakes" and will let the Terrorists go.
IF, and i don't think you really do, but IF you want the Dems to take BOTH houses, you must get EVERY SINGLE DEM who is runing to SAY "I WILL HUNT DOWN AND KILL OSAMA BIN LADEN"
For the love of GOD, get going, you morons!
NO on the Border Security Bill
NO on making the Republican tax cuts permanent
NO on eliminating the marriage penalty
NO on eliminating the death tax

HERE IS THE DEMOCRATIC VOTING RECORD!!!!

Wasn't Mehlman tied to the Abramoff scandal and also that vote supression phone scam trial in New England?
Why isn't he under investigation by the Justice Department?
We need a new Attorney General who is more concerned about enforcing existing laws instead of finding ways for the President to break them.
fightingdonkey,
Just condense your remarks down to a few paragraphs and it should go through the tool much easier. Also, the newspapers are far more likely to publish a shorter comment.
You had a really good explanation about how a trickle up tax policy affects more people and spreads the good economic fortune around the economy. Average citizens would understand how it works the way you described it.
If you can't get that gizzmo to work. Just send your letter by mail (sometimes I think it gets a lot more closer attention by the editors that way.) I'd love to see it published before the election.
Good luck.
The types of campaigns that intentionally use derogatory remarks to insult the opposition is starting to decrease in it's effectiveness. Most people are starting to view it like the jerk who has to put down other people to make himself feel better. There is a good article about social reception to political types of marketing campaigns here.
Thanks,
Brad

Gorepublican,
What's your point?
All the legislation you cite relates to tax cuts for the rich, elaborating on existing legislation that the President refuses to enforce, mindless declarations of morals that Republicans leaders have demonstrated they don't intend to exercise, imposing religious beliefs on others not of your faith, and granting excessive powers to a moron who can't handle the load he's carrying already.
None of this legislation solves any of the problems we face in this country or the world today. It just weakens the nation economically, militarily, and constitutionally. Shame on you for intimating that any of this legislation could be effective or make our country stronger. Don't act so dumb; I know that you know better.
Now go somewhere else and lick your wounds. Your side had their chance and wasted it...and the nation's treasury.
Unfortunately, Ford said today:
"I do not support the decision today reached by the New Jersey Supreme Court regarding gay marriage. I oppose gay marriage, and have voted twice in Congress to amend the United States Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage. This November there's a referendum on the Tennessee ballot to ban same-sex marriage - I am voting for it."
It's kind of hard to see how he is better than the Republican. I don't agree with racism and I am sick of homophobia. Really, what makes him better -other than the D behind his name?
It doesn't, Cate. It simply doesn't.
While at least Bill Clinton waited until getting into office to stab us in the back, today's Dems are openly stabbing us in the back BEFORE ever getting in office.
You know, the abused always think the abuser will change. Let's wait until we get the abuser in office, let's reward their bigoted ways, then let's try to change him/her.
You don't discipline a whiny child by giving him/her the cookie. Sometimes they need a good tail whoopin' to understand that you don't show your butt in public and embarass those you're accountable to.
I'd like to see the DNC produce a nationwide ad highlighting the fact that the Republicans are running personal smear attack ads nationwide, in contrast to Democratic campaigns that are focused on issues, reality, hope and optimism. People need to understand that the personal attacks against their local candidates aren't localized, but instead are the modus operandi of the RNC machine nationwide. If the DNC could get that message across, wouldn't people take these attack ads a lot less seriously??
Huffington Post has learned that Terry Nelson, a second producer of the racist Corker ad and a consultant to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Wal-Mart, is to be fired by Wal-Mart for his role in producing the ad.
Karl Rove's protege, Terry Nelson & Sen. Tom McCain
In the behind-the-scenes hunt for 2008 campaign talent, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has bagged a big one.
Terry Nelson, who served as national political director for President Bush's reelection race in 2004, has signed on as a senior adviser to McCain's Straight Talk America political action committee
Nelson was implicated in the infamous New Hampshire-phone jamming scandal [in 2002] and he was
an unindicted coconspirator in the political money-laundering case which ended Tom DeLay's career

In addition, the indictment claims that Ellis and TRMPAC, “did tender, deliver, andcause to be tendered,” a check signed by John Colyandro (but filled out by Ellis) to Terry Nelson, a
representative of the Republican National Committee, for $190,000

LOL.. McCain wont fire Nelson
Shameless, gutless, the true Republican Party shows itself in Tennessee- should we expect anything else from the Willie Horton and Swiftboat Party?
Mr. GoreRepublican produces a fine List of Democratic positions. I heartly endorse the entire list! That you for adding serveral additional items for my own webpages! Yet you forgot some of my favorites:
NO on bankruptcy reform.
NO on Torture Bill.
NO on Social Security 'privatization'.
Mr. GoreRepublican just might want to note who are the readers of these blogs.... it is very helpful for the opposition to spill out it's attack positions on our site!
If the controversial ad that was being run by the Republicans about Congressman Harold Ford, Jr has "been pulled" as I heard said this evening, someone better tell the Fox News Channel (CH47/FOXN) in Phoenix, because they're still showing it here. Pls get this ad off ALL THE CHANNELS. It is deplorable, an insult to Congressman Harold Ford, Jr and to Americans of all colors!
Let us be careful in seeing racist and homophobic overtones in every ad. Witness the so-called slave drum-beats in the Republican anti-Ford ad which were simply military drums. We end up looking silly and overly-partisan which is how Republicans seek to portray us. Moderation gang. As they say in football: "victory is near, you're crossing the 5 yard line. Don't spike the ball yet".
I live in South Carolina, but I saw some of that ad while watching a segment of Larry King Live that featured the Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. And, I found the ad in extremely bad taste, and I think that the woman who was in it saying to Harold Ford, Jr. "call me", showed herself to be the slut that she is! Because no self-respecting woman would have been in an ad like that.
I thought that the ad was racist, and designed to appeal to the worst in the people of Tennessee. The Republicans rely on the fact that some southerners (and especially those that are over the age of 50) to let ad like that resinate with them. But, luckily, there is also a younger generation (those under 30) in Tennessee (just like in every other state) that was not raised with as much racism in their hearts as the older generations were. So, I think that as far as the south, that a lot of our hope lies in the younger generations (starting with the one that is under 30 right now).
I think that even if Ford does lose this election, then it will still only be a matter of time before Tennessee does elect a black Senator. And, that goes for the rest of the southern states (including South Carolina) too.
And, I would like to say to Habsman that I think that the ad was definitly racist in nature and designed to appeal to the worst in southern people (who after all, have a history of being racist against black people, and especially black men).
So, don't give me that, "let's be careful in seeing racist overtones in ads stuff", BECAUSE WE SEE WHAT IS ACTUALLY THERE!!!!!!!!!!!
Harold Ford doesn't know how to separate Church and State. If he gets elected, with his God, Guns, and NO gays views, it will be just like electing a republican. He embraces more view that are conservative then some conservatives.
I think Ford should embrace the commercial. He should film his own with that commericial playing in the back ground and mention the issues confranting Americans today:
3,000 Americans dead in Iraq
Thousands of Iraqi civilians killed.
Misleading the American people to justify the war
The changing face of the war in Afghanistan
Osama Bin Laden still free.
America's dependence on foreign oil.
Record gas prices.
Domestic surveillance.
Stem Cell research.
Federal judges being labeled as "activist"
Port security
The federal defecit.
The trade deficit.
The exportation of middle class jobs.
Tax cuts for the rich.
Increased college tuition fees.
No child left behind.
Medicare prescription drug costs.
Immigration.
Privatizing Social Security
The suspension of Habeus Corpus
Torture & rendition.
Guantanamo
FEMA
Nuclear Iran
Nuclear North Korea
Jack Abramoff
K-Street
Congressman Foley
The decline of the US standing in the world.
"You get the government you deserve... and if you decide any or all of these issues on the basis of this commercial, then you deserve Coker."
thank god that kerry finally showed emotion.
those of us from the south expect that.
this was missing from the last election. hopefully it will make a difference.

I am a lifelong democrat and I see these ads by Bob Corcker and the republicans , and it makes me sick that these so called we are for the people persons spout their venomous lies about the only party and candidates that do truely care about the poor and disadvantaged . I Remember when Mr. Bill Clinton took office we all had jobs and lived good . Now we have an inept administration that uses a useless war to justify their lies . We are in so much debt that our great great grandkids will be paying this off thanks george bush and the republicans . I urge everybody to get out and vote Harold Ford Jr and every one in our party because it is time to take back America and take care of the poor and elderly and especially our future .
I have always known that politics was a dirty business, but until this 2006 mid term election I didn't know just how dirty. Republicans have used every lie and cheap trick imaginable to mislead voters into thinking that if a Democrat gets elected America is going to hell in a handbasket. But let us remember that it was a Democrat who brought America out of the darnkess of the Depression and made it prosper. It was a Democrat who introduced the Civil Rights Act, a Democrat who helped end a horrable World War that would have cost hundreds of America lives and finally it was a Democrat who challenged us as Americans when he said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." Well,it's time we did something for our country. It's time we rid America of the misleading tactics of a group of people whose sole purpose is to keep us afraid and in the dark. The greatest weapon of Republican conservatives is fear. We can no longer afford to be afraid and ignorant about our government.
I find it hard to believe that those so supportive of life such as conservatives and Right to Life groups could be so opposed to federal funding of stem cell research. Using embryos that would other wise be destroyed for research that someday could help cure diseases sich as Parkinsons and Alzhiemers and disabling spinal cord injuries is also preserving and giving life. And isn't that what this research is all about? I mean don't the individuals striklen with these crippling conditions deserve a right to life also?
Conservatives, supportive of life???
This is an actions speak louder than words situation, where the actions of the Republican conservatives and "right to lifers" have proven to care little if anything at all about human life.
They only push the hypocritical "right to life" agendas to con good moral people into voting for their immoral selves.
If they are so "right to life" why did they start a war which has killed thousands by lying about the reasons?
Why do they support the death penalty?
Why did they ignore the poor, elderly, and disabled during the Katrina crises until the normally right-leaning media, brought it to public attention?
Why do they support the "free" trade agreements which has taken jobs away from our people and caused so much economic chaos in other countries that their poor are willing to risk their lives to come here and work for sweatshop wages?
If they are so concerned about the "right to life", why are they continually supporting the drug industry's exploitation of the infirm with over-priced medicines, on which the drug companies spend more for advertising than they ever did on federally subsidized research?
Why are they ignoring the murder of millions of black Christian, and pagan Africans by Islamic Arab militias who are trying to gain control of African oil resources?
Why are they refusing to support conservation measures to reduce the effects of pollution on global warming, which is rapidly reaching the point where it will kill billions? As a matter of fact the recurring droughts which have killed millions in Africa are a sign of what the future will bring if we don't do something.
"Right to life" No way, no how!
As a black man, I was hurt that there was such a big fuss about the fact that the girl in the Ad was white. The fact that it was noticed, was the true sign of racism to me. I just thought it was a dumb ad. Hopefully there is no racism involved on the part of the folks making a ruckus and it is just the usual trying to scare us into never leaving the skirts of the Democratic mama party who will "saves us all". You should all take a page from Harold Ford's book. Look how he reacted with class and still managed to bash the ad on its merits.
