Democrats Ground Game Strong Heading Into Final Month
This past Saturday Democrats kicked-off the final month of the election with more than 600 voter contact activities across the country. Democrats contacted three million voters during the DNC's third national organizing day, demonstrating the strength of the Democratic ground game heading into the final days of the campaign.
In Ohio alone, Democrats made 100,000 calls to voters who cast ballots in 2004 but did not vote in the last mid-term election. Candidates up and down the ballot participated, including Democratic Senate Candidate Sherrod Brown, Secretary of State Candidate Jennifer Brunner, State Auditor Candidate Barbara Sykes, and Congressional Candidates Zack Space (OH-18) and John Cranley (OH-1). In New Jersey, DNC Vice-Chair Congressman Mike Honda campaigned with Congressional candidate Linda Stender (NJ-7) and hundreds of supporters rallied in support of Democratic candidates, including Sen. Menendez, at a post-canvass rally.
Arizona Democrats contacted some 10,000 voters with Governor Janet Napolitano and Congressman Pastor kicking off GOTV walks. In Oregon, Democrats from Portland to Josephine to Wasco distributed 25,000 door hangers with the Democratic message for a new direction and contacted more than 10,000 voters by phone. Congressman Earl Blumenauer and Congressman Peter DeFazio kicked off walks for Governor Ted Kulongoski.
"Across the country, Democrats are energized and ready for a new direction, one that puts the interests of the American people ahead of the interests of the Republican Party," said Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean. "We've been laying the groundwork for over a year now and those early investments are clearly paying off as we head into the final stretch."
Saturday's events built on the success of the DNC's earlier national organizing days. In April, 10,000 volunteers knocked on one million doors. In July, we contacted two million targeted voters. On Saturday, Democrats also launched the DNC's toll-free national voter assistance hotline, 1-888-DEM-VOTE, which is now available to people across the country to answer questions about voting.
