In Florida, Serious, Serious Problems

In the FL-13 election, there have been serious problems with voting machines that seem to have disenfranchised thousands of voters and handed the election to the GOP candidate. Yesterday they audited the machines and the problems were clearly evident.

From the Herald Tribune, via DailyKos.com

An audit of the county's touch-screen voting machines Tuesday found several discrepancies, most prominently in the disputed 13th Congressional District race, but state elections officials said it is unclear whether the problems were the result of human or machine error.

All four voting machines that officials used to simulate the Nov. 7 election had miscounts, and three of them had miscounts in the District 13 race [...]

The voting machines tested Tuesday were among those that the state programmed for the county, but were not used in the Nov. 7 election.

State officials selected four precincts, and had their workers vote to reflect proportionately how votes were cast in the actual election [...]

Of the 251 ballots cast, five additional votes were counted for Jennings, including three extra votes in one precinct. There were also miscounts in five other races.

"Most likely it's human error," said Jenny Nash, spokesperson for the State Division of Elections.

Markos and Georgia10 have more.

Speaking of science, this is worth, I think, immediate e-mailing to your Senators and Reps:

The Environmental Protection Agency libraries are at this moment being gutted by the Bush administration. The libraries are being closed as we speak.

Scientists who hold valuable records about pesticides and the environment are being forced to literally put these documents in the shredder.

On Al Franken's show on airamerica today, we were told that not only is vital material being shredded, but in one EPA library they were forced to sell off $40,000 worth of office furniture for $327.

It is happening now in an attempt to dismantle these libraries (so important for keeping data about polluters) before the new Congress can get in and stop it.

A certain percentage of voting machines nationwide should be audited regardless of closeness of a race. We must keep the vote counters honest, even if they are machines. Remember what Joseph Stalin said.

And that Supervisor of Elections needs to be addressed about her incompetency and that of her office.

If you have received numerous compliants during early voting about the machines responding improperly and on Election Day, again the same compliants then proper procedure would dictate that the problematic machines be closed down for investigation and technical checking.

But that is not what Ms. Dent did. She instead let the malfunction machines continue to be used by unsuspecting voters. At the very least her action was negligent.

Christine Jennings deserves a new election.
