I'm back in DC, and as I was walking into work this morning, it occured to me that I don't think the Capitol has ever looked as beautiful as it did today...
A Democratic House.
A Democratic Senate.
It's a wonderful thing.

Living here within the NEO-CONfederate states of America, believe me, the grass looks much greener on the other side.
Thanks, Tracy. We've enjoyed your posts all these months, but the last few have been superb! What a wonderful world...
A clear vindication of the 50-state strategy. Now I’m waiting for the column (Broder? Friedman? Anyone?) headlined “Howard Dean was right” about the 50-state strategy. Without Dean’s 50-state strategy in play, New Hampshire might still be a red state, and Wyoming (Wyoming!) would never be in play, and an large number of state legislative seats and governorships might still be GOP. The big payoff will be in 2008. I’d say Dean was a big winner, but it would be nice to find someone smarter than me who knows how to run the numbers to prove it.
This is too good to pass up.
New Hampshire is celebrating the election of TWO new Representatives to Congress as Democrats. While the DCCC was supportive of Paul Hodes in his effort to take the seat occupied by Charles Bass, on the national level the Democrats virtually ignored Carol Shea-Porter whose grass-roots campaign in the First District has made history.
Although the DCCC made an early effort to help us select the designated hitter in the primary, when that choice was roundly rejected by the voters, they chose to ignore our candidate.
Today's Boston Globe asserts that the DCCC "pulled out" their support. That's not accurate, since you can't pull out something that was never there.
I've heard that when Howard Dean was asked for an example of a net-roots driven success, he mentioned Carol Shea (forgot the Porter) in New Hampshire. That's not accurate either since, while it's true that we managed to generate a little media coverage on the web and email was an important organizing tool, the net didn't generate a significant amount of financial support and the vast majority of 600 enthusiastic volunteers are doing well if they read their email.
There is, however, a wealth of information about the campaign in posts on the DFALink blog, if anyone's interested in how it went. 28 Pages to be exact.
The New York Times, hardly aware of who Carol Shea-Porter is, used a reference to her to open and close a speculative piece about the so-called "New Democrats." So, that script seems to be set, regardless of the fact that there's nothing new about her stance, other than that she got elected without the party's help.
To be fair, after the primary flap, it seemed a better option not even to ask and avoid the strings that even party contributions bring. And we dit it.
Being beholden just to the voters means freedom.
yiiiipppppeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!
i can't get over the fact that evil pombo the writer of horrid environmental legislation got beat by a math phd wind power consultant....i just giggle every time of think of that one. can't wait for rush today....i just love that big guy at times like these...
candide, looks to me like dean, schumer and emanuel all did great jobs....looks like our leadership is stong and the republicans....not so much!
Repost from the last thread:
Greg, never suggest that I'm not happy with the results. There is a lot of things I feel really fantastic about, one of which is the Uniting American Families Act.
Coworker wrote Pelosi a few weeks back and the response was that this will finally make it out of committee.
Candide, nothing from those guys but the Washington Times (of all places) said that win was a vindication of Dean's 50 state strategy. :)
My Necee, who just turned 18 this past July, worked at her home precinct as a poll worker. She had the responsibility of asking for and documenting i.d. that is now required before given a ballot and was in charge of the signature book of voters. I heard through the grapevine that she had a twinkle in her eye (she is full of piss & vinegar) when her dad came in to vote and she wouldn't grant him access to a voter card until he provided the necessary documentation. snicker. She must have paid attention in training.
I asked her about her experience. She said she couldn't believe that "only old people came in to vote."
I'm glad it wasn't the case everywhere.
Youth turnout in election biggest in 20 years
About 24 percent of Americans under the age of 30, or at least 10 million young voters, cast ballots in Tuesday's elections that saw Democrats make big gains in Congress. That was up 4 percentage points from the last mid-term elections in 2002.
Interesting question at the end of this commentary from the Guardian.
Don's departure isn't enough
Rumsfeld's departure this late in the game will inspire his detractors to mix a second (or third or fourth) martini tonight, but sending Robert Gates in as his replacement is almost like putting new frosting on old cake.
Rumsfeld's legacy is indelible: once we lost control of the population in Iraq in April 2003, we could never recover our dominance as liberator. We found Saddam cowering in a hole, but the troubles we let fly after we arrived in Baghdad without a plan of what to do next appears to have fatally flawed our grand intentions.
...The question remains, though: will Gates have a free hand, or will those with a vested interest in protecting their damaged reputations try to save themselves at the expense of those shedding blood?
Gregg, Kristen, et al: I never meant to disparage DCCC and DSCC efforts, which worked superbly, but we could have done without their leaders claiming 50-state strategy hurt the overall effort. Now lets all feel great that BOTH strategies worked. And look for more than the Wash. Times to take note of it.
A little quiz if you feel up to it.
Donald Rumsfeld in his own words
The outgoing US defence secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, is known not only as the longest-serving member of George Bush's cabinet but as also a man whose grasp of the English language is, at best, partial. Test your knowledge of Mr Rumsfeld and his words with our quiz - which of these are real Rumsfeldisms?
New Democrats Pose Challenge
“Every type of Democrat won last night, Northeastern, Midwestern, Southern, Texan, Western, liberal, moderate, conservative and many whose ideology defies easy description and should be best described just as a Democrat,” said Simon Rosenberg, head of the New Democrat Network, an advocacy group.
great, I'm back to having trouble viewing new comments can see them in the preview but the blog isn't refreshing.

you can disparge their efforts all you want, there are many here that felt these guys lost a bit of their luster, especially with the Lieberman race.
THANK YOU DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE IN THE 2006 ELECTION!
In my opinion the Democratic Party won the majority by representing pubic opinion about the current administration and Republican Party representatives who do not represent public opinion. This election the Democratic Party got the majority of these incompetent Republican representatives out of power. Where the Republican Party will no longer use its present position of superiority to debate an unequal balance of power between the two parties instead of debating the issues.
So now its time to get the Republican Party on the ISSUES in the 2008 ELECTION.
Quoting the Washington Post, ‘No pointers to ruling in abortion case” article pub. November 8, 2006
“Kennedy expressed worry that the federal ban might leave some women at "risk if the uterine wall is compromised by cancer or some forms of preeclampsia," a dangerous spike in blood pressure.”
You do the research, but my guess is that there are probably not many partial-birth abortions (late pregnancy abortions) that are done in this country each year. I would think most women are against it.
Would a Democratic Administration consider lifting a ban on partial-birth abortions? I am thinking about the mentally retarded women who might not realize that they are pregnant until later in their term. Is the government going to force a woman in this position to have a baby, go through the emotional attachment and emotional loss of having a child, or send her to prison if she chooses an abortion?
There is now a chance for real change - at home - not sure about Iraq. Too bad about Ned Lamont.
As for Dean - nice job on the 50 State Plan. CNN started to give credit to Dean on a couple shows - Lou Dobbs and Larry King.
Edwards/Dean '08!
Essie,
I was surprised by the number of young voters at the polling places where I was working, as well as the number of 30 somethings.
There were lots of kids in blue jeans and office-types in suits and ties. It's usually just seniors and housewives voting during the day (except at lunch when the working stiffs come in between calls/jobs..as you well know).
I don't know if it was encouragement by the civics classes at our high school or those increasing interest rates on student loans. Maybe they were just ready for change like the rest of it. I also suspect the two propositions on stem cell research and raising the minimum wage might have been key.
Our school district had a bond issue on the ballot and my son said that the principal/administration was calling kids out of class for a voter registration drive...now there's an idea? I suspect the Catholic high school was doing the same for the stem cell initiative.
Whatever the reason, I hope our side is doing some analysis of why these young people actually voted. It's a trend we must foster and grow all over the country.
a gracious good morning, {{{joyful bloggers}}}
enjoying the celebration, yet one eye in the rear view mirrow. did a little research last night, and posted some of the most revealing tidbits on the "October Surprise" --Mr. Gates, the Sec of Defense.
He has roots in the bad old CIA of Reagan, Iran-Contra. But his involvment with the "chessboard" of Jimmy Carter's Kissinger (Ziebegnew sp. Brez...etc.) is so ironic it made me laugh and shiver at the same time when i dug it up. Let's just say he was involved with the decision to prod the Soviet Union into Afghanistan so they could experience their own "Viet nam".
Suffice it to say, this is one of the deeply rooted evil ones, imho. PoppyBush's CIA guy, a masterful coverup artiste for Raygun's henchmen during the Iran/Contra evildoing.
So, i'm livin' it up today--on vacation. Maybe bbl.
Enjoy the victory!
This is a quote from my Senator Durbin, whom I love and admire and APPRECIATE!
"Simply having the title of majority is not enough, though. We have a responsibility to the people who elected us--the American people who have entrusted us to have this awesome opportunity to produce results."
[Show your representatives some love, if they've earned it. They do appreciate hearing nice things, more than you might think.]

i personally feel that issues like abortion and other moral issues is what KKKarl Rove and the evangelicals used to put the chimp King George on the throne to have the power to rule these 6 years
i think we the people need to take more responsibility we need to be activists
i think women who are able to need to help each other and inform each other about taking BCP, or birth control patches or shots and one benefit of hormone therapy is no period
the people who sign abstinence agreements are simply unrealistic it has been proven to be ineffective
but as far as congress is concerned, i personally don't want a bunch of men deciding what goes on in my or my daughter's reproductive matters
okay, i can't resist this...let's just be in the here and now for a little bit, 'kay?
let's savor the moment and continue to keep ourselves informed. there is that lovely two years between election cycles and i'd like to leave the presidential politics aside for a little while.
i'm not trying to be snippy. just sayin' there's a lot more to our job as citizen than elections. let's participate in a zen kinda way, just for a little while....
(are they talking about this on t.v.?)

Jacqueline,
I voted last week by absentee ballot, but my wife waited until Tuesday. She said there were more young people voting than she has ever seen. Of course, many of our Virginia precincts have never had this number of voters in a mid-term election.
Thank goodness, James Webb has won and is pursuing a course to victory! Allen may request a recount, but he probably will not. Either way, the vote will be certified soon and we have a Democratic senator!
:)
Whatever the reason, I hope our side is doing some analysis of why these young people actually voted. It's a trend we must foster and grow all over the country.

ALL of the republican election judges were VERY attractive college women...19-24, with one exception. We had a remarkable youth turnout, way above the national norm. They were Democrats. We had very few republican voters, but with those gorgeous young things having fun at the Young Republican Club parties, that will not be true in the future.
My son is an organizer and they've got a large group. They're committed for life. They have a lot of fun, too. I think that's the key. This is our duty, but it should be a celebration--of liberty, of life--of the pursuit of happines...
I'll be enrolling in another class at the community college, just to organize the young people. We'll be building another drinking liberally group, patronizing a local pup where the owners are very blue and very active, and everybody wins.
I think it beats watching t.v., but that's just me.
Congratulations, again, on the Clair victory! We need to work on a "regional" party machine...after we rest.
Hope is good.
Fade,
Good thoughts, as always. I am almost back to normal after an absolutely incredible three days and nights. Now, it's time to work on 2008!
I do wish John Kerry had been more careful; however, we have several other good candidates. How about John Edwards? Barack Obama?
Hey blog member! What do you mean you are not sure about a change in Iraq along with a change in the House and Senate?
At least the terrorists can no longer exploit the United States mistake along with the fact that the U.S. Citizens are against this war but can not say nothing about it. At least the citizens have good representation in the war now instead of having a President who pretends we were all behind his agenda.
The Republican Party itself inferrs that it has got the U.S. in a compromising position by saying that the U.S. now has to solve the social and political issues for Iraq and the Middle East in order to win this war.
Now Republican officials have the nerve to sarcastically ask the Democratic Party if they have a plan to solve all the problems for the Middle East in Iraq? As Republican officials try to publicly intimidate the Democratic Party for not coming up with quick and easy answers?
Is this how it usually goes when Republican administration's get the country in an international jam? They expect the Democratic Party to figure out a plan to get the country out of the jam?
Thank you, America

The Guardian
For six years, latterly with the backing of both houses of a markedly conservative Republican Congress, George Bush has led an American administration that has played an unprecedentedly negative and polarising role in the world's affairs. On Tuesday, in the midterm US congressional elections, American voters rebuffed Mr Bush in spectacular style and with both instant and lasting political consequences. By large numbers and across almost every state of the union, the voters defeated Republican candidates and put the opposition Democrats back in charge of the House of Representatives for the first time in a dozen years.
You're welcome!
I just want our congressional team to keep their promises. If we do that then 2008 will be an even bigger landslide for us. If not, we are in big trouble. We have to make sure we Democrats (Conyers in particular) don't launch a mud and dirt campaign to try and get impeachments! If we just do what we promised, the American people will make sure we stay in power and bring peace and prosperity to the nation as a whole.
Will we still see arrogant sighning statements when legislation is signed?
Did Bush say anything this morning in the Rose Garden? If so - what were his comments (like I really care)....
Kathy, he basically is trying to push the Republicans to ram through any pending legislation before Jan.
Posted by salutetheDems on November 9, 2006 at 11:49 AM
I personally think he is going to go veto stamp crazy.
ok, so Hassert isn't going to push for minority leader...we all know the results/report from the Page Investigation was held in an effort to curb the hemmoraging from the GOP and Hassert managed to keep his seat as a result.
Who thinks Hassert will resign when the truth comes out that he basically pimped the pages out to Foley for big campaign contributions?
And if that does happen, do they appoint a replacement or hold a special election?

WASHINGTON - Sen. George Allen will concede the Virginia race to Democrat Jim Webb when he addresses supporters at 3 p.m. ET Thursday, a source within the Allen camp told the National Journal.
The Journal, a MSNBC.com content partner, said the source was someone close to the Republican incumbent.
Has anyone looked at the picture on the frontpage of CNN (Bush and Pelosi), the look on her face is priceless, it looks like she is thinking 'you creep, turn around and pay attention to the flag'
Kristen on November 9, 2006 at 11:53 AM:
I guess he's been saving 'em up so he has plenty now that he has to deal with a Democratic Congress.
GOOD MORNING / AFTERNOON, ALL!
As Tip O'Neill once said, "All politics is local".
With the Dems taking the House, Little Luis (IL 4) and Jesse Jr., (Ubiquitous), have both announced that they are closing down their exploratory committees for a possible Chicago Mayoral run.
They said that they are in line for sub-committee Chairmanships, and so it goes.
Clearing the path
Sandy, the local talking heads are speculating on a March "fast exit" for Hastert. There will be a primary in April, so they may already have a pool going.
In this audio (Election 2008) Tavis Smiley wonders whether the Democratic Party will forget what the black turnout did for them in 2004. He also wonders when he will hear from Howard Dean regarding the covenant with black America. I hope that the Dems respond soon. The repubs are already trying to make inroads by running black candidates in high profile races (Swann, Steele). Let's not let it slip away.
It might also be interesting to listen to some of his other posts. On election day Bill Clinton was in on the conversation.
I think the Dems ignore this man and the Covenant with Black America, at their peril. He reaches a large radio audience through the Tom Joyner morning show and I don't think he's invested in remaining in the Dem family if he's treated like a stepchild. I suspect there are many who would follow him out.
I don't want to steal the joy of this victory but you have to look toward the next campaign.
I noticed yesterday at the president press conference that bushco when he referenced the Democratic party wins he said the Democrat party twice in a row, the emphasis used is on the rat ending.
Well I from now on will call the Republican party the Republicant party in my conversation.
They can't govern they hate government.
They can't lead average Americans because they are above us average Americans.
They can't us diplomacy as that is beneath them.
They can't manage the economy because they have no concept of a budget.
this list is endless on their can'ts!
An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young men, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do, and he didn't seem too concerned about it.
One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy's room and placed on his study table three objects:
a Bible,
* a silver dollar, and
* a bottle of whiskey.
"I'll just hide behind the door," the old preacher said to himself, "and when he comes home from school this afternoon, I'll see which object he picks up. If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that would be! If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a businessman, and that would be okay, too . But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good drunkard, and, Lord, what a shame that would be."
The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's footsteps as he entered the house whistling and headed for his room. He tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the objects on the table. With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.
Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the silver dollar and dropped it into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle and took a big drink.
"Lord have mercy," the old man whispered, "he's gonna be a Congressman!"
Several news media are reporting that George Allen's speech may be more problematic than we thought
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack of Iowa took the initial step in his long-shot bid for the White House Thursday, establishing a presidential campaign committee and seeking an early jump on 2008.
"Americans sent a clear message on Tuesday. They want leaders who will take this country in a new direction," Vilsack, Iowa's two-term governor, said in a statement. "They want leaders who share their values, understand their needs, and respect their intelligence. That's what I've done as governor of Iowa, and that's what I intend to do as president."

I see the Kristians have started their "You better wish me a 'Merry Christmas' or find yourself out of business" crusade. It's so nice to see they've found the true spirit....
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wal-Mart has told its employees that it's OK to once again greet shoppers by saying "Merry Christmas" this holiday season instead of the generic "Happy Holidays."
CNN confirmed that Wal-Mart will announce Thursday that it plans to use the phrase "Merry Christmas" in products and around its stores this holiday season.

Madfuq,
Like you, I feel very conflicted now. It really is impossible for me to describe how I feel about George W. Bush and those who enabled his criminal reign.
However, honestly, I am trying very hard to keep myself as positive as I am able to. When I see a news anchor try to pacify a sock puppit for the Republicans and get the nominal Democrat to play nice on screen, I get so upset and revolted I have to take 5.
I know that if I keep to my mantra of "Never forget/Never forgive," I will feel totally justified; however, I also know that if we can't find any common ground, we will never be able to go forward to the kind of America I used to know and love.
:)
What's wrong with Merry Christmas? I hope everybody has one!
Posted by Tony_In_Indy on November 9, 2006 at 12:35 PM
May I ask, Are you serious?
Posted by Tony_In_Indy on November 9, 2006 at 12:35 PM
Absolutely nothing, if the spirit moves you to extend that greeting. However, for these false Christians or Kristians to DEMAND that someone say it to them is the antithesis of the Christmas spirit.
We have had this Holiday discussion (in fact it was just last year about this time).
Here is my take on why this is an issue. Republican NeoCons wish people a "merry Christmas" because they are very egocentric and it's really about their holiday.
Democrats, realize that the holiday season is more than just about Christmas and realize that by wishing someone a Happy Holiday you are taking into consideration the other person and genuinely want them to have a nice season.
Umm, I think we Democrats fight for free speech - right? Then if someone says Merry Christmas to you, you do not have to respond in kind. You can say Happy Holidays in response, or nothing at all!
I just don't believe that people are out to purposely ruin you holidays by saying Merry Christmas! Its time for both parties to grow up.
Posted by Tony_In_Indy on November 9, 2006 at 12:53 PM
You missed the point. If you want to say "Merry Christmas", shout it til your hoarse, I couldn't care less. But, when you force your beliefs and culture on someone else, with the threat that they will lose their livelihood, you are no longer greeting someone, you are threatening them.
This same ideology has us where we are now in Iraq.

Everything looks a lot prettier these couple of days. We've been depressed for too long it is nice to go to bed under the light of the blue moon and wake up in a morning with feeling of being..a winner!I am in the redest state of all where pretty much republicans swept everything, but it matters not-we won everywhere else. Ole confederate states seems are going more toward sophistication of Afghanistan than toward 21st century. We will not win any of southern states in presidential elction in 08 (even if Lord Jesus itself is candidate but have D) beside his name)but we will win Ohio,CO,NM,Mo,and perhaps FL and with that presidency of U.S.A.
I am not saying that we should give up on 40 % of democratic population that vote with us. Once we have universal healthcare, minimum wage increse, afordable drug plan etc. we ought to exclude south out of that and they can ask Bush and GOP to provide that for them, because seems to me having 10 commandments in courthouse,or whether gays should marry or not, whether someone ought have abortion or not...sems all those are more important to them than overall well being and quality of life that Dems want to have for them.
As for our people in both houses advice for long tenure;
1.Serve and Protect the people, the weak who can not protect themselves.
2.Be honest and always speak the truth
3.Be brave to stand firm for what you believe even if your opponents will mock you and curse you.
4.Do no wrong and believe that God is on side of the people, on side of the truth and have no fear to sacrifice self interests for interest of the people.
5.Live honestly with yourself and others and if you are confused always remind yourself what life looked like before nov 7th.
Serve the people and people will serve you!
April 29th 2005
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid raised a few eyebrows yesterday on the senate floor when he said it would take a "miracle" for the Democrats to win enough races next year to take back the Senate.
ok Tony just remember that when someone wishes you a Happy Hanukka.
The Neocons claimed there was a war on their Christmas, and between Walmart and Fox News folks bought that people were out to steal Christmas trees and stockings.
I personally think it is far more thoughtful to personalize your message to the person and if you aren't sure the Happy Holiday is equally as nice.
ahhhh, the holiday thing, again...
one of the most important pieces to this puzzle is the school, the right-wing-radio-preachers and the war on Christmas/Christians...
if i may share my little tale of how this thing evolved. ahem, it is, once again, safe to use that word again. YES!
public schools are very diverse. i had classrooms that were equally black and white, and some that had one white kid
Christians, Muslims, Latter Day Saints, Jehovah's Witnesses, Jews...and the holidays were times when we celebrated together.
i negotiated peace agreements with a young man who lost an uncle to the conflict between Palestinians and Jews...and his Latino Catholic classmate after 911 tensions were high. Our classroom was near the airport and when a plane flew overhead, my big high school boys would rush to the window, terrified. i loved them, reassured them and we got back to work. i loved them ALL equally.
the sensitivity to multi-cultural celebrations was manipulated by the right-wing-preachers who recognized an opportunity to further exploit the fears and prejudices of their flocks. they found public voices, like o'lielly and oxi-rush, to spread the disinformation.
it would be nice if we could find a spokesperson to show that the "celebrate diversity" wing of the reality based community has the only approach that leads to peace...imagine

Well said my friend. I've been lurking as usual but felt compelled to comment after seeing an old friend.
The day after November 7th, 2004 when the air had been sucked out of this party and most of us here honestly thought we had been abducted by aliens, a few of us predicted that there was a real chance that the pendulum will now swing the other way.
It was also the day that the work began to make November 7th, 2006 a target date for not only a resurrection of this party, but a subtle and not so subtle education of a public, blinded by a government and administration based on sand complete with smoke and mirrors.
It was here that a lot of us got the fuel and the fodder to engage and often embarrass most of our primate, knuckledragging counterparts on the right. To be sure, we have had a lot of fun with a number of trolls, who after a few riffs and "agenda right" talking points, disappear.
What we picked up from here, we took home and shared with various right leaning family members, who like it or not, watched as our predictions and opinions played out in front of them on cable news.
Yep, I'm with Fade. I'm gonna enjoy how Blue Michigan is. I'm gonna enjoy how it feels when friends and family who were "stay the course" remark or make comment about how they have taken part in a "change the course" strategy. Who now say, "Man, I can't believe that I supported this Cheesebrain for President"
So Dem's, wear that tinfoil, moonbat hat with pride.
We did it and there is no need to worry about 2008.
Like president monkeyboy said, "Fool me once...and you'll fool me twice"
The American people won't get fooled again.
btw, the multicultural classroom is one of those foundational topics that any teacher is very familiar with--and that would include the mighty Dr. Dobson.
If someone wishes me a Merry Christmas I say thank you and the same to you. If someone wishes me Happy Holidays I say thank you and the same to you. If someone wishes me Happy Hannukah I say thank you and the same to you. If someone wishes me a Merry Yule or a Happy Saturnalia or a Joyous Bruma, I say thank you and the same to you.
Dave, what a pleasure to see you in real time. i'm off the rest of the week. my proactive nature decided that it might take a few days for me to sober up, if things turned badly...
So Dem's, wear that tinfoil, moonbat hat with pride.
beautiful advice, Dave. your eloquence and wit have always been a delight to read after work. thank you for your valuable contributions over the years to this community.
warmest regards to you and your wife. this so feels like a holiday!
hey Dave-
Happy Election Bliss!
i've got to get back to my chores. bbl

It may be easier than you think. Most of the Pug's that got regular airplay on the MSM will now be marginalized. A minority party normally is. The MSM will soon forget who John McCain and Frist are, unless they are caught with their pants down.
And with these guys, there is a better chance of that happening, than them having something relevant to say with anything concerning legislation. Fox may chase a few of them around but the rest of the networks and cable MSM's are gonna fill up time slots with the majority.
Karma dude. Most of these sleaze bags are headed for the desolation of the minority party. It's cold and lonely and it quite frankly, deserved.
holy shit has the war on the war on christmas started already! i was just loading up the turkey giblet firing catapult to try to do my part in the war on the war on thanksgiving...and there are all these rotting pumpkins lying about from the siege of halloween...

Thanks Fade. You've always been so kind and yep, it's is kool to see you in real time. That hasn't happened in a long time.
It is like a holiday. It's just like your local team winning a NBA championship (we did) or a World Series(We tried), but better, because you don't have to be a sports nut, to enjoy this.
Good seein' you and best to you and your's.

Not just "one of" - by far the biggest thing of all.
Michigan Dave - I haven't seen you for awhile. The day after the elections of 02' - the whole blog was pretty sad. And then those awful trolls came in and rubbed our faces in it. It was pretty bad.
But now - it's different! We are in charge! And I sure hope the first order of business, when we take over is that the good men and women will re-place the neo-cons on the FCC Commission and bring back the "Fairness Doctrine". We need to start hearing BOTH sides to issues on the radio talk shows - not just the right side. I'm sick and tired of Hanniety and Limbaugh telling me that I'm not American enough or that I'm a witch because I believe and support women's rights.

hey everyone...yee haa!!! what a victory!
here's something i just sent off as a comment to the dnc. if you agree that the idea has merit, perhaps you could talk it up.
dear sirs,
i would first like to congratulate dr. dean and everyone involved in the 50 state strategy. their fantastically successful efforts have given our country a new hope for the future. i can honestly agree with others that, and don't ask me why, now the world does indeed look brighter and more vibrant. we have all been 'refreshed'.
i would like also to once again present an idea which i truely believe would go a very long way toward assuring the democratic party's continued success in '08. i first sent this to you about 8 or 9 months ago and again about 3 or 4 months ago. in as much as we were heading toward the november elections, i did not release this idea publically. now, however, the elections are behind us and my intention is to make this idea public with the hope that it might gain momentum and support within the democratic community.
my proposal is that we make the '08 democratic convention as accessible and open to online internet participation as technologically possible. i can imagine large screens positioned around the facility where textual comments, personal videos, results of online polls, and perhaps even online votes on issues and candidates would be displayed for all to see. of course, all this would be filtered thru several layers of security but would retain a high degree of spontaneity and diversity.
providing public participation in the democratic process to such an extent would be impossible for the republicans who's every utterance and image at their conventions is totally and completely scripted. it would prove beyond doubt that the democratic party is all inclusive and open to everyone.
thank you...and keep on keepin' on!
cheers!

"Never forget/Never forgive,"...
Posted by Paul on November 9, 2006 at 12:29 PM
Paul,
My 'mantra', as you will, is "Never forget to forgive." I have explained to people on this blog before my reasoning for this, but I'll give it another go for you, briefly. By never forgetting we learn by our past mistakes and therefore grow intellectually. By forgiving we get a sense of good will and, henceforth, grow spiritually.
Therefore, never forgetting to forgive becomes a win-win scenario, which allows for our individual growth.
Just my POV, thank you much!!
Kristen,
I enjoyed the link to the "Caption the photo" of Bush at his news conference yesterday. My caption was: "Frankly, I'm just not that concerned about 'em. It really doesn't matter to me where they are. You know?"
Somehow this seemed fitting for the moment.
All,
After job seeking, reading, and posting I out for the day. Hope all enjoy the day. bye for now

Just workin....and when I did get the chance to jump on, I would check the flow, lurk a bit and if I felt I didn't have anything to offer, I'd hold back. Spent the first year after 2004 ranting. To tell you the truth, I lost my sense of humor and was posting angry stuff instead of being patient and counting to ten.
However, did miss everyone and will always continue to participate. Don't need to go over to little green balls (foot),Glenn Becks blog,Michele Malkin's or battle with the pug's on think progress. hmm....that kinda got in the way of quality time here.

I think that's pretty much what voters said Tuesday. They ignored the culture warriors in large numbers.
Good afternoon fellow Democrats. Sen. George "Maccaca" Allen (R-VA) is scheduled to give his concession speech at 1500EST today from northern VA. The senate is complete. We are victorious. Now on to the 60-seat, fillibuster proof, super majority!
Mich Dave - well it's nice to see the ol' bloggers show up once in awhile.
I'm getting my steam back just a little today - was way down yesterday as almost all of our local candidates went down in flames on Tuesday. Two co-workers told me that they voted a straight Republican ticket because they would never vote for "baby killers" - [rolling eyes] - it sucks to live in a very red county!
Hang in there rashlimbo. I'm still a southerner at heart, but politics do look awfully sweet out here in snowy Colorado.
I went off on an evangelical yesterday. I told him that he and his fellow evangelicals were selfish to promote their "morality" agenda by taking away individual rights away from American homosexuals and pregnant women.
Where did that come from? Must've showed my fangs........
boy it has been a long time coming hasn't it?
Posted by gregg on November 9, 2006 at 02:12 PM
Longest damnest 6 years I ever wasted!
Morality is not a tangible thing. The earth is a tangible thing, as is a woman and a homosexual. An actual law is more definible and tangible than is a moral.

SandyH: I saw much of the same thing here in Chicago just north of the Loop making it within city limits. A lot of college kids and a large number of the gay and lesbian population were out in droves. It was good to see. I've always been a strong proponent of let our youth learn and register to vote as early as possible. Many years ago when I resided in New Hampshire, I worked with a group that was pushing to include the youth vote by letting them register when they got their driver's license and extend the vote registeration option to college students when they registered as freshman. I remember when I first registered to vote. It made me very proud.

I'm don't get that either about Indiana. I was surprised at how the state stood out as a beacon of red in the midwest.
Funny. Reminded me of the first time a I met someone from Indiana in high school. Kid moved in to town with his family and he had this strong accent and talked and walked like a cowboy. It was also the first time that I heard that Indianians ( good luck with that one) were out to prove that they were more cowboys than texans.
Go figure.
Must be one of those places where time stands still or isolation is the preferred option.
And then there's Bobby Knight and the birthplace of clinical anger management. At the time, people took him serious and loved his strangle hold and chair throwing coaching style. Winning by intimidation.
Kind of like delivering peace on the tip of a cruise missle.
I'm sorry Kath. But, keep the faith. There is every chance that one of your republican congressional reps or a senator will find himself in a compromising position with the same sex and have photos on myspace.
...it happens:):)

I don't think most Democrats are so insensitive as to say "Merry Christmas" to someone who is known to be faithful to a different religion.
I enjoy saying "Merry Christmas" to friends and others whom I know to be Christians.
I also enjoy saying, "Happy Holidays" to people who may not be Christian.

I do hope this "make nice" period does not get us into approving a fundamentalist super religious Supreme Court appointee.
I bet the capital looks good! Bright and sunny. We need to bring a lot more sunshine in the days to come.
Donated $20.06 for Dean's success in pull off the 50 state strategy. It seems he has been busy behind the scenes getting our country back. Thank you!
Now we need to get and keep discrimination our of our constitutions. It is a sad day that so many voted for criminalizing some of our citizen instead of giving them the same rights to legal benefits of marriage.
Let's stop wasting money on bombs and bullets and put that money into health care and education.

DEOMCRATS, THIS IS A WARNING: ACT NOW OR THE FREEDOM OF US ALL DIES BECAUSE A FEW DEMOCRAT WHORES SOLD IT TO GW BUSH!
I MAY NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY THIS, BEING A REPUBLICAN WHO LOVES YOU ALL AND CELEBRATES YOUR VICTORY ON BEHALF OF ALL AMERICANS....But I came half way around the world, dragged by my parents who were convinced that this is the Paradise of human freedom, THAT IT IS FINALLY THE safe place!
BUT IT IS NO PARADISE WITH NO FREEDOM *IF* YOUR WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS IS IN GW BUSH'S HANDS....So please, crusaders, savers of America from morons who use Jesus as a cover for their Luciferian souls, PULL BACK THE BUSH FASCISM BILL that EVEN SOME STUPID AMORAL DEMOCRATS supported!
If you don't do that, then Darth Veder Cheney OWNS America even though he is-- now that Rumsfeld is gone-- a body without a head. He is still the ventriliquist for dumb dummy Bush....And they are still tools of the once commie-now fascist neocons and the Christian Fundamentalist Right perverts.
No hyperbole is adequate to describe the necrophilic screwing of the Founding Fathers of this SHINNING CITY ON A HILL by perverts like the current usurpers of my Republican Party and the nation of us all are practicing. We must bring the saintly souls of America's Founding Fathers, now so aggitated and panicked, back to rest by REVERSING THE BUSH TORTURE AND HABEAS CORPUS CAPRICE BILL Congress voted for him before the election.
I come from a world of totalitarianism. It once was a civilized world. But then, even as a child, I could see how the fascists take it over one nibble at a time, slowly, bit by bit. LEARN FROM HISTORY AND ACT TO REVERSE ITS DUMBEST AND MOST DANGEROUS PARTS!
DEOCRATS, YOUR VICTORY IS FECES UNLESS YOU *FIRST AND FOREMOST* REVERSE THE BUSHIT BILL!
FREEDOM IS ALL WE HAVE TO LEAVE OUR CHILDREN...TO VOTE WITH BUSH ON ABROGATION OF FREEDOM SHOULD BE PUNISHED WITH CASTRATION SO THAT SUCH POLITICIANS CAN NEVER AGAIN REPRODUCE THEIR IRRESPONSIBLE CHEAP WHORY SELVES.
BE REAL DEMOCRATS...NEVER FORGIVE, NEVER FORGET THE FELLOW DEMS WHO VIOLATED THE VERY BASIS OF DEMOCRATS: *D*E*M*O*C*R*A*C*Y* WHEN THEY VOTED TO INFLICT A BUSHIT RESIDUE ON OUR CONSTITUTION!
If you don't resind that bill NOW, then binLaden has won and OUR heroic children in combat have lost!
Don't be lazy Democrats...don't be whory Democrats....BE REAL DEMOCRATS and reverse that God forsaken bill!!!!!
I escaped the World Trade Center Catastrophe on 9/11....But this Bush Bill convinces me that I STILL HAVE NOT escaped joining the victims of that event-- neither have you until you KILL THE BUSHIT BILL.
I am being crude because of your silence....Now I'll be quiet and the next sound you hear is the groan of your American birth-right-- FREEDOM-- getting its throat cut by the mindless moron fascists around GW Bush!
ACT NOW AND I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER!
NANCY POLOCI....what was the point of standing firm and courageous when the father of GW Bush would not condemn the Tienanmien Square massacre while you sit mute on the BUSHIT BILL that puts every American's Writ of Habeas Corpus in the slimmy hands of GW Bush?
Act now, please, Nancy...show leadership, show resolve and be the Congress leader I came to love and admire back in 1989 when you spokje so eloquently for freedom....NOW SPEAK FOR *OUR* FREEDOM and kill the Busdhit Bill, please!
will the repuglinants ever change? doesn't appear so since they still don't want to give dems credit for anything. seems they're blaming the election on themselves!

Hi, I am new to this format. I worked very hard in our local Dems Headquarters and it paid off. I like everyone else is happy to see the victory but now those elected have to use it and prove they can accomplish what they promised. They also cannot fall into the same disarray the republicans did for scandal after scandal
Posted by Kathy_in_Indiana on November 9, 2006 at 02:08 PM
Kathy,
I totally understand how you feel. While Idaho dems picked up six local legislative seats, we lost the big battles for governor, US Congress and Lieutenant Gov. The national win for me was somewhat bittersweet because Idaho could not be part of it. But, I stay focused knowing that almost half of Idaho couldn't be cowed into voting for the slimy republicans they put up. There is some victory in that.

they may talk-the-talk of bipartisan cooperation but i doubt they'll walk-the-walk.
I have just sent this to our two talk radio stations and will post it on our Democratic Party web site for the county:
Republican Virginia Senator George Allen this afternoon has conceded his seat in the chamber to challenger Jim Webb, giving Democrats a 51-49 majority in the body. Democrats, who gained a sizeable majority in the House of Representatives, now control both chambers of Congress.
Now will you put equal time on your talk radio for us on the left? Or will you have to wait until the Democrats reinstate the Fairness Doctrine and make you give us equal time?
With that - I'm out of here. I'm starting to gain my strength back from our defeat of our local candidates..... we will be silent no more!
Keep on rockn'

I'm from MN but I was disappointed that Kleeb lost in Nebraska's 3rd district. I think things will be better for Idaho, Nebraska and even Wyoming next time around.

Very good thought, Kathy.
Now we need another letter-writing campaign like the ones we used to conduct . . .
Who can get the contact info for the station ownerships?
Posted by BoilerMan on November 9, 2006 at 03:27 PM they may talk-the-talk of bipartisan cooperation but i doubt they'll walk-the-walk.
I don't know how they'll play it. They surrendered the center in this election.
But the fact that we declared peace first by offering a non-partisan approach to governing puts us in a stronger position if they continue to insist that we
* dismantle the government
* privatize social security and medicare
* turn the public school system into private run charter schools
* and make Iraq a 51st state.
If they do, we can go to plan B.

I can only hope. IMO, Idaho would be blue today had the candidates received national support. We needed just over 12,000 votes to now have a dem congressman from Idaho. Instead, our state sent a posterboy for idiocy, arrogance and corruption. He will, no doubt, be the laughing stock of Washington.
FCC database....you may also google your town, and the local stations are required to post their information. Radiofinder usually works.
Let's not forget the list of corporations that blacklisted Air America Radio. If i have to do it myself, there will be a website up to handle that situation soon.

I am sort of stunned that Sali won. That might be a blessing in disguise for Idaho Democrats at the expense of the state's reputation unfortunately.
I am thrilled that we won yesterday. I know there is a lot of work to do but I hope we, as Democrats, use our new clout to repeal some of the Draconian legislation passed in the 'war on terror'.
We are Americans. We should be opposed to such laws. Are we not the land of the free and the home of the brave?
I, for one, do not feel such fear that I am willing to shred the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, and the Bill of Rights for anyone.
Sure we face dangers, but we have faced dangers before. Freedom prevails BECAUSE it is free, not in spite of it. Our nation of laws can fight terrorists without suspending all those things we hold dear.
I want our soul and dignity back. Madame Speaker, can you do that?

;-)
Oil prices went up today, more than $1 a barrell, and the stock market fell on the news. Gee, one day after the election, WHAT A COINCIDENCE. Maybe Bush and his pals can call their OPEC friends to extend lower oil prices at least until the Demos come into power in January. How can they blaim Demos for higher oil prices then? Oh, yeah, they'll find a way (like Pelosi did it?).
Who would have believed that oil prices just might have been manipulated. Do I remember something about the Bush family being tight with the Saudi's?

And while we are at it, let's replace the current unfairness doctrine with the original fairness doctrine
http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/F/htmlF/fairnessdoct/fairnessdoct.htm
"...However, before the Commission's action, in the spring of 1987, both houses of Congress voted to put the fairness doctrine into law--a statutory fairness doctrine which the FCC would have to enforce, like it or not. But President Reagan, in keeping with his deregulatory efforts and his long-standing favor of keeping government out of the affairs of business, vetoed the legislation. There were insufficient votes to override the veto. Congressional efforts to make the doctrine into law surfaced again during the Bush administration. As before, the legislation was vetoed, this time by Bush. "

And thus, hate radio was spawned...

Evening all,
First of all, congratulations to those who put in so much hard work during this election ordeal.
I heard on NPR radio that the idiot bush chose for secretary of defense is a cronie who was right in the middle of the Iran Contra scandle that bypassed Congress. bush will try to shove gates through with the lame-duck, do-nothing but f**k America congress. We must stand up and filibuster this ahole.
Another ahole was heard from today. bush wants the lame-duck, do-nothing but f**k America congress to make bolton an official ambassador to the UN. We can't let bush get away with this crap.
Democrats: Congratulations and appreciation for all of your hard work and prayers. For too many years, America has been ruled by those with the gold. Now it is time for those with the Golden Rule to rule...for I was naked and you clothed me, hungry and you fed me.
We had a good night here in NY. I'm glad we won the Attorney General's race with Andrew Cuomo now in charge and we won 3 out of 9 house seats,i thought we were gonna win 7 but oh well.
Congratulations to John Hall,Kirsten Gillibrand and Michael Arcuri.
So overall a good night here in NY.
dors,
Although the decision to replace Mr. Rumsfeld with Mr. Gates has been seen as a defeat for Vice President Cheney, Mr. Gates's book carries a blurb from Mr. Cheney that calls the text "the definitive account of the end of the Cold War," and says of Mr. Gates, "No one has a broader understanding of these historic events."
{i read his book about 6-7 years ago. it's pretty good}
ANGELIDES' BIG MISTAKE
Well it was truly a great day for Democracy in California and across our nation. We've made incredible gains and started a new positive momentum. Too bad Phil Angelides didn't accept a brave offer by Controller Steve Westly to keep the Gubernatorial Primary clean and respectable. Though Angelides' decision to ignore Westly's positive campaign offer may or may not have had a decisive impact on his chances, Californians are certainly tired of wasted time and money being pumped into useless negative campaigning. Westly's positive offer was truly refreshing. One thing is for sure though, no one could have done more to support Phil Angelides and our Party's candidates than Steve Westly. After barely losing an extremely disappointing primary, Westly certainly stood tall in support of our shared Democratic values. It was great to see how he came FULL-TIME to Phil's side even as so many other Democrats simply disappeared. I want to thank Mr. Westly for helping to put forth a truly valiant effort to defeat our Bush-promoting, middle class bashing, immigrant disparaging Governor.
Steve Westly's actions (and not just words) will certainly be remembered should he ever again decide to go forward with public service aspirations. True Democrats always reward candidates who PROVE themselves loyal and unselfish, especially when it comes to relentlessly championing our mutual Democratic values.

America needs a new direction. The Democratic Party is working to achieve that goal. That is one reason I voted a straight Democratic ticket. A female House Speaker is something that America is getting for the first time ever.
I want Bredesen to become president.
Bredesen (governor of Tennessee) is a very smart man. If you look at Bredesen's web site you be amazed of how organize he is.
Bredesen should do very well against any republican candidate for president.
1) People pay much more attention to governors than senators. There is one governor per state and two senators per state. The governor has much more control of the state than senators. People pay more attention the person in power. That's one of the reasons why bush beat Gore in the 2000 presidential election. In fact, Gore's own state (Tennessee) voted for bush.
2) On Tuesday of November 7 0f 2006, millions of people reelected Bredesen for governor. Bredesen had 69 percent of the votes. That means a lot of people love him. If a lot of people love him than there is more of a chance that he will have more campaigners for the 2008 election.
