Governor Dean and the DNC Support DC Voting Rights

Governor Dean:
"For far too long, residents of the District of Columbia have been denied full voting rights in Congress. The Democratic National Committee is on record supporting full voting rights for District residents, believing that change is long overdue. Residents of our nation's capital share responsibilities in their government, pay federal taxes, and serve honorably in our nation's military and should have an equal voice in America's strong democratic process. Republicans should withdraw their opposition."

I agree. I know why they never had a vote, but it still doesn't make sense to me.I think it's high time to make this change. It's stupid to have a Representive who cannot vote.

DC should have a Vote that counts.

This should have happened ages ago!I too, am for 1 vote =1 person.The electoral college needs to be on the Democratic agenda to get rid of.I feel that the electoral college is a further deterent as far as a persons meaning anything.

We DC citizens got completely screwed again by the current House leadership neglecting to bring to the floor the DC/Utah solution.
They pretend that constitutional issues are important but last time I read the Constitution, is not that the job of the Federal courts to answer?

We DC citizens got completely screwed again by the current House leadership neglecting to bring to the floor the DC/Utah solution.
They pretend that constitutional issues are important but last time I read the Constitution, is not that the job of the Federal courts to answer?

If the republicans appeal to thier roots (that is that everyone should be free to have a vote) then why the opposition? DC is a fundimental part of our nation let them have a voice.

I was born and raised in DC. For way too long we have been treated as "second class citizens, no voting right, but in a full "tax pay status". Taxation without full/equal representation. Right is right, just is just. We are not treated with fairness. Why should we, pay taxes, or even be required to participate in jury duty? We only want, what's right. If we are to set an example to the rest of the world, we need to set a better one here at home. We need to clean up our own backyard before we start to clean up someone else’s.

There is neither Constitutional nor legislative authority to grant Congressional voting rights to D.C. Only States having first been admitted to the Union are entitled to elected representation in Congress or electoral votes in Presidential elections. D. C already has representatives who sit in Congress but cannot vote on legislation. Their authority is limited to expressing their opinions on the floor and lobbying those who can vote. Since D.C was established for the sole purpose of locating the Capitol of the U. S. on neutral ground I would oppose changing that designation. RELee
