Resolution Congratulating Speaker Pelosi
WHEREAS, on January 4, 2007, history was made in America when the marble ceiling in the Capitol was shattered; and
WHEREAS, on that day, many firsts occurred – the first woman, the first native Marylander, the first Italian-American, the first Californian, the first mother and grandmother, and certainly the first chocolaholic, Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi became the 60th Speaker of the United States; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Pelosi hails from Baltimore, Maryland from a strong Democratic family and was schooled in the tradition of public service by her family; and
WHEREAS, her father, Thomas D’Alesandro, Jr., served as Mayor of Baltimore for 12 years after representing the city for five terms in Congress, and her brother, Thomas D’Alesandro III, also served as Mayor of Baltimore; and
WHEREAS, before serving in Congress, Nancy Pelosi served as California Democratic Party Chair and was a member of the Democratic National Committee; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Pelosi has served as a member of Congress since 1987 and has represented the 8th Congressional District in San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, in the fall of 2002, Nancy Pelosi was the first American woman in history to lead a major party in the US Congress by being overwhelmingly elected to the post of Minority Leader by the Democratic Caucus and held that post during the 107th, 108th and 109th Congresses of the United States; and
WHEREAS, before being elected Leader, Nancy Pelosi served as House Democratic Whip for one year and was responsible for the party’s legislative strategy in the House; and
WHEREAS, in 2002, Nancy Pelosi opposed the Iraq Resolution, authorizing President Bush to use military force against Iraq, and has been a critic of the war’s escalation; and
WHEREAS, it would take forever to list Nancy Pelosi’s legislative record and properly give it the credit it deserves, but to name a few she has fought for human rights, First Amendment rights, women’s rights, healthcare reform, environment and energy issues, education, foreign policy, immigration, ethics, and the war on terror; and
WHEREAS, not unlike President Roosevelt’s pledge for quick action on the part of government for his first 100 days in office during the Great Depression, Speaker Nancy Pelosi pledged in the first 100 hours for “A New Direction For America” by enacting 9/11 Commission recommendations, increasing the minimum wage, expanding stem cell research, negotiating for lower prescription drug prices, cutting interest rates on student loans, and ending subsidies for big oil and investing in renewable energy;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Democratic National Committee congratulates Nancy Pelosi on this incredible achievement and wishes her success in her role as the Leader of the House of Representatives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we thank her family, who has had a major supportive role in her success: husband Paul Pelosi (married September 7, 1963), children Nancy Corinne, Christine, Jacqueline, Paul Jr,. and Alexandra, and her six grandchildren.
