Democrats Call Out RNC's Silence on "Catch An Illegal Immigrant"

Posted by on February 27, 2007 at 03:15 PM

In an attempt to stun the country with its offensiveness, the Republican National Committee brushed off calls this week to put a halt to the College Republicans' "Catch an Illegal Immigrant" events across the country.

Just now, the Democratic National Committee delivered a letter to RNC Chairman Mel Martinez decrying the game. Our pictures from the delivery are below.

A key paragraph from a letter DNC Chairman Howard Dean and DNC Hispanic Caucus Chair Ramona Martinez sent to Martinez:

Mr. Chairman, we know that as an immigrant, you have a particularly personal understanding of what it means to come to a new country in search of a better life, by choice or otherwise. When you took the Chairmanship of the RNC you said there was no "question that the tone of the immigration debate was wrong" and that you expected to "be a voice...not an attack dog." Your voice is needed today. The RNC can and should speak out on this issue, but above all proactively engage the College Republicans to stop and prevent these vile activities that do nothing to create a constructive dialogue. Lastly, we call on you to join Democrats in our commitment to achieving the type of comprehensive immigration reform that's consistent with America's best traditions.

The New York Times reports the story:

College students from Michigan to Florida have found a new way to get attention, offend others and make a right-wing statement all at once. It's a game with a name that says it all: "Catch the Illegal Immigrant."

The game is a variation on hide and seek: one player poses as the immigrant, and everyone else tries to find that person. There's a prize, usually $200 or less, which is not much, but enough to celebrate the cheap exploitation of a fellow human.

"Catch the Immigrant" is the brainchild of an intern with the College Republican National Committee, who lost her post after coming up with this and other campus recruitment gimmicks. Another game, called "Fun With Guns," invited young Republicans to fire BB guns or paint balls at cardboard cutouts of Democratic leaders. Republican Party leaders have tried to distance themselves from the games, but seem to have done little to stop them.

Seriously uncool.

I suppose the GOP is grooming this intern for a run at the House in 2008? Is she working at the White House as Rove's new right hand man?

Seriously disgusting.

It's about time they were called out on it. Let's see what happens.

Si Se Puede!

Why anyone in The Democratic Party would waste their time on this issue is beyond me. So a bunch of drunken College Republicans play a stupid game. Big freakin' deal. Maybe if Democrats had spent more time on real issues rather than trying to be as politically correct as possible, people would actually respect them as a party. "Catch the immigrant" is a stupid, stupid thing to get all worked up about. It makes Democrats look like a bunch of whiney pussies.

Whatever troll,

Democrats are looking at the bigger picture. What the College Republicans are doing (REPEATEDLY) btw....is feeding the social discrimination that contributes to Social Inequality in this nation. These games are sending a social message that's unacceptable. We already have a difficult time fighting discrimination in Housing , Employment and Law Enforcement. We are not going to sit by and allow it to be bred on our College Campuses as well.

duh, what part of the fact that the last 12 years, the Dems were in the MINORITY did ya miss?! Do you know what that means? It means they could NOT spend time on real issues unless the Republicans let them, which they would not.

They have accomplished more in the first 100 hours than the Republicans did in their last 3 congresses all together!
As far as Republicans little games, HATE and RaCISM in any form, is intolerable, and if you want to let something like that go by, well it says a WHOLE LOT about you as a person! Bet your ancestors are the ones that said "Oh, let them have their slaves or you will look wimpy", and "Oh why give blacks and women the right to vote just because it is politically correct."

Regressives like Mel Martinez and the college republicans want immigrants to stay in Castro's Cuba.

The Whiney pussies are getting a bit agitated,
You people really got to me so her it goes.
First of all, I'm a Troll? What does that mean you retard? Second of all, I’m a descendent of many great people, most of whom were abolitionists. I know a great deal about the history of my family thanks to my Great Aunt. I’m also related to Lincoln, but that’s of no consequence. I’m not saying that Republicans aren’t racist and intolerant, they are. WIth a war going on, and people earning less than ever before, and so called “liberals” voting to give the President the authority they are vested under the constitution, I’d say some game college kids play is a stupid thing to get your panties in a twist over. There are REAL ISSUES out there. Also, the game is called Catch an ILLEGAL Immigrant. How is that sending a bad message? I admittedly don’t give a rats ass about illegal immigration, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing to catch ILLEGAL immigrants in reality, or in jest.

Now I’m going to rip apart one sentence in particular; “it means they could NOT spend time on real issues unless The Republicans let them.” So a minority party must get approval from the majority party to spend time on real issues? My god, you’ve done it. You’ve demonstrated the major flaw in the Democratic party for the last decade or so. They’re afraid to say anything that might anger anyone. And PamB, why are you being so hateful and judgmental? The people who play this game are just being drunk and stupid. There are plenty of examples of Republicans being racist and intolerant but this is not one of them. But as you’ve shown here today, there are also many examples of Democrats being hateful and intolerant. It is my opinion that Democrats have acted like a bunch of whiney pussies who are obsessed with political correctness to the point of fascism. Until they give this trait up, they will never turn any red states into blue. Holding this opinion doesn’t make me a bad person; something you’ve lightly suggested. I want Democrats to win, and that won’t happen as long as people like you make a stink over stupid shit like this game.

This is a good start by Chairman Dean, but I keep wanting him to do more. Even comprehensive immigration reform doesn't go far enough, since many Latinos would be shut out. The U.S. doesn't need borders anyway: as Chairman Dean will tell you, Mexico is our friend, and tens of millions more Mexicans are going to come here whether we like it or not. The Democratic platform is close to open borders, but it would make it much easier if we just came right out and admitted it. Why be so hush-hush about it?

Mel Martinez is silent on the very people who would have forced his family to go back to Castro's Cuba.

To be completely honest, I'm not surprised. As a recent college graduate, and a former College Democrat myself, I avow that our opposition club was often despicable in more ways than one. It's unfortunate that so many people forget that we're a nation of immigrants, for better or worse. Instead of embracing change, many of us prefer to remain stagnant in our habits and attitudes. Yet, this position is untenable: the only constant is change. But let’s face it, neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are willing to look at the immigration debate and suggest anything meaningful. Until we are willing to seriously ask ourselves why people want to live and work here, any measure or piece of legislation we write will merely touch the tip of the iceberg.

By the way, who’s that playboy in the picture? He makes me want to vote for the elephants in 2008, baby!

More typical, typical Repug hooliganism at work. While the kids are out playing tasteless, sheet-wearing games, their pug parents are parroting party-line bullshet that immigrants are taking American jobs.

No they're not. When's the last time you or anyone you ever, ever knew couldn't get a job because some illegal alien had taken it? That is, unless you were dying to get a job mowing lawns or flipping burgers (what the GOP calls "manufacturing jobs"). If you're over the age of 21 and that's the only kind of job you can compete for, then maybe you should have paid attention in school.

You certainly should be paying more attention now.

So, back to the question: When's the last time you or anyone you ever, ever knew couldn't get a job because some illegal alien had taken it?

That's right. Never. That is, with the foregoing exception. If you fall into that category, well, you're just pitiful and shouldn't be voting. Frankly, you shouldn't be walking around loose, either.

No amount of bigotry can cover the pure, absolute truth that the loss of American jobs has come strictly and solely at the hands of the GOP and their corporate (plantation) donors.

Truth told, American jobs have been steadily sold off to the highest bidders overseas. Technical support and customer service for all sorts of industries used to be answered in English by Americans. Now, thanks to "free trade" Republican policies, once you've dialed customer service, the voice that answers is answering from India.

No coincidence.

How about those Old Glories that WalMart plasters its aisles with? The fabric used to be made in the USA (much of that here in NC). Now it's hecho en Mexico, or woven and dyed in Chinese sweatshops, along with all the rest of the cheapazz shet they jokingly call "merchandise". Immigrants didn't do that to us. The GOP did. The voting records and manufacturer labels speak for themselves.

Sam Walton is spinning in his grave, because he used to pride himself on buying American goods from American manufacturers to sell to Americans. The GOP-loving new owners pride themselves on putting American workers out of a job and American companies out of business -- they buy mostly from China now. Try to find an American-made anything at WalMart. You almost can't.

Did immigrants do that? Don't be stupid. Of course they didn't. There's no way possible for them to have accomplished such a sweeping feat. Only big money and bought-and-paid-for politicians had the votes and and grasp. It's a fact that the mega-corporations donate almost reliably to GOP campaigns, legislation and interests.

The FEC numbers don't lie, and they're there for anyone to see.

Only fools or bigots wish to remain deluded about this "immigrant problem" (which is only a shell-game to distract the stupid) and deny that it's purely and solely the GOP that have sold Americans, American resources and the American way of life for profit overseas. The indisputable facts and the money trails point out clearly that the blame lies strictly with the corporate bought-and-paid-for GOP.

EDITORIAL: Meltdown over Fox

Network co-sponsors state Democratic debate -- oh my!

Hard-core liberals can't stand the Fox News Channel. Passing a television that's tuned to the conservative favorite forces many of them to close their eyes, cover their ears and scream, "La la la la la la la la la!" Then they dash to their computers and fire off 2,500 e-mails condemning the outlet, none of which are ever read.

But liberals' aversion to Fox News has finally gone over the top. The Nevada Democratic Party had agreed to let the right-tilting network co-sponsor, of all things, an August debate in Reno between Democratic presidential candidates. Party officials were serious about drawing national attention to the state's January presidential caucus, the country's second in the 2008 nominating process. What better way for the party to reach conservative and "values" voters who might consider changing allegiances?

But the socialist, Web-addicted wing of the Democratic Party was apoplectic. The prospect of having to watch Fox News to see their own candidates would have been torture in itself. So they set the blogosphere aflame with efforts to kill the broadcast arrangement, or at least have all the candidates pull out of the event. Before Friday, the opportunistic John Edwards was the only candidate to jump on that bandwagon.

You'd think the deal called for having Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter mock the candidates between comments. No, even unfiltered, unedited, live debate between loyal Democrats couldn't be entrusted to Fox News.

The approach of outfits such as MoveOn.org is so juvenile it's laughable. Imagine if every political organization created litmus tests for news organizations before agreeing to appear on their programming. Republicans would have boycotted PBS, CBS, NBC, ABC, National Public Radio and The Associated Press decades ago.

This hyperventilation results from the fact that far-left Democrats have no comparable media outlet, nor any widespread national appeal, for their radical views in favor of heavy-handed regulation, wealth redistribution, diplomatic capitulation and economic protectionism. So they attack their rivals' messenger with a reckless barrage of rhetoric that cuts down their own allies with friendly fire.

By Friday, the Nevada Democratic Party caved in to the lunatic fringe and beganseeking a more "appropriate" television partner.

Comedy Central, perhaps?

Comedy Central tends to be more factual than Faux...er Fox News.
Fox would have come up with some kind of "commentary" after the debate.
You can't trust Fox, why would any Democrats be dumb enough to hand Fox the key to the hen house?
