DNC Celebrates Black History Month
Today, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, Vice Chairwoman Lottie Shackelford and Black Caucus Chairwoman Virgie Rollins issued the following joint statement celebrating the start of Black History Month:
"Today, marks the start of Black History Month, during which we celebrate the great accomplishments and contributions of African Americans to our nation. America's history is one of a diverse nation with many cultures co-existing under a common patriotism. As we celebrate we are reminded of the added richness that this diversity brings to our national story and the hope of the American dream, which crosses both racial and ethnic lines.
"Recently, we have seen the continuation of progress with steps such as the renewal of the historic Voting Rights Act. Its passage was a fitting tribute to the legacy of two great civil rights leaders our nation had lost in the preceding months, Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks. But our country still faces tremendous challenges and the fight for justice and equality for all remains important.
"As Democrats, we are especially proud of the deep connection and history between the African American community and the Democratic Party. From the civil rights movement to the modern struggle for social justice, Democrats are committed to ensuring that African Americans join all Americans in achieving the American dream. It is in this same spirit that we will continue to fight for equality and justice and speak out against discrimination and bigotry as we celebrate Black History all year round."
