Senate Keeps Troop Withdrawal Deadline

Posted by Michael Link on March 27, 2007 at 06:15 PM

With the civil war in Iraq spiraling out of control, the Senate voted for a troop withdrawal deadline for American combat troops. The language will remain in the Senate version of the emergency spending bill that recently passed in the House of Representatives. President Bush promised a veto of the bill if it gets to his desk.

By a vote of 50-48, the Senate defeated an amendment that would have stricken the withdrawal language from a $121.6 billion bill that mostly would fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A final vote on the bill is expected later this week.

As Governor Dean said the other day after the House passed the spending bill:

President Bush's open-ended commitment to a failed Iraq policy is not good enough for our brave men and women fighting in Iraq. Democrats will continue to wholeheartedly support our troops by providing the resources to keep them safe and get them home, holding this Administration accountable, and demanding that Iraqis take responsibility for their own country.

President Bush’s decision to stifle the essential debate on our course in Iraq by threatening to veto this bill stands solidly against the will of the American people, and is an insult to the brave men and women serving in Iraq. It is time for Republicans to put partisanship aside and join our Democratic leadership in fighting for the new direction in Iraq. It’s what our troops deserve and what the American people have demanded.

Shockingly, John McCain decided to grace the Senate with his presence this time (after missing other important Iraq votes).

Next step is to cut the money off. Personally, as a taxpayer, I'm only willing to allow enough money to fly our kids and equipment back home and pay for the injured to rebuild their lives.

I saw the funniest thing on CNN, today.

McCain was on Blitzer and told him that he had better get 'updated' things were better in Baghdad, there are streets in Baghdad that you could walk around without worry. That Gen Petreas went out without armor and walked around. You just don't see the good things on the news.

Right after that interview, Wolf got a report from thier Baghdad reporter.

He told him what Mc Cain had said, the reporter looked absolutely shocked. He said that Mc Cain needed to be 'updated'. "you hear that? That is helicopters flying right over us in a fire fight, right now. There is no safe place to go out and walk around in Bagdad. When the Gerneral goes out he ids surrounded by tanks and troops. No one would try that, alone, here.

Wolf then asked him, 'Well, is there any place you can go inside, like a restaurant, and sit down, and have a meal?'

The reporter, again, looked incredulous, and said, after stammering....'In a word? NO!

I laughed out loud. I had just told my husband, that SOB is lying, when Mc Cain was on. I doubt, we will see that 'exchange' again. Some how, those reporst 'get lost', after one accidental showing. (the reporter was live)

They are also saying that the 'new plan is working'. 'there is some success', it's working'.

Reported, last night, on INN World Report, 168 Iraqis found on Sat., 78 on Sun.,(I'm not sure of the exact # but that is close) and 7 US troops. God only knows, how many, around the rest of Iraq.

Yes, the surge is working. Just like the last 3 surges in Baghdad.........not at all.

OMG, didn't edit that post. Looks like a 6- year-old, posted it.
1. When the General goes out he is surrounded by...
2. Somehow, those reports.....

President Bush said that he plans to veto Democrats bill that has a time table to withdraw from Iraq, he said he is the decider but he has to understand he is not the sole decider and the American people have a say in this which is exactly why it's important for everyone here to contact your Senators and Representatives now and tell them you think both Bush and Cheney should be impeached. I couldn't believe what I was reading at msnbc.com so I decided to pass it on. The following is a direct quote taken from a piece entitled "Senate votes for Iraq withdrawal by next March".

The effect of the timeline would be to “snatch defeat from the jaws of progress in Iraq,” agreed Lieberman, who won a new term last fall in a three-way race after losing the Democratic nomination to an anti-war insurgent.

Notice that this piece, produced by the Associated Press, refers to the Democratic nominee in last year's Connecticut Senate race Ned Lamont as an insurgent, thus likening him to the very powers that fight to prevent American influences in Iraq from successfully completing their mission to free Iraqis.

What kind of scum do we have working as journalists these days who refer wrongly to Joe Lieberman as an independent democrat and to his true Democratic opponent as an insurgent? This is clearly not an individual who functions free from partisan politics but instead is representative of one who uses his position to promote personal and in this case political opinion rather than the facts.

Is there no more journalistic integrity at the Associated Press?

Please also contact Senator Hillary Clinton and tell her you're against the Iraq war and want to end the war. Tell her that you're also against any permanent army bases built in Iraq. Please be polite so that your comments will be taken serious. Be sure to also let Hillary know why you're against the Iraq war and why you feel Bush and Cheney should be impeached. Here's the transcript from the Blitzer interview with reporter, Michael Ware:

BLITZER: So is Baghdad really getting safer? A very different view of the reality there from our own reporter on the ground who says Senator McCain couldn't be more wrong. Let's go back to CNN's Michael Ware.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BLITZER: Michael, you've been there, what, for four years. You're walking around Baghdad on a daily basis. Has there been this improvement that Senator McCain is speaking about?

MICHAEL WARE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, I'd certainly like to bring Senator McCain up to speed, if he ever gives me the opportunity. And if I have any difficulty hearing you right now, Wolf, that's because of the helicopter circling overhead and the gun battle that is blazing just a few blocks down the road.

Is Baghdad any safer? Sectarian violence, one particular type of violence, is down. But none of the American generals here on the ground have anything like Senator McCain's confidence.

I mean, Senator McCain's credibility now on Iraq, which has been so solid to this point, has now been left out hanging to dry. To suggest that there's any neighborhood in this city where an American can walk freely is beyond ludicrous. I'd love Senator McCain to tell me where that neighborhood is and he and I can go for a stroll.

And to think that General David Petraeus travels this city in an unarmed Humvee? I mean, in the hour since Senator McCain has said this, I've spoken to some military sources and there was laughter down the line. I mean, certainly, the general travels in a Humvee. There are multiple Humvees around it, heavily armed. There are attack helicopters, Predator drones, sniper teams, all sorts of layers of protection.

So, no, Senator McCain is way off base on this one -- Wolf.

BLITZER: Michael, when Senator McCain says that there are at least some areas of Baghdad where people can walk around and whether it's General Petraeus, the U.S. military commander, or others, are there at least some areas where you could emerge outside of the Green Zone, the international zone, where people can go out, go to a coffee shop, go to a restaurant, and simply take a stroll?

WARE: I can answer this very quickly, Wolf. No. No way on Earth can a Westerner, particularly an American, stroll any street of this capital of more than 5 million people.

I mean, if al Qaeda doesn't get wind of you, or if one of the Sunni insurgent groups don't descend upon you, or if someone doesn't tip off a Shia militia, then the nearest criminal gang is just going to see dollar signs and scoop you up. Honestly, Wolf, you'd barely last 20 minutes out there.

I don't know what part of Neverland Senator McCain is talking about when he says we can go strolling in Baghdad.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

BLITZER: And we have just learned that two Americans were killed tonight in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad.
-------------------------------------

Oh yeah, Baghdad is safer and America is safer.

Tell the media: We want to end the Iraq war
The opinion pages are the most popular pages in the newspaper, and if thousands of us write, we can help shape public opinion. Even if your letter isn't published it shows editors how folks really feel and influences the way they cover stories. It only takes a few minutes. Click on link below to take action:

So is Iraq really getting safer like Bush/Cheney and other Republicans would like you to believe?
The answer is no, it's more of the same. Here's a good example of terrible things that continue to happen nearly every single day in Iraq.

***

Truck blasts kill 50 in Iraq town
Insurgents have blown up two trucks in the Iraqi town of Talafar, killing 50 people and injuring 125, police say. Other attacks took the day's death toll across Iraq to around 80.

Tom DeLay goes home to Sugarland, TX, but only gets greeted by about 100 people. Aww...must be tough after the media blitz he had and how much they loved him on TV. Sugarland's population is over 75,000...not very many.

What is more shocking to me is John McCain is on the today show this morning spouting off.Why aren`t these shows balancing out by putting on the other arguments? He`s going on like we`re actually turning things in Iraq now?Turning it to what?

I am the mother of a soldier in Iraq.

Mark this date in your calendar, your kids will be reading about this day in a history book. A completely useless piece of legislature that should be named “the date for surrender” passed today in the Senate. Think of this bill as kind of like saying, ok, if you don’t let me win by 1:00, I’m going home. You don’t have to be a military strategist to know that the other team is going to step it up until the deadline.

The following is an example of what the senators who backed this legislature are saying:

"Senator Edward Kennedy said it showed how far the Democratic Congress had come toward removing troops since the beginning of the year."

This begs the question; does Senator Kennedy think a non-binding bill is “bringing troops home”? “NON BINDING”, these would be the key words. Teddy….NON BINDING….. Should we send him a dictionary?

The only thing accomplished by this bill is a pitiful appeal by Senators for approval and a confirmation of our failure as a country to remain united.

This will bring some troops home alright, just not in the passenger section of the plane, more like a coffin in the cargo hold.

ruthis: They're already coming back by the plane load, many in boxes, many more on litters with IVs attached.
Pray for your soldier, I am.
This conflict was started so the uber-rich could get richer, and our kids are being ground up like meat in a food mill.
Many of the ones who live through it are suffering from PTSD, physical brain trauma injuries, loss of limbs, of sight, of mobility, and from neglect from an uncaring system.
The ones who survive are sent back again and again, the ones who are maimed are neglected, the ones who die are hidden from public view.
For what?
We are creating more terrorists than we are eliminating. We are not tracking down the terrorists who caused 9-11. We are not helping the causes of peace, justice, or freedom.
Don't fall for the lies of the conscienceless sociopaths who are promoting this illegal "war" with lies, and threats.
We must stand up to this wannabe conquerer who has destroyed our rights and the rights of others for the sake of the false god of riches, while hypocritically prating about "Jesus", about being "Born again", about "God talks to me".
God doesn't know them.
We need to cut the depredations of his corrupt administration as short as possible and end the sufferings of so many as soon as we can.
STAND UP TO THE DICTATOR!
INVESTIGATE!!! IMPEACH!!!! INDICT!!!!
END THE MADNESS!!!

I have some questions:
1) What does "non-binding" mean in this bill? Could it all be just for show?
2) What is all that extra "pork" doing in this bill - could the critics be right - were some votes "bought"? After all, the Democrats promised to end pork projects.
3) If this war is illegal and only to make Bush's oil cronies rich, why will our precious troops be allowed to "shed their blood for oil" right up until the next election? Why not defund the war now?
I hate when our Congressional leaders take us for fools. We need to quit letting them divide us. There are more important issues right now then impeaching anybody. Don't lose sight of them - as they would have you do.
