FBI Raid Targets Second Republican Congressman

Posted by Stephanie Taylor on April 20, 2007 at 10:03 AM

Yesterday afternoon, the FBI raided a business owned by the wife of Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ). This follows an FBI raid earlier this week on the home of Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA). Both raids were conducted as part of ongoing corruptions investigations.

As a result of the raid, Renzi is stepping down from his seat on the House Intelligence Committee, according to a statement from his office.

The congressman’s father, Retired Major General Eugene Renzi, is executive vice-president of ManTech International Corp., a defense contractor. In 2003, Rep. Renzi sponsored legislation that dealt hundreds of millions of dollars to ManTech. ManTech was also the largest contributor to his 2002 congressional campaign and the second largest contributor to his 2004 campaign. From a report by CREW:

If Rep. Renzi accepted campaign contributions from ManTech in exchange for pushing through legislation benefiting the company, he would be in violation of federal bribery laws. His actions on behalf of his father may have also violated conflict-of-interest rules and the requirement that Members of the House conduct themselves "at all times in a manner that reflects creditably on the House."

And it all comes back to Attorneygate...

ThinkProgress reports that there are also suspicions that Paul Charlton, the former U.S. Attorney in Arizona, was fired in part because of his probe into Renzi’s activities.

One thing that has stood out due to the deafening silence of the MSM on the subject: There were several of the fired DA's who were working on active cases against corrupt Republicans. Is this not a clear-cut case of obstruction of justice?

Does this not also include the Republican congressionals who leaned on the DA's to drop cases against Republican incumbents or hopefuls; the same Republican congressionals who leaned on Rove and Gonzo to get said DA's fired for pursuing cases against the incumbents -- cases where there was clearly enough evidence to continue pursuit?

Gonzogate is far deeper and far worse than mainstream media have implied. I do hope that the Dems who are leading the new investigations have the nerve and moral fiber to clean out the filthy infestation of Republican money-for-legislation corruption.

These investigations need to include the money-for-legislation deals with Big Oil (none other than Dick Cheney's authorship) and Big Pharma. These two sets of paid-for legislation have screwed the American citizenry as much as the illegal war on Iraq. Moreover, the Cheneyburton/Blackwater illegal private militias must be disbanded and their activities in Azerbaijan and Paraguay must be fully exposed.

The depth of Republican depravity and lawlessness knows no bottom.

...This stuff is great but for most americans it's "yep, we knew that, who's left on american idol" And sadly, or ironically, it's like the "whack a mole" strategy employed as an excuse for the occupation of Iraq.

The pug's are all sitting on an under inflated air mattress and when we jump on one side of the bed, one bounces in the air and occassionally, one falls off.

Perhaps and before Gonzo leaves the table, one of our more inquiring minds could ask "Hey Albert, did Paul Charlton get thrown under the bus by your department because he was sniffin into the Renzi affair??"

Doesn't this corruption make you goddamn mad? Hell, we spent trillions on defense against the "Evil Empire's" ideology and its "threat to Democracy". Shit, the whole time the enemy is embedded within, calling themselves Christians. Judus was more than those bastards. Republicans, are just revealing their true character. If they were moral instead of moralistic, self-rightious, pigs, I'd credit them as such and would vote for them, because I vote the man, not the party nessesarily (I whole heartedly apologize to pigs for linking their good name to this. And the Republican right should apologize to Christ for turning many people away by exibiting behavior that is anything but Christian). The Shining City ON A HILL is now a land-fill, full of rot. Pathogenic!

Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddist or Hindu, I don't care. Religion doesn't make a intelligent representative. Intelligence and wisdom which begins with intelligence makes good representatives and executives of office.
I only care about straight, honest behavior from myself and everyone else, not greed and gluttony.

The gov't REALLY is a true reflection of the people: fat, dumb, stupid and very lazy. The American people mindlessly give their power away to the gov't that mindlessly gives power to the corporations and other nations.

I can't fully express my anger at the complacent, foolish nation we've become. Eager to go to war, feed a gargantuan federal gov't that subjugates its people who are too busy with sports, American Idol, Entertainment Tonight, etc. to see what is happening. Muslem's have radicals steering their gov'ts and America has its own. Both sets of radicals "know that they do no wrong" and are convinced that subjugating others with their brand of moral judgement justifies its means. In America, it's the run away local, state and federal gov'ts with radical consuming ideas that KNOWS what's right and do as they please.

Our biggest threat is not only the environment but the enemy within: US!

This is also a good lesson for Democratic politicians.Keep it clean and above board or that may be you later on down the road!Ethical and corruption violations are always there please don`t fall in those pitfalls, too! What happens to this guy is to be seen, and I would be even more upset if democrats end up going the same way.

Nobody likes to be made a fool of by somebody dumber than themselves.

I think there are enough sheep ready to cut the cord especially when they see their middle class life style slipping away and wondering if the worthless occupation will ever end.

This latest revelation of Republican corruption illustrates the importance of the investigations of the firings of the US attorneys. It is obvious that the criminal Bush Administration has an agenda to politicize the DOJ. This is illegal, and everyone who is involved should be held to account. Bush, and Cheney, ( the guy who is really in charge ) should be impeached! The congress can't just sit by and watch while this administration continues to commit crimes. To do so would be a violation of the oath they swore to uphold the constitution, which is now under attack. All of the lower officials who have been involved with promoting the crimes of this administration should be tried, convicted, and sentenced to long prison terms. We the people need to make an example of these crooks to prevent such crimes from occuring in the future.

So goes the continual corruption within Congress, both Republican and Democratic Party alike.

WHERE ARE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY LEADERS WITHIN CONGRESS, AND 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES?

Independents across America are looking for honest and strong leaders that will truly embrace ethics reform.

Concerned citizens continue to ask the question: What is the status of the creation of the promised Office of Public Integrity within the House and Senate. The much needed independent office - a Democratic Party Nov. 2006 election promise?

The Democratic Party and leadership talk a good game about ethics reform, but only enacting transparency and trivial restrictions.

Only a handful introduced legislation (S192 & 230, H.R. 422) to create these minimal cost offices. Yet, they will NOT bring either to the floor for a vote and have failed the American citizen AGAIN!

This is why Congress (both Party's) have such low credibility and trust in the eyes of the American public.

I do not believe the Democratic Party (nor the Republican) are serious about bringing meaningful and lasting change of ethics reform within Congress.

The minimal changes on gifts, disclosure and transparency are trivial in respect to REAL oversight by an independent Office of Public Integrity.

Speakers Reid and Pelosi, and the Democratic Party have been given an opportunity by middle class Independents (like myself) that believe in ethics and fiscal discipline within the Federal government.

The Democratic Party and Congress appear to no longer embrace a bipartisan office that will provide much needed oversight, accountability and consequences/punishment to members of Congress that have broken the trust of the American public and taxpayer.

Power, legislation and our treasury will continue to corrupt our Congressional process and its members. 30,000 Lobbyists again are "banking" on the Democratic Party to fail on their promise of the Office of Public Integrity.

All Federal Agencies have an Inpector General, and even the White House has an Office of Public Integrity.

Where was the outrage to the House Ethics investigation(coverup) of the Mark Foley R-FL "don't ask, don't tell" predator club of our adolescent Pages.

I do not believe anyone received punishment or even admonishment; and Foley was allowed to retire on a comfortable retirement at taxpayers expense.

Also, what about Rep. Jefferson (D-LA) who had $90,000 in his freezer; again where is the public (Party) outrage and accountability?

Until Speakers Reid and Pelosi (TO INCLUDE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES) go public and endore legislation for these minimal cost offices, Independents and others like myself will NEVER trust "the new an improved Democratic Party of 2006", nor their Presidential candidates.

If the political Party's think that this issue will go away or is no longer a priority, they are sadly mistaken.

Voters and the American public will not forget broken promises and a lost opportunity for REAL oversight and accountability.

TO all: If you truly believe in ethics and fisical discipline in Congress, PLEASE embrace and work towards the creation of this important office.

America's treasury (whats left after staggering debt) belongs to all hard working American's, NOT the lobbyists of greed that represent the top 1% and corrupted businsess entities.

THANKYOU!

I'd like to thank fade2bluz for your comment.

Harborman makes some really good points too!

In the final analysis, Those who take the time to view these blogs are very concerned citizens of a country awashed in corruption from the top down.

This corruption is prosperous for the top 1% and is financially detrimental to the remainder.

Why would those with so much begrudge so many with so little?

I remember a teacher in high school said that no company or corporation would ever get so large that the federal gov't couldn't rein it in. However, in those days we probably thought that a lobbist was someone who enjoyed standing in lobbys. Also, in those days legislators conducted themselves with integrity for fear of public backlash. Now as result of decades of disappointment after disappointment in the federal gov't not doing the will of the people but the will of the gargantuan federal gov't and corporate lobbyist, we've become numb and apathetic.

We as nation are in danger of losing more of our freedoms and treasury if we continue on this path of apathy.

Every election I talk to people and ask if they intend to vote. The majority response is the same: Why, it doesn't make a difference? I respond to them and say, rich people vote. They protect themselves and their expanding wealth and power, so we must vote to protect ourselves. Many no longer see their vote having a voice and therefore don't vote. That consequently insures a more downward financial spiral for most of us.

Lobbyist must be eliminated by voting out of office all Democrats and Republicans who prostitute gov't by hearing the voice of lobbyist above the voice of the master: the employer, the common American.
