McCain's Baghdad Market IED Joke
Posted by Michael Link on April 25, 2007 at 09:51 AM
Last night on the Daily Show, trying to quell the firestorm of criticism that erupted after his stroll through a Baghdad market with a few buddies (i.e. 100 Soldiers, 3 Blackhawks, and 2 Apache Gunships), a sometimes-snippy John McCain attempted to joke his way out of it:
"I had something really picked out for you [Jon]. It's a nice -- yeah -- it's a nice little IED to put under your desk."
As you probably know, the day after McCain visited the market, 21 Iraqis working there "were abducted and murdered." The joke reminds me of the famous one told by President Bush about the phantom weapons of mass destruction: "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere. Nope, no weapons over there ... maybe under here?"
The joke, of course, backfired.
Today John McCain will officially announce his candidacy for president, but it seems an increasing number of Americans are asking whether he can be taken seriously.

My cousin would think that's hillarious. Kid is somewhere in Iraq dodging IEDs and EFPs. I'd expect more from a veteran, but then again, we're talking about Sen. McCain.
McCain of all people should know better. I wonder if he's in early stages of Alzheimer's, just like Regan was when he was in office.
What is it about the Republicans? They keep fielding these mental cases for presidential candidates.
Jon Stewart tried repeatedly to ask a number of serious questions that are on the minds of millions of Americans and it was really annoying how McCain kept talking over top of him. Instead of participating in an honest debate, McCain tried to prevent Jon from speaking, ignored his questions, dismissed the facts he presented and implied that Jon didn’t support the troops. Throughout the entire interview, Jon still treated McCain with the utmost respect. That was pretty annoying, too.
Make a comment like that in a class here in Michigan and you would be doin' time. The "I.E.D Express comes to a town near you"
Narcissism is rampant!!
This sounds just like Bush when he was joking around at the correspondence dinner in a video where they showed him looking under his bed for WMDs. "Not here either. Ha. Ha."
McCain is beginning to think and act just like The Decider. This is just not a sane way to deal with serious topics. He's trivalizing the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians?

Butte, I've noticed this, too. McCain just isn't acting rational. I hope his wife gets him checked out soon.
Take a close look at the expression on his face. The wheels aren't spinning right.
Mike--great work. I love coming home from work, after listening to the angry men spew their rage and undying loyalty to their party, and finding this oasis.
Believe it or not, this resonates with that dirty third. Some of these folks will only dig their heels in deeper, but by the time the election rolls around, the truth will bring us home.
Thank you for all your excellent goodies!
Frankly I don't know why Democrats are surprised that McCain is making remarks like his suggestion that there are parts of Baghdad where a westerner can go for an unarmed stroll.
Look, this is just primary politics. Playing to the base. In order to win the Republican nomination the ultimate nominee will obviously have to win over the 28% or so of Americans, almost all of them Republicans, who still support George Bush and his "strategy" in Iraq. That means playing to the base. Playing to their core values. You know...acting and talking like a delusional whack job to court, well...delusional whack job voters.
After he gets the nomination he'll have almost three months to convince the majority of Americans that he shouldn't be kept in a straight jacket and have his daily mix of liquid cane sugar and thorazine fed to him intravenously by big, brawny male nurses.
No problems. Bring it on, Johnny...
It just goes to show how seriously he takes this war.... as if he had his own independent thoughts on the matter. I'm tired of hearing these guys repeat the same rhetoric. If they had a clue, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in. Oh, but McCain will come on national TV and try to talk like he's a subject matter expert.
I was in Baghdad. I'm the subject matter expert. I could only DREAM that he'd actually go shopping in Baghdad. I wouldn't put it past him.... he's not too bright, ya know?
I watched that show, and what I am confused at is why the audience has to applaud when he comes out. I know if I were there, I would either boo, or if told I could not, certainly would not clap my hands together for him.
Respect is EARNED, and McCain has lost any he ever had, the day he forgave what Rove and the Republicans did to him and his family in South Carolina with the smears. A man who does not stand up for his wife and child, is not much of a man.
MCCAIN NEEDS TO APOLOGIZE FOR HIS COMMENTS OR JOKE HE MADE ON THE DAILY SHOW ABOUT THROWING IED THAT ARE KILLING OUR TROOPS IN IRAQ UNDER JON STEWART'S DESK. REMEMBER JOHN KERRY WHEN MCCAIN WAS THE FIRST TO CONDEMN HIM AND DEMAND HE APOLOGIZE
McCain said that he would rather lose the election than abandon the conviction that a troop withdrawal from Iraq was a bad idea.
I don't think Senator McCain will have any problem losing the election, but if he thinks withdrawing from Iraq is such a bad idea, why couldn't he be bothered to cast his vote today on the funding bill? McCain needs to shut his foul yap and grow a spine. A comedian he ain't.
