Poll: Americans Trust Democrats on Iraq War Policy
Posted by Stephanie Taylor on April 18, 2007 at 10:57 AM
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll of 1,141 adults shows that 58 percent of Americans trust the Democrats in Congress to do a better job handling the situation in Iraq, compared to only 33 percent who trust President Bush.
This number has grown since February, when polls showed that 54 percent of Americans trusted the Democrats in Congress more than Bush.
The news comes as Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) prepare for a White House meeting with President Bush that many have billed as a “showdown” over Iraq. At stake is whether the president signs into law the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill.
The legislation, passed by both the House and Senate, offers a plan for a responsible end to the war in Iraq, including new rules for resting, equipping and training combat troops. The legislation also includes a 2008 date for the final withdrawal of U.S. troops.
President Bush has already announced that he plans to veto the legislation.
Today’s poll shows that 56 percent of Americans now favor withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq, even if civil order is not restored.
President Bush and Vice-President Cheney continue to make the case that the war in Iraq is related to the fight against terrorism. But a growing number of Americans disagree. 57 percent now believe that the Iraq war is separate from the fight against terrorism--and that the United States can still win the fight against terrorism without being involved in the civil war in Iraq.
The poll also showed that President Bush’s overall job approval rating is stagnant at 35 percent. 70 percent of Americans disapprove of how he has handled the war.

"70 percent of Americans disapprove of how he has handled the war."
as i include myself, GWB's veto threat? let him. then congress comes back with even a more restrictive spending bill. when he vetos that, add a few more restrictions. since he wants a "clean bill," so be it. maybe include that those monetary plunders aka no-bid contractors aka cohorts of GWB be surcharged to repay families of our finest who lost their lives or top notch rehab for those maimed. That surely would gain support among taxpayer footing GWB's obliterating the pottery rule's foley.
He's handling a war? I thought he was just lining the pockets of his war profiteer friends. Let me know when he's willing to fully fund the troops. The last I heard he's planning on vetoing the supplemental that would fully fund materials and trainging for those in the field...and the wounded vets who now have to "prove" they gave everything for their country.
Dems gain as Bush blusters

Who would Americans "rather have a beer with?"
Vertebrates, says the Washington Post-ABC News poll:
Democrats appear to be standing on firm political ground, as they work toward a final bill. A Washington Post-ABC News poll of 1,141 adults, conducted April 12-15, found that 58 percent trusted the Democrats in Congress to do a better job handling the situation in Iraq, compared with 33 percent who trusted Bush.
The president has taken advantage of Congress's spring recess to pound Democrats over their legislation, which would impose benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet; create strict rules for resting, equipping and training combat troops; and set a 2008 date for the final withdrawal of U.S. troops. Despite those efforts, Bush has lost a little ground to Democrats, who in February were trusted by 54 percent to set Iraq policy.
Americans know what's happening with the Iraq occupation. They know the position of Bush and his apologists is for endless war. They know they screwed the troops, and they know everything Bush touches turns to crap.
It's time to turn over the keys, Mr. Pretzeldent. It's over.
****
Pretzeldent!!!! Tee, Hee, Hee.
I still favor impeaching the Pretzeldent and the Pretzel Meister Cheney.
Bush has already spent $340 billion on Iraq War thus far, but who got the profit? People in Iraq? They are shouting loud that “American, get out!” while Bush wants to send 15,000 more troops. That’s why we can’t support Bush and his supporters.
It is clear that the military solution is not working. Why don't they try to bring peace by sending humanitarian aid instead of troops and weapons?
According to The Borgen Project, it only costs $19 billion to end global poverty and hunger. Compare to the amount Bush spent on his “War on Terror", this annual cost is very little.
I hope our next political leader will make a commitment to the UN Millennium Development Goals which will end global poverty and starvation. It is really not so hard if we are truly willing to make a change and bring peace to the world not by military solution but by humanitarian aid.
The president has taken advantage of Congress's spring recess to pound Democrats over their legislation
rjsnj,
Nobody is listening, are they? He's considered a failure even by his closest friends. They are all writing books and can't wait till he leaves office so they can cash in.
it only costs $19 billion to end global poverty
KatieL,
We could have ended global poverty and warming 100 times over if Bush hadn't invaded the wrong country. What a complete idiot.
Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I'm marveling how a president who invades a sovereign nation with ideas of "pre-emptive strategy" and is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands can survive unscathed, when a president who got a simple blow-job was impeached... what's going on?? Are we so sick as a nation that death means nothing to us - unless it happens in our own back yard???
It's time to turn up the heat & express yourself.
Contact your Representatives and Senators now and tell them enough is enough, it's time to end the Iraq war now. No more excuses, we want the troops home now. You can take action by simply clicking on the links below:

Reallity If flight 93 Had been traveling toward LA and those Americans had brought that plane down near Hollywood, all the stars and left wingers would be talking a different story these days.
Even the polls show that the majority of Americans are behind the Democrats! Please have the courage to stand strong on this bill!Show the American public that you have the courage to stand against these fear mongers.Behind the facade lives cowards and what crawls from under rocks!Expose it to the world and have the guts to stand for something!

This is great news. Now the Democratic party has to stay there. We all know that polls can go down. So the Democrats have to show that they are listing to the people of U.S.A and keep those poll numbers up. I think they are doing all they can on Bush's personal war. But there are other things that can hurt the Democrats. Like gun control. This is not a good time to bring up anything about gun control. Its been a losing Item for the Democrats. We cannot do anything stupid and give the Republicans a open hand at winning. We had a very insane thing happen at Virginia Tech. But for right now I think Virginia should make there gun laws there job not Washington D.C at this time. If the Democratic party is smart we can win the White House and keep control of the Senate and the House. But only if they are smarter then the Republicans.
The administration tries to call anyone who criticizes their policy in Iraq 'anti-troop,' but the interviews below show that 'supporting the troops' does NOT mean supporting an endless war. The voices of these veterans and military families are missing from the debate in Washington. Together we can make sure they become a vital part of the national dialogue around ending the war. You watch the videos and tell us what you think. Then, Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone will turn it into a TV ad-spreading this message even further.

Yeah, that's the Republican solution about everything. If it's a problem build a wall around it.
We're getting a wall around the Sunnis, a wall between us and Mexico, and a multitude of stone-walls attempting to block the investigations of the myriad of problems caused by this administration that Washington should only be navigated with a Cat D12 bulldozer.
Maybe Bush's new nickname should be "The Rock". He's about as smart as one.
It is my opinion that the Iraq war has always been separate from the fight against terrorism. President Bushwack used 9/11 over and over again to convince the country otherwise. It has been obvious from the start that Petrolium Products and Global Oilfield Services - Halliburton
have been the only ones to benefit from this devasating war. The tragic fatalies continue on a daily basis for all sides. The destruction of Iraq continues and Bush plans to help rebuild?!! (Meanwhile our country suffers from lack of funding for rebuilt infrastructures, healthcare and education.)
I applaud our Democratic Congressional Team for continuing to fight for a troop withdrawal timeline in the near future.
Bush will continue his rampage about being unpatriotic and unsupportive of the troops. However, I beleive it is Patriotic to protect our troops from needless injuries and further deaths. I also am confident that the United States can still help to win the fight against terrorism if we work with a united World. We do not and should not have continue our involvement with the civil war in Iraq.

YOU A-HOLES DIDN'T POLL ME!!! WE NEED TO WIN THIS WAR! HARRY REID AND ALL OF YOU PUSSIES ARE GOING TO BRING DOWN YOUR RIDICULOUS DEFEATIST PARTY. NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY SINCE THE LIMP WRISTED JIMMY CARTER WAS AT THE HELM.
Instead of saying "we lost the war" in Iraq, wouldn't it be more accurate and more palateable to say that the Iraqi's have lost the war by their lack of commitment, and unwillingness to go and fight where they are needed, etc. It seems to me like they are more than willing to take the back seat and let our troops do the dirty work. More troops is exactly what we do NOT need in Iraq. As long as we stay on the present course, the only thing we are going to suceede in doing is killing more of our troops. It's time to WAKE UP AMERICA.
I am a registered Democrat and I usually do not participate in blog writing. However, with the state of politics today; I feel compelled to write, and write for change. The discontent I feel towards both Democrats and Republicans is equal.
However, when I calculate the potential immediate and future damage the political parties will cost this great country, it is by far the democrats who potentially put this country at the greatest risk.
With the likes of Pelosi, Reid, Clintons, Murtha, and the rest of the socialist, I am appalled at their behavior towards this country. I have never witnessed such betrayal to its citizenry, and appeasement to the enemy that these individuals have displayed.
I do not agree with everything a certain party says or stands for, but the far left democrats are anti-US in ideology regarding all matters, from Iraq, to Immigration.
If the Democrats do not get-rid of the anti-US far left, this party is finished. Moderate Democrats are repulsed at these individuals, their ideology and the future of their course. Everything the once great Democrats stood for, eg… unions, balanced trade, U.S. workers, nationalism etc….. ; no longer exist and Moderate Democrats are leaving in droves. Today the Democrats are more concerned with the enemy and illegal aliens then they are for Americans. They represent the views and support anything derogatory to the U.S. and its citizens, including those who are sacrificing their lives for this country.
The above mentioned individuals are disgrace to this country, and a threat to our existence, and the demise of the once great Democratic Party.
I along with many others will vote Independent or Republican to halt or decrees any further chance of their political existence.
Former Democrat
shortguy: It's not the far left we need to fear it's the Republi-lites sell-outs, who go along with K-street and the Bush administration.
They have turned their backs on their constituents.
If you vote Republican, you are going along with the destruction of this country.
Look at the polls. The American people want real Democrats who will support the American people and not Republicans, Republi-lites, or Blue Dog "centrists" who support the big business interests and their K-street corruptors.
If you want to fix anything, the first thing you need to do is demand campaign and election reform before we lose this country to the oligarchists.
Don't fall for the anti-American People propaganda.
Trust, neither party has earned my trust.
Neither party seems interested in solutions. They only are interested in getting elected. They tell the common people who is to blame for the war.
Yet they sit in congress doing absolutely NOTHING; all we hear is their rhetoric. How many democrats after the civil war began in Iraq told their constituents "we could not have foreseen the violence that is happen today".
Funny, Bosnia, Lebanon, Israel, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan how many historic examples would you like of tribal people and their vendetas. Seems the moment you get into congress you forget history, even current history.
3,350 voters are dead because neither the President or the Congress has the bravery shown by these patriots. These 3,350 voters lived up to their oaths, an oath that hasn't changed much since its inception on September 20, 1776.
It wish I could say the same of our elected officials.
I don't trust either party.
I put my trust in people who are honorable, showing courage in keeping their promises.
ACCORDING TO BUSH, AMERICA CAN NEVER HAVE A DEADLINE TO LEAVE IRAQ, WHICH LEADS AMERICA AND IRAQ WITH THE IDEA THAT THE MISSION CAN NEVER BE ACCOMPLISHED.
We should assume it is a possibility that when ever America leaves Iraq, now or in the future, terrorists may try to make it look like they are pushing America out with violence. HOWEVER, TERRORISTS DON’T GET TO DECIDE WHEN THE WAR IS OVER, AMERICA DOES!
So what, what the terrorists try to do tomorrow as opposed to what they have done yesterday?
According to one of the Democratic funding proposals that Bush had vetoed, troops would start to leave Iraq if the Iraqi Government had met their benchmarks. It is definitely being stubborn about ending the war even if the war is won.
It appears that Republican Party leadership is dead soldier set on wanting to wait until the next Democratic administration to leave Iraq so that they can blame any further chaos breaking out in Iraq on the Democratic Party in accusing them of leaving Iraq too soon! Yes, this is definitely a Bush accusation waiting to happen! I’ll take that accusation standing up in 2009, ‘DEMOCRATS HAVE LEFT IRAQ TOO SOON!’ taking a chance on reading it in breaking Iraqi news.
How is it that the Bush administration thinks they can wait out their demands of the Democratic Congress on the funding without the Democrats saying that they won’t fund the war at all? The Bush administration thinks that they can hold the well being of our soldier’s welfare, which they their selves have compromised in Iraq, over the head of the Democratic Congress. So maybe the Democratic Congress needs to rethink that one when it comes to the welfare of our soldiers in Iraq and not fund the war at all if Bush will not compromise? I mean, maybe we need to think about the fact that our soldiers are hurting anyway?
I am for telling Bush he got drunk the night before and said that the war was over but just doesn’t remember. Get the New York Times in on it and write that Karl Rove advised him to play like he meant it in a paper and show it to the president one morning...

You know? I've been wondering something. Why do the Republicans keep saying "If we quit now, we'll lose the war"?
How do we loose something we never gained?
The "war" was not winnable from the get-go.
The Bushiato knew that, and went ahead and falsified intelligence reports, and fired generals until they got their way.
But, in spite of the lying little Chickenhawk-in Chief's banty rooster strut on the aircraft carrier deck, we NEVER WON a damn thing, and are steadily losing ground, and the lives of Americans and Iraqi civilians, the respect of the world, and the infrastructure and cooperation of Iraqi citizens.
The only people who seem to have won anything are the war-profiteering "good buddies" of the Bushiato.
INVESTIGATE! IMPEACH!! INDICT!!!
Yes a majority of americans want our troops out of Iraq. It seems the leadership uses the polls to guide them. As soon as the right attacks them for not supporting the troops the tough talk goes away. Is there not one of our leaders who will stand up to them and do what the people want. A total withdrawl would leave Iraq in chaos, but a substantial reduction is needed before our military is broken. The solution semms to be in benchmarks that require the Iraqi government to fulfill these benchmarks or a responsible withdrawl in mandated. There seems to be support among republicans for this and enough votes to overide a veto. Secretary Rice said over the weekend that even benchmarks would not be acceptable as it would tie their hands. They are getting ready to go on a two month vacation and are not going to deal with these issues. It is time to put up or shut up for the Iraqi's.
