Who, Exactly, Underperformed?

Posted by Michael Link on April 17, 2007 at 02:22 PM

Who really underperformed, Alberto Gonzales or the attorneys he fired? For that, let's take a look at his own written statement for Thursday's hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Here are some excerpts I put together:

  • "I apologize"
  • "I am sorry"
  • "could have – and should have – been handled differently"
  • "I made mistakes"
  • "I would have handled this differently"
  • "I should have done more"
  • "at times I have been less than precise"
  • "I misspoke"
  • "That statement was too broad."
  • "imprecise and overbroad"
  • "I regret that"
  • "management missteps"
  • "should have been more rigorous"
  • "should have been completed in a much shorter period of time"
  • "owes them more respect than they were shown"
  • "should have worked with them"
  • "I should have communicated the concerns more effectively"
  • "I should have informed them of my decisions in a more dignified manner"
  • "could have been handled much better"
  • "I want to apologize publicly"

UPDATE: An excellent question from SandyH in the comments:

If he really feels this way, why doesn't he resign? That would be the honorable thing to do, so as not to make a mockery of all these regrets.

Great Post Mike.

Hollow apologies are not enough. He needs to be held accountable.

I hope Leahy kicks off the interview on Thursday by saying the following: Mr. Gonzolez, I am appalled that you are here wasting ours, and the nation's time today. You lied before this committee during your confirmation two years ago; you have lied to us and the American people repeatedly since then and executed your office with apparent contempt for the rule of law and the US Constitution. Perhaps you were not qualified for the job. Perhaps you're just very bad at it. Either way, shame on you for having the gall to appear here. You are a frivolous distraction from far more pressing issues... You shameful hack.

If he's as incompetent as he seems to be saying he is, why doesn't he just quit? If he won't quit, then why hasn't he been fired?
Oh! I forgot, this is the Bush administration. Incompetence is considered a virtue.

Even Tricky Dicky knew when he was between a lie and a contradiction!

Everyone in this administration seems to think that if they apologize and verbally grovel that we`ll feel sorry for them and let them stay on! Personally I think the whole country is sick to death of these incompetents and wants them out! We`ve got to make these people accountable for their actions or we`ll be marked as incompetent ourselves! As the saying goes,"who`s worse the fool that doing it or the fool who keeps letting them do it"!Do your job and be accountable! That`s what this country wants.Nobody asked these people to get into this position accept fellow cronies.

If you thought you were right and everyone else was wrong would you quit? Don't every admit to something that you did not do? There hasn't been a trial and nothing has been proven. It is he said, she said right now. Besides some of the people on that senate panel should not even be asking questions or making comments, due to them making extremely grave mistakes in the past and let off without jail time. Such as Mr Kennedy from Mass. Did he not kill a young woman in his car while drinking and driving, running around on his wife? What ever turns your crank. Bunch of Hypocrits
