All Aboard the Crooked Talk Express
McCain Dances Around Tech Issues at Tech Conference:
In general, he said, he was worried about the “unintended consequences” of government involvement. And when pressed on better broadband or phone services in other countries, he repeatedly said he thought the U.S. had the best people and the best technology in the world. He was asked a lot about the shortage of engineers in the U.S., and responded by talking about the need for immigration reform to allow more skilled foreigners to get education in this country; as well as the need for better education.
During the audience Q&A period, I asked him about increasing competition in telecom services. He answered by talking about the free market again, but then when I pressed him on spectrum allocation, he talked about how the broadcasters should be giving back more spectrum, presumably following the digital transition.
