And Then There’s That Other Guy

Fred Thompson plays a racist:

So can "Law & Order" actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) become the first presidential candidate with this credit? Thompson played a white supremacist, spewing anti-Semitic comments and fondling an autographed copy of "Mein Kampf" on a television drama 19 years ago.

His colleagues say that he was just an actor putting everything he had into playing the role of a charismatic racist, named Knox Pooley, in three episodes of CBS' hit show "Wiseguy" in 1988. "Do you call Tom Cruise a killer because he played one in a movie?" asked show creator and writer Stephen J. Cannell.

But in the age of YouTube, this performance could raise an intriguing political question: How does a performer eyeing a presidential run deal with a video history that can be downloaded, taken out of context, chopped into embarrassing pieces and then distributed endlessly though cyberspace? Some conservative political blogs are already considering the problem.

This one is dumb. The LA Times is getting hammered over this article, and if we respond in such a fashion, and I am genuinely concerned about Thompson, it could result in some serious backlash, like the backlash that Corker got over his disgusting ad against Ford. It almost cost Corker the election, and this is a stupid idea.

I dislike this man for so many reasons, HOWEVER, to somehow hold against him a role he was paid to play as an actor almost 20 yrs ago is a little much. I know that Americans are sick of partisanship and candidate bashing. I have several moderate republican friends (spouses of helicopter pilots like myself) and they are finally fed up with Bush because of the war (as we endure frequent and repeated deployments). They listen to me a great deal (suprisingly) and are much more receptive to the ideas of democrat candidate UNTIL they get a sense that there is mudslinging. (Of course I find this painfully hypocritical, but that is neither here nor there, lol). My point is if what we have to point out about a member of the opposite party is petty and really has nothing to do with his/her political positions, I think we need to not bring it up. Of course, this is just my opinion on the matter. But I REALLY want to pull some of the disenchanted military wives into the fold and I am learning that to do this, I have to say SOMETHING "nice" about at least ONE Republican candidate, I have to be fair in evaluating both parties, and I have to admit if there is something done by one of our presidential hopefuls that was not wise.

Credible polls show Fred Thompson as a serious contender if he were in the running now. Once he announces, it will be a completely different campaign. Watch out, folks, Fred's comin and he'll be giving everyone a serious run for their money!

What is THIS? Am I on the official Democratic Party website? Who's monitoring what goes up on it?
I do not support our Party using this kind of irrelevant junk. Are we paying someone to come up with stuff like this? PLEASE STICK TO THE ISSUES - and the candidates' stands on them. We can win this election fair and square if we tell the truth. We do not need to take a page from the Republican playbook and resort to dirty tricks. It has worked for them in the past, but citizens are wising up and there could very well be a major backlash to this dirty-tricks approach. I'm a lifelong Democrat and I'm mad as hell about this.

I agree with most of the comments already made. That kind of dirty trick is what *they* do; worthy of Kark Rove, who makes my flesh crawl like any other snake.
