Disenfranchisement: Day One
Posted by Michael Link on May 29, 2007 at 05:44 PM
Today I lost my right to voting representation in the United State Congress. After a year of making the daily commute from Virginia to DC, I finally moved into the city and, along the way, lost my full voting rights. So how does Day One of disenfranchisement feel? Well, let me put it this way -- I can't wait to put that "Taxation Without Representation" license plate on my car.
(DC residents are the only Americans that pay federal income taxes without full voting representation in Congress.)
Of course, I'm proud that my new congresswoman, once I register to vote in the area, is the honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton, the only member able to consistently stand toe-to-toe with Stephen Colbert and get some shots in of her own. Nevertheless, the mere "notion" that many of our citizens don't receive proper representation in Congress finally hit home.
About two weeks ago, the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs held a hearing to discuss a bill to discuss the efforts to recognize the voting rights of DC residents. The House has already passed it. Let's see if we can get this done.

Guaranteed waiting is a bush veto.Anything that represents real representation will be vetoed by him. That`s O.K. though he can only hold back the dam so long from freedom overflowing the walls they have constructed. These neo`s will regret the day they started this.Any bush or relation of should be banned from the oval office from this day forward.
virgo,
you're probably right about the veto. SO WHAT? stand up to Commander Codpiece and stand up for the residents of the District!
Good job, Michael! You rawk!!
what f$cking difference does a vote make in this country anyway? CINDY SHEEHAN HAS QUIT.
DO ANY OF YOU EVEN CARE? She never got the respect she deserved from the Democratic party. she worked her ass off to end this war. she was tireless and fearless and she has quit. I haven't considered myself a real Democrat for awhile now. at this moment, I am so far from the party I might never make it back.
CINDY SHEEHAN'S SON CASEY AND 650,000 OTHER PEOPLE HAVE DIED FOR NOTHING.
NOTHING
NOTHING
NOTHING
we all own a piece of this f$cked up war whether we like it or not.
CINDY SHEEHAN IS A PATRIOT!!
I am honored to have met her.
part of me wants to get the hell out of this violent UNCIVILIZED country but that's easier said than done. I have no choice but to stay here and fight.
HOWARD DEAN!!!! Why didn't you listen to me in 2004 when I told you to start a new progressive party? I just wrote you out a little $10.00 check which I am proceeding to tear up. the only way I will continue to support this party is if GORE IS THE NOMINEE.
I am so sad and angry right now.
I am just plain disgusted.
what is the f$cking point?
bush should be in PRISON.
Northern VA misses you, Mike...
Where do I get one of those liscence plate frames? I voted for a House and a Congress that promissed that they would do whatever it takes to represent my urgings on this fiasco and they folded. I don't feel represented at all.
