Good morning, everyone.
Bring our troops home! Secure our borders!
Enjoy the day.
One interesting point I think people are missing from the quote below, is if Bush had been president during Vietnam, he would have continued to stay the course. How hypocritical for a guy who hid from serving in Vietnam.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/04/19/AR2007041902719.html
"I want to remind you that after Vietnam, after we left, millions of people lost their life," Bush said here when an audience member asked about comparisons between Vietnam and Iraq. "The Khmer Rouge, for example, in Cambodia. And my concern is there would be a parallel. . . . The same thing would happen. There would be the slaughter of a lot of innocent life. The difference, of course, is that this time around, the enemy wouldn't just be content to stay in the Middle East; they'd follow us here."
THANK YOU DEMOCRATS!!
If only you could strip away the veil from enough Republicans to override the presidents' veto!
This administration needs to be held accountable, and the recklessnes, incompetence, and arrogance needs to be reigned in, if we are to have any hope of regaining our stading in the world!
And thank you Speaker Pelosi, for tossing Bush's OWN WORDS regarding a timetable and strategy back into his face.
Stay tough!
Bush has no authority to speak on Viet Nam.
And the 'domino theory' they try to apply to Iraq is just as flawed as it was in regards to Viet Nam.
Wow...trolls up so early?
I'm not the one ordering soldiers to their deaths without a competent plan...and using an event in history that I avoided with every means possible...and didn't even bother to stay sober and lucid to learn from it.
Morning all,
Granddaughter babysitting today, so will be in and out.
Nice to see the trolls miss me. Who better to direct their hatred and anger and sour grapes to than someone posting information on how this Administration and the other corrupt Republicans have almost destroyed this country? and actions on how to get rid of them?
Will talk later, in the meantime, keep up the good fight.
they'd follow us here."

Spread the fear!!
Come on Democratic Party! How are you going to show some new ideas in controlling the war against terrorism if you take control of the White House in 2009?
First off, I want to ask all of you American’s if the Middle East has ‘earned’ America’s respect to even deserve our belittled President trying to help the region whether he is successful at it or not? After all, America, the devil in the terrorists perception, doesn’t make terrorists and insurgents murder our soldiers and President Bush doesn’t make them do it either! The Democratic Party better be careful with the inference that President Bush is just ‘letting’ our soldiers get killed by staying in Iraq. I mean, I want to hear the Democratic Party stand up for America at the same time the party is asking President Bush to stand back from Iraq...we still have our soldiers honor and a country to defend even if we do leave.
The truth is, I think it might be somewhat in the Iraqi international political interest to keep America in Iraq as a scapegoat for anger and frustration towards the Shia political parties dominating Iraq... So I appreciate the Democratic Party giving the Iraqi government benchmarks to achieve in the Iraq war funding bill before we leave, because that shows the party cares and will hold Iraq accountable for their own destiny.
Do most people in America understand that these people in the Middle East view their sects as political parties in the region and they also have different political parties within their sects competing for national control? I am afraid not of terrorists, I am afraid that maybe the Middle East does not have a good enough Islamic representation or Democratic international representation of their culture in order for the world to appreciate where the region comes from to help? When people like the President of the United States and the Pope do not understand Islamic culture, you better believe there is a lack of representation somehow. I mean, do people realize that the sects are never going to fully unite in a Central Government, like the President thinks, anymore than Republicans and Democrats are ever going to fully unite?
If, for the necessity of peace, the Shia sect in Iraq would discount a fraction of an adjusted total vote count, Iraqi’s could vote for three presidential lists of candidates from each sects regional winning political party. However, the Sunni and the Kurdish might have to find a way to make this in the Shia sect’s interest to go along with this election process somehow...and that way is not going to be found by being violent towards the Shia or being violent towards anyone.
The Iraqi’s could vote for three political parties, one from each sect. Their first choice vote could count one whole, their second, one half or so, and their third, one fourth or so. Then all their three votes could be counted up, if the Shia sect would agree to give up a fraction of their total vote count. However much of a fraction it would take to allow a chance for other sects political parties to win elections by allowing more numbers of votes but still allow a chance for the dominating Shia political party population to win.
Requiring Iraqi Citizens to vote for three candidates lists from their favorite to least favorite sects political party would encourage the people to understand and tolerate other sects political parties view points, promoting peace. It also gives each political party equal public and equal federal governmental representation nationally and regionally, which might half-please other countries in the region and give the region an example it can build on.
I am happy, that if nothing else, the Iraq war has opened up the door to a better understanding and appreciation of Middle Eastern culture, let us all, including the Middle East, be sure to try to build on that.
Thank you very much.
The dems need to take note of the way the cons work the propaganda machine. Most people only hear headlines. Here's one "How could a republican congress and president miscalculate the defense budget by 100 billion dollars they NEED half way through the fiscal year?" The budget was approved last Oct. Keep it simple and spell these things out so most people in this country understand it.
Another thing, next time your boss gives you a deadline to get a job done, follow the presidents lead and say there shouldn't be a deadline.

I agree 100%. this Framing by the Republicans has been one of my hot buttons for years now.
In Pre-WWII, boston Retailer Edward Filen organized the Institue for Propoganda Analysis to educate the gullible public on the ways of Spin.
The Institute made a list of the ways the public can be duped including glittering generalities (phrases like War on Terror), Name calling (calling any dissenters, Terrorists or Traitors).
That is why when we have Trolls come in here, quoting all the Republican's frames, it shocks me that these people REMAIN duped, despite all the evidence to the contrary ! There is no war on Terrorism in Iraq! This country, under Hussein had NO terrorists before Bush went in there. And a million other examples which have come to light still have not budged these easily swayed, naive individuals. (or else their egos will not permit them to admit they made a mistake, just like George Bush refuses)
{{{Pam}}}
I have no idea what they're teaching kids in schools these days -- if anything. When I came through in the 60's and early 70's, we got a goodly dose of "beware the claim" education; how to analyze, think for ourselves and come to our own conclusions.
Even things as simple and everyday like a detergent that says it's 33% better. "Than friggin' WHAT?" should be the first logical question.
To wit: I bought a bag of chips the other day, boldly (no pun LOL) emblazoned with "25% MORE CHIPS!" -- but the large red print neglected to point out a 25% hike in price to cover the difference.
As much as the wingnuts holler about English being the official language, I haven't heard but one or two native-born wingnuts who could construct a complete, grammatically-correct sentence complete with correct spelling. A product of a Republican-raped education system; more's the pity and the sort of crime against humanity the Republicans repeatedly commit.
As an aside (and a "here's yet another example"): this morning I heard a doctor from one of the big local hospitals going on and on about a wonderful, new medical technique. In less than 20 seconds, the man made five egregious grammatical errors. (For the slow at 'rifmetick, that's approximately one error every four seconds.)
Betcherass I wouldn't allow him to treat so much as a paper cut on me. If he can't handle English (mind you, this is a white guy born and raised in the Triad), then I doubt that he understood his medical texts very well.
But for some reason, most Americans (well, all people who vote Republican) seem to be satisfied with third-rate, so long as they feel smugly self-gratified first and foremost. This attitude, by the way, I find extremely unChristian, yet for a picture of it, look to any "christian" wingnut (Dobson, Fallwell, Haggard, Parsley and all their glassy-eyed cult-followers). And they all vote Republican. Need I say more?
It blows me away that most folks won't think past the big, bright letters on the cover... nary more than scant attention to their own immediate gratification. No wonder there are still poor folks who vote Republican, against all evidence that it's the very, very worst and the most self-destructive choice.
Destroy the education system (as the pugs have almost successfully completed) and critical thought goes right down the rat-hole with it. Stupid people are easier to steal from; the neoKKKons know it and have worked it to a fare-thee-well. At the moment, I have little hope of rescuing our nation from the fat, lazy, self-obsessed who only worry about whether a couple of guys in some other city are going to get married, or that the Ten Commandments aren't in some freako judge's courtroom. (Assholes, there are 614 Commandments; go back and study the Bible before you go trying to throw picked-and-chosen verses at me!)
I still believe that repairing our education system should be at the top of the list of things to do after the 2008 election, right after stopping this farce of an unwarranted and illegal aggression in the Middle East. If people are educated, they have hope of better employment because they're capable of critical thought and self-motivation. With better employment, we've a hope of ending poverty. End poverty and crime wipes itself out. History has shown this example over and over and over and over and ... you get it.
It blows me away that most folks won't think past the big, bright letters on the cover... nary more than scant attention to their own immediate gratification. No wonder there are still poor folks who vote Republican, against all evidence that it's the very, very worst and the most self-destructive choice.

This is proof that the Republicans in those Institutes and on the radio airwaves, have learned how to use language that gets the attention of this group of gullibles. Use the Bible to say Gay Marriage is bad, and these sheeple put aside their low level incomes, working conditions, civil rights, retirement future, health care, etc and are blinded by these people who made themselves experts on Propoganda! We must learn to un-do what they have wrought.
Hate radio must be defeated. These institutes which produce the Tucker Carlsons and Ann coulters and other Right Wing Extremists must be exposed for what they are.
Last Novembers elections showed we must be doing something right, or else the Public is finally just waking up. I pray this is true.
30% to go though ! Those who still refuse to admit the truth.
I do not understand why the Congressional Democrats are being chided to 'weigh difficult concessions" with poll results like this:
Was President Bush right to veto a war-spending bill that contained a deadline for the pullout of U.S. troops from Iraq?
Yes 37%

No 63%

hey pam you and i seem to be the evil demons for the trolls. sounds good to me.
hello day shift
just a quick report from the field. the hot topic in the break room was the homosexual from new jersey who was outed.
yep, it's a republic workplace.
i won't dignify the conversation with their hateful, homophobic insanity. i will point out, however, that these are the people that still cling to the talking points.
they thought of it as a victory.
i am saddened by this beyond words. last night, i though Malloy would have a stroke, as he blamed democrats on the intelligence committee for not coming clean to the public with the lies told to the people in the run-up to war.
i was left with the grim reality that it is, truly, we the people who share the blame. our responsibility as citizens has been relegated to the bottom of the list of priorities.
bill, your comments about the educational system are spot on, as usual. critical thinking is out. innumeracy is in. science is just a theory.
you guys give me hope.
kristen, thanks for the horsey.

mc,
Thanks for sharing The Decider’s hollow words. He fails to mention that nobody in Iraq wanted to be invaded by foreigners...nobody. It goes against logic.
Through Bush's irresponsible actions in hastily invading a country that did nothing to provoke him, he is the murderer of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis...a barbarian. The world knows it.
Now he wants us to believe he's a humanitarian? Worrying about saving lives? Please, Mr. President, save us your concern for the Iraq people. Nobody believes you.
The Iraqis want us to leave. We have no right to stay. It's way past time to get out and stay out. If Bush and the Republicans want any more money to keep this fiasco going, they can take it out of their faith-based initiative budget.
All those who continue to enable this doorknob are just as responsible for the continuing suffering and slaughter. Let the supplemental bill die.

read you later. thank you for ignoring the trolls
Bush is concerned about Iraqis now, after we ignited a firestorm of hatred and reprisal, opened doors for terrorists to attack our vulnerable troops, destroyed infrastructure and stability in a country ripe for the looting, kidnappings and murders which naturally followed regime collapse? Were we responsible for the killings in Cambodia because we left VietNam? Should we have stayed to protect Cambodians and widened the conflict, resulting in an endless run of American casualties? I don't recall an American invasion or occupation of Cambodia, but there was plenty of regional unrest when we left, which is has every potential to occur in the middle east. Really, Bush is concerned about his legacy, which is cemented to the outcome in Iraq, and Republicans in general have their own selfish interests to protect; neither have the interests of the American public on their agendas.
Also, how long does it take to hire and train Iraq troops anyway? Thousands of young Americans have entered the military out of high school and college, been trained and carried out two and three twelve month missions to that war in the last four plus years! And we aren't fighting to protect our country, our turf, and our families!!
The Democratic Party better be careful with the inference that President Bush is just ‘letting’ our soldiers get killed by staying in Iraq
how else can you explain the rush to war, the firing of all the generals who said it wouldn't work, the firing or reassigning of the generals who say its not working now and the continued stubborness about "stay the course". any military person knows you don't assault a hill 50 times with the exact same result and keep assaulting it. you make a new plan even if its to assault the same hill. throwing 10 more guys into the same plan is not a new plan.
30% to go though ! Those who still refuse to admit the truth.

Those 30%-ers, like the trolls, believe that there will be something in it for them "when they take over". Fools.
Again, throughout history, the enablers are the first to be eliminated because they're known troublemakers and malcontents. The same will go for the wackogeezicals and hate-mongers. If they think that the fabulously wealthy theocrats are suddenly going to up-and magnanimously break off anything to their henchmen for doing their dirty-work, they're more delusional than ought to be loose and walking around.
WASHINGTON -President Bush showed little appetite for compromise Wednesday, hours ahead of a session with congressional leaders aimed at crafting a new bill to fund the war in Iraq.
everywhere i hear the dems are about to crack/fold/make consessions to mr pres. when we were the minority, we cracked. that is why the supreme court looks the way it does. now we are the majority, will we crack again? my frustration with congress is almost worse now that when the repubs were in charge. the pres nominates people for senate confirmed jobs, withdraws the nominations and then appoints them in the dead of night and it seems as though nothing is happening. i voted in november not because of the war, but because i felt the constitution needed to be repaired. the congress and the whitehouse formed one branch of government and bush was quickly gaining power over the third.
I love it! but...where will the counties get the money to pay for the postage???
Rep. Susan Davis introduces bill requiring postage-paid absentee ballots
Rep. Susan Davis (D-Calif.) will introduce a bill this week to make absentee ballots postage-free for voters.
If you do, then by all means listen. Why must you try to silence something that you disagree with? Is it because a lot of Americans CHOOSE to listen to conservative radio? Is it because conservative radio might be right in a lot of the things they say
There is a line between freedom of speech, and spreading Hatred, slant, racism, bigotry, homophobia, to those who do not know any better! As I have been talking about in the rest of my posts if you had bothered to read them, is the Right wing learned that there is a lot of gullible of people out there, who will believe anything told to them, if told in the right frames. This group is led by lies and distortions. THIS is what must stop.
and your name tells me all I need to know about a weirdo like you! If you don't like Al Sharpton, turn him off! Isn't that what you just told me, hypocrit????
You are right, of course, Bill. I'm not losing any ice cream today ! :)
"Along with the chaos, there are some good things happening in Iraq, too."
...according to a report just now from CNN.
Since when is "chaos" considered an acceptable state of affairs in any culture? Why has the MSM lowered the standards of civilization to the Neanderthal level?
This is progress? I doubt the Iraqis would think so. But in Bush World that apparently is now the norm, and the corporate media is happily spinning it to Americans.
Excuse me. But I don't think so. None of us will accept Katrina conditions or what happened to New York on 9/11. We know we deserve better...and so do the Iraqi people.
This sort of propaganda just infuriates the American public, but the Republicans continue to dole it out. Are they truly that stupid? We expect our government to do better than the Neanderthal...but that’s all they can do.
If the GOP keeps it up, it will get just what it deserve next November...extinction.
Bombings, Shootings Kill 10 In Iraq
Bombings and shootings killed 10 people Wednesday, including three Sunni brothers who were shot to death in Baghdad.

JERUSALEM (AP) - In extraordinarily strong language, a high-level investigative panel sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday for "severe failure" in his handling of the war in Lebanon - a potentially fatal blow to his political survival.
Whether Olmert can hang on to his job will depend on how the Israeli people respond to the panel's report, which blamed him for "hastily" rushing into a war the army was not prepared to wage - and that many Israelis think emboldened the Jewish state's enemies.
An expressionless Olmert stared straight ahead and slumped against the back of his chair as the panel's chairman read the report, which cited "a severe failure in the lack of judgment, responsibility and caution."
However, Olmert vowed to remain in office despite calls for his resignation from coalition partners as well as opponents. He also promised that failures "will be remedied."...
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070430/D8OR4TU80.html
As all the regulars know, I am a staunch supporter of Israel and most of their policies. I supported PM Olmert in his decision to attack the terrorist groups of Hamas and Hezbollah in response to the kidnapped Israeli soldiers last year. This report proves that I was wrong in that support. To those who debated this issue with me, I concede; and I apologize to anyone whom I may have offended. The Israeli system of government worked in as much as their checks and balances generated a clear and concise investigation that clearly shows this was an overreaction on the part of PM Olmert as well as being mismanaged. Hmmm, that sounds familiar.
This does not mean that I subscribe to some of our more pro-Palestinian, Hamas, and/or Hezbollah member's views. I still believe that Hamas and Hezbollah are the antithesis to everything decent and noble about Middle Eastern civilization. I fully support Israel and their right to defend their citizens as they see fit in accordance with international law but, in this case, I was wrong.
If it were not so blatantly political itself, it would be amusing to listen to the Republicans trot out the tired old accusation that our opposition to the war to merely a political ploy. They actually seem to believe that Democrats would stoop so low as to "lose the war" simply to score big in the next election. They are so involved with political chicanery themselves, they have lost sight of the fact that others may act altruistically. They don't get it.
Of course, if we now desert our moral position by compromising with the president on timelines and benchmarks, then they can sell their story more effectively, but if we have the courage of our convictions, they won't be able to sell it at all. We have to stand firm against this loose-cannon president. The war against Iraq is wrong. It was begun with lies and has been perpetuated with deceptions. It impoverishes all who come into contact with it, morally, spiritually and economically.

tylin,
There once was a time in this country when nobody questioned another's patriotism. The only time I this sort of crap springs up is when an unjust act has been made and some citizens need to cover their tracks.
I'm certain the founding fathers said as much, but I'm sick of looking up such quotations and having Republicans ignore.
Thanks for saying it so well in your own words.
Emergency Veto Rally
Congress recently passed a bill setting a deadline to end the war in Iraq. But President Bush decided to veto -- ignoring the will of the American people. Moveon members are gathering at emergency response rallies across the country. We'll bring noise-makers to show that the Bush administration cannot ignore the voices of the people. This is an important moment to step out and show our strength in numbers -- we have to swiftly prove that the majority of the people aren't with the president. We want Congress to stand firm and end this war. Emergency Veto Rally, or sign up for an event near you. Click on link below for details:
Statement Of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on the President's Veto of the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Bill
I thought this fitting with some of today's topics. (hi mary!)
Thomas Jefferson touched on the matter of informing the people at-large;
"...if we think them not enlightened

not to take it from them, but to inform
their discretion."

Bob,
I'm really interested in seeing how Israel with its parliamentary system of democracy handles such a crisis in confidence. It's obvious that we have a major problem here in the United States. The will of the majority is not being followed.
If Israel can successfully handle their political crisis and restore confidence among the electorate, it might be time for us to re-examine our current system and make some adjustments in the Constitution.
I've never liked how politicians pushed through an amendment to the Constitution which allowed the two major political parties to control the vice presidency and push out a viable third party candidate for that office.
Posted by HillWilliam on May 2, 2007 at 11:51 AM
Bill,
You don't have to be educated to use your common sense. Most people know when something is wrong and seek to fix it. I think the will to survive has kicked in with most Americans now.
They feel very venerable at this point. They sense that those in charge are in way over their heads and can't be trusted to work in our country's best interests. That's why all the typical GOP propaganda isn't working any longer. They can frame it any way they want, but it’s now hitting on deaf ears.
No one cares any longer what Bush or the Republicans say.
Bin Lauden really knew when to strike, didn’t he? He saw the true weakness in our society and the man who would carry it to its worst consequences. Americans tend to be way too trusting of our leaders and their respect of the Constitutional.
I'm sure a good dose of skeptism will serve us well in the future.
Posted by SandyH on May 2, 2007 at 03:25 PM
I too would like to see more third party candidates especially on a national level. I believe that both sides, especially the Republicans, have become spoiled in their duopoly.
Posted by BobVADemHawk on May 2, 2007 at 03:00 PM
There are two sides to every debate and I appreciate you concilliatory post with regard to Olhmert. I know I have landed in your face a couple of times.
However, don't confuse empathy for either side as support. I don't think you would find much support for any act of aggression on this blog. But as we have said here before, Israels reaction was like setting fire to a human who was found guilt of smoking a cigarette in public.
As we have seen with crystal clarity,in Iraq, an inferior military or militia will use whatever tools deemed necessary to defend themselves.
There are no issues with the defense of a soverign border and every country has that right. But, to invade and occupy another country and call it self defense??
Many issues.
A message that I just sent off to Speaker Pelosi via The Gavel (blog was down so I couldn't post):
Dear Madam Speaker:
I was so mad this afternoon hearing the "debate" to over ride Mr. Bush's veto that I had to turn the TV off.
I honestly despise your Republican counterparts in the House for still trying to tie in the 9/11 disaster, and the "we're fighting them over there..." rhetoric.
The first issue I have with there reasoning is the fact that we left bin Laden, and henceforth the war on terror, to destroy Iraq. The second opposition I have with the Republicans logic is that if they are so afraid of having to fight the terrorist' over here then, we should not be exuding all of precious resources over there. Wouldn't it make more sense to secure our borders to PREVENT the terrorist the opportunity to strike at us over here?
Mr. Bush and the Republicans cannot have it both ways. The more resources we expend in Iraq, the fewer resources we have left to secure our country and protect our citizens. Don't think the terrorists do not understand this fact, and that was my main reasoning for opposing this expedition (hunting trip?) from 12 September 2001.
In reality, we need to fight them over by securing our borders and our infrastructure. Expending so much of our precious resources, in the battle "over there", is stopping us from winning the real war over here.
Sincerely yours,
;-)
All have a good day!

I have argued with you, but not because I hate Israel . I hate Aggression from the strong against the weak. Whether it be Israel or our own USA.
OH, and the thought of the extinction of the Republican Party makes me more than warm and fuzzy, it makes me ecstatic! LOL!
A story in The New York Times makes it clear White House officials are giving off-the-record interviews designed to dampen expectations regarding Iraq. These officials are saying that the administration will make no interim reports on the situation until September, and that in any event people shouldn't expect much in the way of military or political progress by then.
This is a welcome dose of realism after months of optimistic statements from the Bush administration, claiming we would know by the end of the summer if the latest troop escalation was "working." As Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of the American military in Iraq has emphasized, the kind of counterinsurgency campaign his troops are now fighting takes years to "work" in any meaningful sense, assuming it ever does.
Of course the purpose of this ratcheting down of expectations is to try to forestall the political firestorm over Iraq that gets closer with every passing month. That effort is almost certainly doomed to fail: Six months from now things in Iraq are likely to look very much as they do now.

"Lose the war"
This language drives me nuts. You can't lose something that doesn't exist. That is probably the most critical element in the debate about Iraq.
We are not fighting a war. We invaded a country, disposed of a dictator and overthrew an existing government. When that happens, like in the Phillipines or Haiti, they didn't call it a war, they called it what it is. An occupation by an armed force or militia.
It perplexes me why this is allowed to continue. WE are funding and pouring billions of dollars down the shit chute for an occupation and that money and loss of life is never coming back.
This administration has been and continues to be allowed to frame the debate with the use of language. Until that stops, we will continue with a pissing match.
There is no loss or victory in an occupation. You are either occupying or you are not. It is either a satellite state dependant on us or it is not.
Call it what it is and do not allow anyone to call it anything other than it is.
Occuf***inpation.
Just another failure of this administration. PLEASE let's get a Democrat in office and fight this war correctly !
The progressive return of the Taliban in Afghanistan with increasingly vigorous offensives each spring, notably in 2006, and now with a strong and destabilizing Taliban presence in over half of Pashtun country, is an alarm signal for the Afghan government and the NATO military coalition led by the United States. Southern Afghanistan has once again become a battle theater, and Western countries engaged on the ground are beginning to express - not unlike certain French diplomats and politicians - serious doubts about the chances for victory.
The Pashtun "students of religion," nourished on the milk of Pakistan's secret services and madrassas, supported by the jihadist al-Qaeda movement, are gaining ground in the country and in the minds of Afghans. This rise in power - five and a half years after the fall of the Taliban Islamic Emirate - is a major failure for NATO.
afternoon all,
We finally had a good soaking rain last night. There was some lightning and thunder along the Rio Grande twenty miles west of us. Today dawned cloudy, then the sun came out. It's now about 2:30 PM and the clouds are forming again. This rain is really welcome here in the desert.
david,
I too think they are totally off base. Nancy was saying today that we must get out of Iraq and use our resources in Afghanistan and elsewhere to combat al-qaeda.
I feel strongly, and have for some time that we need to watch Pakistan. bin laden may be in Pakistan and al-qaeda is gaining ground there. It is just a matter of time that they take over Pakistan. Pakistan has atomic weapons and an air force. The war will come to us. All this crap about they will follow us home is correct because bush and the other moron repigs are fighting the wrong war.

Of course it's doomed to fail. What would happen if we invaded and occupied Canada. Do you think we'd be up to our armpits in angry La Batz drinkers wanting to chop us up with hockey sticks?
How about Mexico? Lets go invade Ensenada. (ooops we have) Well anyways, you get my point. They would be pretty pissed and 56% of the illegal immigrants would return back across the border and attack our troop with Cuervo bottles full of Premux gas.
Probably shouldn't have given that last example because cheesebrain might think it's an effective immigration policy.
There will not come a point in Iraq where any Iraqi still able to walk will not resist an occupation by us or anyone else. They might be tempted to lay low for a minute, but the second theres a gap, you can bet that there will be action.
Want civil obediance in Iraqi then scorched earth is the only policy.
Got the stomach for that?
Great Britain went for something like 28 years and left.
With Patreus in charge maybe we can make it 29.
Senator Feingold has posted his blog about the veto at the Huffington Post. Senator Feingold who has opposed the illegal Iraq War from the start also was the only Senator to vote against The Patriot Act. This is one Senator who is not afraid to speak his mind and he's been totally correct about opposing the war and the Patriot Act. You watch Sen. Feingold speak on the Senate floor, read his blogs and watch his television interviews and you see a man with integrity, intelligence and true moral compassion, in other words a leader. Senator Feingold speaks truth to power unlike my "senators" both of which voted for the Torture Immunity Bill, which of course the Honorable Senator Feingold opposed. Keep it up Senator we need you. peace
afternoon Pam,
Is one of chimp' illiterate cronys running NATO?
If so, it is obvious that they would fail.
I think I heard this correctly. On CNN news this morning they said that darth's approval rating is now 9%.

They have a pretty good cricket team too!! So you think they are going to fly nukes over on the F-16's that we sold them? They have about 40 of them and I would think that we have a pretty good lock on when they fly and when they don't.
That part of the world I'm afraid is gone. the Russians couldn't do it and I doubt that even with a superior force, that we could do any better.
The only solution is one that is based on an International committment combined with isolation and economic sanctions.
Any military action only enhances the recruitment and support that Al Queda or any militant group needs.
We've seen what blowing people up does. It don't work. Time for a new strategy. Hmmm....maybe diplomacy.
Tell George Bush he can't veto the truth. Call: 202-456-1111
Americans United for Change released this ad in response to President Bush's veto of historic legislation to wind down the war in Iraq.

I have news for them, so have we. bush has appointed himself dictator and has taken away our democracy. Now we are a fascist pig nation. The f'ing repigs love it.
U.S. overlooked "worrisome" Russia: Biden
afternoon gnois,
You are absolutely correct. We need a president that will practise diplomacy and not rattle nukes.
There must be a defect in the brains of these repig warmongers. They are schoolyard bullies. They need to grow up.
So Today, Bush backtracked on his idea of what sucess in Iraq will be! IN FACT, he took the same line that Kerry did 2 years ago, when they all made fun of him!!!!
"But today in his remarks on Iraq, President Bush — without saying so explicitly — embraced Kerry’s definition of success against terrorism. “Success is a level of violence where the people feel comfortable about living their daily lives.” Watch it:

PamB @5:23PM,
I saw that. I wondered why Mr Bush scoffed and/or laughed when he said, "Either we'll succeed [cough, sneeze, or laugh?]." I don't know, but I guess the arrogance is getting to me.
well, a little good news. NOT THAT BUSH HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT!
But it still does not make me want to go switch all my investments into Stocks, not the way it has been like a roller coaster.
"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Dow rallied to yet another record high Wednesday, capping its longest winning stretch in nearly 52 years, on robust earnings news, a $10.6 billion deal for Cablevision and a strong reading from the manufacturing sector.
The Dow Jones industrial average (up 75.74 to 13,211.88, Charts) rose nearly 0.6 percent to close at an all-time high for the fifth time in the last six sessions. The Dow also hit an intraday high of 13,256.33 during the session.

DEFEND AMERICA---fire the republicans!
Good evening, everyone.
Sorry that I've been dropping in and out without comment today. It's been one of those days at the "home" office.
The latest remarks by Bush re-defining what victory in Iraq would encompass are a gem. He now thinks that we have to accept "a degree of violence"...just like we do in this country. Excuse me?
Tell that to the families of those killed a Virginia Tech. I don't believe Bush mentioned that in his remarks at the memorial....people just have to accept a certain degree of violence?
What is wrong with this doorknob?
Is this Bush's way of giving street gangs thumbs up to police, fire, and EMTs since he took office...even after 9/11 and Katrina?
The truth is coming out. Bush doesn't intend to do anything about Iraq or the problems in this country. He thinks we can live with things the way they are.
It doesn’t bother him...he lives in a bubble guarded by the Secret Service and protected by the rest of the Republican Party.

Pam,
It's good for those that manipulate money not for those that earn it and have no money left after meeting expenses to speculate.
What happens on the market has so little to do with the daily lives of most of us, except for our retirement savings if we are lucky to have any.
It's got to the point that I don't even think about the Dow unless there is another "correction" that my portfolio won't recover from for years...until the next one comes along.

Nancy gets Condi off her fat Rear end! Hypocrits!
"As I recall, when the Speaker of the House chatted with Syrian officials last month, the White House, congressional Republicans, and far-right activists were apoplectic. CNN ran a news segment on Pelosi’s trip titled “Talking to Terrorists.”
The ringleader of this spectacularly stupid smear was the Bush White House. Somehow I suspect Rove & Co. will be a little quieter now.
Just to be clear, I’m not criticizing Rice for possibly having discussions with Syria’s Foreign Minister; I’m just stunned by the hypocrisy of it all.
Literally just one month ago, the Bush administration said U.S. officials should not have contact with the Syrian government, accusing the Syrians of meddling in Lebanon, supporting terrorism, and being unhelpful on Iraq. White House spokesperson Dana Perino said it sends the wrong “message” for members of Congress to discuss anything with Syrian officials.
For a lot of conservatives, that’s all they needed to hear. Indeed, far-right blogs pounced — one said this is proof that “Democrats seem to be setting up a separate government with its own suicidally blind idea of who’s a terrorist and who isn’t (basically, nobody is).” Another insisted that Pelosi’s decision to visit with Syrians is “repulsive” and questioned her loyalty to the U.S. Another still asked, “Can we question [Democrats’] patriotism now?” Yet another concluded that Pelosi’s talks “teeter on the edge of treason.”
Dick Cheney called Pelosi’s discussions “bad behavior.” The president personally criticized talks with Syria, saying discussions have been “counterproductive” and concluding that they send “mixed signals” to the Middle East. For two weeks, Fox News talked about almost nothing else.
And now, lo and behold, Bush’s Secretary of State seems to believe talking with high-ranking Syrian officials may not be such a bad idea after all. Will CNN run features about Rice “talking to terrorists”? Somehow, I doubt it.

Just add it to the Iraqi surge supplemental? Ask Bill Gates to fund it? Ask Hugo Chevez to donate the money? Take it from the Katrina aid offers from other countries that were never spent to get New Orleans back on its feet?
The U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer, Wired News has learned. The directive, issued April 19, is the sharpest restriction on troops' online activities since the start of the Iraq war. And it could mean the end of military blogs, observers say.
Military officials have been wrestling for years with how to handle troops who publish blogs. Officers have weighed the need for wartime discretion against the opportunities for the public to personally connect with some of the most effective advocates for the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq -- the troops themselves. The secret-keepers have generally won the argument, and the once-permissive atmosphere has slowly grown more tightly regulated. Soldier-bloggers have dropped offline as a result.
The new rules (.pdf) obtained by Wired News require a commander be consulted before every blog update.

ROOTS ACTION ALERT: No Cover For the Bush Rubber Stampers
By: Jane Hamsher
Steny Hoyer has openly dismissed Jack Murtha's "short leash" post-veto proposal and is now cheering with Republicans for benchmarks to hold the Iraqi government accountable (PDF). Is Hoyer smoking Blunts? Why else would he be agreeing with the Republican Minority Whip, rather than the majority of the American people who oppose this war and George Bush's handling of it? "Benchmarks" is Capital Hill speak for "no accountability and more war."
Democrats should be asking Steny Hoyer what he thinks they were elected to do in November. Call your representatives. Tell them to Just Say No to Steny Hoyer and his capitulation to George Bush.
The war is wrong and it is failing and the longer it takes Congress to hold the President accountable, the more people will die.
(Update: This is very time critical. Decisions are being made right now. If you can, please stop what you're doing to make those calls. Thanks! — Pach)
Pam,
Sitting at 9% approval rating, Cheney is the definition of "bad behavior" to most Americans.
Now the administration is saying that al-Mawki is running a "shadow" Shiite government. What's the surprise? He ran as an Islamic theocracy candidate.
I suppose none of the Republicans knew what that meant. This from the same people who didn't see the insurgency coming? Is it any wonder they didn't see the theocracy coming, too?
This GOP "lowering of standards" talk on CNN is surprising as well. Don't they realize they are speaking blasphemy? There will be repercussions...that is, if the Republicans ever figure out they are being insulted. But then, lowering standards is considered a virtue in the GOP.
Rove has been so busy spinning the DOJ scandal and Bush’s veto that he hasn't had time to monitor his media serfs. They are showing a glaring disloyalty to the King and his court jesters. Someone isn't doing his job...just like the rest of the Regency U grads and their GOP cabinet mentors.
Hop to it, Rove. Crack that whip and make the media do your tricks….which the American people now either laugh at or ignore entirely.

DPD,
Did you realize that they partially dismantaled Reagan's Air Force One and drug it into the building to use as a prop for the debate?. The guy that runs the library was talking about it to Tweety this afternoon.
I wonder how much that is costing tax payers?
They must be using the same PR firm that advised the White House to put up a "Mission Accomplished" banner and keep an aircraft carrier tied up for hours so Spunky could do his thing.
Price is no expense with the GOP when they are setting the stage to lie throught their teeth?
Thanks for posting that Steny Hoyer article, {{fade}}
I just finished reading it and thought it should be posted.

No WONDER Nancy Pelosi did not want this weak little man in office. Democrats are never going back to where they were for the last 12 years. Guys like this would take us there.
So, the Pubies are setting up their "debate" in the hangar of the Ronnie "LIE"-brary, and the camera angles will feature a jet (AF1, BTW) and prominently display the image of a JET and the words painted on it... UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Hmmmm, no stage craft working here, right?
Also, the Pugs are scheduling it in order to show "Purple Mountains Magesty...AND Fruited Plains"!!!!
And let's not forget the sun setting over the WEST as an image. As if the Puggies are the only ones who can stop the decline of Western "Civilization" as they know it.
I hope there's an Earthquake, and we will see just how fast FEMA reacts when a bunch of Pugs are inconvenienced.
The Culture of Corruption lives on!!
Madam Speaker, the list of Republicans under investigation or resigning in this administration in disgrace keeps growing. This morning The Washington Post reported, Julie MacDonald, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior Department, resigned just as she was being investigated for changing scientific reports to protect the interests of oil and gas companies and real estate developers, all the people she was supposed to be actually holding accountable. I wish this was an isolated case in the Bush Administration. This morning the New York Times reported the Department of Commerce Inspector General faces three separate investigations into the conduct of his office. Scott Bloch, the Special Counsel at the Justice Department, is being investigated for the management of his office. Lurita Doan at the GSA being investigated for the politicization of the offices. Monica Goodling at the Justice Department resigned. Sue Ellen Wooldridge at Justice stepped down. Matteo Fontana, at the Department of Education, has to step aside. David Safavian, OMB, has been prosecuted. Steve Griles at the Interior Department had to step down. All have had their conduct scrutinized while in a professional office. It is time, for in fact it justifies why, this Congress is doing its job of oversight and accountability and bringing people’s professional conduct in order.
did nobody notice?

Here's a FUN ACTION item, if you have a couple bucks. Even if you split a $20. bill up between them, it will add up.
From John Kerry:
"So, we're announcing a new kind of activism campaign, one not easily done without the new progressive infrastructure provided by our friends and partners at ActBlue. It's a combined fundraising/email campaign, where you can already contribute to the defeat of some key Republicans, and then let them know what you are doing and why. When you speak in the language of grassroots pressure, I assure you they will hear what you say.
We're targeting four Senators with this at first. The first three I'll mention are already top races for 2006. Those are Senators Coleman, Sununu, and Collins, all from states that voted for me in 2004 and want change in Iraq today. But our fourth might be the most important of all: Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The other three are great targets, but going after McConnell is getting to the heart of the matter. McConnell has been a bulwark of the GOP leadership and if we can distract, or even defeat him, with a tough electoral challenge in 2008, we'll send a clear message that - just as Jim Webb defeated the supposedly undefeatable George Allen -- no Senator is safe if they defend a broken policy rather than stand for change.
So go to this page we set up with ActBlue and contribute to ActBlue's Democratic Nominee fund in those four states. Then--and this might be the most important part--follow the link to a page we set up where you can type in a message to be delivered to each Senator you contributed against with a subject line designed to get their attention: "I just contributed against you."

fade,
I say let Steny have his benchmarks...just as long as we get to tack on Universal Health Care and dismantle the tax cuts for the wealthy.
Any compromise with these corrupt rubber stampers must come at a huge political cost to the Republicans and be something the American people want very badly.
Or we can just leave the first offer on the table and watch the Republicans sweat while we toy with them all summer negotiating with the White House. I'd love to see Steny and the rest of the Congressional Republicans hung out to dry. They really are no longer part of the equation.
And after all, what's the hurry? The President now says there is an acceptable amount of violence in Iraq. So these surge troops don't really need to be in Baghdad after all, right? Any troops who have already been sent should be re-deploy to Afganistan where the are really needed.
I don't care what Steny thinks, because it's the President's decision to de-fund his own surge. Let him dig his way out of the hole he's put himself into.
thanks {{{Pam}}}
you beat me to the keyboard on the Kerry action. brilliant!
i'm so tired of hearing about the media pundits i could cry. i want to feel empowered again, intelligent...
this will do it. great strategic move.
what a breath of fresh air from calls for impeachment. i would love to see it, but we have to be intelligent about the votes. we don't have them.

They will send in The Terminator to save the world?
"As round two of the Iraq funding debate begins, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has launched a closely coordinated strategy aimed at capitalizing on apparent divisions between rank-and-file Republicans and the White House over benchmarks for the war.
As expected, President Bush vetoed the $124 billion supplemental spending bill Tuesday evening, saying the measure was "a prescription for chaos and confusion and we must not impose it on our troops."
In response, according to Senate leadership aides and internal Democratic Caucus documents, Reid is planning a two-front approach to work on a new supplemental, focused on attacking Republicans and Bush for vetoing the first supplemental while simultaneously working to bring GOP moderates back into discussions over a possible bipartisan solution to the impasse.
On the political front, Senate Democrats are launching a nationwide public relations blitz lambasting Bush and Senate Republicans for Bush's decision to veto the bill in order to "hold him and his enablers accountable," a senior Democratic leadership aide said.
Tell Congress: DONT BACK DOWN!

I believe John Edwards said that Congress ought to continue to send the same war funding bill (the one the President Vetoed) to the President with the same condition for a time tabled withdrawal. I agree with Edwards on that...
Boehner wins civil suit against McDermott
By Jackie Kucinich
May 01, 2007
Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) did not have the right to disclose a tape that contained an illegally recorded call between now-Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and members of Republican leadership in 1996, according to a D.C. United States Court of Appeals ruling released Tuesday.
According to court documents, Boehner, who was then Republican Conference chairman, participated in a conference call of Republican leaders, including then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.). The GOP leaders discussed Gingrich’s decision to accept a reprimand from the ethics committee in exchange for the committee’s pledge not to hold a hearing.
The cell phone conversation was picked up by a police scanner and taped by two individuals, John and Alice Martin, who later passed it along to McDermott. The lawmaker, who was the ranking Democrat on the ethics panel at the time, then gave the tape to the media.
Rove appointee Tim Griffin was involved in this one. we'll see within 90 days what will happen regarding an appeal...
McDermott's statement can be found at his web page:
"By a vote of 5-4, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit today sharply limited the free speech protections of the First Amendment in violation of binding Supreme Court precedent.
"A majority of the Court agreed with my position that the First Amendment does not allow the government to punish the disclosure of truthful information on a matter of public importance on the ground that someone else unlawfully acquired the information. However, a separate majority held that those protections did not apply in this case in light of a House Ethics Committee rule. The House Ethics Committee issued a report last December concluding that my disclosure of a tape-recorded telephone call involving then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Republican leaders violated the "spirit" of a rule, but the committee went on to say that no formal or further action would be contemplated or taken.

The Justice Department is investigating whether its former White House liaison used political affiliation in deciding who to hire as entry-level prosecutors in U.S. attorneys' offices around the country, The Associated Press has learned.
Doing so is a violation of federal law.
The inquiry involving Monica Goodling, the former counsel and White House liaison for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, raises new concerns that politics might have cast a shadow over the independence of trial prosecutors who enforce U.S. laws.
Justice spokesman Dean Boyd confirmed Wednesday that the department's inspector general and Office of Professional Responsibility were investigating Goodling's role in hiring career attorneys — an unusual responsibility for her to take.
Goodling "may have taken prohibited considerations into account during such review," Boyd told the AP. "Whether or not the allegation is true is currently the subject of the OIG/OPR investigation."

ATTENTION DNC WEBMASTER:
Everyone in the country knows how bad Bush's popularity rating is these days, and most Democrats really don't care how low it goes.
Secondly, the whole country and the whole world for that matter, knows how incompetent and how arrogant he is and we all certainly know that he repeatedly said he would veto any bill with a date for withdrawal, and that he has, in fact, now vetoed the Iraq Withdrawal Bill. We expected no less.
One would expect however when visiting the Democratic National Committee website to find a warm inviting place where one can find all sorts of good information about the party and their wonderful slate of Democratic Presidential Candidates...but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
What do we see? GEORGE BUSH'S UGLY MUG...and an article all about how bad is ratings are and how he vetoed the Iraq Withdrawal Bill...well, duh!
Suggestions....change the front page...line up some nice pics of our wonderful candidates, and few snippets from their campaigns and some links to their websites.
Maybe even add a few promising signs of hope...show some good legislation that may be creeping its way through congress...or even one of the state legislatures if needed.
THE POINT IS...WE DON'T WANT TO LOOK AT GEORGE'S FACE...IF WE DID, WE WOULD GO TO THE GOP WEBSITE!!
Thanks for letting me vent. Now, please fix the web site.
NO GAS...On May 15th 2007
Body: Don't pump gas on may 15th
Body: ...in April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.
On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.
There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 50 dollars to fill up and in some cases more.
If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take
$2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companys pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.
If you agree (which I cant see why you would not)
resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"
DemocratKickingAss on May 2, 2007 at 09:59 PM,
You're stretching the numbers here, dka. What is the chance that all automobile owners would otherwise fuel up on May 15th? Also, if they fill up on the 14th, or the 16th, then, it pretty much negates the loss of income to standard oil.
I appreciate what you're trying to do, and that is make a national statement of outrage to standard oil and I will not buy gas on the 15th, but standard oil will just brush it off; guaranteed.
A merry goodnight to you all. I hope the blog mods repair this old blog. Ya think Bob Vila has time to take a look at her? Couldn't hurt!;-)
Night all!
goodnight david.
I almost gagged when I saw that picture of monkey boy on our website. What an arrogant POS.
Everytime I hear some reporter saying that Bush and the Congress are getting together to "hammer out a compromise" on the Iraq War emergency appropriations bill, I wonder how that's going to work out. Maybe a decision to sacrifice the lives of just another 1500 American troops instead of another 3300? What can a compromise possibly mean here?

Rudolph Giuliani comes to Thursday night's Republican debate no longer a prohibitive front-runner but jockeying for position like the rest, analysts say, tied or trailing John McCain in critical early states and facing conservatives skeptical he can be their standard-bearer.
Giuliani's once-overwhelming lead in some national polls has narrowed as the newness of his 9/11-fueled candidacy has worn off and voters are starting to see not just the larger-than-life figure from that day, but a politician, stumbles and all, these analysts said.
Perhaps the biggest sign that Republicans aren't yet sold on Giuliani or any of the other candidates is the flurry of interest in someone who won't even be onstage Thursday night -- former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who is widely expected to enter the race in coming months.

BAGHDAD -- A suicide car bomber struck in the main Shiite district of the capital Wednesday, killing at least nine people as the U.S. military said its troop buildup in Baghdad was nearly complete. Three more U.S. soldiers were killed by bombs in the capital.
At least 85 Iraqis were killed or found dead nationwide, police reported. They also included eight people who lost their lives when a roadside bomb destroyed their minibus about 20 miles south of Baghdad.

U.S. inspector general for Iraq under investigation

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Stuart Bowen, the U.S. special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction whose office has uncovered abuse of both Iraqi and U.S. funds, is under investigation himself, a White House spokeswoman said on Wednesday.
"Complaints against Mr. Bowen are being looked at by the integrity committee of the PCIE (President's Council on Integrity and Efficiency), said spokeswoman Emily Lawrimore.
Our name, our handshake, our words are no longer credible.
Bush paused for a moment and then flashed his signature smirk: "I was thinking," the future president replied, "If I was from Seguin, I would have punched him out."
There, just like that, Bush gave my father one of the proudest moments in his life. George W. Bush, after hours of chitchat with hundreds of important people, had remembered that he was from Seguin. It's a tale he would tell over and over to family, friends, other truckers.
...
But, over time, he stopped telling that story. The framed photo of my dad and me with the smiling Bushes now gathers dust on a cluttered desk. And new revelations of White House dysfunction and dishonesty, like those aired on 60 Minutes the other night by former CIA director George Tenet, no longer spur a defense from my father.
He has lost faith in the president, for many reasons: He failed to build consensus. He misled Americans on Iraq. His "go-it-alone attitude" has strained relations with our allies. Our name, our handshake, our words are no longer credible.

Senator subpoenas Rove's e-mails in attorney firings case
POSTED: 9:43 p.m. EDT, May 2, 2007
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman issued a subpoena Wednesday to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in an attempt to get e-mails that President Bush's top political adviser sent regarding last year's firings of eight U.S. attorneys.
Gonzales will have to appear before the committee if the Department of Justice does not respond to the subpoena for Karl Rove's e-mails by May 15.
Justice Department Spokesman Dean Boyd said the department had received the subpoena and was reviewing it. (Read the subpoena, PDFexternal link)
"The Justice Department has already turned over more than 6,000 pages of documents and e-mails to House and Senate committees and voluntarily provided Congress with hours of interviews of several senior Justice Department officials," Boyd said. "Furthermore, the attorney general last month provided six hours of testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee."
In a letter to Gonzales, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, said he had asked Gonzales twice for the e-mails -- once at an April 19 hearing where the attorney general testified about the dismissals and again in an April 25 letter to the Cabinet member.
Rove's attorney said publicly that the e-mails -- many of which were reported to be "lost" -- had been turned over to U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, according to Leahy.
Fitzgerald was using them in his investigation into the leak of the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame, Rove's lawyer said. That probe led to the conviction of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the former chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney.
Leahy said when he questioned Gonzales about the location of the e-mails at the hearing, he said he would look into it and get back to the senator.
"You responded at the hearing that you did not know but would check and get back to me. I have not heard back from you since in response to my question or the letter," Leahy said in the letter.
"I also ask for an immediate response to and full compliance with the outstanding requests for information by the committee and its members to avoid further subpoenas," Leahy wrote.
Gonzales has been accused of dismissing seven prosecutors because of concerns that they were either not doing enough to prosecute Democrats on voter fraud charges or were doing too much in pursuing corruption charges against Republicans. The White House has denied the claims.
The Bush administration has acknowledged that the White House counsel's office did approve replacing an eighth prosecutor, as U.S. attorney in Arkansas, with a protege of Rove.
The president can legally replace U.S. attorneys but usually does so at the start of a term of office. The midterm firings sparked accusations that some of the dismissals were politically motivated.
Leahy has insisted Rove and other top aides to Bush must testify publicly and under oath before the committee about the prosecutors. He has rejected suggestions that Rove and other Bush officials be interviewed privately instead.

There will never be peace in Iraq while we're there. Most of the country understands that at some level though they might not phrase it that way.
It looks to me like more of the people serving, and more Iraqis, are going to die in order to give some people in the White House and Congress time to figure that out for themselves.

after 7 years of bush? get ready for the reverse my friend. the country will be decades recovering from the damage done by this administration. i'm talking real, tangible, serious damage...not a blowjob. get it?
All these investigations going on and not a sinlge crime to show for it. Finding crime in the Bush administration is a lot harder to do than it was with Clinton.

you want real crimes?
perjury (and not about a blowjob this time). shoplifting. soliciting a prostitute. stalking young boys online. influence peddling...alot of that. these are just the tip of the republican corruption iceberg.

That's a deal. You clean up yours. We'll clean up ours.
And in fact, that's what a lot of rank and file Republicans are doing.
Some chose to get involved in the primary process and to support candidates they thought better represented them.
A great many others decided it was just easier to vote for a Democrat.
There are pros and cons to each line of reasoning.
Posted by IN-THE-US on May 3, 2007 at 01:27 AM Yes actually it is a game with a lot of them in DC that keeps the money comming in the partys coffers.
I think it was Rumsfeld who said that Democracy isn't pretty.
But I lean toward John Adams. Who wrote in a letter to his wife about July 4th,
I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.
It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.
It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward for evermore.

ola, lechuzas,
Mr Bush, tear down this wall!
The arrogant and imperious ghost of the old geezer has made a third appearance at the wall being constructed at the Texas-Mexico border this morning. " Mr Bush, Tear down this wall!" he moans and wails displaying his usual distain for these implements of separation.
An earlier appearance of the geezer on Sunday at the wall around the green zone in Iraq drew such furious fire fron the unnerved GI's that his message was lost to all but lip-readers. The geezer despondently pouffed in a huff, defeated.
The original sighting of the geezer's ghost at the freedom constraining, US funded wall in Palestine has been thoroughly and completely refuted by science. However, some observers still believe some message was transmitted somehow.
In response, President Bush says he has found science, and continues in his unwaivering support of walling out the enemies. Mr Bush now denies that he can hear voices, voices no one else can hear, but is having difficulty in getting his zzzz's and has a noticeable haunted look about him.

Good morning dems!
Last Saturday I saw Bill Clinton speak at Michigan. I really miss having a legally elected intelligent person represent us.
I disagree with him on one point though. He told us to be civil. Sorry Bill, it just isn't in me anymore. In fact, I actually think I'm becoming shrill and I don't effing care.
I'm tired of being lied too. Tired of being lied about. Tired of having people shove their perception of morality down MY throat. Tired of the idiot in cheif getting his way or else. I'm tired of a news media that cares more about Brittany's hair than the rest of the world.
Seems to me that the only people bothering with being civil the past six years has been the dems. It doesn't seem to work.
is it me or is the news from iraq being buried deeper in media?

A rocket attack on Iraq's heavily fortified Green Zone killed four Filipino contractors working for the U.S. government, the American embassy said Thursday. It was the third straight day that extremists used rockets or mortars to hit the area where Iraq's parliament meets.
The embassy said Wednesday's attack left it "with a profound sense of sadness and regret" over the loss of Filipinos who "were integral members of our embassy community."
The brief statement provided no other details about the attack, including the time or location of the explosion in the Green Zone, which is home to the U.S. and British embassies and thousands of American troops. Such information often is withheld to avoid giving extremists information for future attacks on the area.
However, the whistle of suspected rockets had been heard passing over the Tigris River in central Baghdad and into the Green Zone on Wednesday evening. It was the third straight day that the zone was hit by rockets or mortars, heightening concerns about security in the area.
In other violence in Iraq on Wednesday, a suicide car bomber struck in the main Shiite district of the capital, killing at least nine people, as the U.S. military said its troop buildup in Baghdad was nearly complete.
Three more U.S. soldiers were killed by bombs in the capital. At least 85 Iraqis were killed or found dead nationwide Wednesday, police reported. They also included eight people who lost their lives when a roadside bomb destroyed their minibus about 20 miles south of Baghdad.
Also Wednesday, two U.S. soldiers were killed and two others were wounded when a bomb devastated their vehicle in southern Baghdad, the U.S. command said. Another soldier died in a blast in western Baghdad, the command said.

Slide Show: Hundreds of Troubled Species Await Official Protection
Making the endangered species list isn't easy when the queue is 280 species long view the slide show
By Coco Ballantyne
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and its parent agency, the Department of the Interior, have lately come under fire for their management the Endangered Species Act. Last week a document was leaked that reveals plans to revise the law without prior congressional approval.
While agency officials claim that the proposed changes would improve the act's consistency and clarity, environmental groups contend that they would loosen restrictions on timber and other industries, undermine wildlife protections, and reduce the total number of federally protected species. Within days of the leak, federal investigators sent a report to Congress revealing that a high-ranking Interior Department official has been altering reports written by scientists, effectively weakening safeguards for vulnerable species.
turns out humans are only one of the species endangered by the bush administration

Why isn't the Asshole president negotiating with Nancy Pelosi about the Iraq Bill? Instead he sends his cronys to talk with them. What a slap in the face. He has no intention of being bipartisan. He wants it his way or the highway. He should put away his bottle and his coloring books and sit down with Nancy Pelosi and come to an agreement. Or maybe he is too f***ng arrogant and moronic to sit down with anyone. He'll soon be negotiating in the mirror with a bottle in one hand and his crayons in the other.

ZAGREB (Reuters) - Croatia will open a major war crimes trial in June of two generals indicted for atrocities against rebel Serbs, in another test case of its readiness to deal with the recent past.
Mirko Norac and Rahim Ademi, an ethnic Albanian, have been charged with commanding troops who killed some 30 Serb civilians and prisoners of war during a swift commando incursion into rebel territory in southern Croatia in September 1993.
The case was initially investigated by the Hague war crimes tribunal for former Yugoslavia but was later transferred to the Croatian judiciary.
Croatia to try two generals for war crimes in June
This sounds like something we should be doing. We should ask the Hague War Crimes Tribunal to investigate bush and cheney for crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes against peace.
bush and cheney intentionally started the war with Iraq based on known lies and thousands of Iraqi civilians have died as a result of their blunder.
