Dean Applauds Immigration Vote in Senate

Dean Elogia Voto Sobre Reforma Migratoria en el Senado

Howard Dean, Presidente del Comité Nacional Demócrata, emitió la siguiente declaración luego del voto en el Senado que permitió seguir adelante con el proyecto de ley para la reforma integral del sistema de inmigración. En su mensaje, Dean reafirmó el apoyo del Partido Demócrata por una reforma integral que restaure el orden en la frontera, proteja a los trabajadores y a sus sueldos, deje de dividir a las familias, y que permita que inmigrantes trabajadores que paguen sus impuestos y obedezcan la ley tengan la oportunidad de aplicar para la legalización y eventualmente ganarse las responsabilidades de la ciudadanía:

“El voto de hoy es un testimonio del gran liderazgo del Senador Harry Reid, que lo hace merecedor a un gran crédito por haber logrado unir a Senadores de ambos partidos con el objetivo de discutir el importante tema de la reforma migratoria. Los Demócratas hemos sido consistentes y nos hemos expresado con claridad, estamos comprometidos a la reforma integral del sistema de inmigración. También estamos comprometidos con cambiar el tono de este debate, y por eso es que hoy el debate de inmigración en el senado está centrado en buscar soluciones, no en la criminalización, la retórica mal intencionada, y el uso de los inmigrantes como chivos expiatorios como fue el caso bajo los Republicanos en el último Congreso. El Presidente Bush ahora debe ejercer la influencia que le quede con su propio partido para pedirle a los Republicanos extremistas que dejen de obstaculizar, y permitan que se apruebe la reforma integral del sistema de inmigración que el pueblo estadounidense apoya y espera.”

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement after the Senate voted to move forward on the comprehensive immigration reform bill. In the statement Dean reaffirmed the Democratic Party's support for comprehensive reform that restores order to the border, protects workers and their wages, stops dividing families, and allows hard working immigrants who pay taxes and obey the law the opportunity to apply for legalization and eventually earn the responsibilities of citizenship:

"Today's vote is a testament to the leadership of Senator Harry Reid, and he deserves a lot of credit for bringing senators from both sides of the aisle together to address the critical issue of immigration reform. Democrats have been clear and consistent, we are committed to comprehensive immigration reform. We're also committed to changing the tone of this debate, and that's why today the immigration debate centers on solutions, as opposed to criminalization, scapegoating, and mean spirited rhetoric Republicans favored in the last Congress. President Bush must now use whatever political clout he has left with his party to urge Republicans on the extremes to stop standing in the way, and allow the comprehensive immigration reform the American people support and expect."
