House Democrats Work to Make College Tuition More Affordable
Posted by Emily Smith on June 14, 2007 at 04:54 PM
The House Education and Labor Committee voted 30-16 to approve legislation that would make college tuition more affordable. The "College Cost Reduction Act of 2007" would boost financial aid by almost $20 billion over the next 5 years while cutting interest rates on subsidized student loans and increasing the Pell Grant Scholarship.
"This legislation represents Congress's biggest effort since the GI Bill was passed more than 60 years ago to help Americans pay for college. We are committed to growing and strengthening America's middle class. A key to that goal is making sure that every qualified student can afford to go to college and this vote takes us a tremendous step in the right direction," said Rep. George Miller, the chairman of the committee and the sponsor of the legislation. "Not only does this legislation meet our promise of making college more affordable, but it does so in a fiscally responsible way, at no new cost to taxpayers. For far too long, college costs have grown faster than families' ability to pay them. With this bill, we are saying that help is on the way."
As a student I know full well the burden of paying tuition, and I think other students would agree with me when I say that this type of relief can’t come soon enough.

I don't have words to tell our Democrats in the House and Senate that are working so hard to get our Government back to par, how much I love and appreciate them.
I hope all will join me in giving them a word of thanks by writing to your Rep. and Sen.
Let us write to all of them in this Democratic Blog, also.
What a wonderful World it is under the Democrats Majority.

Yes, I do appreciate the NEW House in understanding how hard it is for the average person to go to college. With so many other things going on, I hope this doesn't go unnoticed.
I was worried about how the Speaker would fare, but so far I have been more impressed than I thought I would be.......... YOU GO GIRL!!!!!

This is just the kind of bill we should be passing ...not wasting time resurrecting a Bush-drafted immigration bill that gives amnesty to those hiring illegal workers.
Good to see the House is staying on agenda.

The next problem is to get enough bipartisan support to make it veto proof.
This bill is important to the future of our country, however it doesn't fit into Bush's agenda, and I can see him vetoing it just for spite.

Now if our party would address the issue of illegal immigration in a sensible and common sense manner. We must secure our borders. We must stand up for our middle class workers and protect jobs for our citizens who are legal Americans. It is time the Democratic Party remembered who is their base - who votes them into office. I am so disappointed in our legislaters in forgetting the middle class who works hard, raised our children, educate them, pay taxes and do the right thing. It is time for our party representatives do the same thing. I am seriously considering changing my party affiliation to Independent.

The only way to protect our workers is to protect ALL workers.
We need to stand up for the rights of workers around the world, and put an end to exploitation of workers through these "free" trade agreements.
Until and unless we have international protections for workers of all countries, we will be inundated by cheaper labor coming here, and by the loss of jobs to sweat shops overseas.
We will also continue to be inundated with economic refugees who are coming here because the dumping of subsidized agricultural products on third world markets, and the movement of factories from one labor market to a cheaper and less restrictive labor market will continue as long as "free" trade as opposed to FAIR trade agreements continue to be made willy nilly to exploit workers and fatten up the already overpaid corporate executives.
We need to call a halt to our government kissing up to the sociopathic practices of Big Business, and stop pandering to the rich and greedy.

History has proved that the middle class numbers always increase by several Billion under the Democrats. If you are this impatient maybe it would be best you write in the Republican Blogg and leave our Democratic elected along.

Sunnytoo,
This is a place to rejoice in the aid being given to students (such as myself) who can't afford to go to college, yet recognize it as the only way to advance in our society. Freeforall is right, Democrats work wonders for the middle (and lower) class.
This is not a place to be reaming the Democratic party about illegal immigration. But, since you bring it up, illegal immigrants are not competing for middle class jobs. They aren't even competing for housing in middle-class neighborhoods. Consequently, they aren't taking up space in your community's public schools (their in the underfunded one a few miles away) or draining our government funds (which they aren't eligible for, anyway).
I say this because your post seems very hostile toward democrats and toward immigrants. Neither of which is appropriate.
