Mitt Romney Strapped Family Dog to Roof of Car

From the open thread, DPD found this:

Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family's hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon's roof rack.

[snip]

As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. "Dad!" he yelled. "Gross!" A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who'd been riding on the roof in the wind for hours.

As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway.

The spin on this is "emotion-free crisis management."

Visions of Imogene Coco and the Griwald's family dog from National Lampoons Family Vacation come to mind.

Is this some new form of animal waterboarding? Can't imagine what Romney would choose as his favored form of torture at Gitmo.

I can see PETA now throwing bukets of excrement on Romney's wife's fur coat next time the go to a black tie Republican fund raiser. Don't stand too close, Biff.

I can't believe not one person on Romney's staff warned them not to bring this up. Is the whole staff that stupid? Unbelievable.

PETA isn't going to do anything. They're the bunch that lied to the humane society in Virgina, got a bunch of dogs and cats and then killed them and threw the bodies in dumpsters. PETA is just a bunch of spoiled brats out to raise hell and try to get off with a phony excuse.
The ASPCA and the American Humane societies have been working for animal welfare for over a hundred years. They've worked to get laws to prevent cruelty to animals, and Romney likely broke several of those laws with the way he mistreated that dog.
He ought to get hauled up before a judge, fined and the setter impounded so he can be given to a caring home.

First, I'd like to start off by pointing out that in the early 80's most people didn't wear seatbelts or use baby carseats. But we're talking about a dog here...my dog loves to stick her head out the window for an entire journey! I really doubt that Seamus was miserable--it probably felt just like a ride in a convertible. Mitt is a dog lover and the fact that he brought the family dog on the trip showed that he loved it. When their dog couldn't go on a trip with them Mitt and Ann used to drive their dog an hour away to relatives in the country just so that their dog didn't have to be locked up in a kennel. They certainly had the money to board the dog and yet they took the time to do a 2 hour round trip at the beginning and end of their trip to make sure their dog was in a loving environment. I think that because Mitt is squeeky clean (He really IS...I know him) his opponents are showing their desperation with this supposed dog abuse.

Oh-My-God - This was leaked by his own people to show the American public how smart and cool in a crisis he is? Every candidate comes up with a log cabin story, but "...and then I hosed the dog crap off the car, stood tall, and persevered..." Ohhhhh, that takes the caka. I'd nickname him Brownback (Romney, not the dog) but that name has been taken already by another Republican candidate.
Here's my take on what other leading Republicans would have done in the same situation;

Bush - Blamed terrorists for the dog's diarrhea, suspended civil liberties.
Chaney - Shot the dog.
Mark Foley - Ignored the dog, jumped in the back seat with Romney's son.
Paul Wolfowitz - Ignored the dog, jumped in the backseat with Romney's daughter. Got her a job at the World Bank.
Gonzales - Imprisoned dog at Guantanemo, suspended Habeus Canis (no access by SPCA allowed).
Brownback - Blamed the Clintons for the dog's diarrhea, tightened his cillice to make his thigh hurt more.

So Dogblog, you think the pup was enjoying himself, huh? Why don't you try riding on top of a luggage rack and see how you like it? I bet just the trip to the top of the car was scary in and out of itself. Just how much are you willing to bend your sense of right and wrong for what seems like a blind adoration of one of the "saints." Your "religion" is showing.
