President Bush Vetoes Hope For Millions of Americans, Governor Dean Responds

Governor Dean released the following statement in reaction to Bush's veto of life saving stem cell funding.
“President Bush’s veto of life-saving stem cell research is just another example of how out of touch he is with the American people,” Dean said. “Bush once again put political posturing ahead of sound science, turning his back on the overwhelming majority of Americans who support stem cell research and the 100 million Americans suffering from debilitating diseases who could benefit from this life-saving science. Republicans should stand up to this President and instead stand with the American people by overriding his veto. We absolutely must elect a Democratic President in 2008 to provide the change in direction that the American people have demanded.”
It's important to remember that the Republican candidates for President aren't any better on providing funding for this life saving research. As recently as this week smooth talking Mitt Romney was flip-flopping yet again by coming out against stem cell funding.

There is a joke going around that Bush isn't against stem cell research, he just wants it to be privatized! I think this decision just shows how out of touch with the American people the Republican party is. While I respect his moral stance on the issue, if he were committed to finding other sources for disease prevention as he says, why not spend the money on programs that seek to provide health care and prevent diseases (such a the Global Health Fund and Millennium Development Goals).
Instead, he says spends $340 billion in Iraq. According to the Borgen Project, it costs just $23 billion annually to reverse the spread of Malaria and AIDS.

If you could make abortion a multi-billion dollar business, Bush would be arguing for tax cuts to help it grow further.
Where are the compassionate conservatives? Should they not be out on the streets demanding that the federal government should free the blastocysts being held prisoners in freezers all around the country? Are there candle vigils being held outside laboratories where they will be destroyed?
In fact, where ARE the Republican trolls? I haven't heard a peep out of them in this space for months and months.
Of course, this is yet another disgrace from the GOP. Now will someone explain to me why any Democrat is supposing abstinence only education in schools? We all know it doesn't work so why play nice with the very same fundamentalists who block embryonic stem cell research? The Dems must decide where they stand. I have no problem with them supporting liberal evangelical causes such as eliminating poverty but don't sell out on policies that make our nation worst just appease sexual mores held by some religious people. Let's stand for things that work and make sense ... yes they should be ethical as well. I think embryonic stem cell research can be done ethically.
Clinton/Obama 2008 = #1 on stem cell research.

As it stands right now, I believe any Democratic pres/veep combo = stem cell research.
