Breaking: Senate Subpoenas White House, Cheney's Office
Posted by Stephanie Taylor on June 27, 2007 at 02:11 PM
The Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's office today for documents related to the Bush administration's illegal domestic spying program.
Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chair of the Committee, signed the subpoenas, which also named the Justice Department and the National Security Council.
"We're aware of the committee's action and will respond appropriately," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said. "It's unfortunate that congressional Democrats continue to choose the route of confrontation."
The showdown between the White House and Congress could land in federal court.
Sen. Leahy cited in his cover letter the Bush administration's "consistent pattern of evasion and misdirection" which made the subpoenas necessary. The deadline to comply is July 18.

After 18 months of playing nice with polite requests, Sen. Leahy has had enough and goes all legal on their outlaw butts. GOOD. FINALLY.
So today Wolf Blitzer asks why is Cheney the Democrats' "punching bag." The fat fascist hasn't a glove mark on him and he's overnight a punching bag. Blech.

You are absolutely right (watching CNN now). Of course, one could argue that Cheney earned all the special attention by working in secret or claiming that he's not subject to oversight.
I think its about time our elected ones started what they were elected to do....of course we all know that Bush and his Bushettes will refuse the supoenas claiming "royal power" or something. What needs to be done is for the powers of the DNC need to tell Pelosi to knock off the no impeachment crap she's been preaching and bring the 2 up on charges in the House.
davesback - as long as the impeachment clause remains in the Constitution, it can't be off the table. Criminal actions by the Executive must have consequences or the bad-precedent bar is permanently lowered. That had better not be the case or the rule of law is lost.
Hoooah!!!!
It's about time!
No more waffling around!
We need to play hardball with these criminals!
ABOUT TIME!!! Keep the pressure up! Well done!
