Bush Opposes Pay Raises for the Troops, Tries to Blame Congress
Posted by Stephanie Taylor on July 20, 2007 at 12:02 PM
President Bush criticized Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) this morning for pulling the Defense Authorization bill from consideration, saying the move would deny a pay raise to soldiers serving in Iraq:
"Even members of Congress who no longer support our effort in Iraq should at least be able to provide an increase in pay for our fighting there."
Except that last May, Bush administration budget officials said that the troops don’t need bigger pay raises. The White House also opposed increasing benefits for widows of slain soldiers by $40 per month, and opposed additional benefits for surviving family members of civilian employees.
Democrats in Congress fought back. Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), an Iraq war veteran, said at the time:
"But the fact is, is that those privates who are making $17,000 a year, those privates that are leaving their wives, their kids at home, many of whom have to survive on food stamps, those privates who saw what we did in the defense bill, who said that’s great, 3.5% pay increase, not even $1,000 more a year, a couple hundred dollars a year, the President of the United States said, private, 'Thank you for your service to your country, but that's too much of a pay increase.' Mr. Speaker, I hope the people at home are watching. The President of the United States said a couple hundred dollars more a year to a private making $17,000 a year is too much."

there's nothing wrong w/this picture...the privates only give sweat and blood for the bush-cheney iraqmire, while the donors-cronies & no-bid contractors give donations. says clearly privates are expendable vs donors-cronies & no-bid contractors. and, this mafia administration has always blamed someone else...the demos, the generals, the iraqis, the media ... aliens next?
Wait a minute,
You're telling me that Bush doesn't care about the troops!?
I had no idea.
Well whats next?? Our brave Military already have to buy there bullet proof vests. And like it has been said they leave there love ones to fight the republicans war over there oil. I say don't pay them at all. Make them buy there own bullets and airfare over to Iraq. This will make them very patriotic from the christian right and the republican party view. But, what I do know?? I'm just a person who would love to see all of them come home and be able to make love to there wife or husband. Be able to hold there child in there arms. But. I live in a country were oil and money is more important then American lives.
actually, not to far fetched ... i wouldn't be surprised if moron and shotgun are pow-wowing w/rove on how to phrase a blame on us voters in 2006 that changed the makeup of congress to change course...but again why would they listen to the voters if they wouldn't listen to the generals they conveintly replaced, when they could blame voters too with the previous list i posted above? did i miss any other aka skapegoats?
"The White House also opposed increasing benefits for widows of slain soldiers by $40 per month, and opposed additional benefits for surviving family members of civilian employees."
what are the benefits and other perks moron and shotgun will reap after they are out?
"HisExcellencyTheHonorable***Frosty"
wrong thread tony snowjob.
it would be an eye popper to see the rewards aka profits the no-bid contractor donor-cronies of moron and shotgun arranged. i'd advocate 75% of their profits reaped be returned to the govt, to then be equally distributed as to all those who serve(d) ... deserve(d).
Bush should resist from placing blame on this war and just solve the problem at hand. He has spent over 340 billion dollars on the war [Borgen Project] and still soldiers are in lack of supplies. Where has all the money financing this war gone?
With this administration everything to do with money is a big Blackwater hole.
This is getting pitiful. I can not believe that our President is taking such measures to limit the cost of the disaster by limiting increases in much needed assistance to our military personnel, especially those who are on the ground and put in harms way 24/7.

Bush is truly a remnant of a dynastic, plutocratic age in which the poor are expected to fight the battles for the rich. This despicable president views the hard working soldiers as slaves for violence. He says that the Democrats do not support the troops for wanting to end this illigitimate war. He along with his right wing chronies just want them to fade away along with their pay. A substantial pay raise for our hardworking servicemen and women must mean a rollback of a tax cut for millionaires. Let's impeach "King George."
More abuse of the military by the Bush administration.
These are people, human beings!
I know that doesn't count for much with the Bushiato, since the Bush administration only sees a person as something (not someone) to be manipulated, and used.
Bush is the ass who stated that " "good man...We're going to get him some new legs." about a soldier who lost his legs in Iraq.
Like that's going to make up for they guy's real legs?
Like it's going to make up for pain and suffering? Like that's going to make up for the substandard medical care that the system is currently providing?
What a sociopath! He just mouths whatever half-formed thought comes to his head that he thinks will make the American People think he's a great guy, and never a concern for human costs.
I can't stand to watch him, or even hear his speeches on the radio. He makes me want to puke.
SAVE OUR SOLDIERS!!! IMPEACH THIS ASS!!!!
Nancy Periosi and Harry "Periosi" Reid took IMPEACHMENT OFF THE TABLE against the will of the general population, so Nancy Periosi and Harry "Periosi" Reid aren't likely to be very concerned about whether or not the regular military families have to use food stamps, after all, they have OK'd the high paid private militias, like Blackwater, etc. If Private Militas weren't getting all the public money, the regular military would have plenty, but sadly they are, thanks to our Periosi Leaders.
Tom DeLey just published a book saying that Liberals are really Communists. It's not surprising that any wage increases for the ordinary soldier and worker must be seen as a Communist plot to earn a living wage. From President Nixon to now,Republicans have, really like National Socialism" slowly eroded civil liberties and concern for their "other America". It's the story of cooking a lobster all over again, raise the temperature of the water slowly enough, and the lobster doesn't even realize it's being cooked! If Liberals are Communist, than the Administration and the for-profit Sen. DeLay should work to close every religious not-for-profit mission, hospital, church, synogogue and mosque which like Christ, Mohammed and Moses provides services and alms to the silent majority.
What can be taken off the table, sure as hell, can be put back on the table, and in spades!
Just because some politician screwed up doesn't mean that the issue is dead, it just means we have to work harder to get it put back.
IMPEACH NOW!!!!
bush needs this money for the private army he has there making 25 thousand a month.
Why is anyone surprised at anything Bubba Bush does? He's dumb as a rock, he has absolutely no morals or ethics and "Snake" Cheney is his mentor. And he thinks Tom DeLIE is a God. Iraq is Bubba's war and everyone followed him like sheep and now pay back time is here. This country will never recover from Stupid's actions in our lifetime and he has the gall to think about his "legacy". He and Snake should both be impeached (since they can't be hanged by the neck until dead).
My worry is that the Democratic Party won't take the bulls by the horn and do something to at least try to get us out of this mess. Has anyone given any thought to the "what if" idea of someone else as President instead of FDR after Pearl Harbor? It's too bad that some former politicians who did have some sense (Sam Rayburn, for example) can't be cloned.
Any person who can still back Bubba should be put in solitary.
And now he has the nerve to say we need to stay in Iraq to control AL-QAIDA. As if they were there before the war...
The issue isn't really the spin that President Bush is putting on the military pay raises. It would take a really daffy person to believe this President is speaking 100% God's honest truth - and not even the Republican Party is that gullible. Instead, this is clearly a Presidental criticism of how Congress is being managed. If Congress pulls a bill from the floor - bam! Criticism. If Congress modifies a bill to deliver more & better services - bam! Criticism. When Congress defends it's action - bam! Criticism.
Whenever this President issues a veto threat, Congress should invite his spokesperson to a public meeting on the record to prevent the misunderstandings this President so clearly thives upon.
Impeachment is too good for this Bush, Rove and Cheney.
The process would get in the way of making progress on domestic issues that need to be addressed.
I say...December of 2008..get the audit of where and to whom our tax dollars went in funding this war. Then follow the money and indict them! Of course US Attorney Pat Fitzgerald had better get them to surrender their passports before Jan. 2009! I know deep in my gut they can be brought down the way Capone was...follow the money cuz that is all these guys care about. Where is the over 10billion the OMB can't find that went to private contractors in Iraq? I would really like to know and I would really like Halliburton and other private contractors (and their boards) to be held accountable.
