Minimum Wage Increases Today

Posted by Michael Link on July 24, 2007 at 10:53 AM

Obstructionist Republicans wouldn't allow it to come to a vote under the last Congress, but the Democrats made sure they made it a priority when they took office earlier this year.

Now, finally, after a decade, the minimum wage will increase 70 cents. It's the longest amount of time it's gone without a boost since the minimum wage was introduced. American workers earned this raise, and while it's a shame that Republicans blocked it for so long, finally we can celebrate that it will go into effect and improve the lives of families across America.

And it isn't just workers that are happy about the changes. According to one columnist:

In Georgia, one of the reddest of the "red states," one might expect an almost universal denouncement of the raise in the minimum wage. In fact, the opposite is true.

Business owners and managers I've spoken with aren't concerned. They're glad the minimum wage is going up because workers deserve it and they believe it will help our local economy.
[...]
"Higher wages benefit business by increasing consumer purchasing power, reducing costly employee turnover, raising productivity and improving product quality, customer satisfaction and company reputation," a statement by Business for a Fair Minimum Wage explains.

"A fair minimum wage is a sound investment in the future of our communities and our nation," concludes the statement, which I endorsed along with hundreds of business people nationwide, including the owners of Georgia businesses such as Morning Glory Farm in Clermont, North Georgia Woodworks in Toccoa, and Sugar Magnolia B&B, Flyer Candy Bars, Simply Web and Grand Central Pizza in Atlanta.

It's not just good politics, it's good economic policy that is good for workers and their employers. Americablog and others will be liveblogging the issue on this important day.

UPDATE: Governor Dean's statement:

Because Democrats kept their promise, America’s working families will receive a long-overdue pay raise today. Democrats believe that if you work hard and play by the rules, you should be able to earn a decent living in our country. Republicans blocked Democratic efforts to increase the minimum wage for 10 long years but today, all Americans win. This milestone only reminds us that there is much more work to be done to help all Americans achieve a better life for themselves and their families.

Interesting, I guess that now means Congress can get their raise? Perhaps the salaries for Senators and Representatives should be tied to whenever a minimum pay raise occurs?

The song " we cant make it here " is right on. To bad the republicans and the christian right do not like war vets. They only like to kill Americans. They don't want them anymore if they are hurt in there DAMM war. As long as they can get there blood money they do not care who's blood they use as long as its not theirs.

Keeping promises and puting into practice is what they say is what the Democrats are all about. The Republicans promise less income taxes then raise every other taxes sky high. People can hardly make it under Republicans unless they are rich.

I am sorry,I intended to say: Putting into practice what they promise is what the Democrats are all about.

Well, one for thing for the democrats. I must admit, though, the federal minimum wage increase was long overdue and I didn't see the Republicans doing much to fix it. As a matter of fact, many Republicans came over and voted for this bill. Like I said in a post before, I don't care who comes up with the idea. As long as it makes sense and it helps Americans, I'm all for it no matter which party sponsors the bill. Very good!

It's about time we won something.

The increase of the minimum wage is a major victory against the rising price of, well, everything. Maybe we'll be able to take that vacation after all.

Wow, a $.70 increase in the minimum wage! Now the poor can afford to put a down payment on a steak…duh!

Any congressmen or senator, and the idiots who support them, who is now making more the six times the national average who thinks this is an accomplishment should shoot themselves!

Listen up dumbacrats. Fifteen years ago the average meatpacker in this country was making $20.00 an hour, and now they make less then $9.00, and in many places as low as $6.00 bucks an hour. And whom can the working class thank for this. How about the dumbacrats, and republicants for aiding and abetting all the illegal aliens in this country who will work for those wages?

“The rate of pay for the office referred to under section 703(a)(2)(b) of the Ethics Reform Act of 1989 (5 U.S.C. 5318 note) shall be the rate of pay that would be payable for each such office if the provisions of section 703 (a)(2)(b) and 1101 (a)(1)(a) of such act (5 U.S.C. 5318 note and 5305) had not been enacted.”

If you can’t make any sense of this mambo jumbo, let me explain it to you. This is the U.S. senate sneaking themselves a $23,200 raise for themselves in 1989, giving themselves a salary of $141,300 a year. They took this raise right after they voted not to take one, because the public was bitching about them making too much money.

What this piece of trickery says, even though there is no mention of a raise, or even an amount; is that if they don’t vote on this bill, they automatically get the raise. Nobody voted on it; they got the raise, and then they all claimed that they didn’t know that’s what it meant, but they were all keeping it. Who would have guessed?

So let me get this straight; twenty years ago our leaders, both dumbacrats, and republicants, gave themselves a $23,200 a year pay raise to $141,300, and over the next 20-years they have raised their wages by another $16,803 a year to $158,103. And now they are raising minimum wage by $.70 an hour, which translates to about $28.00 a week, or $1,456 a year, before taxes, which in my state of NJ, wouldn’t pay for two months, rent for the average person!

And yet somehow some of you people think the dumbacrats just accomplished something? It wasn't just the republicants in charge for the last 20-years, so don't just blame them for not doing anything about it...duh!

It took these clowns 20-years to raise the minimum wage, and it will take those earning minimum wage 20-years to make what these lowlife pieces of garbage gave themselves 20-years ago for just one year. They gave themselves more in one month 20-years ago, then what they are giving the poor for working a whole year today.

Wow, this sure gives a new meaning to the phrase; “It’s good enough for government work…doh!

Anyone who thinks that this is an accomplishment, needs to stop taking the stupid pills they have been taking, and get themselves a reality checkup!

Why?

Because I’m betting these same stupid people, also can’t understand why so many people are dealing, and using drugs in this country!

Wow, a whopping $28.00 a week rise, which probably won’t even cover the cost of the latest gas, hikes. Yeah, that should improve the poor peoples lives!

Oh well, with a little luck the people our leaders screw, will be selling the cocaine they need to sell in order to pay their bills to theirs, and their supporters kids; and not ours?

Smoke, while I do agree with you in principle, this piece of legislation has got the ball rolling on getting us to the place we need to be. True, while the extra $28.00 a week will not put steaks on the plates of low earning Americans or even cover the rising cost of gasoline, it is a step in the right direction and now we need to keep stepping in that direction.

Do not be so hard on the poor Senators most of whom do not do this job for the trivial salary, because the net worth of most of the individuals ensures that they are not living paycheck to paycheck. The one important issue with our senators and the minimum wage is how much to pay the servants, legaly. Because if your ever investigated or running for office you do not want to be using illegal immigrant labor, after all that is just plain wrong and we hold our elected leaders to a higher morale standard.
