PB Rescue Open Thread
Posted by Michael Link on July 2, 2007 at 06:46 PMYou guys wrote quite a bit over at PartyBuilder this weekend and today, so here's a highlight of a few that stood out:
- The Horizon For Wise Women On Their Own. Joanna M. Pucci, an intern for the Women's Leadership Forum, points out that elderly women are living alone in greater and greater numbers and our social security system must recognize the reality of this very vulnerable segment of our population
- Davidual also takes aim at the Republican administration and says that they haven’t done enough to help Americans who cannot afford health insurance in Liberty, Justice, and Health Care for all!
- Paul Thompson advocates making donations to those in need from small gifts such as contributing hair to Locks of Love, to end-of-life organ donations that help turn tragedies into lifesavers.
The Democratic Party gives anybody the ability to write blog posts directly on our website over at PartyBuilder (PB). You can read what everybody has to say, or you can create your own account and start writing posts yourself.

IMPEACH THESE CRIMINALS NOWWWWWWWWW!

It is wrong for a Democratic think tank to use the words "monopoly" and "failed" when referring to public schools. It is wrong for them to advocate beginning privatization by charter and other schools.
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/1364
Fund the public schools, hire good teachers, let them teach without so much paperwork and so must testing...and there will be very successful schools.

I respect the jury's verdict," Bush said in a statement.
Like hell he does. He doesn't respect the law of this land or the people of this country.
He's a traitor. He's given amnesty to a convicted felon because he lied to save all their necks.
Hes lied about the WMD to get us into an unnecessary war and spies on his own people with a Presidential secret police force.
He's turned the DOJ into a bastian of cryonism. He has allowed K street lobbyists to operate publicly out of the White House.
He's let the Vice President weaken the foundation of the CIA and the US military for his own personal war profiteering gain.
He doesn't respect the Islamic people nor does he exhibit any human decency in ordering torture of them. He's put our nation at war with a third of the world's population with his cruel and barbaric actions.
He's alienated our allies and strengthened our adversaries. He's started another Cold War and arms race. He nullified the nuclear arms treaties.
He's used executive signing statements to declare which laws Congress passes that he will obey and which he won't.
He's driven up our national debt to fund tax cuts for the wealthy and borrowed money from the Communist Chinese to pay for it.
He's allowed multinationals to move our national assets to foreign lands along with our jobs. He's imported cheap foreign labor to drive down our standard of living and destroy the American middle class.
He's tried to sell off our infrastructure to foreign governments thereby putting us at their mercy here at home.
By ignoring the jury's verdict in the Libby trial and vetoing the judges's sentence he's dismantaled the the U.S. Courts system and now installed himself in its place.
He's declared himself a law unto himself and the rubberstamp Congressional Republicans allowed him to do it.
They are all traitors to the Constitution they swore to obey. It's treason.
Impeach Gonzales. Then impeach Cheney. And then impeach Bush. And vote to unseat every Republican that has worked with them.
I'm sending this to everyone I know and making copies to hand out in my neighborhood and at public events on the 4th of July.
I'm going to show up at every Republican meeting and event in my area and confront them with their treason.
If they want a fight, they'll get one.

Libby DID NOT "SKATE". He was "let go", AFTER being CONVICTED of 4 FELONIESS. So the culture of corruption goes all the way to the top, President Cheney and his sock-puppet.
BTW, Libby is STILL GUILTY. Chimpy did NOT pardon him, he "Commuted" his sentence to ZERO time served.
Libby is STILL "Found Guilty" of 4 FELONIES.

To, Joanna M. Pucci, I thank for a very good thought for maintaining our Social Security safety net. However, by invoking gender terms into the legislation one opens the possibility of prejudicially excluding a specific gender from future benefits, or making one's life miserable at the very least. The greater concern of her post is naturally elder females, and this will be the greater demographic of her concerns. However, there very well may be males in this category too.
Age is not a gender issue. I respect your concern for women that retire, and are expected to live longer than men, but have little revenue for which to live. However, I would choose gender neutral language over explicit language. The problem that I see with gender explicit language is the same problem that I currently have as a male single parent. People within the human services field are very prejudiced in their dealings, and gender specific language aids said prejudice. As the population ages, there will be a natural occurrence of older women seeking Social Security benefits. However, to specifically target the female demographic we would unwittingly exclude males in which may need the same service. I choose not to put elderly males that may need income retirement security through the same pressures that I face today from our human services sector.

Well, all I'm going to say about Mr. Bush's actions concerning Libby is that he picked a fine time to do this; Fourth of July week. He is bound to get plenty of fire works, and plenty of cover from the other more pertinent issues that should get press coverage, but ultimately will not.
Now the pressure is on the GOP operatives to ensure that the media glosses this over and the electorate forgets about this before November 2008.
Mr. Bush's administration is such a mess!

Yeah, PD, I don't call this "Skating" either! This is treasonous behavior on behalf of the Pres. of the United States. Some one who lied to the Grand Jury can walk away.
I just finished my Letters to Editors of NY times, Washpost, and my local papers. I hope all the rest of you have too. An expression of Outrage must be expressed to the Media.
KEEP THIS IN FRONT OF THE AMERICAN PUBLIC ! HOW BUSH ALLOWED THIS MAN TO WALK. HE IS ALREADY SO LOW IN THE POLLS, HE WILL SOON BE IN NEGATIVES.
I feel smiley as I hear every station I turn to say, "Republicans will pay a price in next year's election!!! " Keep it up, Georgie boy. The war, and these treasonous acts.

This is just so sad.
The young victims of hate crimes can't help but feel the pressure of an American society that has allowed itself to be dominated by fundamentalist Christians who have no mercy for them.
We must all bear some measure of shame for this young man's death. Jesus expects us to stand up to these hypocritical Pharisees.
Attack survivor dies in cruise ship jumpBy JOE STINEBAKER and LIZ AUSTIN PETERSON, Associated Press Writers
HOUSTON - David Ritcheson hated being known as "that kid" — the teenager who was beaten unconscious and sodomized with a plastic pole during a party where one of his assailants shouted "White Power!"
Ritcheson didn't want to stand out from his classmates because of the assault, but he acknowledged in an interview that "it was just really hard to hold your head up, even to walk outside with everyone almost in the world knowing what happened."
That anguish may have contributed to his decision to leap Sunday from a cruise ship to his death in the Gulf of Mexico.
A man at Ritcheson's home who identified himself as the teen's father confirmed the death Monday to The Associated Press. He declined to give his name or comment further, saying the family would issue a statement later.
Ritcheson, 18, rarely discussed his feelings and declined to get counseling after being attacked at the drug-fueled teen party in April 2006. A year later, he testified before Congress in support of a hate crimes bill.
In an interview with the Houston Chronicle this past April, he said: "I shouldn't care what people think or say. It's just the fact that everyone knows I'm the kid. It was bigger than Houston. It was bigger than Texas. It was bigger than America. Everybody in the world knew what had happened and everybody knew the details of it."...

Of course Libby won't pay the fine----He accepted charity by setting up a Legal Defense fund so he could get Repubs to give him money for attorneys and fines! The fine will get paid and soon.
Here's More Good news, Dems.
Another Whistleblower coming forward:
A former member of US military intelligence has decided to reveal what she knows about warrantless spying on Americans and about the fixing of intelligence in the leadup to the invasion of Iraq.

.................This is ONE more lie bush has told.............or someone wrote for him. If bush respects the jury verdict so much why commute the jail time? Excuse my language but this is total bullshit! I've been arrested for idiotic misdemeanors and spent more time in jail than Libby will who btw has been convicted of 4 felonies! Not only would I wait in jail "pending appeal" it's likely I couldn't make bail to stay out during the trial! You lie to some local judge or states Grand Jury, not to mention Federal Grand Jury your ass is in big trouble. Hell just violating misdemeanor probation can get you jail time, unless of course you can't bribe your way out with big payments to some lawyer who spreads the cash around!!!! Bullshit is what this is!

but I remember that the last President of the United States. one William J Clinton, lied to a grand jury and walked away.
and he was found not guilty for impeachment by the Congress, not a Treasonous President, simple simon.
I just got this Article for you all to read:
Why I'm Happy About Libby's Sentence Commutation
So it's official: King George on Monday exercised his powers of clemency to commute the 2 1/2 year prison sentence of Lewis "Scooter" Libby. Did anyone ever really think "Cheney's Cheney" would spend even a nanosecond in jail? But while most of the Democratic world is furious and calling for Bush's head I, on the other hand, am happy and celebrating this joyous moment.
"I respect the jury's verdict," said the King. "But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby’s sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison....My decision to commute his prison sentence leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr Libby. The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged."
So why am I celebrating? Because this decision by Bush is the nail in his political coffin...and with it his legacy. He will forever be known as the president who not only committed the worst military/foreign policy blunder in our nation's history, but the one who defiled and made a constant mockery of our sacred Constitution. I am happy because it really doesn't matter anymore whether Libby served time, does it? He's a convicted felon who committed egregious crimes against freedom and free speech, and he's done his job quite well in tarnishing his vile bosses' reputations. But the greater benefit through all this is that it cements Bush's legacy as a de facto criminal himself. There's no doubt left as to Bush's true motivations and blatant disregard for everything we've held sacred in this country for 231 years. And our children's grandchildren, and their grandkids, will be reading about this buffoon and his corrupt administration as long as there are history books. Make no mistake: the person George Bush hurt most with this decision is, well, Bush himself.
Hillary Clinton summed it up best: "Today's decision is yet another example that this Administration simply considers itself above the law. This case arose from the Administration's politicization of national security intelligence and its efforts to punish those who spoke out against its policies. Four years into the Iraq war, Americans are still living with the consequences of this White House's efforts to quell dissent. This commutation sends the clear signal that in this Administration, cronyism and ideology trump competence and justice."

I'm going to lay out for you what I believe was the Bush objective in those military decisions made following our response to 9/11. You might not like, I myself think that it was foolish, but all that we have seen appears to point in this direction.
I'm suggesting that the objective of the Bush administration was to seize control of Iran militarily, and that they were to justify this action by portraying Iranian interactions with her neighbors as terrorist in nature.
Here's how it goes down. Afghanistan offers up the opportunity, and gives us international support. Next, the Bush administration takes advantage of mixed intelligence conclusions in an attempt to convince some of our allies that Iraq too must be invaded. Relying on faulty intelligence from within Iraq, the administration then assumes that Iraq will be under their control within a matter of months, at which point they can begin moving in on Iran.
At this point we've got Iran flanked. We're in nations bordering Iran from the West, Turkey, Iraq, and Kuwait. We're in a nation bordering Iran from the East, Afghanistan, and we've got an agreement with Pakistan. To the North and South are the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf, respectively. We command the sea.
Of course this is excessively ambitious, but so is the notion that we might ourselves irradicate extremeism from the world or that we might give Iraqis the lives they've always desired simply by removing Saddam Hussein. It isn't exactly a logical conclusion to assume that Iran could be taken this way, but then it wasn't logical to assume that most of what the administration proposed doing was possible. All the pieces had to fall into place for any of it to happen, even those portions of the plan acted upon, and that has yet to happen.
The most disturbing aspect I notice here, is that the administration wants to make it appear as though, while we are perfectly justified in interfearing with the happenings of Middle Eastern nations surrounding Iran, that Iran as a nation is not in the least bit justified in interacting with its neighbors.

You just can't keep this non comparison of illicit activity in perspective can you? Lying about a goddamn blow job, and lying about directly placing our national security, and henceforth, a national security intelligence operative at risk are two completely different scenarios. But, you, in all of your incredulous respectfulness continue to pursue your objective that a lie is a lie as a lie!
I would love to see an anonymous poll that asks if the respondent had ever engaged in oral sex, and if so would they admit to that under oath of Congressional testimony?
What happened to Bill Clinton is happening in every board room in America. No matter what denomination (or is that abomination) of religion they profess to be. We the people never needed to hear about Bill Clinton's extra-marital affair every night on the news for eight years. However, we the people do need to hear about the egregious activities that the present administration is doing to tear down our constitution and our country.
See what I mean about tonight, all? Back to lurking...:-\

Resources were, of course, the objective. Oh I know what your thinking here, "That's crazy, what would the Bush administration want with the Middle East's natural resources, especially all that oil?" Well, if you were the ruler of your country and new that it had become dependent upon petroleum products to retain its status in the world, and suspected that others equally interested in that oil might gain access to it before you, perhaps some new powerful competition, then you might consider this approach also. Hell, you might simply be interested in being the goto guy for all those consumers of oil, which is fairly lucrative when one considers the widespread distribution of that product.
All of this was ridiculous, certainly. We, along with a handful of other nations, had greater access to the regions oil than the rest of the world. Between us there was most definetly enough profit to go around, even enough to keep Persian princes happy. But someone always gets a little too greedy and screws things up for everyone else.
Posted by Marine on July 2, 2007 at 10:37 PM
There's a better way to go about all this. Compromise usually works pretty well. You might not get everything that you want, but you do get a good percentage, which is a lot better than nothing. This became accepted practice, for some, following the decline of the English Empire, who had at one time colonized and claimed for its own use a good portion of the world's land mass.
Truthfully, their approach worked well in most nations, right up until the point at which they became stubborn and began refusing to compromise further. And that happened in nearly every nation they held.
You can take a nation easily, when your technology gives you a considerable advantage. But, when that nation learns your technology, you no longer have that advantage and must begin to act accordingly. This is where Britain, and now the U.S. have had trouble. At this point you must simply learn to treat those nations as peers, rather than as subordinates who must obey, because they no longer believe that they must, and that can be dangerous.

We actually have strained relations with Iran because we decided that it would be prudent to work with England to suppress the nationalization of Iran's petroleum resources in the early 1900's. What this was was Iranians learning to think of themselves as capable of running their own nation following a period during which the Ottoman Empire and then England had been mostly in charge of their lives. England knew that it could convince enough Iranians to work with them, for a price, but they would need help doing that now that they themselves were being reduced in strength.
The influence both nations imposed were able to hold of nationalism until the 1960's when it once again became popular and eventually culminates in the taking of U.S. Hostages and demise of U.S./Iranian relations.
Since that time relations have been stressed. Iran didn't really learn to trust the United States government when all this was going on. There was also our support for Iraq, who was at the time engaged in war with Iran. We haven't learned to accept that Iran is in control of itself, and to trade with her as though she were one of our peers. We don't trust her because we don't know that we could trust a nation who had done similar things to us, but that's only because we have considered our past relations with Britain.

Harry Reid is mad as hell and isn't going to take it anymore:
The President’s decision to commute Mr. Libby’s sentence is disgraceful. Libby’s conviction was the one faint glimmer of accountability for White House efforts to manipulate intelligence and silence critics of the Iraq War. Now, even that small bit of justice has been undone. Judge Walton correctly determined that Libby deserved to be imprisoned for lying about a matter of national security. The Constitution gives President Bush the power to commute sentences, but history will judge him harshly for using that power to benefit his own Vice President’s Chief of Staff who was convicted of such a serious violation of law.

Time to get impeaching Mr. Reid.

Conservatives Call for Bush's Impeachment
Submitted by Chip on Mon, 2007-07-02 20:46. Impeachment
A while ago I suggested that the pro-impeachment coalition join with the anti-illegal immigration forces because of Bush's treason in not securing our country's borders and not enforcing our existing immigration laws. Non-enforcement of existing laws has made this a complex issue, but the complexities can be simplified by enforcing the existing laws.
If we sincerely believe that impeachment is a patriotic imperative, then we also must take a honest look at why we would not join with conservatives to insist that our national sovereignty be protected by enforcing existing immigration laws before any new laws are contemplated, much less enacted. For the government to simply say: "Whoops, we let this get out of control, so now we want to fix by repeating the mistakes of twenty years ago" is unacceptable - and will result in even bigger future problems.
Of course, from the standpoint of political ideology, it's understandable that suggestion would receive a lukewarm reception. So, here are a few actual postings that lead me to conclude that the pro-impeachment coalition should team up with the anti-illegal immigrant forces. Can you imagine yourself agreeing with any of the sentiments?

Leading Maine Columnist Asks Bush to Resign

It's time, Mr. President, to walk away
By BILL NEMITZ, Portland Press Herald
Dear Mr. President,
I don't often write to our summer tourists, but I saw you in Friday's paper getting off Air Force One and -- all due respect, sir -- I was stunned at how beaten down you look.
I know, it was a rough week. There's the war, of course. And your good buddy Tony Blair has moved on. And how about those Republican senators deep-sixing your immigration bill? (Bushwhackers is what they are, every last one of 'em!)
And now here you are in Maine. And just when you could use a little striper fishing or speed golf with the first President Bush, you've got Putin and all those protesters breathing down your neck.
I'm trying to picture you kicking back with "Vlad" over the traditional Walker's Point lobster dinner. You offer him the sterling shell cracker; he fixes you in his steely gaze and replies in that measured monotone, "This thing you call crustacean -- in my country I crush it like bug!"
Are we having fun yet?
Then there's the protest -- a summer buzz kill if ever there was
one. They say 2,000 folks will be in Kennebunkport today
calling for an end to the Iraq war, reductions in global warming,
improved foreign relations and, oh, your impeachment.
It's enough to make you long for the good ol' days, isn't it? When
you could grab Dad's keys, bop down to the village for a few
pops with your old tennis buddy John Newcombe, and then take
the scenic route home because the cops don't patrol that stretch
of ... never mind.
The point is, sir, that this leader-of-the-free-world gig clearly
hasn't worked out. Your approval rating, on a good day, is barely
greater than 30 percent. The more you torture your syntax, the
less anyone seems to listen. And God only knows what happens
when your mom sees that hangdog look on your face -- my gut
tells me Barbara Bush hates sulking.
In short, Mr. President, to look at you these days is to feel your
pain. Some delight in it, but deep down we all know that a chief
executive who walks around looking like his dog just died can't
be good for the country.
So I have a suggestion. Once you and Putin are done bouncing
lawn darts off your missile-shield prototype, stroll down to
where the protesters are massed. Then, before the Secret
Service can tackle you, grab the bullhorn and simply holler, "I
quit!"
The crowd, I guarantee, will go silent. That's when you resurrect
that old "What, me worry?" grin and say, "What I mean to say is,
I'm done. I'm in way over my head here, and since I am The
Decider, I've decided I don't want to make decisions anymore.
From now on, see, I'm The Undecider!"
Think about it, sir. No more talk of impeachment or
congressional subpoenas or illegal immigrants. (Are they still
here?) No more lame imitations on Comedy Central. No more
talking-head debates on whether you could be "the worst
president in U.S. history."
No, sir. Just the peace and quiet of the Maine coast and the
realization that although any fool can become president, it takes
a true patriot to admit when the wheels have come off.
At least consider it, OK, Mr. President? And should you (un)
decide to walk away, I have only one more tiny request:
Take Dick Cheney with you.
Columnist Bill Nemitz

Michael Moore's SiCKO was a big hit this weekend! A summer blockbuster about... health care?
Michael Moore's new movie, SiCKO, could put health care at the top of the nation's political agenda -- and we can help. The longer the film stays high up on the box office charts, the more impact we all will have on the health care debate.
So let’s continue to put all that great energy from Take Back America 2007 to work!
Please see SiCKO this week and bring a friend. Click here to find a nearby theater and showtimes. Click here to watch the movie trailer. And then hand out this action flyer to movie-goers, urging everyone to call 1-866-459-6050 (sponsored by MoveOn.org) and tell the presidential candidates to reject campaign contributions from big insurance and drug companies.
When you go see SiCKO, you'll hear true stories like these:
A middle-class couple with insurance moves into their daughter's basement after cancer forces them into bankruptcy.
An American woman goes undercover in Canada in search of prescription drugs for her illness.
Richard Nixon's secret White House tapes reveal he decided to authorize the first HMOs because "the less care they give them, the more money they make."
A doctor employed by an insurance company testifies before Congress about letting a man die to save her company money—then getting a promotion.
Like most of Michael Moore's movies, this one has a point of view. It's an argument to change our failing health care system. And it comes just in time.
The next president will have to take on health care. Several 2008 candidates -- John Edwards, Dennis Kucinich, and Barack Obama -- have plans to guarantee affordable health care for everyone with a public insurance option. These are the most forward-thinking proposals ever seen in a presidential race.
But the HMOs, big health insurers, and drug companies are busy trying to buy off White House hopefuls with lots of campaign cash. They want to keep making billions by denying Americans affordable health care.
So after the movie, we urge you to call 1-866-459-6050 and tell the 2008 hopefuls to promise not to take campaign money from any of the industry's PACs, lobbyists, or executives. And to turn up the heat, please pass out this flier -- sponsored by Campaign for America's Future, MoveOn.org and Public Campaign Action Fund -- to movie-goers encouraging them to do the same.
Not one more person should suffer or die because our leaders won't stand up to the companies at the root of our health care problems. Please pledge to see SiCKO this week, keep the pressure on the politicians, and not let the special interests dictate the health care debate.
Thank you for all you do.

Frosty the pervert was a very strange repug,
With a tiny brain and a smaller cane, he was always quite the thug.
Frosty the pervert, tried to argue things with not
A bit of intelligence or comparison or thought.
There must have been some oddity in the words that he would say
For when they came out from his fingers he sounded very gay.
Yes, Frosty the pervert is my favorite kind of troll
Cause he never makes much sense and I know he will lose control.
Seriously, Frosty, why do you do this to yourself?

As you who is regularly abused by said health care system, in spite of being insured, I hope for universal health care. BUT the amount of money that will flow from HMOs and Drug Companies this time around will be so great we hardly have a chance.

You know why many people hate the idea of universal health care? They don't want to have to wait, because right now their money gets them to the front of the line. They're special now and universal health care would make them average, forced to wait their turn and be as likely as anyone else to survive/thrive.

Look who had his own surprise today:
Putin tries anew to stop missile shield By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press WriterKENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - Russian President Vladimir Putin sought anew Monday to bat down U.S. plans to build a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe, proposing that the system be expanded and largely Russian-based.
Neither President Bush nor his aides reacted definitively to the surprise idea, Putin's second in less than a month on the topic that has sent U.S.-Russian relations into a tailspin.
From Sunday afternoon through lunch on Monday, Bush used personal charms, his family's wealth and a slew of traditional Maine treats to woo Putin and heal fissures that have the Washington-Moscow alliance at its lowest point since the Cold War. There was lobster, blueberry pie and striper fishing in the Atlantic from his dad's prized speedboat — all from the spectacular setting of the century-old Bush summer compound on a craggy peninsula.
But with all Bush's efforts, it was Putin who appeared to leave Kennebunkport with the upper hand — a situation aptly, if coincidentally, illustrated by Putin's singular success among their group at outsmarting fish.
On substantive issues, the Russian leader appeared to neither lose ground or give any.
He emphasized more talking with Iran about its suspected nuclear weapons program over the tougher U.N. sanctions on Tehran that Bush wants. There was no sign that Putin came closer to the Western view that the Serbian province of Kosovo should be allowed independence. Most dramatically, Putin again showed up at a meeting with Bush with a proposal on missile defense that caught the president off guard...

Well, I guess he showed Poppy what he thinks of his hospitality and his inept crime family.
This guy is scoring major brownie points with the rest of the world's diplomatic corps and the third world.
He's also gaining major respect from the Chinese and the Saudis who can't help but admire how well this guy manuevers around the neocons. Under Bush's tenture we are going to lose all the clout we ever had in the Middle East...and the oil, too.
And Bush's missile defense system is going to be history once we regain the White House. This guy is making an offer only a fool would refuse...and we know what fools the neocons are.
So who will be the real winner in this chess game? Iran, of course. It is going to have more suitors than sanctions if Bush keeps pushing against the Russians...and perhaps even become a protectorate of some pretty powerful players.
The Saudis can't be very happy with the Bushies...nor any of the rest of the Middle Eastern oil tycoons. They could tighten the noose around our oil dependency at any time.

Passages from Saudi school textbooksPublished Date: July 01, 2007

Who is, or who is not punished in a Muslim society:
* A Muslim who kills an apostate or someone who commits adultery is not punished.
* If a Muslim kills an infidel or a slave, he is not punished.
* If a Muslim man, father, or grandfather kills someone from his offspring, he is not punished.
I went through school textbooks taught in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. Here is an English translation of some passages from these books.
A fourth grade textbook on Monotheism and Religion instructs students:
"Any other religion other than Islam is invalid (false)." (P. 29 )
"Hate (yakrah) the polytheists and the infidels" as a requirement of "true faith." (P. 86)...

Fitz:
We fully recognize that the Constitution provides that commutation decisions are a matter of presidential prerogative and we do not comment on the exercise of that prerogative.
We comment only on the statement in which the President termed the sentence imposed by the judge as “excessive.” The sentence in this case was imposed pursuant to the laws governing sentencings which occur every day throughout this country. In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws. It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals. That principle guided the judge during both the trial and the sentencing.
Although the President’s decision eliminates Mr. Libby’s sentence of imprisonment, Mr. Libby remains convicted by a jury of serious felonies, and we will continue to seek to preserve those convictions through the appeals process.
....boy those poll numbers will finally get back in the thirties with this great move...hahahaha

Editorial
Soft on Crime
Published: July 3, 2007
When he was running for president, George W. Bush loved to contrast his law-abiding morality with that of President Clinton, who was charged with perjury and acquitted. For Mr. Bush, the candidate, “politics, after a time of tarnished ideals, can be higher and better.”
Not so for Mr. Bush, the president. Judging from his decision yesterday to commute the 30-month sentence of I. Lewis Libby Jr. — who was charged with perjury and convicted — untarnished ideals are less of a priority than protecting the secrets of his inner circle and mollifying the tiny slice of right-wing Americans left in his political base.
Mr. Libby was convicted of lying to federal agents investigating the leak of the name of a covert C.I.A. operative, Valerie Wilson. Mrs. Wilson’s husband, Joseph Wilson, was asked to investigate a central claim in Mr. Bush’s drive to war with Iraq — whether Iraq tried to purchase uranium from Africa. Mr. Wilson concluded that Iraq had not done that and had the temerity to share those conclusions with the American public.
It seems clear from the record that Vice President Dick Cheney organized a campaign to discredit Mr. Wilson. And Mr. Libby, who was Mr. Cheney’s chief of staff, was willing to lie to protect his boss.
That made Mr. Libby the darling of the right, which demanded that Mr. Bush pardon him. Those same Republicans have been rebelling against Mr. Bush, most recently on immigration reform, while Democrats in Congress have pursued an investigation into whether Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney lied about Iraq’s weapons programs.
All of this put immense pressure on the president to do something before Mr. Libby went to jail. But none of it was justification for the baldly political act of commuting his sentence.
Mr. Bush’s assertion that he respected the verdict but considered the sentence excessive only underscored the way this president is tough on crime when it’s committed by common folk. As governor of Texas, he was infamous for joking about the impending execution of Karla Faye Tucker, a killer who became a born-again Christian on death row. As president, he has repeatedly put himself and those on his team, especially Mr. Cheney, above the law.
Within minutes of the Libby announcement, the same Republican commentators who fulminated when Paris Hilton got a few days knocked off her time in a county lockup were parroting Mr. Bush’s contention that a fine, probation and reputation damage were “harsh punishment” enough for Mr. Libby.
Presidents have the power to grant clemency and pardons. But in this case, Mr. Bush did not sound like a leader making tough decisions about justice. He sounded like a man worried about what a former loyalist might say when actually staring into a prison cell.
Posted by gregg on July 3, 2007 at 12:00 AM
Tom Delay will skate too. The President can't pardon him but his charges will be dismissed or he will be acquitted.

Lewis Libby gets spared of going to jail, real nice of President Bush to do this while our border control agents are still in jail for doing their job to protect the American people. Not only is this an outrage but it's a national disgrace. Where is the justice in this? There is none!! Bush should've used the pardon on those border control agents a long time ago, they are the ones who don't deserve to be in jail but of course the Repubican President Bush that you support is too much of an idiot to realize this! I hope that the American people will turn up the heat and demand that Bush pardon those border control agents now by calling the Whitehouse comments line:

The folks at the Bush compound can't even dislodge their fishing boat much less catch anything worth eating. One of the Junior's 322 Secret Service agents had to put on a wet suit and dive into the sea to disengage Poppy's line yesterday.
Meanwhile, Putin was reeling them in like crazy and pointing his missiles at the Bush mansion while they were all looking down in the water.
Being the new capitalist that he is, the Russian President will sell all the American fish he caught to China who will inject them with toxic growth hormones and sell them back to us.
Not to be outdone by the Bulshevic, Spunky will attempt to shoot a fish out of a barrel with Dead Eyes' shotgun...missing and instead shooting himself in the foot. Bit don't worry, Dr. Frist can be called in to operate using a Terri Schiavo film to make his diagnosis.

delay, libby, abramoff, haggard each serve our purposes in many ways. the objective here in the way politics is played these days is to debase your opponent. to make them appear incompetent, greedy, self serving and dangerous. getting convictions and jail sentences are gravy but the real way these crooks serve our effort to take back the country is the way they undermine how the voters see the right wing, conservatives and the whole set of premises the neocons, creationists and hyper capitalists have brought into the national discourse. i'll take all the libby pardons, all the meth head preachers, all the coin box robbing pimps the right wing wants to offer up....what happened last november is just a small taste of what is coming in 08.

My last wait at the ER (for my wife) we finally got INTO the actual emergency area about 2 1/2 hours after we arrived. We had insurance or it would have likely been much longer. We'll only have to pay $100 for the visit.
That sounds great, except for the nearly $1,000 per month insurance payments we make and all the deductibles in other areas, etc. We pay $800 per month for medications; and that's the insurance price. Fortunately, I have access to some money to pay for this. Otherwise my wife would likely already be dead from diseases that don't have to be fatal at all.
Viva la France.

Good grief,
How can we tolerate a system of justice where the president can pardon the people who have been convicted for his crimes?
Bush Sr was in the thick of the Iran-Contra criminal fiasco, and got to pardon the people who would have testified against him, BEFORE they were even tried, BEFORE the evidence ws even collected. And this conflict of interest into justice passed congress.
Then, Junior and Cheney got to conduct and direct the investigation into the traitorous act of revealing the identity of an agent and operation involved in national security intelligence. The president and his vice were both probably involved, and they get to pardon and protect the traitors who obstructed the investigation and shielded them. Conflict upon conflict.
Re-open the investigation of this felonious act. Give an independent commission the power of waterboarding, etc. to weed out the criminals and dispense justice so that our country can move on. It is only just.
The lying and lawbreaking have to stop, and the guilty need to be made an example of and be punished.
Public servants need to be held to a higher standard. But by whom? Where the hell is congress?

"In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws. It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals. That principle guided the judge during both the trial and the sentencing." — Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.
"When it comes to the law, there should not be two sets of rules — one for President Bush and Vice President Cheney and another for the rest of America. Even Paris Hilton had to go to jail. No one in this administration should be above the law." — Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

As The Curtain Falls, The Villains Exit Stage Right
by thereisnospoon [Subscribe]
Mon Jul 02, 2007 at 04:35:09 PM PDT
With the breaking news of Bush's commutation of Scooter Libby's sentence still rolling hot off the presses, the curtain has finally fallen on yet another depressing piece of Bush Administration kabuki theater. All that is left in this sordid spectacle is the predictable reaction of the audience: the outraged jeers and hisses from the left, the thunderous applause from the right, and the final, painfully evenhanded judgment from the pompous theater critics in the media.
thereisnospoon's diary :: ::
The stage was set from the beginning, when the Administration's fatal character flaw set in motion a chain of events with predictably tragic consequences. Joe Wilson chose to try to set things right in Denmark insofar as he could, and stab through the veil of Administration secrecy and lies, only to be rewarded for his effort by treasonous blades and men poisoned by lust for power. An Administration that came to power through royal coup and was obsessed with invading Iraq at all costs has reaped the inevitable electoral consequences for their transgressions, but the career suicides under a river of evil and the poisoned bodies of betrayed heroes are already too heavy to bear and too numerous to undo. The law, embodied by Fitzgerald, did what it could to hold the guilty accountable--but no more. And in the final act came the inevitable and totally forseeable denouement: illegal obstruction of justice was commuted through the twisted power of legal obstruction of justice, as those who first conspired to pour toxic lies into the ears of the American People walk as free men.
Unfortunately, that will no doubt be the final scene in this foul drama: the villains will exit stage Right, still standing and taking bows to the clamorous approbation of their fans, as the majority of the audience looks on in shocked horror and disbelief, and a vocal segment of the audience makes its displeasure clear. And the critics will turn in their remarks on the whole business with typically dispassionate false objectivity.
The reason this play will end thus is that we have no Hamlets and no Horatios willing to take the risk of committing career suicide and taking arms against this sea of evil. Our Democratic princes and princesses see themselves in quick line for the succession to the throne of our criminally wanton King George; just a few more years, they tell themselves, and this nightmare will be over and all will be well in Denmark again. In the meantime, they would prefer to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous deeds than engage in the sort of swordplay that might endanger their precious political futures. And all the while, the people perish under the weight of abject lawlessness and blatant treason.
-----------------------------------------
It does not have to be thus, of course. A stark choice lies before each and every one of us--a choice by which we will be forever judged in the annals of history.

He's a traitor. He's given amnesty to a convicted felon because he lied to save all their necks.
****
Here's the key. Bush has set himself up for impeachment. Now, all we need to prove in a hearing is that Bush was complicit in Libby's actions. If that can be proved, his commutation of the sentence is a high crime. He would be impeached.

Ghouliani thinks Bush made a good call on Libby.
Bush:Libby::Guiliani:Kerick
If "all" Libby did was to lie to FBI agents and a Grand Jury "all" Bernie did was to "house" the coin boxes of vending machines at Rikers and invite the Sammy the Bull wing of the Mafia into Gracie Mansion.
Bush and the Ghoul are cut from the same cloth, the bolt for Bush was from Savile Row, the one for the Ghoul was from John's Bargain Store but in both cases the product was horseshit.

Libby Sentence Commuted: Inexcusable
by Rep Earl Blumenauer [Subscribe]
Mon Jul 02, 2007 at 04:15:53 PM PDT
To say I’m disappointed with the President’s decision to commute Scooter Libby’s felony prison sentence is an understatement.
Rep Earl Blumenauer's diary :: ::
If Paris Hilton served time for her reckless personal behavior, Scooter Libby should serve his time for lying to investigators and engaging in one of the worst cover-ups since Watergate. President Bush’s action today tells America that it’s ok to lie, mislead, and obstruct justice, as long as you are loyal to his Administration.
Instead of commuting and by default sanctioning this obstruction, he should come clean with the American people about his Administration’s role in outing a covert operative for political reasons. After all, the courts, with Libby’s conviction, determined there was a role, and this shameful decision by the President does not change that fact.
It is time for the President and his Administration to stop covering up and stop misleading the American people and representatives in Congress. Instead, it is time to restore some openness and accountability in government, which belongs to all Americans, not just his selected few appointees.

Mr. Blumenauer, it's time for you and the rest of your colleagues in the House to add your name to HRES 333.

gregg, that frosts it for Ghouliani. Needless to say freddy clown also thinks it's a good idea.
This is why I say we don't have to worry much about campaigning at this point. The campaigns will go on while Congress does it's job. Right now, it's job is to sign HRES 333 and begin impeachment hearings on Cheney.

the chimp administration had intelligence (HaHaHaHa) that uncovered the bombing plot in England. They had this information three weeks ago. Our intelligence network is still not working worth a shit or we would have told the British.
I wouldn't be surprised if chimp and cheney withheld this information so a hit would be made so bush can declare himself dictator.
There is also information that we will be hit again around July 4th but cheney has apparently ordered this information classified too so we will be hit and cheney can declare his puppet bush dictator.
bush is already acting like a dictator ignoring the law for his cronies. Remember that he issued a proclamation that the Federal government would take over the whole country if a terrorist hit occurs.
BE ALERT!!!!
STOP BUSH AND CHENEY!!!!!!

STOP BUSH AND CHENEY!!!!!!

Hi John,
Even though I appreciate the expression of outrage from the members of Congress and would be disappointed if they weren't outraged, talk is cheap. We need action. HRES 333, impeachment hearings for Cheney, is on the table. It's time our Reps sign on and start the impeachment process.

How does the GOP really feel about Libby?
by mcjoan

Mark Halperin on The News Hour just said that Bush was playing to his base, that he was making a lot of Republicans happy.
Maybe not so much. Check out this rushed SUSA poll, via TPMCafe:
• 60% say the prison sentence should have been left in place.
• 21% agree with the commutation.
• 17% say Libby should have been pardoned entirely.
The kicker for Bush and the GOP? A high percentage of respondents, relatively, knew about the case--55 percent. More Republicans than one would expect felt the prison sentence should have been kept in place--40 percent, fairly high considering they're GOP. They can kiss independents good-bye again: 56 percent said the commutation was wrong.
****
Well, here's one prediction. Expect to see Chimpy drop another 2-3 percent in the polls. How low can Chimpy go? I am convinced he will break all records for unpopularity right up to his impeachment.

Bill & Hillary:
Worse than you thought & worth remembering, and this came from a Democrat
Dear ( Ex) President Clinton:
I recently saw a bumper sticker that said, "Thank me, I voted for Clinton-Gore." So, I sat down and reflected on that, and I am sending my "Thank you" for what you have done, specifically:
1. Thank you for introducing us to Jennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky, Dolly Kyle Browning, Kathleen Willey, and Juanita Broderick. Did I leave anyone out?
2. Thank you for teaching my 8 year old about oral sex. I had really planned to wait until he was a little older to discuss it with him, but now he knows more about it than I did as a senior in college.
3. Thank you for showing us that sexual harassment in the work place (especially the White House) and on the job is OK, and all you have to know is what the meaning of "it" is. It really is great to know that certain sexual acts are not sex, and one person may have sex while the other one does NOT have sex.
4. Thank you for reintroducing the concept of impeachment to a new generation and demonstrating that the ridiculous plot of the movie "Wag the Dog" could be plausible after all.
5. Thanks for making Jimmy Carter look competent, Gerald Ford look graceful, Richard Nixon look honest, Lyndon Johnson look truthful, and John Kennedy look moral.
6. Thank you for the 73 House and Senate witnesses who have pled the 5th Amendment and 17 witnesses who have fled the country to avoid testifying about Democratic campaign fund raising.
7. Thank you, for the 19 charges, 8 convictions, and 4 imprisonment's from the Whitewater "mess" and the 55 criminal charges and 32 criminal convictions (so far) in the other " Clinton " scandals.
8. Thanks also for reducing our military by half, "gutting" much of our foreign policy, and flying all over the world on "vacations" carefully disguised as necessary trips.
9 Thank you, also, for "finding" millions of dollars (I really didn't need it in the first place, and I can't think of a more deserving group of recipients for my hard-earned tax dollars)
for all of your globe-trotting. I understand you, the family and your cronies have logged in more time aboard Air Force One than any other administration.
10. Now that you've left the White House, thanks for the 140 pardons of convicted felons and indicted felons-in-exile. We will love to have them rejoin society. (Not to mention the scores you pardoned while Governor of Arkansas)
11. Thanks also for removing the White House silverware. I'm sure that Laura Bush didn't like the pattern anyway. Also, enjoy the housewarming gifts you've received from your "friends."
12. Thanks to you and your staff in the West Wing of the White House for vandalizing and destroying government property on the way o
