Voting Machines Can't Stand Up to Hackers

Posted by Stephanie Taylor on July 30, 2007 at 05:42 PM

According to a University of California study that was released on Friday, teams of computer hackers were able to break through the security of virtually every model of California's voting machines, change results, or take at least partial control of the systems' electronic functions.

Matt Bishop, UC Davis computer science professor, who led one of the hacker teams, was interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle:

[Bishop] said he was surprised by the weakness of the security measures, both physical and electronic, protecting the voting systems. His team of hackers found ways to get into the systems not only through the high-tech equipment in election headquarters but also through the machines in the polling places.

If the testers had had more time, they would have found more flaws, he added.

Voting systems across the nation need to be redone and nationalized. There is no reason why votes should be counted differently just because people live in different states. In the next election, I would like to see all people's votes counted equally. On a side note, I'd like to see all the candidates address the United States’ commitment to the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals, which call for cutting world hunger in half by 2015 and eliminating it altogether by 2025. Indeed, it is estimated that the expenditure of a mere $19 billion would eliminate starvation and malnutrition worldwide. In a time when the current defense budget is $522 billion, the goal of eradicating world hunger is clearly well within reach and it is my hope that whoever becomes president in 2008 addresses this pressing issue.

I don`t see why we can`t return to the old way of voting until the next way can be beyond tampering methods. This way of voting through easily hacked machines cannot be allowed to stand. It is too precious a right to be open to power hungry people.

Here in Ohio, we have been trying to tell Democrats this for years!!! They said we were "conspiracy theorists....

Maybe next time someone besides Gov Dean and John Edwards will take this seriously. How can dems expect to win, if the vote can be rigged or hacked?

Let us know how you intend to fix it. Dr. Bob Fitrakis can give you some tips, since he's written many books like "What Happened in Ohio?" the election fraud of 2004.

I believe in our Democrats. They are busy trying to get ahold of the corouption by the Republicans. But I know they will fix the cheaters and put them in their place. Just wait, several of our good House members and Senators will get things fixed so the Republicans will be put in jail that mess with the peoples right to have all their votes counted.

Great post - the more people take the time to learn the issues and understand them, the more two things will become clear:

1) We need an auditable paper trail, ie paper ballots.

2) Keeping our democracy safe and secure is a responsibility that belong to us ALL!

Amen, BamaSlama. Vote stealing seems to be the only thing the Republicans have learned from history.

Honey, Republicans can't win if there is a paper trail. Hackers will work for Republicans because they get Big Money in bribs from K Street. They have learned how to hide their bribe money.

I have to agree that we need some paper.. It is the only way to be sure of what we did.. Maybe a goverment site that we can login to with our social and access our voting record.. Of course that brings up privacy issues.
