From the Congressional Quarterly (no link yet) via MyDD:
Former House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., will not seek re-election next year, GOP sources say. A formal announcement is expected Friday.
MyDD's Jonathan Singer also explains why Hastert's Illinois 14th congressional district is "very winnable" for Democrats.

Yet another criminal heads home free and wealthy.
Hastert has never been held accountable for the money he made slipping a provision to have an interstate built next to land he had just bought, and then profiting from the increase in value of that land.
When will anyone hold these thieves accountable?
His name and Foley's will be forever linked.
That's enough accoutability until we can free the DOJ from GOP political pressure, so it can again do its job properly.
Be patient. Hassert is going home, but he's carrying enough questionaable baggage with him to get into a serious look-see by one of Fizgerald's men in Illinois at a later date.
Democrat or Republican, no politican is safe in Illinois from prosectution if you've been monekying around with the law.
I'm a California Demo and I'm very excited about the unity of all the states Demos in the quest to bring sanity to the political arena in 2008. I would like to call out to all the citizens of this country to take our great country back from the misguided Republicans who keep supporting George Bush and Dick Chaney's quest to alienate and lose the U.S.'s credibility with the rest of the world. Vote For Peace!
Hooray! I can't wait to vote in a Democrat for his seat now that he is gone!
