Cherry-Picking, A Grand Bush Administration Tradition

Posted by Michael Link on September 6, 2007 at 10:14 AM

The Washington Post reports today that -- surprise, surprise -- the data used by Republicans to claim the escalation worked directly contradicts what the experts have been saying.

These numbers are being used by the GOP as political propaganda, and while we expect it from this administration, it simply doesn't match the reality on the ground.

Here are the facts, via the Post:

  • There is "escalating warfare between rival Shiite militias in southern Iraq that has consumed the port city of Basra and resulted last month in the assassination of two southern provincial governors."

  • The AP, according to the Post, "counted 1,809 civilian deaths in August, making it the highest monthly total this year, with 27,564 civilians killed overall since the AP began collecting data in April 2005."

  • The GAO report found that "average number of daily attacks against civilians have remained unchanged from February to July 2007."

Over at Talking Points Memo, Josh Marshall continues the discussion about the Iraq statistics:

Maybe next week they'll stand in front of a "Escalation Accomplished" banner. Declaring success worked so well for them last time.

A report from the Middle East

While the other leading candidates for the Presidency were spending the Labor Day weekend campaigning at picnics, barbeques, state and county fairs, and parading in front of the cameras, YOUR candidate, Dennis Kucinich, without fanfare, was quietly traveling throughout the troubled Middle East in search of real-world solutions to monumental, global challenges.

The votes we cast next year will have an impact here in the United States and around the world, and the candidate we elect must be equipped to make sound foreign policy decisions, based on first hand experience and in-person communications with other world leaders.

So, while other candidates partied and picnicked and posed, Dennis and Elizabeth traveled to a troubled, dangerous region of the world to meet with heads of state and other political leaders to find ways to solve the problems, mitigate the dangers, and find common ground for diplomatic cooperation - and PEACE.

"Strength through Peace" - the Kucinich philosophy - means direct engagement, diplomacy, adherence to international law and upholding treaties. It was in that spirit that Dennis and Elizabeth decided to visit the Middle East; to see whether political and religious leaders as well as the citizens of the region were open to the kind of positive dialogue recommended in the Baker Hamilton report. The kind of dialogue ignored and dismissed by the White House.

The six day trip started in Syria. In the Golan region, they visited the site of the "Shouting Valley" where Syrians whose families were separated by the occupation have to literally shout to each other across a distance of several hundred yards in order to maintain family and personal contact.

Syria has accepted and settled more than one and a half million refugees from Iraq. Dennis and Elizabeth visited an area on the Syrian-Iraqi border, as well as one neighborhood in Damascus where some of the Iraqis had settled. The Syrian government is providing free education and healthcare. "People are desperate," said Dennis. "They have lost loved ones in the war. They have nothing but the clothes on their back. This is a profound humanitarian gesture on the part of this country because it significantly increases the population of Syria. Now, someone must provide for these refugees."

On the second day, there was an extended meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. They discussed a wide range of other matters including building relations between Syria and the United States, the role of the European community in negotiations between Syria and Israel, hopes for a national unity government in Lebanon, matters affecting Pakistan, and Assad's stated desire for a peace agreement with Israel.

Elizabeth met with the President's British-born wife, with whom she shares an interest in community economic development, education and the welfare of refugees.

One of the most moving parts of their trip was a visit to the holy site of Notre Dame de Saydanaya, a revered Christian mecca where legend says the Virgin Mary appeared 1,500 years ago, fully veiled Muslim women worship together with Christians. "In this time of religious strife, it is important to bear witness to places that show the way of peace," Elizabeth observed.

Peace and harmony in the Axis of Evil?? Would that message be seen on American TV? No.

Next, Dennis and Elizabeth visited Lebanon. There, Dennis met with President Emil Lahoud and Prime Minister Fouad Siniora where further discussions centered on resolving the conflict with Israel and issues surrounding stability in Lebanon.

President Lahoud was specific about the challenge of Shiites having resigned from the government: "Lebanon is governed by a consensus on every issue. To have this we must have the three main religious groups represented equally (Shiites, Sunnis and Maronites). When one group leaves, you cannot have a legal government."

And, in what may be a surprise to many here at home, there is a surprisingly large American population in Lebanon. How large? About 50,000, many of them active in "Democrats Abroad Lebanon", a branch of the Democratic Party's official overseas arm. Those U.S. citizens were thrilled to have a chance to meet Dennis and Elizabeth at a special evening meeting, and they used the event to kick-off their plans for getting Americans in the country to vote in Democrats Abroad's delegate selection process to choose delegates to attend the Democratic National Convention next year in Denver.

Lebanon's leading Christian cleric, Cardinal Sfeir, Patriarch of the Maronite Church met with Dennis and Elizabeth. Cardinal Sfier is no stranger to U.S. politics. He has met with George Bush, Dick Cheney and Condaleeza Rice in Washington. As the leader of a large segment of an ethnically and religious diverse nation, he told the Kuciniches, "We have to appreciate living together with persons who are not of our faith and working with them to achieve a common good."

Dennis and Elizabeth also made plans to return to Qana, the site of heavy fighting during last year's war and to participate in a televised 'Town Hall forum' in downtown Beirut with residents of the city.

Dennis, who will be returning to the U.S. in the next few days, summed up the trip this way: "I believe that through direct communication, there is hope for peace. The world is ready to embrace America again. It is important that America reaches out to show our true values, our compassion and our willingness to work for peace."

When he and Elizabeth return, he will provide a more detailed description of their travels and a more comprehensive assessment of his political and diplomatic findings.

Strength through Peace,
Kucinich for President 2008

Judge Strikes Down Parts of Patriot Act
CBS News and The Associated Press

Thursday 06 September 2007

Says law allowing FBI to silence those ordered to turn over private records is unconstitutional.

New York - A federal judge struck down parts of the revised USA Patriot Act as unconstitutional Thursday, saying courts must be allowed to supervise cases where the government orders Internet providers to turn over records without telling customers.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero said the government orders must be subject to meaningful judicial review and that the recently rewritten Patriot Act "offends the fundamental constitutional principles of checks and balances and separation of powers."

The law had been challenged by the American Civil Liberties Union, which complained that the revised law allowed the FBI to demand records without the kind of court order required for other government searches.

The ACLU said it was improper to issue so-called national security letters, or NSLs - investigative tools used by the FBI to compel businesses to turn over customer information - without a judge's order or grand jury subpoena. Examples of such businesses include Internet service providers, telephone companies and public libraries.

"The good news for civil libertarians is that the ruling puts this part of the Patriot Act into doubt," said CBS News legal analyst Andrew Cohen. "The bad news is that the ruling almost certainly will be appealed to more conservative judges and that even if they also say the law goes too far, Congress retains the right to step back in again and tweak the rules.

"The issue is far from a novel one - who gets to decide what companies can say to their customers when the government forces those companies to turn over certain records? Does a judge get to decide or do federal law enforcement agents? It's a question that has been debated since before 9/11," Cohen said.

Jameel Jaffer, who argued the case for the ACLU, said, "We're very pleased with the decision."

He said the revised law had wrongly given the FBI sweeping authority to control speech because the agency was allowed to decide on its own - without court review - whether a company receiving an NSL had to remain silent or whether it could reveal to its customers that it was turning over records.

Yusill Scribner, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office, said the government had no immediate comment on the ruling.

In 2004, ruling on the initial version of the Patriot Act, the judge said the letters violate the Constitution because they amounted to unreasonable search and seizure. He found that the nondisclosure requirement - under which an Internet service provider, for instance, would not be allowed to tell customers that it was turning over their records to the government - violated free speech.

After he ruled, Congress revised the Patriot Act in 2005, and the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals directed that Marrero review the law's constitutionality a second time.

Marrero originally ruled in a case pertaining to an unidentified Internet service provider that received one of the letters, in which the FBI claimed that phone or Internet records were "relevant to an authorized investigation to protect against international terrorism or clandestine intelligence activities."

The ACLU complained that Congress' revision of the NSL law didn't go far enough to protect people because the government could still order companies to turn over their records, and remain silent about it, if the FBI determined that the case involved national security.

The judge said the way the law was written "reflects an attempt by Congress and the executive to infringe upon the judiciary's designated role under the Constitution."

He added: "It is axiomatic that in our system of government it is the province of the courts to say what the law is. When Congress attempts to curtail or supersede this role, it jeopardizes the delicate balance of powers among the three branches of government and endangers the very foundations of our constitutional system."

The BUSH administration is illegally using government offices to politically propagandize religion as a means to win Christians to vote for the REPUBLICAN EXTREME.

The Bush administration keeps proselytizing as a means to make the LEFT Wing protest so that the LEFT Wing will appear ungodly, as if they are protesting against GOD, when they are not.

Biblically whatever is declared legal on this earth is declared legal in Heaven, and the BUSH administration disobeying the laws is an ungodly act. RIGHT WING proselytizing should not be done in the work place, except during breaks or off the property. Freedom of speech must be allowed for all, but this is strictly a RIGHT WING propaganda religious political play to propagandize religious people who do not want to think about the situation, just want to believe that the RIGHT WING BUSH administration is godly. What the BUSH administration is actually doing is an ungodly use of religion to promote their EXTREME RIGHT WING agenda, similar to what Hitler did in Germany. It is disgraceful how low this BUSH administration will stoop to get their way.

Bush Appointee Campaigns for Evangelicals

The head of the U.S. federal government agency that doles out benefits to disabled veterans is under fire for saying Bible study is “more important than doing [my] job.”
by Aaron Glantz

SAN FRANCISCO - Two organisations, Veterans for Common Sense (VCS) and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), demanded an investigation Tuesday of Daniel Cooper, President George W. Bush’s undersecretary for benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs.Their complaint stems from an appearance Cooper made in a fundraising video for the evangelical group Christian Embassy, which carries out missionary work among the Washington elite as part of the Campus Crusade for Christ.

************************************

Rove admitted he is an atheist and I expect there are quite a few atheists in the RIGHT WING EXTREME BUSH administration exploiting Christianity for their political benefit.

IMHO, complaining about the BUSH administration only makes the LEFT appear ungodly, although what the BUSH administration is doing is illegal, if the BUSH administration chooses to publicly proselytize, then the LEFT should proselytize as well. There should be religious meeting all over based on the BUSH administration's proselytizing. Let the LORD reign on the LEFT because the LORD definitely doesn't reign on the RIGHT and we do not want the Christian people of the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION to become confused and believe the EXTREME RIGHT WING'S Christianity propaganda.

What elects REPUBLICANS to political office?

Trained lumpen-proletariat monkeys parroting REPUBLICAN "confidence without merit dialectic" taught to them in church by theocratic monarchists of the Evangelical Christian Movement preaching from the pulpit that the "unworthy poor" must support the "worthy wealthy" in order to become worthy of the opportunity to become wealthy; can you believe that anyone would be ignorant or stupid enough to go along with a story like that?

The answer is unfortunately that there are many uneducated, disadvantaged people that did indeed succumb to such a story and will continue to succumb to the same story preached to them in their churches; they voted for Reagan, Bush Daddy and Baby Bush; if the church is going to politically abuse their religious franchise in this manner, all churches who do abuse should be taxed as political institutions rather than religious institutions.

*******PROACTIVE DIALECTIC FOR THE COMMON POPULATION*******

The LEFT, the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION, must develop a program of proactive dialectic and QUIT being reactive to the dialectic of the RIGHT.

The LEFT must learn to push its own dialectic program and QUIT being reactive to the dialectic of the RIGHT.

In the Dialectic War between the LEFT and the RIGHT, between Democrats and REPUBLICANS, those who respond in defense of opposing dialectic make themselves LOSERS; those who take the OFFENSIVE with proactive dialectic that forces the opposition to respond make themselves WINNERS by the assertion of their will and their willingness to struggle for what they believe in.

Those who are without a dialectic program to struggle for and are only concerned with reaction to the dialectic of the opposition are LOSERS from the beginning, because they are not struggling for a cause greater than their own self interest and greed in the moment; those who represent only their own greedy self interest without a dialectic program representing a struggle for the greater good of their constituents will not prevail and do not deserve to prevail politically; this is the position represented by DLC Democrats, and this is why COMMON POPULATION DEMOCRATS must develop dialectic for their political struggle, and have the will to execute their own dialectic in their own greater good in a proactive rather than a reactive manner.
