Richardson and Dodd were equally a yawn.

I love the come backs when they are good. So far Biden was the one who did that the most and the best imo........ Hillary pulled off a couple last night but the others tanked in the candor dept.

Even Dennis got hung up when TIM questioned him about bankrupting the City when he was Mayor (something I never knew) he's not as perfect as some make him out to be.

jmo. and I'm sorry I'm at odds with most here but I just can't stand it when a man whines and crys aloud "but look at what I DID, look at what I DID" like we haven't done that already? I hate when they brag. I know they're supposed to....... still bugs me.

I don't want them to DICTATE to ME how I should feel about them. No matter what GREAT things they THINK they've done. That's all. I'll take humble confidence over blatant EGO any day. For President.

I wanted to reprint this, because I think DPD made a very valid point. My apologies to those who have already read it on the last thread.

Posted by DPD on September 27, 2007 at 05:57 PM

If our lawmakers aren't going to vote to bring them home or even give them a reasonable amount of time between deployments....we will eventually have to just leave them there.

It's the most craven of hypocrisy to move people back and forth like some sort of toy soldiers and say you support them and their families. Are those who say we must stay until the "job is done" willing to give up on this charade and face the cold, hard facts of what staying in Iraq for another decade or two really means?

To maintain the current level of dysfunctional status quo we must continue the presence of more than 100,000 troops.

If there is no military draft instituted or none of the Romneys and Limbaughs of this world are willing to sacrifice their sons and daughters to the cause...Congress will eventually have to save money by leaving our troops there indefinitely and try the best they can to ignore the burden they are asking them to bear.

Love them and leave them? That's where this is going....fast.

I'm betting that the good, decent people of this nation will not go along with this cruel and inhuman Republican lie.

SandyH on September 27, 2007 at 06:37 PM

I didn't hear ONE Democrat say last night that they would keep 100K troops in Iraq.

They all had to be honest and say they couldn't PROMISE to have them all home by their terms in office. I totally understand that. Being honest. Some I think will bring them home sooner than others but I think they ALL will bring them out. Sooner rather than later.

I also think it's a long time until then and I DO have faith in our Congress and that they will continue to hammer and vote until they finally get the last of the SMUGPUG to either vote with them or NOT vote.

Dawn,

I think it was you who said something about eight debates being enough. I thought that way, too, after I quit watching them a few debates back.

Then I watched again last night and I was truly surprised. Maybe it's because we are finally getting closer to the primary season or that the candidates have finally decided it's time to start making their moves, but it wasn't as boring as usual.

I sure wish we could get the process down to some one-on-one debates. Maybe Biden versus Edwards? Gravel versus Clinton? Obma versus Richardson? I'd really like to give each of the candidates time to explain their views instead of limiting them to 30 second sound bites.

When you think about it, you'd almost have to be a egoist to go into politics. If you aren't sure you are right, it would show. Maybe that's why all three of the top tier looked so weak last night and Biden and Richardson didn't.

SandyH on September 27, 2007 at 06:57 PM

Fellow Democrats, as the holidays draw closer, the interest in the primaries will expand. People, of all political persuasions, may come here to see what we have to offer. I know I did back in the winter of 2003 when all the polls indicated that Howard Dean was well on his way to being our nominee. That being said, what I want to address is our rhetoric.

I'm sure there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people that come here every day and do nothing but lurk. Some, if not most, may think we bloggers are actually affilliated with the DNC in some official capacity. Of course, we're not as indicated by the disclaimer at the bottom of each thread's page. However, perception is everything in election season. I would respectfully recommend that we all be mindful of that especially as we get closer to the primaries, the convention, and the general election.

Please do not take this as an attempt to quell dissension. Quite the contrary, our debates here are important to the body politic. However, I would ask that we think a minute before we click the "Post" button. What I think about is did I get my point across without being nasty about it? Did I really have to refer to the President of the United States as a chimp, idiot, or some other deragotory term though some, if not all, of those adjectives are applicable considering the current resident of the Oval Office? Is having "F**K You", or something equivalent, in a post really necessary? More often than not I think we'd all agree the answer is no.

Therefore, I'd ask my fellow Democrats to please be mindful of your rhetoric. Let's at least try to take the high road through the debates that will rage this long election season. There will be trolls who try to drag us down to their level. Don't fall for it. They're here just to create problems and try to make us look bad. Our webmaster(s) can make short work of them. When the legitimate members of the loyal opposition come here though, how about a modicum of respect as long as one is given? The "sheeple" are tired of all the bickering. That is why I believe that Sen. Clinton's (D-NY) various state and national leads will not hold up come primary election
day(s).

In closing, I've had the honor and privilege of posting here for almost four years now. I am not perfect in fact, I'm far from it as I've let my temper get the best of me in this forum as have all of us. I know we're better than that. I know we're smarter than that. Let's go prove it to the world after all, they're watching.

Good night fellow Democrats. Keep the Faith and keep the faith. The liberal revolution is now.

I like Richardson.
he has experience.
he's a manly man.
I like Gravel.
he's nutty.
I like Kucinich.
he's a liberal.
so many people base thier choice on looks.
ok...who is the best looking?
Obama?
Edwards?
is Biden handsome?
well, Dodd isn't going to win in this department.
who has the biggest balls? we all know the amswer to that one. she sent me an email saying that I could sit on the couch with Bill and watch the next debate. do you think he would hit on me? do you think he's hot? do you think hillary peddles him at every waking moment? I do. she will sell him every chance she gets. do you think those 2 brilliant one liners were planned? I do.

13
Sadie on September 27, 2007 at 07:05 PM

I still think Howard is the best choice for Prez.
he said on matthews he wasn't running in 2008.
but he might run in the future. he could run as vice to Gore in 2008. he would have run the party and kept his promise to not run for Prez. 16 years of Dean. the world might not go down in a fiery blaze like the path we are on right now.

The "utter slaughter of civilians" as you put it, happens every day in Iraq. It will be nothing new to them. They are quite literally dying to have their civil war. And once the civil war is over, who will be in charge of Iraq? The answer is the Iraqis. Who does President Bush say he wants in charge of Iraq so our troops can come home? Again, it is the Iraqis.

Whether we stay another six months, which is the shortest amount of time we could get 170K troops and equipment out of Iraq, or another 55 years as we've done on the DMZ of Korea, the Iraqis will have their civil war. Do we really need to be there for that? Of course not. We have a war on terror to fight; not an Iraqi civil war.

There is one thing we agree on. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes. On that point, there can be no arguement.

Political history is largely an account of mass violence and of the expenditure of vast resources to cope with mythical fears and hopes.

I would

He's the best President in my memory (other than Carter). I don't think he's hot. A lot of women do. What ever.

I like her

I didn't used to

I do now

I think it's too bad so many refuse to give her half a chance or believe only what the msm says. I've looked at her years in the Senate voting record and it's totally liberal.

I'm not worried about her. Less worried about her maybe than I would any one else. Except maybe Biden or Richardson

It's too bad AL didn't decide to try it again.

dammit

Lose? Have you taken even a second to look at what the people of Iraq have lost? The same people who never, ever wished us ill will? The same people who had nothing to do with 9/11?

What is it that you think is left in Iraq that is worth winning? We've lost our national honor, our Constitutional liberties, and the respect of our miliary personnel who look to us for help in saving the strength of their institution....it's dying. Maybe you haven't been listening to the top brass?

It's not ours to win or lose. Bush lost it long ago...all by himself.

So what's your point?

My brother-in-law was sharing a hospital room with a kid who was shot in the head because he either was in the wrong place at the wrong time or he was shooting, too.

If these kids ever had an equal opportunity to rise above the conditions they were born into (which is a fat chance in the brave new world of free trade outsourcing/illegal hirings), maybe they would spend their time striving to better themselves rather than going out in a blaze of gunfire?

Hope is a real scarce commodity is most urban areas todays especially in the browning cities of the Midwest and Northeast. And from the looks of all that meth dealing in America's rural areas, things aren't going so great there either.

Don't want to give the kiddies crayons? How about giving them a good-paying job with medical benefits and see what they can achieve?

The reason the Mayor doesn't have any money for those police officers is because Bush gave it to the top 2% of his rich cronies instead.

It's time to fix dinner. bbl

You can picture Wiley's nasty grin as he lights the fuse to yet another rocket powered Acme skate-board, and Osama's nonchalance as he adroitly sidesteps with Wiley shooting past off the edge of the mesa, stopping in midair, looking down, astounded, then frightened, then resigned, and falling, spread-eagaled, an impossible distance as Osama leans over to watch the little puff of dust when he lands, and we pan down to see him at the bottom of a deep Wiley-shaped hole dug on impact. "Meep-meep," Osama says and spins off. We need a new cartoon.

Sandy,

see this is the problem with these small minded people who get their news from Limbaugh! They think there is a Win/Lose in an Occupation! they do not know what an occupation means. They do not understand that the fighting is Shias vs Sunnis for CONTROL of the freaken country, and if they can blow up some americans too, to get them out of their country, that is Gravy to them!

These guys think there is going to be some kind of "VICTORY" or Win!

Even their great leader, Bush has stopped saying there will be a victory! Notice every speech now, by him or his Press secretary says 'sucess', not victory!

But these idiots can't get that through their heads. Now if Limbaugh tells them don't say Victory anymore, call it a sucess, THEN they will do it.

I think if someone went and started asking around they would come up with as many plans as there is Generals.

All the generals have been either asked or offered their opinions. And we haven't heard one single alternative plan. All we hear is that we cannot sustain the present level.

There is no magic bullet, no counter-insurgency plan that will get us out of the present predicament. We are over-extended, under-manned and bankrupt. The Chinese are not going to bolster your dreams of glory forever.

Either we take steps to save our military or we will become prey for others that are stronger.
Just what is it that you don't get about this?

Do you think God is going to intervene? Why wouldn't He intervene on the side of sanity?

We have out stayed any welcome we might have ever gotten. When the flowers and candy didn't materialize but the looting and civil war did, it was all over.

You're stubborn support of a mad man just because he's the best you have, isn't going to result in anything but humiliation and despair...for you. This will end the way all mistakes do.

Posted by BobVADemHawk-Biden-Obama2008 on September 27, 2007 at 07:10 PM

What a marvelous quote, Bob. Those who wish to "see it through" in Iraq have the mythical hope that our presence will make a difference to the final outcome. Their mythical fear is that if we leave there will be wholesale murder. Of course, nobody can know in advance which scenario might approximate reality. Just as it's easy to say now that staying in Vietnam longer would have prevented "people hanging from helicopters," it's easy to predict disastrous outcomes in Iraq if we leave. We don't have a model where we stayed in a country that did not want us there and succeeded in quelling dissent, so it's impossible to add any empirical evidence to support these hopes and fears. Good intentions don't really decide the issue. They just become part of the myth.

Thank you for the somewhat civil response. Let's carry this a bit further.

...the average civilian in Iraq wants to live their life without sectarian violence. They are dying because insurgents and those behind them are setting off bombs in schools, religious shrines, markets... without regard to innocents...

Who is left in Iraq that can be defined as an "average civilian"? The upper and middle classes have fleed leaving the rest to fend for themselves. Why do you think they can't raise a viable army and police force in Iraq? Sunnis are bombing Shia, Shias are bombing Sunnis, and Al-Qaeda are bombing everyone. If Al-Qaeda accounts for 5% of the violence, which I've heard, and the insurgents the rest, again, who is the "average civilian"? The insurgents, by their very definition are resisting what they perceive as our occupation. End the occupation and you end the insurgency.

...The correct answer is Iran. They are funding, supplying and directing the Shiites in a civil war against the Sunnis. The ultimate goal is to take control of Iraq and dominate the region.

On this point, we agree. Iran, seeing us bogged down in Iraq, has become emboldened and must be put back into check. However, what is the solution. Do we declare war on Iran now? If so, for what reason? Because they're PO'd because we are there? They see themselves with us on both sides of their sovreign nation. If the Soviet Union and/or the Communists had taken over Mexico and Canada during the cold war, would the cold war have stayed cold? Of course not. We'd kicked their red butts or died trying.

Let the "doves" have their chance at diplomacy. Iran is not the threat now that this administration is making it out to be. It may be one day soon but, not now.

What do you think Korea would look like now if the North hadn't been held at the 38th Parallel? Would it resemble what we now see in the South or the North?

Odds are that a unified Korea would resemble the Communist North. IMHO, and others such as Pat Buchanan, we should be out of Korea as well. Let the Chinese deal with that problem. It's in their backyard, not ours. The resources to support roughly 40K troops over the past 55 years has been staggering. Before we leave, we make it clear to Kim Jong Il that if one single N. Korean crosses the border we'll sit a few dozen kilometers offshore and "pushbutton" him into non-existence.

I'm confident that ADM Fallon would love to have another 40K troops at his disposal in Afghanistan to finally crush the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. They're the ones responsible for 11SEP01, not Iraq.

The base of the terrorists is the Middle East. Hiding from that fact within our borders will only buy but a little time at best. If we are to engage the enemy. we must do it on their ground.

We agree that it is preferable to engage the enemy on their ground. More often than not, the best defense is a good offense. We are in Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and probably a few other places that I've forgotten. And that doesn't even take into account the twelve or thirteen active carrier battle groups we have at our disposal. Couple that with the most advanced air, space, and rocket forces of human history and that will beg the question, "Is it really necessary, or feasible for that matter, to have manned bases in every single nation throughout the Middle East?" I think not.

Let's use those forces where they are needed most, American border security. Not only will we fight the terrorists over there, but we can do it here as well. In the dangerous world of the 21st century, the time for "Fortress America" is now. Some on my side of the aisle will disagree with that. I respect their opinions though I disagree with them on this. Your side of the aisle had over five years from 11SEP01 to secure the borders. Heckuva job, Mr. President, heckuva job.

I agree with Sen. Biden's (D-DE) plan for Iraq. It can found here: http://www.joebiden.com/issues/?id=0009.

Also, by clicking my handle in this post, you'll be directed to the Joe Biden for President web page. Whether you end up supporting the senior senator for president or not, it is worth the time to read his proposal.

And don't count Sen. Biden out yet. While he is polling at less than 5% in most polls, I remind you that Sen. Kerry (D-MA) was polling around 3% during Christmas of 2003. It ain't over 'til its over.

OK, let's try this one more time.

Again, good night fellow Democrats. Keep the Faith and keep the faith. The liberal revolution is now.

BobVADemHawk-Biden-Obama2008 on September 27, 2007 at 09:40 PM

"You all have been screaming "GET OUT, GET OUT" without regard to the utter slaughter that awaits the civilians when we leave."

By my count, we have already won this war. Defeated the Iraqi army? Done. Overthrown the Baathist dictatorship? Done. Eliminated the "threat" of Weapons of Mass Destruction? Done. Captured Saddam? Done. Established a democratic government? Done and done.

While some people want to use our troops as peacekeepers, we have to recognize that the military has fulfilled its mission. This democratic government ultimately belongs to the Iraqi people. If they want to keep it, they will have to stand up and fight for it. If they don't want to keep it, no amount of American military commitment can save it from its inevitable demise.

The future of Iraq will not be decided by the politicians in Washington, DC. It will be decided by the common people of Iraq. For better or for worse, it is their democracy and they will decide its fate. Our mission is complete-- it's time to let the Iraqi's begin their mission of preserving their government.

And you're correct, the monitors of this blog will decide what's appropriate and what's not. But so will all the people who read what we have to say here. The myth lost its luster as soon as the looting started. It became something entirely inhuman the minute those phtotos of Abu Graibe showed up.
Myth became nightmare and those that created the nightmare refuse to admit their responsibility.

This isn't about Iraq anymore. It's about the fear of God. Unless the GOP can "win" something, they will have to face the consequences with their Maker. They have to avoid that Judgment Day at all costs.

this child health care bill is great stuff. the democrats have bush swallowing his own tail:

Showdown Looms as Child Health Bill Passes
Many GOP Senators Back Measure Bush Vows to Veto

By Jonathan Weisman and Christopher Lee
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, September 28, 2007; Page A01

The Senate, with an overwhelming bipartisan vote yesterday, sent President Bush a $35 billion expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, setting up the biggest domestic policy clash of his presidency and launching a fight that will reverberate into the 2008 elections.

Bush has vowed to veto the measure, but he has faced strong criticism from many fellow Republicans reluctant to turn away from a popular measure that would renew and expand an effective program aimed at low-income children. Democratic leaders, while still as many as two dozen votes short in the House, are campaigning hard for the first override of Bush's presidency.

They secured a veto-proof majority last night in the Senate, with the 67 to 29 tally including "yes" votes from 18 of the 49 Republicans, including some of the president's most stalwart allies, such as Christopher S. Bond (Mo.), Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.) and Ted Stevens (R-Alaska). Democratic leaders are likely to send the measure to the White House next week, allowing advocates a few more days to pressure Bush to sign it.

For Republicans, the issue is politically perilous. Every Senate Republican facing a difficult reelection bid bolted from Bush yesterday. Most House Republicans in swing districts abandoned him Tuesday when the House approved the bill 265 to 159...

MARIETTA, Ga. Gingrich chose Thursday, the 13th anniversary of the signing of his "Contract With America," to launch his "Solutions Day" campaign, which he said is a search for bi-partisan answers to the country's major challenges...

Thompson Unaware of Death Penalty Cases
By ERIK SCHELZIG Associated Press Writer

Sep 27th, 2007 | FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson said Thursday he was unaware that a federal judge had ruled last week that lethal injection procedures in his home state were unconstitutional.

Thompson also told reporters that he was unaware the U.S. Supreme Court this week had agreed to consider a Kentucky case about whether lethal injection violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

It seems posting here is getting harder and new pop ups come up requesting to send info to McAfee. I had to quit using Internet Explorer because it quit letting me post here, now Mozilla Firefox has been coming up with pop up's and errors. Soon it too will be giving me Bush Freedom and Democracy. Already people send me Microsoft emails that do not get delivered, they tell me and I say I did not get them. The Chinese Microsoft filters are doing their job quite well, as a Patriot Act of censorship. I still will pray for a politician willing to give our countey back its true blue Constitutional Freedom and Democracy, not a corporate puppet.

Constitutional Freedom and Democracy of Free Speech. Having been banned and terminated for Free Speech, my faith lies in the faith of the Constitution. My email is davelyoung1@hotmail.com, try to send me something and see if it gets filtered. I so miss the Ben Franklin Post Office that guaranteed delivery, today we get Cheney snail email delays and dead email letters for Patriot Act Bush results. I pray for those Deep Throat patriots, who will like WaterGate reveal to the American public the abuse of Presidential power. Congress try to investigate the White House you will fail your duty for every email in Congress is on the NSA agenda, as well as the media. (Make it illegal to sky on Congressional and the media's emails)The cell phones, and other way of communicating monitored by a Patriot Act that today we have lost our patriot civil liberties, and like slave we have a new master with a corporate face.

McAfee new popup on web broswers:
"McAfee SiteAdvisor has a new privacy policy. The change allows our software to send a unique, anonymous number to McAfee SiteAdvisor which helps us know our software is functioning correctly. As always, we never store personally identifiable information or any information about what you do online.

For more information on how we protect your privacy, see our privacy policy at http://www.siteadvisor.com/privacypolicy.html."

Oh Bush Freedom and Democracy it starting to be as suppressive as Myanmar.

It seems with Microsoft email and filters, Blackwater security, and White House Executive Privilege, we do not need no Congress any more because they have quit doing their Constitutional mandated homework of protecting our civilians. Soon, we will be like Myanmar monks of patriotism asking for Freedom back. The Bush Wars will be costly for the Army of the Potomac.

It seems the more I write the more Microsoft Word shuts down suddenly, where I lose my words, I have to save often and quit relying on the automatic saving feature. I try recovering Microsoft files that now Microsoft Word now refuses to open. Also the search feature of Vista is so bad you cannot search your hard drive for a tern any more. It seems Microsoft has become the world's Big Brother. Congress should check it out for coordinated program of White House civilian at home surveillance, they are the Watergate plumbers of today's White House.

With Bush every three words of Freedom His Democracy will take back one, so just as you reach the peak, Microsoft is there to shut you down. But the more you write, the more you fall, but to give up says the Constitution and its founders were not worth their blood that they sacrificed for US. In God Bless America I will die in a religion of a free race of people that never loses its faith by becoming Golder Idol followers, our nation comes from human hearts of compassion not Katrina failed promises of Hollywood Political Production of lies. Yes, my words will stop soon but even in the grave I pledge allegiance to our founding fathers, Give me Liberty (Liberal) or give me death.

The older I get, the more I look like Ben Franklin and the more I thank God to resemble a patriot so proud that it could have been I looked more like a Bush and Cheney Corporate Royalist that would require major re-constructive plastic Jeffersonian surgery. I know have Bush hair refusing to cut as a true patriot haircut that after he is gone and I pray we have a real people leader it will be cut for kids that need w(h)igs.

My Vietnam rants how Bush has reincarnated those abuses.

NBC debate moderators can't get past Edwards haircut story, despite acknowledgment it's "silly"

During the September 26 Democratic presidential debate at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, moderator and NBC News Washington bureau chief Tim Russert asked former Sen. John Edwards (D-NC): "Your campaign has hit some obstacles with revelations about $400 haircuts, half-million dollars working for a hedge fund, $800,000 from Rupert Murdoch. Do you wish you hadn't taken money in all those cases or hadn't made that kind of expenditure for a haircut?" Russert's question about Edwards' haircuts marks the second time a moderator from NBC News has asked about the topic during a debate since the story "broke" in April.
As Media Matters for America noted, NBC's Nightly News anchor Brian Williams asked Edwards about the haircuts during an April 26 debate, despite having acknowledged three days earlier that the story was "silly."

Politico senior political writer Ben Smith first highlighted Edwards' haircuts in an April 16 blog entry. A July 17 post on NBC News' First Read blog -- an analysis of the day's political news, from the NBC News political unit -- advised readers to "look for Edwards supporters to use this as a test to see if the MSM covers [Republican presidential candidate Mitt] Romney as harshly as Edwards was." However, as Media Matters documented, NBC seized on the Edwards story but completely ignored disclosures that Romney's presidential campaign spent $300 on makeup.

From MSNBC's 9 p.m. ET broadcast of the September 26 debate:

RUSSERT: Sen. Edwards, you mentioned candor with the candidate -- a president -- with the American people. Your campaign has hit some obstacles with revelations about $400 haircuts, half-million dollars working for a hedge fund, $800,000 from Rupert Murdoch. Do you wish you hadn't taken money in all those cases or hadn't made that kind of expenditure for a haircut?

EDWARDS: Well, first of all, I think if you look at my entire life, I am proud of what I've spent my life doing. I'm not perfect. There's not a single person on this stage who's perfect. But I came from a family -- I was born into nothing. I was brought home to a two-room house in a mill village. I have spent my entire life fighting for the kind of people that I grew up with, that worked in a mill with my father, and I don't apologize for the fact that I've worked hard and built a life, which I hope will make life easier for my children. I'm proud of that. I'm not ashamed of that.

And I'm proud of having stood up for the people that I grew up with. It's what I have done my entire life. I did it for 20 years as a lawyer; it's what I've done every minute that I've been in public life. It is the reason that I've been walking -- going around the country helping organize workers into unions. It is the reason we started a college-for-everyone program for low-income kids. It is the reason Elizabeth and I started an after-school program for kids who otherwise would have no chance to go to an after-school program, having access to technology. I'm proud of what I've done from -- with my life, and I do not apologize for it.

I really like Richardson's credentials but don't think he comes across all that well in this forum, which really doesn't matter to me. Our president should not be a TV or Movie Star (sorry Fred). I think that "one on one" debates between the candidates would give us a better picture of the candidates. I really like Edwards, too, but he doesn't do anything for me in these large debates. Maybe I just have a hard time with MSM.

Limbaugh: Service members who support U.S. withdrawal are "phony soldiers"

Summary:

During the September 26 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh called service members who advocate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq "phony soldiers." He made the comment while discussing with a caller a conversation he had with a previous caller, "Mike from Chicago," who said he "used to be military," and "believe[s] that we should pull out of Iraq."

Limbaugh told the second caller, whom he identified as "Mike, this one from Olympia, Washington," that "[t]here's a lot" that people who favor U.S. withdrawal "don't understand" and that when asked why the United States should pull out, their only answer is, " 'Well, we just gotta bring the troops home.' ... 'Save the -- keeps the troops safe' or whatever," adding, "[I]t's not possible, intellectually, to follow these people." "Mike" from Olympia replied, "No, it's not, and what's really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media." Limbaugh interjected, "The phony soldiers." The caller, who had earlier said, "I am a serving American military, in the Army," agreed, replying, "The phony soldiers."

On August 19, The New York Times published an op-ed by seven members of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division. They ended their assessment of the situation in Iraq with the following passage:

In a lawless environment where men with guns rule the streets, engaging in the banalities of life has become a death-defying act. Four years into our occupation, we have failed on every promise, while we have substituted Baath Party tyranny with a tyranny of Islamist, militia and criminal violence. When the primary preoccupation of average Iraqis is when and how they are likely to be killed, we can hardly feel smug as we hand out care packages. As an Iraqi man told us a few days ago with deep resignation, "We need security, not free food."

In the end, we need to recognize that our presence may have released Iraqis from the grip of a tyrant, but that it has also robbed them of their self-respect. They will soon realize that the best way to regain dignity is to call us what we are -- an army of occupation -- and force our withdrawal.

Until that happens, it would be prudent for us to increasingly let Iraqis take center stage in all matters, to come up with a nuanced policy in which we assist them from the margins but let them resolve their differences as they see fit. This suggestion is not meant to be defeatist, but rather to highlight our pursuit of incompatible policies to absurd ends without recognizing the incongruities.

We need not talk about our morale. As committed soldiers, we will see this mission through.

On September 12, The New York Times noted: "Two of the soldiers who wrote of their pessimism about the war in an Op-Ed article that appeared in The New York Times on Aug. 19 were killed in Baghdad on Monday."

As Media Matters for America has documented, Limbaugh denounced as "contemptible" and "indecent" MoveOn.org's much-discussed advertisement -- titled "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?" -- critical of Gen. David Petraeus, but has repeatedly attacked the patriotism of those with whom he disagrees. For instance, on the January 25 broadcast of his radio show, he told his audience that he had a new name for Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), a Vietnam veteran: "Senator Betrayus." A day earlier, Hagel had sided with Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in voting to approve a nonbinding resolution declaring that President Bush's escalation in Iraq was against "the national interest." Additionally, on August 21, 2006, Limbaugh said: "I want to respectfully disagree with the president on the last part of what he said. I am going to challenge the patriotism of people who disagree with him because the people that disagree with him want to lose."

As Media Matters has also documented, on the August 2, 2005, program, Limbaugh repeatedly referred to Iraq war veteran and then-Democratic congressional candidate Paul Hackett as "another liberal Democrat trying to hide behind a military uniform" and accused him of going to Iraq "to pad the resumé." On the day of Limbaugh's comments, Hackett narrowly lost a special election to Republican Jean Schmidt for Ohio's 2nd Congressional District seat.

Good morning Gregg, Cyn, and Esmerelda.

What's the best 3 slogans for the Republican '08 Convention in Minneapolis?

3. "NO MORE SECRET DEALS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS!"

2. NO MORE FREE HAND-OUTS to the airline industry!

1. Show your conservative compassion: Give a brother a hand.

cyn, i am taking the mindless position that whichever candidate the democrats win i will stongly support so instead of watching all these debates i can focus on the yankees and pre thompson law and order re-runs.

Big Dog, that last one kind of reminds me of Sen. Larry Craig. And, since repugs are such perves, I vote for No. 1.

Good morning Bigdog, Gregg, Cyn, and Esmerelda,

There's a new front sweeping through New Mexico and it is windy and 53 degrees.

gregg, Hope your weather warning doesn't result in another nasty storm.

Gregg, me, too. I will support the candidate. And, GO Yankees! Funny you should say that about Law and Order. I am addicted to the re-runs and find myself scrutinizing Thompson.

"Tavis Smiley, the television host who moderated both PBS forums, said at the outset: “Some of the campaigns who declined our invitations to join us tonight have suggested publicly that this audience would be hostile and unreceptive. Since we are live on PBS right now, I can’t tell you what I really think of these kinds of comments.”"

so the top four bozo pelican candidates skipped the debate held at morgan state that was to focus on the concerns of minority voters. i think the best person to explain their absence would be that master of intercultural affairs, that beacon of multi-cultural hope, that courageous pioneer who braved the pork chops and baked beans up at slyvia's......thats right...bill o'liely!!!

Big dog,

Hannity is just as bad as limpbaugh.

Yesterday he was saying that we just have to bring back ray-gun values.

I heard on the radio news the other day that a border patrol vehicle was stolen recently and they found it in Mexico. The border patrol is really observant when someone can steal a car from right under their noses. No wonder they don't catch these people.

I also heard that 25 people have died crossing the border in the last week or so. The latest was a woman swimming across an irrigation canal in El Paso.

LONDON (Reuters) - The probability of a recession in the United States has increased but is still less than 50/50, former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said in comments broadcast on Friday.

...greenspan is such a sack of excrement...a few weeks ago he was saying a recession was a one in three chance...is he handicapping the baseball playoffs next or what?

from the weird factoids department that are only of interest to gregg....greenspam is a big ayn rand fan..."the fountainhead" formed his world view, god help us...and the construction company that was responsible for the building that those nyc firefighters were killed in last month was the john galt corporation:

Morning Buzz: Behind Ground Zero Demolition Work, a Little-Known Company With Problems

By Sewell Chan

In a front-page article, Charles V. Bagli, David W. Dunlap and William K. Rashbaum reveal that the John Galt Corporation, the subcontractor hired last year to demolish the former Deutsche Bank building at 130 Liberty Street, is “not much more than a corporate entity meant to accommodate the people and companies actually doing the demolition job.”

so ayn is still out there in the ether inspiring the greedy to rip off the needy...

morning all,

reading some interesting things this morning.

Remember the outrage over those 4 US Contractors in Iraq back in 2004, who were dragged through the streets and hung up over the bridge. Gads, the Republicans used those pictures to whet the appetite of their simple minded base to kill any and all Iraqis they could.

Wellllll, seems today, an article by McClatchy Newspapers has found out those 4 Blackwater employees died because of Blackwater's Rushed unprepared into a sloppy mission, skimped on security to save money and stonewalled when congress tried to investigate!!!

So those deaths were all Blackwater's fault. They took a convoy through a very hostile territory after being warned not to, sent its men out short staffed. After the incident, many Blackwater personnel gave statements describing Blackwater's Baghdad operation as chaotic and lacking qualified workers.

So Republicans, re-direct your anger to Blackwater who caused those men to be captured and tortured !

Mychal Bell is released on bond. Good news, though the prosecutor is still continues to show the world he's a bigot stating that there was no violence at the gathered protest last week because "Jesus" intervened.

Jesus, huh?? Hmm.................he who has spoken him definitely needs him the most.

Since Black folk can't seem to gather in a civilized manner as he would think, let him continue in his backward ignorance.

All in reality

DNC Calls on Rudy Giuliani to Come Clean on Ties to Right-Wing Power Grab Initiative in California

Rudy Has Yet To Disavow Ties to Shady Financial Backers of Front Group

Washington, DC - The Democratic National Committee today called on Rudy Giuliani to explain his ties to "Take Initiative America," a shadowy front group financing the effort to rig the Electoral College in California for the 2008 presidential elections. Giuliani campaigns in the state today after news reports show that financial backers of the front group are also donating to his campaign.

So Cheney has to slink around now for his secret meetings, so no one knows what kind of filth he is into!

Cheney to address secret group
The conservative Council for National Policy will meet in downtown Salt Lake

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney will speak to a super-secret, conservative policy group in Utah on Friday during his second trip to the state this year.
Cheney will address the fall meeting of the Council for National Policy, a group whose self-described mission is to promote "a free-enterprise system, a strong national defense and support for traditional Western values."
The organization - made up of few hundred powerful conservative activists - holds confidential meetings and members are advised not to use the name of the group in communications, according to a New York Times profile of the group.
"The media should not know when or where we meet or who takes part in our programs, before [or] after a meeting,'' a list of rules obtained by The Times showed. The group did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
Czech Republic President Václav Klaus is also expected to address the Council for National Policy's meeting in downtown Salt Lake City. After his speech, Cheney will meet with Klaus, the vice president's office said Tuesday.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who ran the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, will also be in Utah on Friday but his campaign did not respond to a question about whether he would talk with the group.

Russia's Izvestia Reports:

The United States cannot live with Iran having nuclear weapons. This is the view of the head of the Pentagon Robert Gates. "The policy of the
United States is that, along with allies and friends to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons," he said during a press conference at the Defense Department. If Iran possesses nuclear weapons, it will just spread. Therefore, we must together with our friends and allies prevent their acquisition."

Last week, the former head of Central Command VS USA, in the area of operational responsibility which includes the Middle East, General John Ebizeyd suggested that the United States be able to coexist peacefully with the Iran nuclear weapon Itar-Tass said. "Let's face it: we live with a nuclear Soviet Union, we live with a nuclear China, we co-exist with other nuclear powers", he said.

"U.S. military superiority over Iran undeniable, and it is clear to the leaders in Tehran. "I think we have the power to deter Iran if it is a nuclear Iran. I doubt that the Iranians intend to attack us with nuclear weapons, "said the retired general. Another war in the region, he believes will be devastating to all.""We should avoid it, it seems to me, with all our might," he said.

Pentagon flatly refused to live with a nuclear Iran

gregg, this will be Very interesting. In order to save some of his legacy, will we see Bush admit to Corporations and humans causing Global Warming at long last???

Clock Ticking As Bush Looks To His `Legacy List'
On Agenda: Dealing With Global Warming, Working Toward Stabilizing Iraq, Restructuring Of War On Terror

WASHINGTON - As he addresses a conference on climate change this morning, President Bush will face not only a crowd of skeptics but the press of time.

For nearly seven years, he invested little personal energy in combating the challenge of global warming. Now with the end of his presidency in sight, he has called the biggest nations of the world together to press for a plan by the end of next year.

There are some other interesting tidbits in this article, too on how he hopes to try and rewrite the legacy that is coming his way!

Success in any of these areas would amount to a singular achievement and, in the view of advisers, could help rewrite Bush's place in history. No president wants to be remembered as the author of an ill-fated war and, while Iraq certainly will be at the core of the Bush administration's record, advisers hope to broaden the picture. Yet analysts said the hour is late to resolve the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict on his watch, critics doubt his sincerity on climate change and Iran remains as intransigent as ever.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, HERE IS WHY HILLARY, OBAMA AND EDWARDS RETREATED ON GETTING TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ !!!!

The goal, as national security adviser Stephen Hadley told the Council of Foreign Relations recently, is that "a new president who comes in in January of '09, whoever he or she may be, will look at it and say, `I'm persuaded that we have long-term interests here. It's important we get it right. This strategy is beginning to work. I think I'll leave Iraq alone.'"

Bush has even quietly sent advice through intermediaries to Clinton and other Democratic candidates, urging them to be careful in their campaign rhetoric so they do not limit their options should they win, according to a new book, "The Evangelical President," by Bill Sammon of the Washington Examiner.

This arrogant bastard must be reigned in. I really detest darth's ultra secret shit. It reminds me too much of Adolf Hitler planning Barbasosa (the attack on the Soviet Union) in 1940.
