Kicking Ass: The Democratic Party's Blog

Senate Republicans Still Want Us In Iraq

Posted by Michael Link on September 21, 2007 at 11:37 AM

The Levin/Reed amendment to the defense appropriations bill just failed to pass, 47-47. The bill declared that the Secretary of Defense "shall commence the reduction of the number of United States forces in Iraq not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act."

It also would have said he must "complete the transition of United States forces to a limited presence and missions as described in subsection by not later than nine months after the date of the enactment of this Act."

And just today, the Bush administration announced that they'll be boosting their spending request for the war. It isn't a small boost, either, with the Washington Post reporting it may be an additional $50 billion, which would bring the total for the year up to nearly $200 billion.

I'm sure Boehner would call that a "small price."

BUSH-CHENEY and relatives TO ENLIST? BUSH-CHENEY no bid donor contractors to GIVE BACK?

I'd suppose this means the no bid donor contractors to bush-cheney will either reap more profits or maybe, will donate to the cause by donating their profits to the war effort or better yet, to the vets who fight... and of course, bush-cheney will encourage their relatives to fight for (their) cause... yep, the bush war is good for BUSH-CHENEY and benefactors...

No I do not agree with this arguments
This is play in the old fashion of politicians.

The democratic party can be hide the reality with this arguments.

The majority in both chambers are the Democrat's (Senate and House).

So this party has to Star analysing the reality from the reality and this is the effectiveness of the leaders of this party in the congress.

From one side (Senate) Mr Reid and the other side (House) Mrs Pelosi.

His/Her failure and performance is thunderous horrible, and also his/her effectiveness and leadership, everybody can see the results of his/her actions. ( -0, -0 for each one)

It is incredible, the credibility of this Democrats Congress is far less than the credibility of the worst president of this nation. George W Bush.

The Democratic party and all the leadership of this party has to star analysing this reality, soon rather than latter, to help the Nominate for the next Presidential campaign if this party want to get the Withe House!

The bill declared that the Secretary of Defense "shall commence the reduction of the number of United States forces in Iraq not later than 90 days after the date of the enactment of this Act."

That is not what the amendment says. The amendment reads as follows:

SEC. 1535. REDUCTION AND TRANSITION OF UNITED STATES FORCES IN IRAQ.

(a) Deadline for Commencement of Reduction.--The Secretary of Defense shall commence the reduction of the number of United States forces in Iraq not later than 120 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.

(b) Implementation of Reduction as Part of Comprehensive Strategy.--The reduction of forces required by this section shall be implemented as part of a comprehensive diplomatic, political, and economic strategy that includes sustained engagement with Iraq's neighbors and the international community for the purpose of working collectively to bring stability to Iraq. As part of this effort, the President shall direct the United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations to use the voice, vote, and influence of the United States at the United Nations to seek the appointment of an international mediator in Iraq, under the auspices of the United Nations Security Council, who has the authority of the international community to engage political, religious, ethnic, and tribal leaders in Iraq in an inclusive political process.

(c) Limited Presence After Reduction and Transition.--After the conclusion of the reduction and transition of United States forces to a limited presence as required by this section, the Secretary of Defense may deploy or maintain members of the Armed Forces in Iraq only for the following missions:

(1) Protecting United States and Coalition personnel and infrastructure.

(2) Training, equipping, and providing logistic support to the Iraqi Security Forces.

(3) Engaging in targeted counterterrorism operations against al Qaeda, al Qaeda affiliated groups, and other international terrorist organizations.

(d) Completion of Transition.--The Secretary of Defense shall complete the transition of United States forces to a limited presence and missions as described in subsection (c) by April 30, 2008.

Levin-Reed is not binding. Only funding restrictions bind the President. If this had passed, it would not have changed anything.

Nancy Pelosi has to control her house floor and keep Iraq funding bills off it.

It is the Third Way group, part of the DLC/PPI group, which is telling the Democrats not to use the power of the purse.

Who's advising Congress not to use their constitutional power of the purse?

Our party leaders need to stand firm and act like leaders.

I feel like there is not one person leading the party right now. We are left on our own to find our way through the spin and half truths.

"That is not what the amendment says."

We both quoted the same thing.

we common folks can blog and jawbone about the language, what the amendment says or doesn't ...

the real power is in the congress. until there is realization among more people in this country that will influence those no 47 congress folks that this war is costing us plenty monetarily, diplomatically abroad, and most importantly the lives of our finest, and the benefactors are bush-cheney contractors ... nothing will change.

this war shouldn't be spun as the IRAQ WAR, but the BUSH WAR or anything that attaches the BUSH name.

demos, tag this as his war and tie in the benefactors aka the no bid contractors, especially in those districts where the 47 no votes came from. This is a BUSH WAR profiting his donors ... that could make a difference.

You know, the Democrats won the majority last Fall, but yo would never know it !!

The Republicans STILL flount their power through lock stepping with each other to make sure not one single Dem bill gets through.

REMEMBER this folks, when the Republican candidate is finally chosen, when the Candidate and all the Rest of the Republicans THEN start to move away from this war and this President in an effort to win, That we remember and we bring up these bills not to give troops time off, Not to insert withdrawal dates, etc!

DO NOT LET THEM OFF THE HOOK. If our gutless Dem Leaders will not kick their asses, then we will!

I hope every one of you have written your Letter to Editor today, about their voting down Habeus Corpus, voting down Soldier's time off, and wasting their freaken time with condemning a MoveOn ad! Get real, with all that is going on in this world, they gotta worry about protecting a Bush boot licker?

Uhm, you may want to notice the 47-47 number does not resemble a "mandate". That means (at least here in a democratic republic) that the people who elected their reps want them to vote a certain way. Soooooo, half of the country thinks that YOU are wrong. Gott love democracy in action.

What will the Republicans be ready to give in exchange for their integrity?

This World is not were people will be comfortable in it if something isn't done pretty soon. The Republicans are mental over showing the USA's power to the world.

Let us all work with our Democratic Leaders to change the course the Republicans have chosen?

May we all see the need to get back to reality and handle the USA's problems similar to the Clinton Administration.

God Bless America and the Democrats in those things that are good for the World and defeat every act contrary to God's will by Republicans or Democrats.
