Senate Democrats Expand Health Coverage For Kids
By a vote of 69-39, the Senate has passed legislation expanding health coverage to more children through the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a highly successful government program that makes sure poor children can receive medical care when they are sick.
"There is only one thing standing between improving the successful Children's Health Insurance Program and covering millions of uninsured children and that is a Presidential signature," said Senator Debbie Stabenow. "We need to hold the President accountable for saying no to providing coverage for over ten million uninsured American children."
Bush has threatened to veto the legislation.

Yes, the vote in the Senate is veto-proof. But the vote in the House (265-159) is not.
If the republicans veto this they'll throw away the minor chance they have in the elections.
Lets see, If I were a republican what would I want. Health care for children or a war where I could murder people. I know??? A WAR were I could make my buddies in the oil business RICH and I get to kill people. It so grand to be a republican so I can act like a mad man.
AARP will profit over 4.4 Billion Dollars while America's Seniors Suffer!
On September 21st, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) sponsored a Presidential forum in Iowa focused on health care reform. Dennis Kucinich was conveniently left out of the debate. Why? Because Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate proposing a national "not-for-profit", single-payer health insurance plan. Dennis Kucinich's Plan would eliminate the obscene profit of 4.4 billion dollars AARP alone stands to gain over the next 7 years at the expense of the senior citizens they claim to represent.
AARP's strategic corporate partnership with healthcare giants United Health Care and Aetna are embraced by Senators Clinton, Obama, and former Senator Edwards who are pushing plans to keep the "for-profit" private insurers in business and in control of your life!
This is an outrage and all average Americans of the common population should be outraged!
The "for-profit" insurers don't want their multi-billion dollar windfalls upset, so the AARP invited candidates with health care plans that would preserve and promote the interests of "for-profit" insurance and pharmaceutical companies at the expense of tens of millions of everyday Americans while the corporate media keeps America drugged with misinformation.
The DNC must NEVER AGAIN allow corporations to lead Presidential Debates and EXCLUDE candidates that do not fit into their corporate "for-profit" picture as happened with the AARP in Iowa.
Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich has the prescription for a better health care system for America. Under Dennis Kucinich's Health Care Plan, HR 676, EVERY American would be covered! NO premiums, NO deductibles, and NO co-payments. NO ONE DENIED COVERAGE and NO ONE DENIED SERVICES at a physician of your choice. Congressman Dennis Kucinich's Health Care Plan is the health care plan America deserves and Dennis Kucinich's Health Care Plan is the only plan that reduces expenses and puts your money back in your pocket.
Just think for a moment what you could do with the money that you are now paying in deductibles or other health expenses. You could save for retirement … save for education … save for a vacation. The choice really is yours! It's a healthy windfall for the people ... not the corporations.
Do not be silenced, join Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich in bringing health as a future for ALL America. Together with Dennis Kucinich the people can let the special interests and the other presidential candidates know that business is no longer going to be as usual. Dennis Kucinich does not accept business as usual and will not play the "health for-profit game" with the corporations against the best interest of the American people.
I quit AARP after they came out with that "don't vote" ad. If they were so concerned with uninformed voters, they should have spent the money on talking about the facts of the election issues.
They were just trying to keep Republicans in office against the best interests of their members.
All they seemed to want to do was get people to not vote Democrat and to sell us unnecessary insurance.
REPUBLICAN By The Name of DEMOCRAT
A DUCK by any other name is still a DUCK; if it walks like a DUCK, quacks like a DUCK, has web feet and feathers, it is a DUCK. The same is also true of a REPUBLICAN by the name of DEMOCRAT.
A REPUBLICAN by any other name, the name of DEMOCRAT, is still a REPUBLICAN; if it walks like a REPUBLICAN, talks like a REPUBLICAN and has all of the attributes of a REPUBLICAN, it is a REPUBLICAN.
Alan Greenspan recognized this truth when he declared Bill Clinton to be the best REPUBLICAN President that the United States has ever had.
The really looming question at the current time, however, is not about Bill Clinton being the best REPUBLICAN President of all time, but whether the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION and the Democratic Party should allow Bill Clinton's MAMA DUCK, Hillary Clinton to be the First REPUBLICAN WOMAN President of the United States by the name of DEMOCRAT.
The Democratic Party and the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION endured DADDY DUCK, "Bill the DRAKE", that was a REPUBLICAN by the name of DEMOCRAT. Does the Democratic Party and the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION "BASE" of the Democratic Party really want to endure MAMA DUCK, Hillary Clinton, as another member of the DUCK FAMILY that is a REPUBLICAN by the name of DEMOCRAT.
It is time for a change. It is time to end the era of the REPUBLICAN DUCKS by the name of DEMOCRAT. It is time for the Democratic Party and the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION, the "BASE" of the Democratic Party, to let Hillary the REPUBLICAN DUCK by the name of DEMOCRAT float on by, so that the Democratic Party and the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION "BASE" of the Democratic Party can elect a DEMOCRAT President, rather than another REPUBLICAN DUCK by the name of DEMOCRAT. It is high time that we have a WOMAN PRESIDENT, BUT NOT A REPUBLICAN WOMAN PRESIDENT by the name of DEMOCRAT.
ThomasG_:
The DLC, the NDN, and NDC is a whole FLOCK of REPUBLICAN DUCKS by the name of DEMOCRAT.
Nothing like misleading the public, a speciality of a party that is just as duplicitous as the Republicans. This bill is not about children. If it were, the bill would have contained a provision for denying the use of funds to cover health care for adults, which is the case in Minnesota and New Jersey. Additionally, it would have denied the use of the program to cover illegal aliens, a provision which is also lacking. Finally, it would have limited eligibility to those making twice the poverty level. This program is also a gift to corporate America in that it covers the children of parents who have insurance coverage. This program will make it easy for a company to stop offering insurance coverage to employees whose children will now be covered by this expanded program.
It is hard for a hard working taxpayer to support using tax money to pay for health benefits for the children of parents who are making more money than they are. Contrary to what the party is saying, expansion of this program is does not have overwhelming support from the public, particularly taxpayers.
So you would prefer giving your tax money to millionaires instead?
SandyH:
Debbie Stabenow is a member of the DLC and the DLC reprepresents the 20% minority professional middle class as a class and culture, not the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION as a class and culture.
I would expect that Debbie Stabenow would represent the constituents of her own class and culture, the New Class, NOT the 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION.
The 70% MAJORITY COMMON POPULATION'S children have NO REPRESENTATION in Congress or the government of the United States and have NO REASON EVEN TO EXPECT that their interests are going to be represented by the U.S. Congress and the government of the United States.
Legalize, regulate and tax marijuana and you can pay for healthcare for every man, woman, and child in America. Marijuana is a completely untaxed commodity worth over $35 BILLION dollars annually. Do the math, baby.

I'm glad this got through the senate, despite the threats of Veto. Maybe this is one bill whose veto can be overridden? Don't forget you have that power, Congress.
I'm a Democrat and I smoke.
I deeply resent the fact that the party I've supported my entire life, the party that stands up for minorities and for progressive taxation, has decided it's okay to hit me with a sixty-one cent per pack tax increase to pay for SCHIP. For my household, that's a $435 per year tax increase and our income is only $48000 per year. That kind of regressive taxation is offensive.
I'm all in favor of SCHIP, even though I have no children. But the funding should come from all Americans.
This bill is being vetoed by the wrong person for the wrong reasons. But I hope the veto causes the Democrats to rethink the funding and start protecting Americans who smoke.
Let me see if I have this correct.
There is a program (CHIP) already in existence that provides health insurance for the children of poor families.
The money is provided by the feds for the states to administer.
The program works well except that it reportedly needs more money to cover everybody that "is in need."
The Prez budgets more money.
Congress budgets a lot more money.
Congress expands the program to cover those who otherwise would not be eligable because of their income thinking that earning 70K is poverty level somewhere.
The prez says "don't do that it's too much."
Congress says "screw you" and does it anyway.
The Prez says "ok, I am going to veto it."
In the meantime, Congress and the Prez work out a plan to continue the program as currently constructed and funded.
Most everybody knows this and still somehow, I keep hearing that the Prez is going to veto CHIP and leave poor children without any insurance.
Am I missing something here?
Wake up America! What part of "a 156% tax increase on cigarettes to fund SCHIP" doesn't anyone understand?
1) That is unfair taxation, expecting smokers to pay for this increase.
2) It is a decreasing revenue source, what will be taxed next when it is not enough to pay for SCHIP???? GAS?????
3) Taxation without representation. Isn't that what the Boston Tea Party was all about??
BUSH DID THE RIGHT THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
