Webb Amendment Would Guarantee Rest For Troops
Posted by Stephanie Taylor on September 19, 2007 at 10:08 AM
Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) has sponsored legislation that would guarantee longer rest periods for troops between deployments. The amendment would guarantee active-duty troops and units at least equal time at home as the length of their previous tour overseas. The amendment also sets a minimum 1-to-3 year ratio for National Guard and Reserve members and units.
There will be a fight to pass this amendment, and Webb's office recorded this YouTube video asking for help:
You can help by calling your Senator. Calls to retiring Sen. John Warner (R-VA) are needed in particular. Warner previously supported the amendment, but now he is wavering.
For examples of why this amendment is so crucial for our troops, read this MSNBC article (h/t Nitpicker).
UPDATE: Sen. Webb introducing his amendment now.
UPDATE II: We're hearing that a vote is expected in the Senate at 5:25pm ET.

There should be a law against allowing any old man to impregnate a women not matter how willing she is to do it to further her political career.
And Thompson shouldn't be alienating any doctor at his age. It's apparent that he's going to need plenty of them from the way he's been dragging around his sorry ass and using a golf cart instead of a mountain bike like Spunky.

Sorry, got a phone call and hit the wrong button on the wrong thread.
I applaud Senator Webb's determination to truly support our troops and their families.

I listened to Senator Webb's amendment and it was so needed for our troops who are in Iraq and just being sent over and over. I don't care who says different. The Republicans are saying that would hurt our troops, well they are just going along with Bush. He has the same old(more time) as he doesn't want to in office until after the troops are brought home. He has lied and so have all the Republicans over and over. I would take the work of an ex-Marine any day. It is way past time to bring our troops home, send all the Senator's children to Iraq and see how quick they will want them home, including Bush/Cheney. They don't have a heart unless it comcerns their immediate family.

Sen. Webb is the ONLY SENATOR WITH BALLS.

Hm, Senator Webb is my state's senator.
I hope this bill makes it through. If you're not gonna pull 'em out, at LEAST let them have a break!

OK, Dems - you didn't make it this time. But you are FINALLY using the congressional system to try to stop and/or minimize the war. Keep trying one strategy after the other. Use all legal avenues. Be creative. In the end one will work. And the country will notice that you are finally trying.

Seeing that the vote did not receive enough GOP support to pass veto-safe, I see the great Repubgnicans are at it again. They hide behind "support our troops" bumper stickers while screwing them and driving the knife into their backs.
Would someone please make a note to "remind" them of this during the 2008 election cycle?

JohnPitt: That's not all. I'm not even sure if there -is- a Democratic party any more.
Posted by Foxwood on September 20, 2007 at 01:29 PM
Hope that's not true. But sometimes it seems like the party and its leaders are not willing to fight back against the dirty tactics.
The American public only has patience for soundbites, they are generally NOT reading the
op-ed pages. If we have to swift-boat the liars, then that's what we need to do.

The Webb Amendment was a poorly camoflaged effort to wave a white flag. The Democrats continue to be the party of retreat and defeat and I cannot fathom why anyone would trust you to protect the US from the very real threat we face from the terrorist factions of Islam.
The defeat of this amendment was very fortunate for the US and devastating to al Qaeda.

What is wrong with the Democratic leadership? Why are they letting the Republicans rule as if they are the majority party? Why do Democrats support a resolution like the one against Moveon.org? You wonder why there is no respect for Congress these days? Just look at what the Democrats have allowed to happen in the last nine months. President Bush and his administration and allies are making the Democrats look like fools. Wake up and do something soon about the abuses that are unfolding in our government!

Webb is a hot head who was a very successful COMPANY commander; meaning he doesn't know squat about strategy. Last time I checked, congress didn't dictate troop tours, rotation dates, or anything else regarding the WAY things are done on the ground.
As for the reason Dems have not been able to "enforce the will of the people"; well that wuold be because about 1/2 of the country still votes republican. Isn't the democratic party all about not allowing a narrow majority (that would be what you have) to roll over a minority? Isn't that what your party did with multiple judicial nominees?
Stop being hypocrites.

Who's kidding who about this resolution? Bush is gonna veto it and the Democrats will just call FOUL!!! The Republicans will keep our troops in Iraq, until someone gets the kahunas to pass legislation that will give our troops much needed rest or get us out of Iraq. The Democrats do not even have the necessary means to run counter ads, against the Republican ad by disabled troops, who seem happy as clams to keep this war going or go over and fight, even if they have to crawl back to Iraq. So, I do not see that happening any time soon.
