Webb Amendment Update

Posted by Stephanie Taylor on September 19, 2007 at 05:41 PM

The Senate voted today on an amendment proposed by Sen. Jim Webb(D-VA) that would guarantee longer rest periods for troops between deployments.

The Republican Party lobbied hard against this amendment. The amendment was defeated, 56 to 44.

UPDATE: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) sponsored a toothless "fake" amendment that states that "we understand the stress and strain that’s been inflicted on the men and women in the military"--but does nothing to provide real support to the troops. The non-binding resolution was voted on immediately afterwards and lost by a vote of 55 to 45.

A sad day for our brave soldiers and marines

Republicans treat the military like discount brand toliet paper! And it's gonna come back to SOIL them in 08!

Did we gain two votes?

I thought we had been short six votes in the past..five Republicans and that Independent Republican from Connecticut.

McCain has appeared pretty much toothless and without a clue ever since he and Graham strolled hand-and hand through that marketplace in Baghdad with Blackhawks hovering overhead and tanks surrounding the place for blocks.

When it comes to McCain and reality, he's in outer space.

Rather than call for cloture, it's time to make the republicans filibuster. And tape it.

I wonder how the Republicans up for election voted? What happened to "support the troops?"

The troops include the National Guard. I'm sure 100% of the National Guard would support this bill. I'm bet they've had it with this backdoor draft. Vietnam didn't call up the Guard.

But now THE GUARD is "nation building," and trying to spead "freedom and democracy" to a civil war torn Middle-Eastern Nation.

"No Nation Building" is the mother of all "flip-flops."

.......And why is this blockage and DENIAL of well needed REST for our troops by the repuKKKans not splashed all over the news media. The Democratic leaders should be in front and center on this issue telling the American people why the GIULIANI, MCCAIN, FOX NEWS and the REPUBLICAN party are all conspiring to keep our brave men and women fighting in IRAQ without adequate REST and training of some equipments.

This vote which was blocked by the repigblicans, was not reported as such on Fox News likewise the Democratic response to Bush speech on 9/13/07 was also not covered by Fox News. Its time the Congress look into Fox News SUPPRESSION of the news to the public because of their alliance to the Bush/republican party. The congress should look at sections {73.1941} {73.1943} {76.5} {76.1701} of the FCC codes to see if Fox News is violating these codes. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Stephanie!!! Please THINK before you blog or don't blog at all. You've given some misinformation. You must be a typical republican! It was NOT defeated 56 to 44 you uneducated hack. 56 voted for it including 6 republicans. 44 republicans voted against it. It didn't pass the 60 vote minumum.
The way you say it makes it sound like 6 dems voted against it. Please blog correctly!

It really is past time to make them put in the time to filibuster. Every Democrat I know is getting fed up with our Senators not fighting for their positions, but seemingly just rolling over.
