Judge Denies Republican Senator's Move to Withdraw Guilty Plea

Posted by Stephanie Taylor on October 4, 2007 at 03:30 PM

Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) will not be able to withdraw his guilty plea from a bathroom sex sting in a Minneapolis airport.

A Minnesota judge Thursday denied Sen. Larry Craig's decision to withdraw his guilty plea.

"Because the defendant's guilty plea was accurate, voluntary and intelligent, and because the conviction is supported by the evidence, the defendant's conviction for disorderly conduct occurring on June 11, 2007, in the men's public restroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in Bloomington, Hennepin County, Minn., is valid," Judge Charles A. Porter wrote in a 27-page opinion released at 1:40 p.m.

There has been no reaction yet from Craig. He initially said he would resign from his seat last Sunday, but decided to stay in office until the judge issued his ruling. No word yet on whether Craig will now step down, but the pressure on him from GOP leaders to leave will be intense.

UPDATE: CNN is reporting that Craig is saying he will stay in the Senate after all.

Why not stay? He fits right in. The Republican Party is full of perverts operating under the cloak of "family values."

This is another face of the Republican Party whom votes against stem cell research, and claims to support life. What they say compared to what they do is outrageous. Total hypocrisy! They have no morals.

He should preach to the fundamentalists, and get out of the public policy business.

I would like to take a moment to thank Senator Larry Craig for helping me overcome a nervous tick I used to have. You see; I used to tap my foot every time I was seated, and I had little control over it. Mr. Craig cured my nervous ill over night.
I don’t care where Larry picks up his dates. I only care about minority interests and my party has paid a heavy price for supporting minority rights. So Senator Craig is not going to step down and the Democrats are not going to back off the support of minority interests.
Mr. Craig can thank us later when he retires from Congress. Our demand for the fair treatment of homosexuals has given Mr. Craig a leg to stand on; a better leg than McCarthy (Joseph Raymond McCarthy was a Republican U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin between 1947 and 1957) would have given him.
