12
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 08:22 PM

i guess i will go watch this. cbs had a nice story about saint rudy of the marriages tonight:

(CBS) Rudy Giuliani's campaign is once again fending off new questions about an old affair.

According to Politico.com, in 2000 - as Giuliani was beginning the not-so-secret extramarital marital relationship with Judith Nathan, the woman who eventually became his third wife - he billed obscure city agencies thousands of dollars in expenses for his police security detail in the Hamptons off Long Island, where Nathan was living.

For example, in one instance, $34,000 worth of travel expenses were placed in the budget for the New York City Loft Board.

"These were records that the city comptroller tried to get in the past, but the mayor's office said they couldn't be released because of security," Politico.com's Mike Allen told CBS News correspondent Byron Pitts.

Giuliani's campaign had this response, calling the story a non-issue.

"This is common practice," the campaign said in a statement. "The NYPD is responsible for providing security for the mayor of New York around the clock."

"It’s clearly the responsibility of the NYPD to provide the mayor’s security around the clock and that’s what they did,” Giuliani spokesperson Maria Comella told CBS News.

But the question isn't about his security detail. It's about how the expenses were billed.

"It's coming out at the worst possible time for Rudy Giuliani, just as voters in Iowa and New Hampshire are beginning to make up their minds finally," said University of Virginia political science professor Larry Sabato. "It reinforces his biggest problem, which is not just his liberal positions on social issues, but also the fact that he's had a very messy private life."

And 'messy' is always unwelcome in a campaign that would rather stay on message.

Ouch...Rudy put on the spot....hehehe

23
GiG on November 28, 2007 at 08:49 PM

i knew the republican candidates were hypocritical ass wipes but i didn't realize the questioners would be as well.

24
gregg on November 28, 2007 at 08:52 PM

you can stream it on CNN

25
GiG on November 28, 2007 at 08:59 PM

ok, the NRA guy was a bit scary.

26
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 08:59 PM

Gregg: I submitted a question on YouTube. I asked all candidates: "Do you support the separation of Church and State and, if elected, will you appoint Judges who support it?"
I was told by a 'spokesperson' at CNN that this was not a 'general election' debate. It was a "Republican Debate" and as such, it was confined to Republican Issues. WTF!!! since when is support for the constitution only a Democratic Issue?!

27
marymac_memphis on November 28, 2007 at 09:01 PM

Wallace you can watch the debate live at cnn.com if you are interested.

28
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:01 PM

Gregg, the questioners scare me almost more than the candidates..

29
GiG on November 28, 2007 at 09:02 PM

Mary, did you have to state your party affiliation?

30
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:04 PM

They sure are worried about their guns, aren't they?

31
GiG on November 28, 2007 at 09:05 PM

Kristen: I would watch on CNN but I don't have a 'broad band' connection and it will not stream. :(

32
marymac_memphis on November 28, 2007 at 09:05 PM

Kristen: No - I stated no party affiliation - none. I just asked all the candidates the question. I called CNN to see what the criteria was for questions to be chosed, that is what I was told. Can you believe it?
Also, THANK YOU so much for that link from this morning to the vanity fair article. That is one of the best articles that I have ever read.

Sorry for posting twice. I thought I caught the spelling error before it posted.

35
marymac_memphis on November 28, 2007 at 09:09 PM

Thompson just said he thinks the number one focus should be overturning Roe vs. Wade and should focus on getting the right judges on the bench to accomplish this goal.

36
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:11 PM

Romney would happily sign a bill that made abortion a federal crime. Talk about a flip flop...they keep saying it's a 'state issue' and they are willing to push for a federal ban.

37
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:14 PM

Posted by Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:11 PM Regarding Thompson:
Gee, that's not what he said in a speech here in Memphis in 1994 (I was there in person!) when he was running for the Senate. West Tennessee is liberal where middle and east Tennessee are very, very conservative. Here in West Tennessee he signed a 'pledge card' to support a woman's right to choose; however, in another other speeches that same year in middle and east Tennessee, he professed to be anti-abortion.

39
DawnTheOriginaL on November 28, 2007 at 09:16 PM

They were just asked if the candidates believe every word in Holy Bible. They started with Rudy.

40
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:17 PM

Mary, Thompson said he makes no pledge to any group except the American public. so I guess that is another flip flop for Thompson.

41

"You ain't nothin' but a hound dog, ageing all the time
You ain't nothin' but a hound dog, chasing women all the time,
You ain't never done a nothin' and you ain't no friend of mine!"

Yea, they said you had some sense, but that was just a lie.
Yes, they said you had some class, but that was just a lie,
You ain't never done a nothin' and you ain't no friend of mine!"

44
DawnTheOriginaL on November 28, 2007 at 09:21 PM

Kristen,

Thompson is such a jerk. On the hannity show day he was saying that the question of abortion should be left up to the states.

He is a major flipflopper.

DawnTheOriginaL on November 28, 2007 at 09:23 PM

Good evening, all.

The Republicans began their debate as they always do showing their hate for those that they consider inferior.

Illegal foreign labor....the Republicans love that they work dirt cheap and bring down the standard of living for working Americans, but they hate that their children get sick and need to be educated.

It's a love/hate relationship that these hypocrites are using tonight in the debate to fire up the racist elements in their base. Pretty is as pretty does.

It's funny how the GOP sees absolutely nothing wrong with treating minorities as sub-humans that can be used as economic slaves...and use passages from the Bible to back up their less than Christian attitude.

Now they are expanding that criteria to include all workers around the globe who are not born to wealth. The Republican Party has renounced their citizenship to our country and is quickly creating a borderless aristocracy.

It's treason. And George W. Bush should be impeached for entering into that agreement with Mexico and Canada to establish a United States of North America. The Constitution clearly does not allow him to sign treaties that Congress has not prepared for his signature.

Why isn't he being called on this?

47
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 09:23 PM

Johne: Not a flip-flopper - he just has a convenient form of Alheizmers. JOKE!

What a Crock of Bullshiters!

What I AM finding astounding, is for all Giuliani's high polling, do you hear the BOOs, he has gotten over the evening? WOW!
And if you watch the audience when they span it, Giuliani does not get much applause.

McCain, the old War Hog, wants our boys to stay there until the last Iraqi is dead and gone. Thank God Ron Paul is telling the audience McCain is Wrong !

PamB on November 28, 2007 at 09:27 PM

Posted by SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 09:23 PM

Which of those pugs is Pretty? I think they are all rather unattractive and at the rate Thompson's nose is growing pretty soon he may need a nasal circumcision.

52
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:27 PM

Romney doesn't want to allow those at Git'mo to get representation and they should just stay there and thinks it's ok to waterboard those we hold captive...McCain is taking him to task for it.

55

56
GiG on November 28, 2007 at 09:34 PM

well, time to close up shop and head to the house. bbl (under my 'home name')

57
marymac_memphis on November 28, 2007 at 09:35 PM

My favorite question so far tonight was the woman who asked what punishment should be given to women who kill unborn babies?

My husband shook his head and asked outloud, "What is wrong with these Puritans? How many lashes does this hateful person want to give to a woman who is raped? These Far Right religious zealots are no different than the Saudi version."

And he's right. They also enjoy the idea of torturing people and killing anyone they suspect doesn't agree with their narrow version of humanity.

You can't reason with these hardened hearts, and any candidate who thinks they can compromise their postition on these issues enough to get them to vote for you is nuts. Why would you encourage them?

58
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 09:35 PM

Oh, gag,

McCain says we never lost in Vietnam, it was Americans who made them come home!

59
PamB on November 28, 2007 at 09:36 PM

McCain just said it was American opinion that caused us to lose Viet Nam, that we never lost a battle in Viet Nam.

60
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:36 PM

Ok, disregard...they are all scary.

61

62
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:38 PM

I was watching the Republican debate on CNN an Moslem woman in the U.S. asks how do you repair the world's image because of Iraq. Then a CNN special report screen comes on on Cox Cable in Panama City (Bush Country). Guess what it was a Cranny Cantrell Restaurant add for Chanel 9. They then also had the local weather while the debate was on. But the time they got back to her question it was half of one candidate. Why is it that local channel can choose what to override on a debate?

63
dlesterpoet on November 28, 2007 at 09:40 PM

What fruitcakes they all are. Oh, those big bad Radical Muslims just all want to slit our throats, because they don't like us.
Has NOTHING to do with the fact that we are occupying bases in their countries, in their areas. Bin Laden just decided to get us with his AlQaeda because he had nothing better to do!

And there are people that BELIEVE them?

64
PamB on November 28, 2007 at 09:41 PM

Can't watch anymore of these guys, nor the softball questions CNN is throwing them.

NOTHING like when the Dems were on, and the questions were tough and embarassing !

Turning off, got better things to do.

talk to you tomorrow, Dems.

65
PamB on November 28, 2007 at 09:44 PM

Romney needs to be asked about the Geneva Convention and if he supports it? He needs to be asked what is in it, and have reason to believe he does not, Also he needs to be asked if water boarding is legal in International law.

You got me. I should have said old and delusional is as old and delusional does.

All those wrinkles represent the number of lies and divorces these guys have conducted in the name of family values and their Christian faith throughout their political careers.

I'd suggest they all use Botox. Then they would all look like Ann Coulter.

67
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 09:46 PM

Ok, here comes the gay bashing.

68
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:48 PM

ok, I thought I was disgusted with the abortion question...but that was disgusting...not sure who the fool is next to Paul, but the guy just said it was not good to put those young men and women with conservative Christian values in tight Military units with homosexuals.

69
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:50 PM

isn't it interesting that none of the Republicans are suggesting they follow the lead of Bush...they all keep bringing up Reagan (and practically crossing themselves while doing it).

70
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:56 PM

"Most of the young men and women who are joining the military are conservatives."? Did you just hear Hunter say that?

Well, if that is true, they're all going to liberals by the time they return home from the fourth or fifth re-deployment in the Middle East. Which party really supports the troops and cares about vets?

They cut the retired gay general's mike? Can you believe it? What a bunch of creeps. And Anderson Cooper is gay and he allowed it to happen? I bet these dolts in the audience don't even know.

71
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 09:58 PM

Huckabee just said that if we send someone to Mars he would suggest sending Hillary. She seems to be the only one that scares them.

72
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 09:58 PM

It seems Channel 9 again put adds in at the beginning of a tough questions. Two adds and the weather and VIPUR TV blocked the social security questions.

73
dlesterpoet on November 28, 2007 at 09:58 PM

Rudy just said he beat Bill Clinton and how it's bad to have a Republican that can beat Bill...but in the 2000 Senate election Rudy couldn't hold his own against Hillary! :)

74
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 10:08 PM

Did you see the guy asking the question about why blacks don't vote for Republicans more often considering how many wonderful things they have done for that community?

I swear he was a Rove plant. He was the perfect stereotype of what a Republican thinks "negroes" should be...as if any blacks would be watching this debate to begin with unless they work for a GOP politician or want their money to run as one and later become a rich lobbyist.

75
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 10:09 PM

79
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 10:19 PM

if I had to declare a wiener oops I mean winner from the group I would say that Huckabee was the strongest candidate. Romney began to look frazzled and just couldn't come back and Rudy kept getting booed.

80
Kristen on November 28, 2007 at 10:21 PM

Praise BE! LOL

Well from what I've read here I didn't miss MUCH and it may have even been scary to watch? LOL

81
DawnTheOriginaL on November 28, 2007 at 10:23 PM

Has NOTHING to do with the fact that we are occupying bases in their countries, in their areas.

Pam,

Ron Paul said the same thing and they booed so loud you would have thought he was the devil.

Most of the rank and file Republicans see the bogeyman behind ever oil well in the Middle East.

That and they like going after dark-skinned peoples with shock and awe bombs or asking other people to send their children to disrupt their lives for decades so they can profit from the neverending occupation.

82
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 10:24 PM

Kristen,

I think they all pretty much discredited each other.

Huckabee sounded the most liberal which is what most stealth Republican candidates do to make themselves look good. He's actually the most conservative.

83
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 10:28 PM

Did you catch the bit during the post debate where they asked Republican undecided voters and the lady said she wasn't impressed and that she is actually leaning towards Edwards, because he actually discusses the issues she?

OK, that was the only highlight of the debate.

G'nite all.

84
GiG on November 28, 2007 at 10:28 PM

85

Sandy, I surely don't think Huckabee is liberal nor do I think he did great...I just think he stood out from that crowd of knuckle draggers.

86

87

I think Romney and Giulani made themselves look like cut-throat opportunists. It should play well with their supporters. It's obviously going to come down to one or the other. Maybe they will both run together?

88
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 10:38 PM

Good night, all.

89
SandyH on November 28, 2007 at 10:39 PM

Oh Hillary come on and fight with nails those vain Republicans are after you. You see if you want to be President; come down to street level. Do your homework on "We the people" not the Royal family green roots.

Where are those Democratic voices that fight for our workers, this Corporate Party has silenced you as their puppet leaded toys. Attack the issues that the Republican dare not answer. It is time to pull out the USS Constitution and give them redcoats a broadside on all patriots lines.

The Dubai Party, Mission Acomplished Recycled Party, and the Katrina Party. It seems the Royals of the Democratic Party have Kerry atitudes that give up "At Will" of a Royal highness Republican Party. If you fail your duty right now then I may have to get a passport to get out of the Corporate Republic and join the true patriots overseas.

Time to pull the Blackwater, DynCorp, and Halliburton string but just like in Congress you will sit on your asses. Show main street America on mainstream values seeing Katrina tears.

Where is the vote in Congress that we need to not have a base in Iraq? With the US in dire needs, why do we need a trillion dollar a year commitment to pay Bush contractors and there cowboy armies.
With Bush values you see how governments are holding the world citizens "At Will" putting them in prisons without trials and torturing citizens with Bush values. Yes, Bush has taken US back centuries, where Americans were imprisoned without due process, and no Red Cross visitation. Yes, you see a Bush value system with his Saudi Arabia Sunnies flogging a raped victim with 200 wiped marks on feminine flesh. A Shiite of a sub servant lower caste like a lynching or a whipping of our Negroes. (Sorry to not use black, but this showed our American division.)

What I do not understand is where is the guts of our Constitution, they are not in Congress nor it seems in the Republican and Democratic Party. So sad this Washington of Tories.
We need a GAO and EAO (Executive Accounting Organization) to certify that all funds are dispensed correctly according to budgets. That all accounting must be certified to the highest standard of concrete accountability.

Make the White House find the missing funds in Iraq before Congress authorizes any more mad money. As an emergency, Congress can give money in parcels to specific elements of Bush's budget like the specific military projects with them reporting back to Congress, and having records to support disbursements. Do not fund Blackwater, DynCorp, and others who cannot account for 100% of the funding. Congress have the White House parcel budgets with priorities and amounts. Have the White House certify receipts with that parcel. Congress do not give a blank check, not to a Savings and Loan Bush family.

Remember in Vietnam after being warned by the French to not go in, we invaded because they were slaughtering civilians, and thought we could take the French's bases "At Will" as cowboys. This scenario is the same as in Iraq right now, the French warning US there were no WMD's but Bush's Cowboys wanted bases there. So they blamed Saddam's slaughter of civilians to justify it. Guess what, after Mission Accomplished, we had a civil war civilian slaughter on Bush blunders. Blunders where we again had to invade with a surge, while watching Blackwater, DynCorp, and contract cowboy disasters trying to hinder it.

God, Bush is Vietnam recycled Nixon, only twenty times worse to our nation, especially with this "At Will" Congress, who does homework figuring out bridges to nowhere but their pocket profits.

What happens to campaign money that is not used? Are these accounts used for personal reasons? Does unspent money need to be given back or put back in the government? It seems one could get rich from these funds. If these funds are used for other reasons is the money then taxed and listed as income?

maryinmemphis on November 29, 2007 at 12:11 AM

What was encouraging was that the undecided Republicans in the poll stayed that way after the debate with one saying she would vote for Edwards over the Republican candidates so far. When asked it they would vote Republican, none raised their hands.

93
dlesterpoet on November 29, 2007 at 12:54 AM

Are you serious? That's awesome! Hi David. Loved your earlier post from 10:46. As to the left over money, they can retain for 'future campaigns' or donate to the coffers of their party. Beyond that, I don't know. That's a great question! Ask Hybrid or Blue - that's one that is right up their alley! Other than that, how are you? did you see the link that Kristen put up to an article on the Vanity Fair web site. It is a great article.

94

No I missed it, I will look at it thanks. Thanks for the compliment. I try to make people think about issues and come up with their own conclusion but I think it is not working in any part of my life.

Anyway Huckabee looked good at the debate but would devastate our nation. Romney is a wishy washy say anything to get elected fool. Rudy Giuliani loves himself in a super hero mirror. Thompson much the idiot Nixon said he was. McCain did better but still like Bush. Hunter, did not have much to say. Ron Paul, I really like his ideas they run like Kucinich more Constitutional.

I was terminated for Poetry and said I was not going to cut my hair until George VII is out of office. Well every day, I look more like a hundred dollar bill with Ben Franklin on it. I wish I was the Constitutional Ambassador he was, and show the benefits of true Freedom and Democracy.

Anyway Mary thanks and may God bless you, the Liberal one that loves "We the people." I will see you later.

Bill Bennett commented on a republican saying, "he was all in, like they say in Texas Hold 'em." Isn't this another "family values," moralist, republican who was found to have a gambling issue? Republicans have no moral ground on anything. They attack the poor, tax the middle class, and make masses suffer with a cooked up war.

What a pathetic field the Republicans have to show. They all oppose a right to choice, so none of them are acceptable to a majority of Americans. They talk about wanting to "get government off our backs," but they would put BIG government in the most private places: bedrooms and doctors' offices.

I hope voters, especially woman, know how important it is to elect a Democrat who will appoint Supreme Court Justices who will defend rights, and a woman's choice. And if they oppose choice, you know they ALL oppose embryonic stem cell research.

I don't think we need people like Bill Bennett, Senator Craig, Rudy, Romney, and Huckabee legislating morality, appointing Supreme Court justices, and ending important programs and blocking REAL "pro-life" research.

Big_Yellow_Dog on November 29, 2007 at 02:37 AM

The Republicans great visions: eliminating the Department of Education, Energy, and the IRS, a flat sales tax, more war, and fundamentalist Judges. The Republican platform can be summed up in 3 words: Repressive, Regressive, and Oppressive. Talk about NO VISION. They are ALL jokes.

It's clear to see we need to talk about the facts and policy. The Republican plans would create major problems. They are pandering to the uninformed voter. Eliminating the Dept of Education is like DEREGULATING educating. It's another Reagan idea that would make a big mess of the future.

BRING IT ON, REPUBLICANS! WE WELCOME THE DEBATE.

Good morning, everyone.

I watched the debate, but fell fast asleep once it was over. No need to watch the rehashing when some great snoozing could be had.

Where was the divirsity of the crowd? Even the carpenter mentioned that they all looked like bored stuffed shirts. (I told him it's a repug thing)

I noticed the "questions" were all ultra conservative. Too bad no questions/answers of bringing the country together was mentioned. Well, I guess when Grover asked his question, two of the candidates stated they would be held accountable by the American people.

I loved the gun questions, can't say much for the answers...I wondered how in the world could anyone ask if abortion was outlawed all together, what kind of punishment the woman should receive. These are the people who are worried about Islamic zealots?

All in all, these candidates were pandering to their base, just like our candidates do to us. Hey baby, that's politics!

If I were a repug, I'd vote for Huck. But, he better watch out sending Sen. Clinton to Mars. She'd have a whole world to control, and not just one country.

;p

The Republicans got softball questions. Do you support guns, the bible, and secure borders?

Notice NOBODY mentioned Bush, but they all agreed with Bush on policy, except Ron Paul on the war. There you have it, they are all using double speak and rhetoric. Republicans offer more of the same.

They say they want to cut spending, but the TRILLION DOLLAR UNPAID WAR is full speed ahead, and whatever it takes. They are mental.

Most people in general are, not just repugs.

There are so many in "the church" that believe in the death penalty, but are against abortion. I gave a sermonette on this very subject years ago. Didn't go over well with the congregation.

The carpenter & I disagree about the death penalty, but were both too tired to go into a deep discussion about the issue last night. It's not something that needs to be "straight between us", so no need to bring that subject up in everyday talk. More pressing issues in our daily life. It's 26 here in NM. Good news is that there is a rain storm heading from the SW and is supposed to give Arizona and New Mexico some rain. Finally.

Those damn repukes are living in another world. The most important issues to them seem to abortion, gays in the military and continuing the war.

The big issue with the repuke talk show hosts is Hillary and how she flip flops (Huh!) and why the Dems won't let the bush drill for oil in the US. After all, according to them, the oil magically appears from the bowels of the earth and it's everywhere. Even if this was true, which it isn't, it takes millions of years to coalesce into a pocket of oil. However, this would dash their creationism dreams that the earth is only 6,000 years old and adam and eve rode dinosaurs to work at the local diner.

As I understand it, lowering interest rates next week will cause the Dollar to decline in world markets.

I also understand that lowering interest rates will help the big banks.

It appears that the fed will go for lower rates to help bush crime family banking business and screw the Dollar. It will also raise the price of crude oil aiding and abetting the bush crime family.

bush's fed chairman is doing a great job of screwing the American people.

John, When the market gets "toppy" like it is, it could signal a major downturn. The weak dollar makes our exports cheaper, aiding our balance of trade deficit, it also means that China will be less inclined to buy dollars which will make it more difficult for Bush to finance his war or anything else. If we were or are forced to run this country on a balanced budget, we will have to become an "isolationist" country and bring all our troops home fast.

gregg on November 29, 2007 at 08:31 AM

If this one doesn't scare the hell out of you, nothing ever will. Written in the Australian newspaper, they are all waiting for the Economic fall of the USA !

" We are so conditioned to the idea that two main parties define politics, we even call them left and right as if they were parts of our body. But parties spring up in response to the primary tensions in a certain time and place. In the 20th century that polarisation was capital versus labour. A century earlier, before even the idea of power among the working poor, politics was aristocrats versus tradesmen, the growing middle class of shopkeepers and artisans that formed the basis of the Tories.

This is no longer the central tension in modern democracies. Centrist governments cover all the bases, and conservative politics has begun to wither away. This is a change that has come late to Australia. But social evolution is now speeding up and even this alignment is becoming dated.

The issue of the future, coming down on us now like a steam train, is of course the environment, the double hammer blows of climate change and peak oil. Energy, weather and human misery are the factors that will define our lives for decades to come. You can cancel your newspaper, those are the only four words you need to know.

Linked to this, but compounding it in frightening ways, is the imminent demise of the United States economy. In fact the whisper, the subplot in economist circles, was that this election was one to lose. That whoever inherited Australia in 2007 inherited a coming economic collapse in globalised trade that would suck Australia and much of the rest of the world down with it. For two years now the best predictions have been that the subprime meltdown would act as merely the detonator of a much larger explosive charge created long ago by US consumer debt, concealed by Chinese and Arab investment in keeping that great hungry maw that is America sucking in what it could not begin to pay for. The avalanche-like fall of US house prices will be closely followed by the same in linked economies worldwide, and presage a harsh and very different world than the one we have lived in. In short, the party is over. We are a civilisation in collapse.

Here is the Right Wing Politico on Giuliani's cheating of the tax payers, his adultry, etc.
Just another one of your Family Value Republicans! HAHAHAHA

Giuliani billed obscure agencies for trips

As New York mayor, Rudy Giuliani billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons, according to previously undisclosed government records.

The documents, obtained by Politico under New York’s Freedom of Information Law, show that the mayoral costs had nothing to do with the functions of the little-known city offices that defrayed his tabs, including agencies responsible for regulating loft apartments, aiding the disabled and providing lawyers for indigent defendants.

Asked about this article after it was published on Wednesday, Giuliani said: "It's not true."

He said he had 24-hour security during his eight years as mayor because of "threats," adding: " I had nothing to do with the handling of their records, and they were handled, as far as I know, perfectly appropriately."

The practice of transferring the travel expenses of Giuliani's security detail to the accounts of obscure mayoral offices has never been brought to light, despite behind-the-scenes criticism from the city comptroller weeks after Giuliani left office.

Black voters focus on Clinton, Obama

By Gabrielle Russon | Washington Bureau

~snip~

WASHINGTON - In the eyes of black voters, Hillary Clinton has a slight edge over Barack Obama, her closest rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, according to a survey released Tuesday.

"African-American voters are really only looking at two candidates," said David Bositis, a senior analyst at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a think tank focused on African-American affairs that released the poll. "There is Hillary Clinton and there is Barack Obama. Really none of the other candidates exist in the realm that Clinton and Obama occupy."

The New York senator was viewed favorably by 83 percent of black voters, compared to Obama's 74 percent. About 10 percent of those surveyed viewed Clinton and Obama negatively. The national survey, conducted between Oct. 5 and Nov. 2, asked 750 African-Americans who were likely to vote in primaries or attend caucuses about the presidential candidates and related issues.

Statement by ISEA Official Tom McLaughlin on Obama Education Conference Call

ISEA Southwest Uniserv Unit President Tom McLaughlin, a resident of Council Bluffs, career educator, and candidate for ISEA Vice-President, issued the following statement in response to Senator Obama’s conference call today:

"Senator Clinton has worked tirelessly to support early childhood education, improve teacher training, lower class sizes, fully fund No Child Left Behind, and reward innovative thinking in education. She also understands the challenges our teachers face in the classroom everyday and has been an advocate to support the work of educators at every level. She understands that the focus of education should be on student learning beyond a single standardized test and that test scores alone should not be used to punish schools, teachers, and most importantly students by cutting funding or salaries. This is a defining issue in this campaign with Senator Obama being the only Democratic candidate to support merit pay, which is not a good policy for teachers or students. As President, Hillary Clinton will continue to proudly support efforts to fund and improve our educational system. Senator Clinton is the clear choice for voters interested in the best education system for our state's students."

But the exact details of what Edwards asked of the Tar Heels remain a secret. Neither the school nor the Democratic presidential candidate is willing to release a "ticket wishlist" described in an e-mail between an Edwards adviser and the school's former law school dean.

"It seems absurd to me that Senator Edwards or the university would be treating these documents or this issue like it were a state secret," said Amanda Martin, a Raleigh-based attorney and general counsel of the North Carolina Press Association.

gregg,

take a look at some of the feature threads on Free Republic from the debate ! ewww, they sure hate Anderson Cooper, (another gay), and the fact they actually flew in some of the YouTubers WHO WERE DEMOCRATS, was a huge sin!
(Like when the Dems had their's, anybody checked if they were Repugs or Dems)!

ps, I can't get over the few bloggers on Free Republic these days. A few years ago, there were so many on there, all sounding just like the trolls who come in here !

Campaign 2008

Sen. Biden looks to ‘slow and steady’ approach to overtake Edwards in Iowa
By Sam Youngman

November 28, 2007

Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) is trailing almost all of his Democratic rivals in the crucial first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa, but his campaign insists the longtime senator is building a “textbook” strategy that will propel him to third place.

The Biden campaign says it can shock the political world on Jan. 3 provided it succeeds on two fronts: soliciting support from elected officials in the state on the same level as front-running candidates Sens. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), and focusing on rural and older caucus-goers.

Good morning, all.

I wondered how in the world could anyone ask if abortion was outlawed all together, what kind of punishment the woman should receive. These are the people who are worried about Islamic zealots?

Essie,

That was the one that got me and my husband, too. I hope it's been put up on U Tube, so we can direct people to watch what they will get if they vote in another Republican majority.

200 lashes for abortion, 100 for using birth control, 50 for questioning the the American Taliban on anything? Maybe detention in mental wards or work camps run by Halliburton?

Since they started torturing and pre-emptively starting wars against people in other countries, anything is possible here now...especially as Bush has suspend the Bill of Rights and our Democratic leadership stand by and not challenge them on it.

I'm glad to know that Necee is safe with you and the carpenter now. I'm glad to know you are safe with him. Sometimes you wonder why bad things happen to good people...then you meet someone who brings it all back into perspective.

Henry Hyde has died...being reported on CNN.

Here in West Tennessee he signed a 'pledge card' to support a woman's right to choose; however, in another other speeches that same year in middle and east Tennessee, he professed to be anti-abortion.

Interesting...I have the same view as Thompson? Cept mine is an actual position, not a political one. I am personally against abortion, as in I would probably not have one if I was pregnant. (Yes I know it is a physical improbability that a man will ever GET pregnant...but who knows what I was or will be in another life?) But I fully support the right of others to choose a different path.

I also fully support the right of people who feel abortion is wrong to try and reach out to those women going into a clinic...but not to block access, and certainly not to bomb. And I think they would have a lot more success if they would stop calling them sinners and murderers...I mean seriously, does that help anyone? Do they really think this is an easy decision for most women? I've seen bumper stickers that simply say "Choose life". Maybe if the stigma of being pregnant were gone, and maybe if we did a better job of lending a helping hand, the number of women having abortions would decrease?

Nah, what am I thinking? Economic prosperity for the middle and lower classes doesn't help! Tax cuts for the rich help!

uh-oh, it looks like the Brig. General that asked the question on gays in the military and was brought in for the debate actually is connected to the Clinton campaign.
