DNC Statement On National American Indian Heritage Month
November 6, 2007Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and Frank LaMere, chair of the DNC's Native American Coordinating Council, issued the following statement celebrating National American Indian Heritage Month:
"In marking National American Indian Heritage Month we recognize the contributions that America's 4.5 million American Indians and Alaska Natives make to our country every day as well as the richness and diversity of American Indian and Alaska Native cultures and traditions. From the thousands of American Indian and Native-owned businesses who contribute to our economy, to the more than 12,800 Native Americans and American Indians currently serving in the military, Indian Country is as vital a part of the American fabric as ever.
"Democrats are committed to honoring America's Indians and Native Americans by fighting to increase economic and educational opportunities, expand access to quality health care, and protect the civil rights of indigenous people. That's why Congressional leaders are working to pass the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, which Republicans refused to reauthorize for 12 years, and working on Native American housing issues, increased funding for education in Indian Country at all levels, and promoting financial and tax policies that strengthen tribal economic development efforts.
"Our commitment to strengthening Indian Country is also the driving force in our efforts to promote political empowerment for Native Americans. At the DNC, we are committed to providing Native Americans and American Indians opportunities to stand up and demand their place on the ticket, not just a seat at the table. As a result, there are now 64 Native Americans serving in state legislatures in 14 states, more than ever before. Through their commitment to public service they are showing that the best way to stand up for their community is to run for office. Together, we are working to build a stronger and more prosperous nation for all of our families."
