Joe Wilson Rips Obama, Ignites Debate Over Candidates' Experience
December 21, 2007 04:19 PM
"Intuition may be a laudable quality among psychics and palm readers," the Ambassador writes, "but for a professional American diplomat like myself, who have spent a career toiling in the vineyards of national security, it has no relevance to serious discussion of foreign policy.
In fact, Obama's supposed "intuitive sense" is no different from George W. Bush's 'instincts' and 'gut feeling' describing his own foreign policy decision-making. We have been down this road before."
(in case this was missed)
My favorite Ambassador has some strong feelings about experience after the INEPT and INCOMPETENT group of THUGS he was SCREWED by recently. I don't blame him one bit.

Several have asked who I am backing to be the next president. I have not decided on a final choice because, to be candid, I have little say in the matter. I live and vote in Maryland. By the time primary season rolls around in my neck of the woods and bay inlets, the die will be cast.
Of the current field of democratic candidates I like three in particular -- Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards. If I were participating in an Iowa caucus or voting in New Hampshire, I'd go for Joe. But he is not getting any traction. So that leaves me with Hillary and Edwards.
I favor giving Hillary more coverage at No Quarter for a very simple reason -- no other candidate for president in my memory has been subjected to as many vile, baseless attacks as this good woman. You don't have to be a rightwing nut to know or believe some of this garbage. According to these critics Hillary is a murderer, a practicing lesbian who is getting it on with her Saudi chief of staff, a swindler, a cheat, and a cover-up artist. Oh yeah, her and Bill employ, so we are told, their own hit squad who run around silencing critics.
What I find amazing is how inept that Clinton "hit" squad is? If they were worth a damn (or REAL) then critics like this bozo in Texas, Robert Morrow, would be a worm buffet by now (I will not link to anything written by Morrow). Ain't it amazing that Bill and Hill are known to kill their opponents and yet so many opponents and critics are still walking around unscathed?

Clinton pledges support to veterans
~snip~
By AMY LORENTZEN, Associated Press Writer Sun Dec 23, 8:21 PM ET
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday renewed her pledge to ensure the United States fulfills its obligations to veterans.
At the Iowa Veterans Home in central Iowa, Clinton said she was glad to be there during the holidays — a time when "we all think about what we're grateful for and where we give to one another.
"Well, no one has given more to our country than our country's veterans," she said. "I believe that when you sign up to serve our country, our country must serve you with the health care, the compensation and the support that you so richly deserve."
Clinton was introduced by Rep. Leonard Boswell, D-Iowa, a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War, who has endorsed her. Outside, the streets were covered with snow and ice after a major winter storm hit the Plains states.

Good Morning Lady Dawn,
I haven't seen you here for a couple of days. I work weekends and don't always have time to check the blogs in the am.
I work with the Doctor that took care of the first KIA in Iraq. I hadn't seen him in a while and he worked the ER last night.
He has a special story because he's was an avid republican, that is until he went to Iraq and saw how Bush II invaded Iraq. He expected that this war would be like daddy bush's war. Bush I put 500,000 soldiers on the ground. The war was over rather quickly. This Doctor was so pist at the way Dumsfield and Scrub Bush handled the Iraq war he got out of the service and is now in private practice. He told me he knows the Bush"s personally and had dinner at the ranch.
He told me that the Bush's are filthy rich and are so totally out of touch with the common man it not even funny. Well, we knew it, but its nice to hear it from personal friends of the Bush's. Well, to make a long story short he's no longer a republican and I'm trying very hard to get him on our side. He's listening.
He just got sick watching all our young man die for Bush's mistakes and mismanagement of the war.
He also went on to say that this troop surge will not work long term because they need way more than 160,000 on the ground.
Incidently, he told me for sure that Bush went for the oil, not to spread Democracy across the earth.
I been reading all the mcburd blogs last night, but I guess he thinks we do not know where snopes.com is. That website tells exactly what those low lifes did the hillary on the very first day of Bill presidency.
Go hillary!!!!

Hi Connie!
Well Larry Johnson makes a pretty good case for the misrepresentations of Hillary throughout the past decade.
There is also plenty of time for the unaware public to get to know here once she wins the primary (if she does). Every time I read something else or watch her I like her more.
The MORE DEMOCRATS especially diss her the MORE I want to vote for her. IT's a knee jerk reaction to those that are stubborn and/or unaware and can't seem to HELP THEMSELVES from dissing her and making up conspiracy stories to link her with the DOUCHES. SHAME ON THEIR LIES!
act I hate it.

One more piece of information about my Doctor friend. He told about a time he was trying to get home from Iraq. He jumped on a transport plane loaded with weapons. The plane stopped in Telaviv first and dropped of half of the weapons and the next stop was in Cairo where they dropped off the rest of the weapons. What in the heck are we doing arming both sides so as to help them fight each other. I thought that this was just amazing. Looks like the capitalists would sell to anyone regardless of the consequences to America.
I also don't believe the media is giving Obama as hard a time as they give hillary. Oh well, she can handle it. Did you hear the last speech that Bill gave in Iowa before holidays. It's fantastic. It's on the net somewhere. Of coarse the Obama supporters voice some of the nastiest comments after every story.

Every presidential candidate whose health plan rewards the health insurance companies by giving them more business via mandates needs to rethink that approach.
The lawyer for California teen Nataline Sarkisyan charged today that the only reason Cigna Health Care officials changed their minds and approved a liver transplant for the desperate girl was they knew it was too late and they wouldn't have to pay for it.
Sarkisyan, 17, died Thursday just hours after Cigna reversed its decision and approved the procedure it had previously described as "too experimental…and unproven." Now the Sarkisyan family hopes manslaughter or murder charges will be pressed.
Their lawyer, Mark Geragos, says he will refer the case to prosecutors for possible criminal charges against the insurer, Cigna HealthCare.
"All of the doctors there unanimously agreed that she needed and should have that liver transplant. And the only entity, if you will, who said no to that in the middle of that medical decision, was some piece of garbage who decided that making a couple of dollars, or saving them a couple of dollars, was worth more than the 65% chance over six months that she would survive," said Geragos.

The McLaughlin Group: Best and Worst for 2007
By: Nicole Belle on Sunday, December 23rd, 2007 at 7:02 PM - PST
The McLaughlin Group did the expected Year In Review episode. Panelists Pat Buchanan, Eleanor Clift, Monica Crowley and Clarence Page give their nominees for the Biggest Winner, Biggest Loser, Best Politician and Worst Politician. Question: who do you see as the biggest partisan political hack in the bunch?

Watching this bunch the past two Sundays, one thought crossed my mind. I actually would rather see Tony Blankley (a disgusting right wing nut) than this idiot Monica Crowley. Gawd she is obnoxious.
All in all, the "awards" were pretty silly. But, it's the silly season.
So,
Merry Xmas again

RJ, thanks for that post. In June of 1999, I had advanced surgery for bladder, prostate and lymph gland cancer. I was on the table, with the spreaders in place for 8 hours. After the surgery, my right lung collapsed.I almost died then. Finally, I was put in ICU, stayed there three days after which I was then in normal care for one day. At the end of the first day the HMO doctor came in and said I had to go home. He said the insurance company would not pay for me to stay in the hospital any longer. Cheryl fought it. The insurance company "gave in" and said I had to go to a mid care facility, they would only pay for 5 days. Then I went home and almost died alone twice. I was saved on both occasions by a home nurse who just happened to stop by at the right time. Cheryl and I wrote about this in our book "Journey Through Cancer Land" where we described people in these insurance companies who get paid bonus' for kicking people out of hospitals too soon and for stopping coverage that is plainly covered in their policies. Cheryl and I sent out over 80 copies of our book to members of Congress, pushing for health care reform. Oh, the insurance company back then? It was Cigna Health Care.

State Senator Jack Hatch Endorses Hillary Clinton
As Momentum Grows in Iowa, Senator Hatch becomes the 21st Iowa Legislator to Endorse Hillary
DES MOINES, IA – As the Clinton campaign’s momentum continues to build in Iowa, State Senator Jack Hatch of central Des Moines, Senate District 33, endorsed Hillary today, citing the superiority of her health care plan. Senator Hatch is the 21st Iowa legislator to endorse Hillary. The endorsement comes on the heels of endorsements from prominent newspapers, including the Des Moines Register, Quad City Times and Burlington Hawk Eye, as well as Secretary of State Michael Mauro, over 100 Iowa women elected officials, and Iowa labor leaders.
“This is a historic election that will have an enormous impact on the direction of our country,” Senator Jack Hatch said. “Hillary Clinton is an agent of change who will enact universal health care and open up great opportunities for women, like my 18-year-old daughter, by making the dream of being president one day a real possibility. I trust Hillary to change our country because she has the strength and experience to enact real solutions to our big challenges. ”
Senator Hatch is serving his second term in the Iowa Senate after winning reelection in November 2006. Before that, Hatch served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1985 to 1993. Senator Hatch is a committed advocate for affordable, quality health care for vulnerable Iowans. Senator Hatch is the co-chair of the legislature’s Commission on Affordable Health Care for Small Businesses and Families.

Merry Christmas, everyone! This was from the front page of the L. A. Times this morning:
THE CANCER DRUG
Cancer Opens One's Eyes to the Many Facets of Marijuana.
Ahh, cancer. One learns so much from being diagnosed with a
death-sentence disease. Of course, 95% of it is stuff you would
rather not know, but that other 5% is downright interesting. For
example, "America's Next Top Model" is much more fun to watch when
you've lost 15 pounds without trying. During chemotherapy, vanilla
smells good, but vanilla wafers taste disgusting. And eyelashes
really do have a purpose; without them, my eyes are a dust magnet.
But the most compelling fact I learned was about my friends. Not just
what you would expect: how they cooked for my family and picked up my
kids and took me to doctors and pretended not to notice how bad I
looked and, most important, that I could not -- cannot -- survive without them.
No, what really shocked me was how many of my old, dear, married,
parenting, job-holding friends smoke pot. I am not kidding. People I
never expected dropped by to deliver joints and buds and private
stash. The DEA could have set a security cam over my front door and
made some serious dents in the marijuana trade. The poets and
musicians were not a surprise, but lawyers? CEOs? Republicans? Across
the ideological spectrum, a lot of my buddies are stoners. Who knew?

War strain in Iraq may speed troop cutsBy Gordon Lubold Mon Dec 24, 3:00 AM ET
Washington - The strain of the war in Iraq is increasingly forcing senior Pentagon leaders to be blunter about the military's inability to sustain war operations indefinitely, a shift in tone that may mean more troops come home sooner...
Why not bring them home for Christmas? With a
truce holding between the warring factions in this civil war, conditions in Iraq will never be this good again.
It would not only be a blessing for the families of our troops who have re-deployed time and again, but it would also be a message to the world that we have learned our lession. We will never again support the forces among us that advocate pre-emptive attacks and torture.
There is no place for either within a free society. It is a tenet of Christianity and all the other great religions of the world. It should be America's present to the world this holiday season much as Jesus was the gift of peace that God bestowed on us 2,000 years ago.
Bring our troops home now..not in another year when Bush decides he needs it to make his legacy look good. Start bringing all of them home now, when it will actually mean something.
Bringing home just one more in a coffin is not right.

Bush's diplomatic passport will acquire a slew of new country stamps during his final year in office as he tries to rebuild the U.S.'s international standing and create a foreign-policy legacy beyond Iraq.
The president plans trips to the Middle East, Africa, Asia and South America, which would make 2008 his busiest year abroad. Warnings Unheeded on Guards in Iraq
By Steve Fainaru
The Washington Post
Monday 24 December 2007
Despite shootings, security companies expanded presence.
The U.S. government disregarded numerous warnings over the past two years about the risks of using Blackwater Worldwide and other private security firms in Iraq, expanding their presence even after a series of shooting incidents showed that the firms were operating with little regulation or oversight, according to government officials, private security firms and documents.
The warnings were conveyed in letters and memorandums from defense and legal experts and in high-level discussions between U.S. and Iraqi officials. They reflected growing concern about the lack of control over the tens of thousands of private guards in Iraq, the largest private security force ever employed by the United States in wartime.
Neither the Pentagon nor the State Department took substantive action to regulate private security companies until Blackwater guards opened fire Sept. 16 at a Baghdad traffic circle, killing 17 Iraqi civilians and provoking protests over the role of security contractors in Iraq.
"Why is it they couldn't see this coming?" said Christopher Beese, chief administrative officer for ArmorGroup International, a British security firm with extensive operations in Iraq. "That amazes me. Somebody - it could have been military officers, it could have been State - anybody could have waved a flag and said, 'Stop, this is not good news for us.' "

Jose Rodriguez may seek immunity over torture tape testimony Hotlist
by smintheus
Mon Dec 24, 2007 at 11:52:00 AM PST
The Sunday Times (London) reports that the CIA official blamed for the destruction of the torture tapes, who was subpoena'd on Thursday by the House Intelligence Committee, is looking for immunity from prosecution in exchange for testimony that probably would implicate White House officials.
Jose Rodriguez, former head of the CIA’s clandestine service, is determined not to become the fall guy in the controversy over the CIA’s use of torture, according to intelligence sources.
It has emerged that at least four White House staff were approached for advice about the tapes, including David Addington, a senior aide to Dick Cheney, the vice-president, but none has admitted to recommending their destruction.
Vincent Cannistraro, former head of counterterrorism at the CIA, said it was impossible for Rodriguez to have acted on his own: “If everybody was against the decision, why in the world would Jose Rodriguez – one of the most cautious men I have ever met – have gone ahead and destroyed them?”

I was upset with the Israelis when I read the headline for this artcle because it appeared that they were running roughshod over the Palestinians, but after reading the whole article I don't believe that is the case at all; rather, they are attempting, correctly, to negotiate seriously from a position of strength. Rejecting Hamas is only common sense. Nothing Hamas says can be trusted and they have proved over and over that all they are really interested in is killing as many Jews as possible. Fatah is a different story. Fatah truly wants to end the bloodshed and a build livable country, but Israel knows that Jews and Palestinians must learn to live elbow to elbow as neighbors if peace is to last whichever side nominally administers a given area. I don't know if you can call 911 for emergency services in Jerusalem, but if you call, you won't care whether it's Israelis or Palestinians who respond, you want whoever is closest. Muslims have to give up Qtube's insane, Nazi dream of destroying Israel and its Jews. Until they do, the Palestinans will continue to fester in misery. The mythology is that the Jews drove the Palestinians into exile, but the truth is that most of them fled of their own accord at the behest of their virulently anti-semetic clergy and rulers, who promised them Israel's destruction and failed miserably to deliver it, and then abandoned them to their fate as refugees for half a century and more. How many Palestinians who have lived in Jordan for fifty years are Jordanian citizens? The Arabs could have ended Palestinian suffering long ago, but they did not and will not. Why Should Israel bear the burden for the suffering the Arabs caused and allowed to continue? I hope the Peace talks with Fatah continue and are successful, but I don't see how the Israelis can be blamed if they fail.
By the way, I am not Jewish.

Hope you choke on a turkey bone, Danny. Gee, it must REALLY hurt you to have your posts fact checked. Oh well. Deal with it. You lie, I fact check.
If you are too stupid to figure out that Letters to the Editor are NOT "news stories" then you're just too stupid for your own good. Your willful ignorance is what has always done you in, and you're too gullible to learn from your own stupidity.
You are the failure that you are simply because you WANT to be a failure. You are too bone headed to learn, so suffer alone.
It's too bad that you and the other Crisco Crowd Cretins have NOBODY who loves them or cares about you or your ilk. YOU brought that on yourselves. No friends, no family who can stand you, no life, no love.
How pathetic it must be, to be you.
I hope your New Years Resolution is to have a long life. We all know that your being such a chronic failure as you have always been means that your Resolution will be broken
With any luck, around January 2.

You can't. On the same track, since your LIE fest is always scrubbed (and you know that) you think you can get away with posting endless B.S. stories in the middle of the night.
Wrong. I fact check and prove what a LIAR you are. Just a small little man making things up.

Mormon FactApril 6, ... is a particularly significant date because it commemorates not only the anniversary of the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in this dispensation, but also the anniversary of the birth of the Savior, our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ.
Since Romney may think Jesus was born on April 6, what does he have to say about Christmas? What year was Jesus born in? I know religion does not matter but if Romney is using Christmas in his campaign does not the people have the right to know his private views on it. If he is a Christian then is there more than one day Jesus was born on?

HEADING LEFT
Get Ready for a Democratic Era
By John B. Judis and Ruy Teixeira
Sunday, December 23, 2007; Page B01
Karl Rove's grandest aspiration was to create a Republican majority that would dominate American politics for a generation or more. But as the effects of his distinctive brand of fear-mongering fade, it's the Democrats who are poised to become the country's majority party -- and perhaps for a long time to come.
Many conservatives have insisted that the Democrats' wins in the 2006 midterm elections, as well as their recent pickups in some 2007 races, were mere blips. They wish. Political, ideological, demographic and economic trends are all leading toward durable Democratic majorities in Congress, control of most statehouses and, very possibly, the end of the decades-old GOP hammerlock on the electoral college...

**************************************************
Dear Michael,
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I'm so grateful to have your friendship and support during this time of year when we all strive to focus on those things that matter most: our family, our friends, and the desire for peace and goodwill.
As 2007 draws to a close, I am hopeful about what we can accomplish for America together. There is so much good we can do with a positive vision for change and the will to see it done.
My wish for the holidays is that I have the opportunity to make a difference for those Americans who have been invisible for too long. It means so much to know that we share that wish and are working together to change our country.
I know you share my gratitude to the members of our armed forces who are serving overseas, separated from their loved ones during the holidays. They and their families continue to make an enormous sacrifice for us all, and I wish them a safe and happy holiday.
I hope that you and your family have a joyous holiday season, full of love and good cheer. Thank you so much for all you do for our campaign.
Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton

Words of founding fathers uniting US
Equality’s “We the people” diversity
Three branch equal Trilogy of protection,
Checks and balances over dishonesty
Corrupting the core with absolute rule.
This Christmas Democracy redefined
Says we must have these Corporate masters
Who merge government jobs with contractors,
Who serve “At Will” to Executive Privilege -
Fortress that is a buttress to Congress.
Federal Courts are denied due process
Laws legislated from Attorney Generals
“At Will” habeas corpus military courts,
One branch rule of this right wing dictator -
Segregating Congress and Supreme Court.
Patriot Act of Totalitarian power
Presidential sentencing human beings,
Denied trials ‘n rights in White House prisons
Using torture redefined human right
Treatments - worldwide water boarding people.
Geneva Convention “At Will” destroyed,
White House evasive recess appointments,
Attack of Constitution’s principles,
Destruction of “We the people” Freedom,
Democracy slaughtered “At Will” tyrant.
We cannot have a Free nation when Congress and the Judicial Branch is denied entry into the Bush White House to investigate the destruction of Data "At Will" of Executive Privilege having been required to be saved by the Federal courts of the Judicial Branch of government without the knowledge of Congress, who is required by the Constitution to protect its citizens from Executive abuse.

A bloggers comment from
NY Times' Dowd echoed Healy's misleading account of Clinton interview
(it seems there are MANY more like me)
--------------------------------
Know what's wrong with the Clinton partnership? The media's obsession with it. Period.
If Bill campaigns for Hillary, he's stealing her thunder. If he doesn't, it must mean that he's jealous and doesn't want her to win. The Clintons are either running from the 90s or trying to remind us of them. Or both, simultaneously.
Every new "story" about the Clintons brings me closer to voting for Hillary over Edwards, my current favorite, just to annoy the hell out of the Clinton-haters in the media.

and while sally tells us that global warming is a fad that will soon pass his holiness in rome ( of the church i was born into ) tells us differently on this christmas eve:
Pope Makes Appeal on the Environment
ROME — Pope Benedict XVI reinforced the Vatican’s growing concern with protecting the environment in the traditional midnight Christmas Mass on Tuesday, bemoaning an “ill-treated world” in a homily given to thousands of pilgrims here in the seat of the world’s billion Roman Catholics.
On the day Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ some 2,000 years ago, Benedict referred to one early father of the church, Gregory of Nyssa, a bishop in what is now Turkey. “What would he say if he could see the state of the world today, through the abuse of energy and its selfish and reckless exploitation?” the pope asked, according to the Vatican’s English translation.
He expanded on the theme briefly by saying that an 11th-century theologian, Anselm of Canterbury, had spoken “in an almost prophetic way” as he “described a vision of what we witness today as a polluted world whose future is at risk.”...

High court asked to review Congress raidWASHINGTON — The Justice Department has asked the Supreme Court to toss out a lower court ruling that says the FBI was wrong to raid Democratic Rep. William Jefferson's office, a decision the Bush administration argues will hinder corruption investigations of Congress.
If the Supreme Court allows the White House to raid Congress "At Will" without warning and/or warrants then Congress and the Supreme Court has the same rights under the Trilogy of the Constitutions checks and balances. To not balance the scales of justice in favor of the Executive Branch, allows it to use unfair intimidation to due process of procedural protections.
The three branches must coordinate together and limit the scope otherwise The FBI would be a tool for the White House to silence critics of its policy. The White House is not an "At Will" Totalitarian Regime who "At Will" can send its people to bully Congress nor the Supreme Court. If that was the case the White Court could order its troops to seal of the Supreme Court just as Pakistan did "At Will" of Executive Privilege of Totalitarian Constitutional power.
The fact is the FBI must be under the capital police in Congress, who must assure the public's interest is protected. Congress might be protecting Watergate type data and the FBI is sent in to secure it where we already know they can destroy data "At Will" of Executive Privilege. The Attorney General could go in and secure whistle blowers data and then terminate those White House individuals.
The White House seeks to right to do anything "At Will" without regards to the Federal Court System and if it is allowed to intimidate the other branches then Nixon would have never been impeached.
With this power Congressional Investigative Committees could be monitored by the FBI where all data would be sent to the White House and thereby force Congress into silence.
Bush/Nixon Totalitarianism is the total destruction of Freedom and Democracy as we know it. Republican Corporate friends could ask a President to intervene to quash the Legislative and/or Judicial Arm by using the FBI to do a Corporate President dirty work to collect data used by the White House to silence critics.
Are we a Pakistan, are we a Russia, are we a Red China, or are we a Constitutional Democracy with scales that balance the abuse of totalitarians like Hitler's, Caesars, Stalin's, and other despots who follow the path of Nixon and Bush.
I can see Congress using the Capital Police and raid the White House. Somehow cooler heads must prevail were a grand jury like setting, takes all three branches and unites them on a Constitutional solution.
How many Presidents wanted to sent the FBI, CIA, IRS, White House Attorney General, White House lawyers into using the Executive Privilege of "At Will" political force. Some may have wanted to invade Congress using its White House Blackwater security plumbers unit and/or its Delta force like Czars has done.
What does the White House think it has the Patriot Act right to work against Congress and/or the Supreme Court to monitor their emails, tape them without warrants, check their cell phone use, and GPS them "At Will?" Does the White House use its Microsoft filters, its Google data, and its Telecoms to silence the Constitution right to defend itself from Executive abuse? Is the White House legislating from the Presidents “At Will” personal wishes? Can we trust any, one human being, to run our country as our savior. Or has history taught US that Freedom and Democracy needs its checks and balances in its Constitution, where it has scales of Justice and in this case a Trilogy that must divide equally working for “We the people” who own this Constitution, not any Corporate or Power Brokered interests.

Now if those panties are threatening to explode; typical example would be from being stretched to the limit by an oversized fat Godzilla ass, then its a perverted pantie issue. Do you understand now?

Gee, Mr. Illogical. How can one prove something that no longer exists? Tell me, PROVE that there were WMD in Iraq Posted by Doo-Bee-Doo-Bee-Doo on December 24, 2007 at 05:04 PM
Hey DoPeyD, YOU PROVE that there were NO WMD in Iraq. You need to widen your horizon a little bit. Do you even realize just how big Iraq is??? And how easy it would be to hide a few containers of nerve gas or something of that nature, in such a wide expanse of desert? Hellllllllooooooooo????

Merry Christmas everyone (except communist asshats and you know who you are PamB, DopeyD and greggy come to mind and those of you who are too dumb to Know better, Pamb and DoPeyD come to mind again and of course Dawney)
And on this Christmas Day and reflecting on PamB's racist comments of a day or so again in referring to Joe Lieberman as Joe Boy which was an obvious reference to the racial slur of Jew Boy, I think it is a good time to remind Democrats of the consistent racism of the Democrat Party going back to Thomas Jefferson.
You can read all the "great" quotes here but here are a few from the modern era:
"Anyone who has traveled to the Far East knows that the mingling of Asiatic blood with European or American blood produces, in nine cases out of ten, the most unfortunate results. . . . The argument works both ways. I know a great many cultivated, highly educated and delightful Japanese. They have all told me that they would feel the same repugnance and objection to have thousands of Americans settle in Japan and intermarry with the Japanese as I would feel in having large numbers of Japanese coming over here and intermarry with the American population. In this question, then, of Japanese exclusion from the United States it is necessary only to advance the true reason--the undesirability of mixing the blood of the two peoples. . . . The Japanese people and the American people are both opposed to intermarriage of the two races--there can be no quarrel there."
--Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1925
President, 1933-45
"This passport which you have given me is a symbol to me of the passport which you have given me before. I do not feel that it would be out of place to state to you here on this occasion that I know that without the support of the members of this organization I would not have been called, even by my enemies, the 'Junior Senator from Alabama.' "
--Hugo Black, accepting a life membership in the Ku Klux Klan upon his election to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from Alabama, 1926
Appointed to the Supreme Court by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1937
"Mr. President, the crime of lynching . . . is not of sufficient importance to justify this legislation."
--Sen. Claude Pepper (D., Fla.), 1938
Spoken while engaged in a six-hour speech against the antilynching bill
"I am a former Kleagle [recruiter] of the Ku Klux Klan in Raleigh County. . . . The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia. It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the union."
--Robert C. Byrd, 1946
Democratic Senator from West Virginia, 1959-present
Senate Majority Leader, 1977-80 and 1987-88
Senate President Pro Tempore, 1989-95, 2001-03, 2007-present
His portrait stands in the U.S. Capitol.
President Truman's civil rights program "is a farce and a sham--an effort to set up a police state in the guise of liberty. I am opposed to that program. I have voted against the so-called poll tax repeal bill. . .. I have voted against the so-called anti-lynching bill."
--Rep. Lyndon B. Johnson (D., Texas), 1948
U.S. Senator, 1949-61
Senate Majority Leader, 1955-61
President, 1963-69
"There is no warrant for the curious notion that Christianity favors the involuntary commingling of the races in social institutions. Although He knew both Jews and Samaritans and the relations existing between them, Christ did not advocate that courts or legislative bodies should compel them to mix socially against their will."
--Sen. Sam Ervin (D., N.C.), 1955
Chairman, Committee on Government Operations, 1971-75
"The decline and fall of the Roman empire came after years of intermarriage with other races. Spain was toppled as a world power as a result of the amalgamation of the races. . . . Certainly history shows that nations composed of a mongrel race lose their strength and become weak, lazy and indifferent."
--Herman E. Talmadge, 1955
Democratic Senator from Georgia, 1957-81
Chairman, Committee on Agriculture, 1971-81
"These Negroes, they're getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference. For if we don't move at all, then their allies will line up against us and there'll be no way of stopping them, we'll lose the filibuster and there'll be no way of putting a brake on all sorts of wild legislation. It'll be Reconstruction all over again."
--Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson (D., Texas), 1957
"I have never seen very many white people who felt they were being imposed upon or being subjected to any second-class citizenship if they were directed to a waiting room or to any other public facility to wait or to eat with other white people. Only the Negroes, of all the races which are in this land, publicly proclaim they are being mistreated, imposed upon, and declared second-class citizens because they must go to public facilities with members of their own race."
--Sen. Richard B. Russell Jr. (D., Ga.), 1961
The Russell Senate Office Building is named for him.
"I did not lie awake at night worrying about the problems of Negroes."
--Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, 1961
Kennedy later authorized wiretapping the phones and bugging the hotel rooms of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"I'm not going to use the federal government's authority deliberately to circumvent the natural inclination of people to live in ethnically homogeneous neighborhoods. . . . I have nothing against a community that's made up of people who are Polish or Czechoslovakian or French-Canadian or blacks who are trying to maintain the ethnic purity of their neighborhoods."
--Jimmy Carter, 1976
President, 1977-81
Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, 2002
"The Confederate Memorial has had a special place in my life for many years. . . . There were many, many times that I found myself drawn to this deeply inspiring memorial, to contemplate the sacrifices of others, several of whom were my ancestors, whose enormous suffering and collective gallantry are to this day still misunderstood by most Americans."
--James Webb, 1990
Now a Democratic Senator from Virginia
"Everybody likes to go to Geneva. I used to do it for the Law of the Sea conferences and you'd find these potentates from down in Africa, you know,
