Good afternoon Dems!
Interesting article. HIllary, please, for the sake of the country, please stop now!

We should pound him on his acknowledgement that he gave information (ship name and mission) to the VC when he was captured. That is treason. He also embraced former VC leaders. Alot of Vietnam vets don't like McCain because of those things.
There are alot of things we can go after him on, Military service should be one of them, especially since he is going to base a majority of his campaign on it.
Posted by Cubilist on March 25, 2008 at 02:27 PM
We should also asked why he admitted that things that were not true. Although the abuse never succeeded in convincing McCain to accept early release, he did break down and sign a confession that he was a "black criminal" and an "air pirate." So, we should ask him why he thinks torture gets legitimate confessions and good intelligence when he was tortured and lied. Unless of course, he didn't lie.

Posted by MARZBAR on March 25, 2008 at 02:43 PM
whose to say those things weren't true. He admitted in his own book that is what he told them.
After being periodically slapped around for "three or four days" by his captors who wanted military information from him, McCain called for an officer on his fourth day of captivity. He told the officer, "O.K., I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain
McCain was taken to Gai Lam military hospital. (U.S. government documents)
"Demands for military information were accompanied by threats to terminate my medical treatment if I [McCain] did not cooperate. Eventually, I gave them my ship's name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant." Page 193-194, Faith of My Fathers by John McCain

Cubilist, your speculation here is on point, at least for me. If she beats him and its on the issues, I can vote for her without question. However, if she beats him with innuendo (is he a patriot)? or racial slights, I can't go with that. When I see the behavior on the race issue it makes me feel that HRC's folks don't give a bleep about my "feelings." Do they think black people will forget anything they did to make Obama less attractive to whites based on his color? S.C. blacks didn't go for Obama until after whites in Iowa gave him the seamp of approval.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times...McKnucklehead is not a problem, in spite of the MSM's attempt to make him one. Relatively little if any attention is being paid to the republican candidate by our democratic party candidates...I don't even think they care where he is. They know he's out there somewhere, but really who cares?
John McCain will suffer the worse loss by a republican candidate in the history of free world democratic elections. John McCain is the Edsel Ford of republican candidates, John McCain is nothing but a pimple on a electoral ass. John McCain is like a movie comment on the back of a DVD cover from the national enquirer. John McCain
is not relevant, is old, suffers early signs of dementia and is three weeks from picking out sizes in Depends.
The "Playbook" on John McCain already exists and within a 24 hours news cycle, his fairytale, make believe, poll results, will cease to exist and John will start his new career pimping condo's in Arizona.

The playbook that Rove used in 2000 to take down McCain? I supposed we could get that out. After all, it convinced Repubs not to vote for him, I know it will work with independents.
We have to get this primary settled so we can take McCain out early.

After being periodically slapped around for "three or four days" by his captors who wanted military information from him, McCain called for an officer on his fourth day of captivity.
That's torture?? Periodic "slapping"?? You call that torture?
When we do torture, we really do torture. Torture is when you make somebody have sex with their roomate and you and your buddies watch and take pictures. Torture is when you hook up the lamp cord to the prisoners balls and turn the light switch on. Torture is waterboarding. Torture is taking a broomstick and run it up a prisoners rectum to take their temperature.
Periodic bitch slapping and worse, he gave it up?
See what I mean? 24 hour news cycle and he's done.

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/25/mccain-housing-speech/
"My friends, let’s start with some straight talk: I will not play election year politics with the housing crisis. I will evaluate everything in terms of whether it might be harmful or helpful to our effort to deal with the crisis we face now.
I am prepared to examine new proposals and evaluate them based on these principals. But I think we need to do two things right away. First, it is time to convene a meeting of the nation’s accounting professionals to discuss the current mark to market accounting systems. […]
We should also convene a meeting of the nation’s top mortgage lenders. Working together, they should pledge to provide maximum support and help to their cash-strapped, but credit worthy customers."
In fact, McCain has consistently voted against mortgage protections and other steps to help consumers fight unfair credit terms. Some lowlights:
– McCain voted against discouraging predatory lending practices. In 2005, McCain voted against an amendment prohibiting law-breaking high-cost predatory mortgage lenders from collecting funds from homeowners who are forced into bankruptcy court. [S. 256, 3/03/05]
– McCain failed to vote on bill to overhaul mortgage lending practices of FHA. In 2007, McCain failed to vote on passage of a bill that would overhaul the mortgage lending practices of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA). The bill would reduce the required minimum down payment for an FHA-insured loan and simplify its calculation, requiring a flat 1.5 percent of the appraised value of the home. [S. 2338, 12/14/07]
– McCain failed to sign on to Truth in Lending Act. Less than four months ago, McCain failed to sign on to this bipartisan initiative providing protection to consumers taking out home mortgage loans. Among other measures, it was designed to “establish new lending standards to ensure that loans are affordable and fair.” McCain also refused to co-sponsor this legislation in the 107th Congress as well. [S. 2452, 12/12/2007]

The first thing we need to go after and keep pounding and keep pounding is his age. I mean please - give me a frickn' break. He'll be 72 years old for pete's sake if he's elected... we need to keep pounding it...

I'll say it again. If we go after the GOP nominee's military service record, we can and will be painted as anti-military and unpatriotic, yet again.
Furthermore, whatever is put out had better be iron clad as well. Remember the CBS debacle with President Bush's military service files? Though the gist of the story (that President Bush ducked military service in Iraq with the help of his father by getting him into the TX Air National Guard and then shirked his responsibilities there) was probably accurate, the firestorm concerning the forged documents overshadowed, by far, the story.
McCain the politician is a much more target rich environment than McCain the sailor. And a more noble target as well. Leave the military out of politics and vice-versa.

That picture shows Wright and Bill Clinton laughing it up after Bill had a re-do of his repenting following revelations of Clinton's Monica Lewinsky sex nightmare. McCain, from the first moments of his capture, had behaved as a COLLOBORATOR and propaganda tool for his North Vietnamese captors. McCain had engaged in no less than 30, and likely as many as 38 anti-American propaganda broadcasts for Radio Hanoi during the period of his captivity. Far from the image of a dedicated American "hero" sweating it out in a North Vietnamese prisoner's "hotbox" for 5 1/2 years, McCain was often given "special" treatment by his captors, who were fully aware of his father's and grandfather's 4 star admiral positions with the Navy. No one has ever witnessed McCain's supposed "torture" at the hands of his jailers.

The CBS story was fairly accurate, it was the some of the documents that were probably forged. As far as McCain's admission goes, keep running that and nothing else. If we're bound and determined to hit his military service, then, IMHO, let's stick to his exact quotes and nothing else. Just because Sen. Kerry (D-MA) got "swiftboated" by a nefarious 527 in 2004 does not mean we have to stoop to the same unethical tactics no matter how bad we want to get even. We are better than that.

Slapping...affectionate, a nurse? What a great fantasy.
While a prisoner of war, McCain was treated as a "special prisoner," with privileges including being given his own private and affectionate nurse.
McCain's treatment as a "special prisoner" is a contradiction to his much publicized image of a great war hero who was severely tortured and kept in solitary confinement for long periods of time because he refused to break during interrogation.

Let's see....A Patriot
By definition..Rev Wright is more of a Patriot than Hillary professes to be. He rebels against corruption and aristocracy...and she, might be part of that.
Patriots (also known as Americans, Whigs, Revolutionaries, Congress-Men or Rebels) was the name the colonists.
Their rebellion was based on the political philosophy of republicanism
It stresses liberty and rights as central values, makes the people as a whole sovereign, rejects aristocracy and inherited political power, expects citizens to be independent and calls on them to perform civic duties, and is strongly opposed to corruption.

McCain said that he agrees with Bin Laden that Iraq is the front line on the war on terror.
But, Bin Laden, IMHO, is only saying that because the longer we are diverted in Iraq, Bin Laden has his freedom, and is almost freely allowed to rebuild his network of terror and the Taliban.

"I just think you have to speak out against that. You certainly have to do that, if not explicitly, then implicitly by getting up and moving."
Here's what Imus said about HRC
I don't think he likes HRC.

And I agree that UBL is enjoying the Iraq quagmire more than anyone else on the planet because all the attention is being diverted from the real War on Terrorism; Afghanistan, the Taliban, and Al-Qaeda.

Let's keep working on your message. It's on target. We'll lose this election if we trash McCain's military service, driving all veterans and those serving and their families right into his arms. Ever since Vietnam, the Democratic Party has been painted into a corner and its patriotism questioned. Whether rightly or wrongly it doesn't matter at this point. Attack the policies but not the man.

That's an interesting thesis - the oil execs and the Administration. Looking at a map of the Middle EAST, by "controlling" Iraq we ensure the security of both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Take these three countries and their proven oil reserves of 400 billion? barrels and energy crisis? What energy crisis? It has nothing to do with supply!
We too often characterize the ruling elites as opposed to change - not at all. Rather they seek to position themselves to "control" that change. Witness BP, Shell, Chevron... They are investing heavily with the profits derived from oil to acquire a strangelhold on all alternative forms of energy so as to sell it back to us in the future, thereby ensuring that their power remains intact.

Good evening, all.
Michael, thanks for posting that photo of Spunky and the new love of his life. McCain and Barney must feel jilted.
Jimmy Steward must feel jilted. McCain does sort of look like Harvey these days. He's so white he could be his body double.
In his continual, confused state, McCain pretty much has been acting like a six-foot-tall, wisecracking rabbit of late, too...just the sort of best buddy Bush has always been looking for.
So Iran is training Sunni extremists and every High Holy Day is Halloween in McCainWorld?

The PBS program, Bush's War, has yet to address this concern but i hope tonight's episode will lay out for all to see the FACT that the iraq invasion WAS ALL ABOUT THE OIL.
Did Big Oil participate in planning the invasion of Iraq?
by Thomas Eley
Global Research, December 11, 2005
It is more than plausible that during White House meetings, oil executives discussed such a “hypothetical” invasion of the defenseless country. The oil companies stood to benefit enormously, and there is no reason to believe that these powerful and well-connected men were unaware that the Bush administration and its coterie of neo-liberal strategists had placed the invasion of Iraq as a top priority. Indeed, the plan to invade Iraq was well known and publicly discussed among the Washington elite for years.

Quite honestly, I really don't care about any candidate's religion or their minister. Those who do, obviously don't respect anybody else's religion...or their own...and that's just plain unamerica.
No one in this country has a right to question another's faith and how they worship.
Instead of criticizing Obama about attending the same church for 20 years, we should all be marveling at the fact that Obama came out of those sermons with such a hopeful message of unity and love for all.
Which leads one to ask where did the GOP Swiftboaters (and now Hillary herself) get their info about Jesus? First they play the race card and now they are dumping on Obama's religious faith?
Perhaps it's time for Obama to do a major address on religious freedom, too? I certainly would bring it up in forthcoming debates.
I may no longer be a practicing Catholic, but I don't want the faith of my youth being kicked around in the coming decades by a bunch of Far Right bigots (and desperate Democratic political opportunists) as Hispanics become a growing political factor in this nation.
That's where this is going and we all know it. It's not the Democratic or American way.

Great observation. Control is the factor behind all forms of rape, personal or economic.

Sandy,
When one looks at how the President starts to age once they are sworn into office, can one even imagine what McCain will look like after a year or two? My Gawd, he will truly look like a cadeaver!
There is no question that a 72 year old man is too old to be President.

why is dubya's library in tx anyways, aren't they usually where the president was born? dumbya was born in ct.

GBGram,
Actually he was born in hell, but Lucifer doesn't want Bush's One Book Wonder polluting his domain.

And for those who do not believe in Global Warming, read this one! No time in History of this planet, has there been the extremes in temperature for this length of time. Past temperature warmings were no where near what they are now! Only small minds continue to believe there is no Global Warming !!
Western Antarctic Ice Chunk Collapses
WASHINGTON (AP) — A chunk of Antarctic ice nine times the size of Manhattan has suddenly collapsed, putting an even larger glacial area at risk.
Satellite images show the runaway disintegration of a 220-square-mile chunk in western Antarctica. British scientist David Vaughan says it's the result of global warming.
The rest of the Connecticut-sized ice shelf is holding on by a narrow beam of thin ice and scientists worry that it too may collapse. .

Please don't remind people Bush was born in this State. We have signs apologizing for this Spawning at the borders entering the state!
My, My, now I wonder what the Chimp-in-Chief will say about the Surge should THIS blow up!
BAGHDAD - Iraq's leaders faced their gravest challenge in months Tuesday as Shiite militiamen loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr battled for control of the southern oil capital, fought U.S. and Iraqi troops in Baghdad and unleashed rockets on the Green Zone.
Armed Mahdi Army militiamen appeared on some Baghdad streets for the first time in more than six months, as al-Sadr's followers announced a nationwide campaign of strikes and demonstrations to protest a government crackdown on their movement. Merchants shuttered their shops in commercial districts in several Baghdad neighborhoods.
U.S. and Iraqi troops backed by helicopters fought Shiite militiamen in Baghdad's Sadr City district after the local office of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Dawa Party came under attack, the U.S. said. Residents of the area reported intermittent explosions and gunfire in the area late Tuesday.
An American soldier was killed in fighting Tuesday afternoon in Baghdad, the U.S. military said. No further details were released, and it was unclear whether Shiite militiamen were responsible.
The burgeoning crisis — part of an intense power struggle among Shiite political factions — has major implications for the United States. An escalation could unravel the cease-fire which al-Sadr proclaimed last August. A resumption of fighting by his militia could kill more U.S. soldiers and threaten — at least in the short run — the security gains Washington has hailed as a sign that Iraq is on the road to recovery.

Pam,
Have you seen any of the John Adams mini series? I've only seen a documentary about how it was made. They patterned all the makeup after portraits from the various periods and are trying to make it as realistic as possile.
But I couldn't help but notice how old Washington looked after taking command of the Continental Army.
McCain wants to be The War President of all time. He will look like the Grim Reaper which is pretty much what he wants to be.
But just imagine how old our service men and women, who will be re-deployed to Iraq a fifth or sixth time by the end of a McCain presidency, will look like.
This election is not about McCain. It's about our military and what the Republicans are doing to the institution and the people who make it work so professionally. It's not healthy or sane.

This is nothing new for the oil companies who, in the early seventies, bought and consequently, sat on, a great many alternative energy patents; one of the reasons I think patents should revert to public domain if they are not acted upon within 5 years of filing.

So I see that HRC just injected new life into the Jeremiah Wright flap. I'm probably back to the ain't gonna vote for her place.
Posted by Veneita on March 25, 2008 at 03:11 PM
Venita,
Don't worry, you won't be tested that way. The super delegates will give it to Al Gore/John Edwards before letting that happen.
No true Democrat purposely drives a wedge between the black or Hispanic communities and the rest of the party and gets rewarded for it...even if they were actually winning, which they're not.
Somebody is showing their selfish opportunistic side again. We had enough of that during the Lewinski impeachment and our subsequent loss in 2000 because of it.
I personally think a Richardson/Edwards ticket would put Bill back in his proper place...right between Bush I and II. Bird brains of a feather belong bonded together in history forever.
later.

This is what this whole controversy should have focused on from the get go... If all Democrats would have spoken with one resounding voice on this controversy we wouldn't even be talking about it. It is about the 1st Amendment...
