Dean: Elect a Democratic President to Bring Our Troops Home
March 19, 2008Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq:
"Over the past five years our nation has lost 4,000 brave Americans, more than 29,000 wounded, and still our troops are caught in the middle of a civil war in Iraq. As our brave men and women in uniform admirably continue to risk their lives, the Iraqis have failed to make the political progress needed to sustain peace.
"On this solemn anniversary, Americans around the country are asking themselves: how much longer will President Bush and John McCain keep our troops in Iraq? How many more brave Americans must die? And how many more trillions of dollars will we borrow and spend before our troops come home?
"We were misled into a war in which the President has continuously cherry-picked the facts and ignored the realities on the ground, with John McCain walking in lockstep to support a failed strategy in Iraq. Now Senator McCain refuses to acknowledge the lack of political progress, or outline a plan for a way forward that will bring our troops home.
"As we look to elect a new president this November, the choice for voters is clear. If you want to end the war in Iraq and bring our troops home responsibly, elect a Democrat. If you want a 100 year war in Iraq, vote for John McCain."
