I am posting this because I just got an e-mail from a radio talk show host I e-mailed saying that she was mainly voting for Hillary because the Clintons are so good with the economy. So, other than Nafta and all the usual, that she can blame on Bill, I went searching to see how she is managaging her campaign funds.
So, just in case someone else is challenged on this---
On economics
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/22/us/politics/22funds.html?ref=politics
spending more than you have coming in and going into debt
isn't that something we want to get away from?
borrowing money, with no apparent ability to pay it back?
borrow and spend?
On top of that, Mr. Obama’s campaign is almost debt-free. He ended the month owing only $625,059. Over all, Mr. Obama has raised $190 million since he began his campaign, and spent $158 million — the most of any candidate.
Mrs. Clinton, of New York, spent less in February — $31.8 million, or $1 million a day — in the weeks leading up to her March 4 victories in Texas and Ohio, than Mr. Obama — who spent $43 million, or nearly $1.5 million a day.
Still, at the end of February, Mrs. Clinton owed $8.7 million to campaign vendors. The month earlier, she had lent her campaign $5 million. While she has $33.2 million in cash on hand, only $11.7 million can be used for her primary effort, with the rest set aside, by federal regulations, for the general election.
Once the outstanding campaign debt of $8.7 million is factored in, Mrs. Clinton has only $3 million in free cash for the battles ahead — one-tenth of the $31 million the Obama campaign has in primary cash

WJC is a skilled politician who says exactly what he means. The smile or gravitas with which he says it gives him plausible deniability.
Even with that Obama has closed the gap. Bill Richardson has answered mark penn's question of what good will he be to Obama now that Texas is over.

allup Daily: Obama Edges Ahead of Clinton
Democratic nomination preference: Obama 48%, Clinton 45%
PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama has quickly made up the deficit he faced with Hillary Clinton earlier this week, with the latest Gallup Poll Daily tracking update on Democratic presidential nomination preferences showing 48% of Democratic voters favoring Obama and 45% Clinton.

This site has an excellent review of money coming in and going out of the campaigns, among other things. It's worth checking out.
Good evening all!
My daughter, Anne, who is 7, is becoming more and more dubious of magic creatures like Santa and the Easter bunny, and the tooth fairy. Today she was asking me all sorts of investigative questions about the Easter bunny, during which time we were also discussing the Easter story. Tonight, while dyeing the eggs, she said, "well, I think I've decided that the Easter bunny is something people make up. I believe that really it's Jesus who comes and hides our Easter eggs so that He can tell us how much He loves us." Then she paused. "Also, I think He does this because He's jealous that Santa Claus has taken over the party about His birth."
Thought I'd share. The deep philosophy of childhood is just so sincere!

The New York Times reports that a top aide to Barack Obama accused former President Bill Clinton of employing "divisive attacks" to promote his wife's candidacy:

it is truly a beautiful night here in the hudson valley. clear sky and warm ( in the thirties but last night it was in the teens ). you can tell spring has arrived as there are little plants coming up like crocuses and so on. we haven't heard the peepers that live in the wetlands out back, that may take a few more weeks or so but we have turned the corner and one of our very best seasons is unfolding.
Posted by gregg on March 22, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Gregg, despite getting 5 inches of snow yesterday, I couldn't agree more! A bit of it melted, and I was relieved to see that most of my little shoots seem to have survived it. The crocuses are probably goners, but I hope the tulips and daffodils bloom. Last year they bloomed for about 2 days and then we got a week long freeze, and then it was too late. Life in Michigan... The robins were back out this afternoon, and it's lovely to look out at 7:30pm and still see some sunlight.

I know that I get really nervous, and just this morning, even though I trust that he knows what he is doing,I sent John Edwards an e-mail asking him to please help.
Do ya think they really do know what they are doing? Do ya think A big gun will come out and endorse, each time Barack is swiftboated, knowing he will be, so as to take the attention off the racism, or whatever they come up with?
Oh geez, while typing flipped on TV and Foxnoise,
Hannity is on----racism racism racism
they are still playing Wright can you believe it? I am now laughing loudly all by myself.
I can only take that for about 30 seconds and get a good laugh. Ykes Newt Gingrig is just tearing Obama up.

I still have the Resurrection Eggs I made when my daughters were young. I'm saving them for my Bella. (I'll tell her the story tomorrow, even if she doesn't know what I'm saying, I know she will feel the love) I'm sure it will be a craft she & I make when she's older.
I always loved to share this story with my girls too.
Posted by Esmeralda on March 22, 2008 at 09:07 PM
Very nice story, Esmeralda. Reminds me of a Garth Brooks song, oddly - Unanswered Prayers:
Just the other night a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into my old high school flame
And as I introduced them the past came back to me
And I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be
She was the one that I'd wanted for all times
And each night I'd spend prayin' that God would make her mine
And if he'd only grant me this wish I wished back then
I'd never ask for anything again
CHORUS:
Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers
She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me
In her eyes too it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn't much we could recall
I guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all
And as she walked away and I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord
For the gifts in my life

I don't know what this is about but I just landed on the Pennsylvania Democratic Party Website
http://www.padems.com/
They had a poll going , so decided to participate.
I didn't know until the last question that I had to state what part of Penn, I was in so I just picked middle.
I did not expect this----going back to see if something else I can do :-)
Here is
Q1 Presidential Primary
If held today, who would you vote for in the PA presidential primary?
71% - Barack Obama
28% - Hillary Clinton
1% - Neither/Other
Posted by highserenity on March 22, 2008 at 09:43 PM
http://www.tribune-democrat.com/local/local_story_075233916.html
He said the Pennsylvania primary “is a lot more important than I thought. I said we’d be irrelevant.
“But on the Democratic side,” he added, “it could make the difference in whether (Clinton) stays in for the convention, or she’s out. If she wins Pennsylvania, it’s going to be a showdown at the convention.”
Although Pennsylvania is not a winner-take-all state and the two candidates will split the 158 delegates based on the percentage of the popular vote, Vatavuk said a strong showing by Clinton could play a role in deciding the state’s superdelegates, elected officials and other party leaders who will have a vote at the convention.
Ed Cernic, a Johnstown businessman and political power broker with close ties to Gov. Ed Rendell, agreed that the region will strongly support Clinton.
“Our local race is going to go really big for Hillary,” he said, pointing to the thousands who turned out to hear former President Bill Clinton stump for his wife Wednesday in Johnstown.
The reason is simple: Under former President Clinton, the country was in better shape economically, said Cambria County Democratic Party Chairwoman Helen Whiteford, a Hillary Clinton delegate.
“Let’s face it, this is a depressed area,” she said. “The population is senior citizens. They see what’s happening. They’ve lived through bad times. It’s frightening.”

He may think it's great! McCain doesn't know the difference between an Arab and a Persian, the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite, doesn't know who is supplying arms to which side (Or sides) in the civil war is Iraq, has overspent his funding limits and in general looks like a disoriented tourist at a flea market: he is probably unaware of it or thinks it's great......John Boy.....
Posted by goodfoe on March 22, 2008 at 11:09 PM
But on a more serious "note" (for those who haven't become tone deaf after listening to the video)... while the media keeps tearing into Obama's pastor, let's take a look at McCain's pastors, shall we?
Reverend John Hagee has called the Catholic Church the "Great Whore." He has said that the Anti-Christ will rise out of the European Union (of course, the Anti-Christ will also be Jewish). He has said all Muslims are trained to kill and will be part of the devil's army when Armageddon comes (which he hopes is soon). John McCain continues to say he is proud of Reverend Hagee's endorsement.Reverend Rod Parsley believes America was founded to destroy Islam. Since this is such an outlandish claim, I have to add for the record, that he is not kidding. Reverend Parsley says Islam is an "anti-Christ religion" brought down from a "demon spirit." Of course, we are in a war against all Muslims, including presumably Muslim-Americans. Buts since Parsley believes this is a Christian nation and that it should be run as a theocracy, he is not very concerned what Muslim-Americans think.
John McCain says Reverend Rod Parsley is his "spiritual guide."

Maybe they should start practising "It's raining McCain" instead. :P

"spending more than you have coming in and going into debt
isn't that something we want to get away from?
borrowing money, with no apparent ability to pay it back?
borrow and spend?"
Assuming we win in November this fiscal profligacy has to end or the much hoped for victory in November will be limited to four years. Putting our fiscal house in order has to be a priority. Otherwise, Social Security and Medicare will be cut! Doing so will also dispel the "tax and spend" Democratic misnomer. There are historical studies that show that Republican Administrations are actually more inclined toward deficit spending than Democratic ones since 1945. But the last eight years have certainly disillusioned many fiscal conservatives on both sides of the aisle. So anything resembling fiscal responsiblity will be a plus.
The tax cuts will likely expire if for no other reason than to help offset the costs of the Iraq War. Up till now, the American public has not felt the impact of the war since it has been funded largely on credit. Allowing the cuts to expire is fiscally responsible and will likely precipitate more opposition to this war, facilitating our disengagement. It will be difficult for Republicans to oppose this when it is couched in these terms. Many a Republican will likely support it. Sen George Voinovich of Ohio is just one example. This could be one real talking point in the forthcoming presidential debates.
Disengaging from Iraq will take place but I don't know if we'll be out in four years. I would hope that this is the case but there are many actors in this equation that all have to come together for this to happen. Obama has said this much already. So, even with this optimistic scenario, we're going to spend at least another 500 billion over four years, if not more... I suspect more when it's all said and done.
The overall state of the economy is anyone's guess. Until the housing market recovers, maybe 2009 or 2010, the Democrats will find themselves severely constrained. Raising taxes in a recession has its limits.
I don't expect much in the next four years. Undoing the damage of the past eight will hobble the new Democratic Administration regardless of whether its Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. These are just some of the structural constraints it will be working under.
Another concern of mine is that the expectations of the populace will be raised so high that when promises made do not materialize they will become disillusioned and vote with their feet in 2012. People I've spoken to seem to understand this. But I'm not sure everyone does.
But I'm putting the cart before the horse. Let's focus our sights on winning in November! We have to have power before we can do anything.
On another point, I've seen that your first pick was Edwards. Mine too for that matter. But he didn't get much traction from his "Two Americas" campaign. He clearly played the "class card" more than any other candidate at the outset. But it didn't seem to materialize. Was it timing? The economy didn't become the primary issue in this electoral cycle until after he had exited.
I have a friend from North Carolina who I asked about Edwards this past fall. He retorted "Right message, wrong messenger". I'd be interested in your thoughts on this...

I may be wrong, but I believe Hagee said that the anti Christ comes out of the European Union which is ruled up to that time by the Whore of Babylon (Church of Rome) The anti Christ would be hard pressed to be Jewish since it is he that signs the seven year peace pact with Israel and then breaks it after 3 1/2 years. But this is all secondary. I refer to Pastor Hagee as "The Walrus that bellows from his pulpit in San Antonio". He has some good points, but I disagree with him on several issues, especially his condemnation of gays. If he is wrong about gays, he himself will face harsh judgment. Back attcha

Rod Parsley is a full blown nut job! Every time I see him, I am transfixed by his eyebrows: looks like Lucifer to me! He..He..I am reminded of the Gospels, "In the end times many will be deceived by wolves in sheep's clothing, even the very elect". Islam o fascism is a threat to this country, but that is only about 5-10 of all Moslems, the rest want the same thing we all want, to live in Peace and a better life for their children.

Your friend might be right, because he is too young looking and too good looking, he is a lawyer, and he is rich. He and Kerry were not a good combo----even tho Kerry has been a hero of mine since Vietnam. they were both a TRUTH TO POWER ticket---just too rich.
I also think John needed to get some new speech writers.
He needed to talk about where he came from, but even I got tired of it.
I kept wondering why he wasn't turning the fact that he is a lawyer to his advantage by talking about all the cases he did and the poor people (without a voice) that he protected. Maybe it was like lawyer/client privilage or something.

I watched part of the video: had to turn it off, too sad to watch. McCain had no idea of what Ron Paul was talking about. In economics, as in many areas, McCain is totally out to lunch. It's sad to see someone this incompetent running for president!
I'm listening to "Austin City Limits" on TV in the background. They just played an anti war song from the 1815 area. I think it was Scottish, very good and still appropriate. Just before that I heard the lead singer say, " and he destroyed the agency with his cronyism" (to much applause) I didn't have to wonder who he was talking about. Austin is refreshing, strongly Democratic in this highly Republican state. Bur we are making progress.

"President Clinton Implies Obama Criticism of US Not Patriotic"
The ones who criticize our Government the most are the ones who love it the most. Given our history and the challenges we face today, how could any American say that our country is perfect? Our Constitution recognized that the country is not perfect, and imbued a system by which the country could improve itself over generations. That is why we have checks and balances between the Executive and Legislative branches, amendments, and a Supreme Court. To say that someone who criticizes the state of our country and recommends improvements as unpatriotic is stupid and counter-productive.
For President Clinton to imply Senator Obama is unpatriotic because he offers a critique of America is contrary to what America is all about. Clinton must have a very low opinion of the average voters intelligence and knowledge of their country, to try to sell this lie for votes.

You sure are in a little snit tonight. A high class waste of your time. Bill Clinton is not running for office and Hillary will most likely not make the cut. It will be either Obama or McCain and my money is on Obama by a large percentage win. I just don't think that your doddering old man who doesn't even know what day it is or where he is is going to do very well in head to head debates with Obama. Obama is young, energetic (which McCain is not) bright, well educated and articulate and when the two of them are on stage together McCain is going to "flame out" crash and burn. From many of your previous posts I have concluded that you are a racist. You better get used to the thought of having a black man as president!
Posted by goodfoe on March 23, 2008 at 03:31 AM
I may have done you an injustice there when I accused you of having posted racially indicative posts. It is hard for me to tell you guys apart, what with the many names you use. The posts I am referring to were posted as "Frosty" or one of the many combinations thereof where he repeatedly used the term "Negro" which I find to be racist as opposed to "African American"
Yes, I am in McCain's age bracket. Older actually, but I at least know the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite, which McCain has demonstrated he does not
I have to disagree: I think Obama will wipe the floor with McCain for many reasons which I am not going to discuss with you because I don't want to help poor old doddering John by telling him what he needs to do to fix his campaign.

In the first place, I'm not a dumass and we are not speaking in Spanish, In English, the term "Negro", the way you use it is meant to degrade. Better get used to the idea of a black man as president!

Rev Wright's comments in some of his sermons have been over the top. But so have the comments of white pastors such as Pat Robertson and John Hagee. So, what? By the time the general election comes around people will be so tired of watching John McCain trip and fall over his own tongue that they will vote for Obama in a land slide!

It is interesting people can reach such disparate conclusions reading something as ubiquitous as a thermometer. I find it difficult to believe the winter temperature of Greenland is 43°F higher today than in 1990. I am told Ohio is 5° warmer in winter and receives 10 in. less snow. Somehow this is not obvious.
There was a convention in New York recently for people who read thermometers differently than main stream scientists. I wish I could have attended.
I accept global warming as a fact. I think it has too much inertia to get it stopped if we wait until we satisfy the entire nay Sayers… All three presidential acknowledge some degree of global warming. We may at least get our country out of denial.
I remember the early environmental struggles. The sky over L.A. was actually orange. It is as hard to believe today as it was then. The sky is again blue over L.A. This may be a source of optimism for those who hope we can stop global warming.v

You did not click on the link. It's a "Military Fictional" story. Has nothing to do with politics. Having a closed mind is a sign of old age. Ripe apples are rotting, green apples are still growing.
You are definitely a ripe apple.

I don't use language like that. You use enough of it for both of us.

Having a closed mind is a sign of old age.
In an earlier post, you admitted to being older than Sen. McCain.

I am older than McCain, proud of it and I don't have a closed mind. I am still very intellectually curious. So, even in spite of my chronological age, I am still a green apple!
"Some types of Apples were breed to be picked"
Were "breed" ???? What kind of English is that????

Breaking News from MoneyNews.com
Rogers Blasts Paulson, Bear Stearns Bailout
You can add Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson to the list of U.S. economic officials who don’tmeasure up in the eyes of investment guru Jim Rogers.
He thinks Federal Reserve policy is turning the dollar into a toxic currency and finds it laughable that Paulson publicly voices support for the greenback while the Fed is debasing it.
"Poor Hank Paulson had a reasonably good education and career as the head of Goldman Sachs,” Rogers recently told Bloomberg.
"Now he’s going around the world making a fool of himself. He says he wants a strong dollar, and then he goes to China and says he wants a weak dollar. And then he goes to Japan and says he wants a weak dollar.”
Rogers also lambasted the Fed and its chairman Ben Bernanke for the rescue of hobbled investment bank Bear Stearns.
"It’s mind boggling to me,” Rogers says. "Bernanke gives more money to Bear Stearns so its executives can keep driving around in their Maseratis.”
"The reason they did it this way is because Bear Stearns paid out billions of dollars in bonuses to its top officials six weeks ago,” he charged.
By Rogers’ thinking, if the Fed and Bernanke had allowed the 85-year-old investment bank to go under, Bear Stearns executives would have had to return their bonuses.
"Who gave him the authority to do that, to destroy the dollar, to destroy the American economy? Nobody ever voted for the man. The Fed is using taxpayer money to buy Bear Stearns executives a bunch of Maseratis,” Rogers said.
Rogers reiterated that the Fed’s inflationary policy makes commodities an attractive investment.
"Throughout history, the place to be when a currency is being debased is real assets,” he tells Bloomberg.
"That’s commodities or other sound currencies like the Swiss franc, yen and (China’s) renminbi. The best place to be is commodities.”
The man who co-founded the Quantum hedge fund with investment legend George Soros says he has been buying agricultural commodities recently, because they are cheapest.
"I own gold and oil. I own all this stuff, and I’m not selling any of it,” Rogers says.
"If the Fed does to the dollar what it looks like they’re doing, who knows how high commodities will go. Oil is just making new inflation-adjusted highs. Gold’s inflation-adjusted high is more than $2,000 an ounce.”
Current Fed policy reminds Rogers of the 1970s, when then-Fed Chairman Arthur Burns "kept printing money to save people. So interest rates had to go over 20 percent, and we had to bring in Paul Volker, who had to take draconian measures and put the country into a serious recession” to stem inflation.
"How much more money does the Fed have?” Rogers asks rhetorically. "They’ve already trotted out hundreds of billions to bail out their friends on Wall Street.”

The author Arthur C. Clarke was buried in his adopted home of Sri Lanka:
COLOMBO (Reuters) - Visionary science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke was buried on Saturday in his adopted home of Sri Lanka, where the nation paused for an international "titan" it had adopted as its own.
British-born Clarke, best known for his work on the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", died aged 90 of respiratory complications and heart failure, which doctors linked to the post-polio syndrome that for years kept him wheelchair-bound.
"We feel so privileged that you left your mark on us. Your footprint will never fade. If anything, it will only magnify what we do," Tamara Ekanayake, who grew up at Clarke's Colombo home and whose family he adopted, told mourners.
Close family and friends wept and threw yellow roses onto his body in a final gesture of respect as it lay on a white bed beneath curved elephant tusks to music from the Space Odyssey movie before burial at Colombo's main cemetery.
His brother Fred and sister Mary watched on as hundreds of monks, mourners and sci-fi pilgrims clasped hands in prayer for a man who preferred the hard fact of science to organized religion.
"I do not think we will see another like him for another million years," said teacher A.S.M Munawwar, who traveled from Sri Lanka's east clutching a signed copy of one of Clarke's books.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who this week called Clarke a "prophet", asked Sri Lankans to observe a minute's silence for the island's most distinguished foreigner as newspapers mourned the "final voyage of a titan".
Clarke left written instructions that his funeral be marked by "absolutely no religious rites of any kind". For his tombstone he asked for the words: "Here lies Arthur Clarke. He never grew up, but didn't stop growing".
