ENGEL: The war on terrorism has been the centerpiece of your presidency. Many people say that it has not made the world safer, that it has created more radicals, that, that there are more people in this part of the world who want to attack the United States.
BUSH: This, this the beehive theory. We should have just let the beehive sit there and hope the bees don't come out of the hive? My attitude is, the United States must stay on the offense against al-Qaeda. Two ways.
ENGEL: What happens if you smash the bees, the hive and let them spread?
BUSH: Excuse me for a minute Richard. Two ways. One, find them and bring them to justice, what we're doing, and two, offer freedom as an alternative to their vision. And somehow, to suggest that bees would stay in the hive is naive. They didn't stay in the hive when they came and killed 3,000 of our citizens.

From Public Citizen:
Last Monday, we asked you to help us in demanding that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) fire three of the more than 110 lobbyists who staff and raise money for his campaign. More than 11,000 people joined the cause.
Today, we can report that your efforts have paid off. One of the lobbyists we demanded McCain fire — Tom Loeffler — resigned as the McCain campaign's finance co-chair over the weekend. Loeffler's firm had received more than $15 million from the Saudi Arabian monarchy and oil interests.
But we're not done yet. Two more lobbyists with ties to brutal regimes — Charlie Black and Peter Madigan — still play prominent roles in McCain's campaign.
These lobbyists, and the associations they bring with them, need to go, and they need to go now. Tell a friend to sign our petition today.
Loeffler's overdue departure came after the McCain campaign responded to pressure from people like you and began questioning everyone on staff about their lobbying backgrounds and other potential conflicts of interest.
But as promising as this sounds, it's important to remember that the man in charge of this review, Rick Davis, is himself a former lobbyist with ties to shady figures.
The only way to keep the McCain campaign honest is to keep the pressure on them — tell a friend to join our efforts today.
Your support has already resulted in a pink slip for McCain's lobbyists. By telling your friends and family about our petition, you can help get rid of the rest of them, too.

« Local and Regional Governments’ Ethical Responsibility to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: the Case of Pennsylvania
The Ethical Duty to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Face of Scientific Uncertainty
I. Introduction
This post examines the ethical duty to act to reduce the threat of climate change even if one assumes there is more scientific uncertainty about the causes and impacts of climate change than those identified by the scientific consensus view as articulated most recently by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
In its fourth assessment in November of 2007, the IPCC made the following key conclusions among many others:
* It is very likely that observed increases in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century have been caused by increases in anthropogenic GHG emissions.
* Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
* Anthropogenic warming and sea level rise would continue for centuries due to the timescales associated with climate processes and feedbacks, even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilized.
* The probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5 percent.
* World temperatures could rise by between 1.1 and 6.4 °C (2.0 and 11.5 °F) during the 21st century.
* There is high confidence (greater than 90%) that there will be more frequent warm spells, heat waves and heavy rainfall.
* There is a 66 percent confidence level that there will be an increase in droughts, tropical cyclones and extreme high tides.
* Both past and future anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions will continue to contribute to warming and sea level rise for more than a millennium. (IPCC, 2007)
Despite IPCC’s conclusions, a number of scientific “skeptics” have continued to attack this consensus position and others have opposed government action to reduce the threat of climate change based upon the skeptics’ scientific attacks. As we shall see, these attacks on the proposed government action appear to be based on the unstated assumption that nothing should be done about the potential serious threats of climate change until damages that are likely to be caused by human-induced climate change have been proven with high levels of scientific certainty.
Yet, even if one assumes that there is considerable scientific uncertainty about timing and magnitude of warming and the nature of human-induced climate change impacts, (and in so doing disagrees with IPCC’s most recent conclusions), ethical issues arise about the duty to take action in the face of uncertainty. The rest of this post explores these ethical duties to reduce the threat of climate change even if one disagrees with the scientific views articulated by the IPCC.

There are barely words for this:
Georgia Republican Party chairwoman Sue Everhart said Saturday that the party's presumed presidential nominee has a lot in common with Jesus Christ.
"John McCain is kind of like Jesus Christ on the cross," Everhart said as she began the second day of the state GOP convention. "He never denounced
God, either."
Yes folks, John McCain was shot down and held captive for your sins. Deification. All the rage in Republican circles.

Breaking News
The Charleston Gazette reports an endorsement deep with symbolism: West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd is endorsing Barack Obama.
From the Endorsement
"After a great deal of thought, consideration and prayer over the situation in Iraq, I have decided that, as a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will cast my vote for Senator Barack Obama for President. Both Senators Clinton and Obama are extraordinary individuals, whose integrity, honor, love for this country and strong belief in our Constitution I deeply respect."
"I believe that Barack Obama is a shining young statesman, who possesses the personal temperament and courage necessary to extricate our country from this costly misadventure in Iraq, and to lead our nation at this challenging time in history. Barack Obama is a noble-hearted patriot and humble Christian, and he has my full faith and support."

freedom as an alternative to their vision.
==============================================
Okay, so this is what the Iraqi people think about Bush's notion of "freedom":
Iraqi Doctor Aisha Abdulla in Falluhah during the second major assault on that city:
"Even if the Americans stay here for fifteen years, there will be no security. The West knows what is happening here but nobody can stand up to the superpower America. Look at this hospital. Anything they do or build is superficial, not fundamental. Abu Ghraib attacked the dignity of the Iraqi people. Did America not become barbarians from killing Indians, Vietnamese, Central Americans, Afghanis, and bombing us and our young children, who now have psychological scars? If these did not reveal the true barbarian nature of America, then Abu Ghraib certainly did. I never liked Saddam, nor did I support him, but at least under the dictator there was order and some basic services. Now, there is no order, no electricity, no fundamental stability".
Dahr Jamail reporting in Beyond The Green Zone
===============================================
This is actually a very common sentiment amongst the Iraqi people. They don't see America as liberators but rather as brutal occupiers.

rj, I have asked this question since the beginning of this whole global warming issue. WHAT IS WRONG with just cleaning up the air and water, period! why NOT make it a better place for our children and grandchildren. What do these fruitcakes who fight it so hard, have against cleaning up pollution of the air? They like the smog, the increase in asthma, unclear vision, coughing, etc? Afternoon everyone! Bob - are you still here? I am assuming that you saw Sen. Webb and Sen Biden yesterday. They were great. I still think that Sen. Webb would make an excellent VP for Sen. Obama. I know that you don't want to 'let him go' but think of it this way. After President Obama serves his two (2) terms with VP Webb, as great as both terms will be (with the help of bullet-proof Congress) VP Webb will be a shoe-in for the next President. What do you think?

(AP) - It was Barack Obama's wow moment. The Democratic presidential hopeful spoke to the biggest crowd of his campaign - an estimated 65,000 people packed into a riverside park for an afternoon rally at a sun-splashed scene on the banks of the Willamette River in Portland, Ore.
Another 15,000 were left outside, fire officials estimated.
"Wow, wow, wow," Obama said as he surveyed the audience. "We have had a lot of rallies. This is the most spectacular setting, the most spectacular crowd we have had this entire campaign."
Obama, the front-runner for the nomination, has begun casting himself as the inevitable nominee and using his time to distinguish himself from Republican nominee John McCain as he pivots toward the fall campaign.
Obama, who is expected to win Oregon's primary Tuesday, has scheduled appearances later this week in Iowa and Florida, two key swing states.
He said he'll use the Iowa visit as another way to focus on November.
"We thought it was a terrific way to kind of bring things full circle," said Obama.
"We still have some contests left, but if Kentucky and Oregon go as we hope, then we think we will have a majority of pledged delegates at that point, and that's a pretty significant mark, that means that after contests in every state, or almost every state and the territories, that we have received a majority of the delegates that are assigned by voters."

As a Vietnam Veteran and a Democrat, he did his job unlike Bush, so he has earned our respect for that. The fact he was a Vietnam prisoner should never be made lite off.
Obama is filling his audience with crowds of over 70,000 in speeches and some say he is unelectable. When is the last time a politician drew a 70,000 person crowd? Can you see him filling baseball stadiums in America in places like New York, California, and other Democratic areas as the Democratic contender. Why going overseas he will have John F Kennedy overflowing crowds all over Europe and the World. America image being repaired where Bush destroyed them.
Obama you need to have a large crowds in a stadium, or large arena in California and New York to prove that you can deliver those states to the Democrats. Do not say anything about the other candidate, but in strength attack McCain with facts to show your leadership abilities.

Warren Buffett Endorses Obama (UPDATEDx2) Hotlist
by Pragmaticus [Subscribe]
Mon May 19, 2008 at 10:22:55 AM PDT
Warren Buffett, the "Oracle of Omaha" (or "Sage of Omaha", take your pick), has endorsed Barack Obama for President.
* Pragmaticus's diary :: ::

Link
As this story is breaking, I'll be updating this diary with more information.
In Frankfurt, Germany, today, billionaire Warren Buffett announced his support for Senator Barack Obama for President of the United States. He said that he offered support to both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama, but because it appeared that Obama would win the Democratic nomination, he is endorsing Senator Obama.
"I will be very happy if he is elected President. He is my choice."
Although many of the super-rich choose to align themselves with Republicans, Buffett, head of Berkshire Hathaway, has been a supporter of Democrats. He was one of Sen. John Kerry's economic advisors during his 2004 presidential run.
Buffett thinks the dollar will continue to weaken:
Commenting on the US economy, the 77-year-old investor who is known as the "Sage of Omaha," stressed that fiscal, monetary and trade policies were of great importance.
"I think that the US has followed and is following policies which will cause the US dollar to weaken over a long period of time," he said.
After voicing support for Obama, Buffett nonetheless noted the US economy had managed to do "awfully well" despite a depression, two world wars and many financial crises.
"They say in the stock market ... buy stock in a business that's so good that an idiot can run it because sooner or later one will," he added.
"Well, the United States is a little like that. We can take a little mis-management from time to time," Buffett said.

This doesn't give him any more super-dels but it's a nice endorsement. Buffet is one of the more reasonable business people.
By the way, the delegate count is now just 112 more for Barack.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrat Barack Obama has a message for Tennessee's Republican Party: "Lay off my wife."Obama, his party's presidential front-runner, and his wife, Michelle, were asked in an interview aired Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America" about an online video last week by the state's GOP taking her to task for a comment some considered unpatriotic.
"The GOP, should I be the nominee, can say whatever they want to say about me, my track record," Obama said. "If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful because that I find unacceptable, the notion that you start attacking my wife or my family."
He called the strategy "low class."
The video, posted on YouTube, centered on remarks Michelle Obama made while campaigning in Wisconsin last February, when she said: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country."
The four-minute video replayed the remark six times, interspersing it with commentary by Tennesseans on why they are proud of America. In a news release that included a link to the video, Tennessee's GOP said "the Tennessee Republican Party has always been proud of America." It urged radio stations to play "patriotic music" during Michelle Obama's visit to Nashville last Thursday.
Michelle Obama later clarified the remark, saying she meant she was proud of how Americans were engaging in the political process and that she had always been proud of her country...

Darn right! Let's stick to the candidates and the issues. And that should apply for both sides in the general election. Michelle Obama is no more running for POTUS than is Cindy McCain.

Pam & RJ:
When posting to these trolls, please keep in mind the following:
They voted, not once, but twice for the worst President/Administration in the history of the country.
They like paying more in taxes to support the richest 1%
They like paying corporate welfare
They think that it is good that 4,000 of our best and brightest were murdered to line the pockets of dickhead and his cronies with gold.
They love the fact that over 20,000+ members of our military have returned home with PTSD and are being denied treatment by the VA
They don't want the returning vets to have any benefits - they like to quote Trent Lott and call these vet benefits 'codling' and 'namby-pamby'
They love paying $4 a gal for gas and love that the cost of living (such luxury items as food, medicine, etc…) has tripled in cost.
Clean air and water for the next generation - they don't care - they have no children because they couldn't find a significant other that was willing to have children with them because they are too stupid.
This is who you are dealing with, so use small words and be sure to pander and lie to them - that is what they really like and respond to.

Bob: I agree with one notable exception, Mrs. McCain should make public her tax returns. Whether they file jointly or not, Sen. McCain does benefit both directly and indirectly from her income and has for many years. Her investments and income may pose conflicts of interest. Filing separate tax returns should not be a loop-hole in this type of situation. As to personal attacks on any family member - that is beneath contempt, just as comments comparing to any member/former member of the U.S. Government to an appeaser pure evil.

British scientists will be allowed to research devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s using human-animal embryos, after the House of Commons tonight rejected a ban.An amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill that would have outlawed the creation of “human admixed embryos” for medical research was defeated in a free vote by a majority of 160, preserving what Gordon Brown regards as a central element of the legislation.
The Government, however, is braced for defeat tomorrow on a separate clause that would scrap the requirement that fertility clinics consider a child’s “need for a father” before treating patients. MPs will also tomorrow consider amendments that would cut the legal limit for abortion from 24 weeks to 22 or 20 weeks.
A second amendment, that would have banned the creation only of “true hybrids” made by fertilising an animal egg with human sperm, or vice-versa, was also defeated by a majority of 63. Another free vote later tonight is expected to approve the use of embryo-screening to create “saviour siblings” suitable to donate umbilical cord blood to sick children...

Remember when the United States used to be the world leader in scientific research? Do you remember when we were the world's leader in innovation? It really wasn't all that long ago.

Cindy McCain is fair game because she is bankrolling her husband. Cindy McCain is fair game because Teresa Heinz Kerry was fair game to the republicans. Cindy McCain is fair game because Michelle Obama is being smeared by the republicans. So, when anyone holds McBush up as some paragon of virtue, I will regale them with the details of how McBush left his wife for Cindy and how Cindy couldn't keep her drug-smeared fingers out of a nonprofit's money jar.
I'd love to play nice...but NOT THIS TIME.

Hmmm, how about we replay THAT statement over and over while showing pictures of Abu Ghraib, images of New Orleans after Katrina, polluted rivers, smog, melting icecaps, fires in Florida, foreclosure signs, etc. and ask if this is what the Gassy Old Perverts are so fucking proud of.

It would be interesting as a CEO if Mrs. McCain's company used only Americans and green card workers, when today Bush is attacking meat packing plants for illegal aliens. We do need to know any First Lady's finances since funds can be transfered between the President and her accounts. Technically she should leave the CEO position, while he is President to avoid conflict of interests views.

It's not bad enough repugnant x-tian reich lied once, now repugnant x-tian reich's are going to attempt to refute their on-air statements with newly discovered documents of meeting transcripts that states, these liars and bearing of false witness, otherwise.
That being wrong does not constitute a lie!!
1) Evidence Tampering
2) Perjury
3) Premeditation
4) Destruction of Evidence
5) Obstruction of Justice
Just to name a few things liars and bear of false witness get caught doing.
Someone needs to start writing and recording video record that documents the inaccuracies, lies, perjurious statements, premeditation, evidence tampering, destruction of evidences, and obstruction of justice in light of the trash books being circulated by the repugnant x-tian reich.

So it is the position of the GOP that we are somehow supposed to think that 9021 Doctors of Philosphy (PhD) have a grasp on global warming? Furthermore, a significant number of these signatures have credibility issues from all accounts.
This is nothing more than a publicity stunt orchestrated by the GOP for the express purpose of undermining the real scientific community and providing cover to big business to not have to spend money on developing cleaner methods of disposing of waste both airborne and otherwise.
We applaud the GOP for their unwavering support of those entities that pollute the planet. Their position is quite clear for the November election though their nominee, Sen. McCain (R-AZ), appears not to have gotten the memo. I'm sure he will soon enough.

This is for scientific research, Sandy. Of course, we'll turn off the reproductive genes. The GOP already breeds like flies in the ranks of the sheeple.

The Charleston Gazette reports an endorsement deep with symbolism: West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd is endorsing Barack Obama.

poet,
Wow, talk about passing the torch. It's like a bridge has finally been erected across cultures
and generations. No wonder young people are so engaged and excited in this campaign.
At times the poetry of life reaches deep within the souls of men and compels them to reach for something new and different...something they didn't know they were capable of doing.
Byrd lived long enough to see the poetry run full circle in his life. He's a very fortunate man. And he's obviously decided to urge others to do the same.
Anyone who says they are going to sit out this election, is lying to themselves.

Rachel Maddow should have her own show.

GREAT IDEA! I absolutely love her. She is so well-spoken. She is clear and to the point. Compare her to man coulter and Rachel is so classy and much more intelligent - not to mention so much more attractive!

Good night fellow Democrats. Keep the Faith and keep the faith. The populist revolution has begun!

The GOP relates to science the same way a woman from the FLDS relates to Abercrombie and Fitch. I'd bet those same signers would put their signature on a petition that says the sun revolves around the earth.

The American Republican Party: The best that money can buy!

Hi Bob,
The environment is one of the most painful issues of all. For decades, Democrats and Republicans agreed that protecting the environment was important. Now, the GOP doesn't care about it. This is one reason why the modern day Republican party is irrational and unacceptable.
McCain has one of the worse rating from groups such as Sierra Club. Sensible Republicans should cross the line and vote for Obama to protect the environment.

He called the strategy "low class."
That pretty much sums up the Republican frat boy/neocon empire. They no longer appeal to even those they consider low class. McSame has nothing new to offer.
We can be do so much better as a nation than what the Republicans insist we must settle for.
The American people aren't afraid to say we are disgusted with what the GOP offers. And, yes we can, change what they forced America to become in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of our own children.
We aren't going there anymore.

A victim of the war within Suicides of Houston Army recruiter and his wife leave questions of struggle that endured after Iraq
Like in starting to look like reincarnated Vietnam in another way, veterans are coming home with mental problems that are being ignored by the White House, and by Congress. They are putting the problems of Veteran stateside coffins under the rug with the Bush War coffins of body bag memories that are hidden against Bush accountability.
Bush legacy of his Intelligence of "Truth" being out right "Lies" in the suicide of reality.
The White House is doing what it did in Vietnam by denying it had a problems with the troops coming home.
While I was not in Vietnam proper very long, but the theater for 2 1/2 years, I had troubles when I got back and had nobody that wanted to help. That is when I started writing on napkins that turned into Poetry of Vietnam Rants for mental therapy.
Like some banned Poetry Vietnam Rants today about Iraq Mission Accomplished. Today the White House is banning Free Speech in ways of releasing the demon within people fearing the "Truth" will come out. The White House does not want any Bush Iraq War Poetry to come out and challenge his faulty Intelligence that gives him his legacy. The troops do need to release their depressions, otherwise the cancer carries a gun from Iraq memories.
After years and years of a War, where soldiers have no choice but to keep it in, and see the Abu Graith like scars of War they build and build overseas, then coming home to the United States they cannot cope. Same thing happened in Vietnam in an endless War, where no one will listen, but will look the other way.
With no programs like writing, painting, or acting out they simply end it all. When Poetry was stolen from me 24/7 and I could not write within my own home, it was like a time bomb waiting to go off. Until I said, I have Free Speech Vietnam rights inside my own damn home.
I now write my depressions in "Living Suicide" where one finds the smallest thing to hope for in a Bush World of His brand of Freedom and Democracy of redefinitions.
Living Suicide is deep depression that eats at someone, but in some way they release the demon to claim another day in hopes and prayers. It is also in the love of others, who do not Judge that they hug America and lift spirits.
Fight for Veteran Suicide prevention programs for Iraq depressions.

With Obama having a crown of around 80,000 in Oregon, what state will set the new attendance record for a Democrat on stage. What is the largest crowd to see a Presidential contender? Can "We the people" beat it. Are these crowds not just crying out, "we need change." They can sing together The Star Spangled Banner or God Bless America together for all to see America changing. What a site that would be worldwide in a positive side of America. they can hold hands in one human chain of unifying our dreams of America. Just an idea for Obama.

With Sen. Robert C. Byrd from West Virginia endorses Obama right before the Kentucky election, does that not say something that a man can change so much in crossing racial lines for a greater love of a diverse America of loving each other as Democrats.
Torture protests at UC law school ceremoniesSome 50 protesters, clad in orange jumpsuits and black hoods to emulate the infamous photos of prisoners in Iraq, picketed UC Berkeley's law school graduation ceremony Saturday, demanding that the university fire Professor John Yoo for his authorship of the Bush administration's policies on torture.
"We want to see him fired and disbarred for being a war criminal," said Anne Weills, an Oakland attorney who said she was with the National Lawyers Guild, one of the groups that protested. "Academic freedom stops when you intend to harm or injure somebody."
I did not know he was tenured, but I still think he should not be teaching Constitutional law allowing torture, and a warrant less Patriot Act. That his Conservative Bush ideas are treason to the Constitution and the Separation of Power principles of our government.
I think the University of Berkeley should have a mock trial with one side supporting John Yoo and Bush; the another siding with the Constitution under John F Kennedy.
I think that John Yoo is much more dangerous as a Conservative Bush torture proponent, when he is teaching abuse as a acceptable procedure in our colleges. Much more dangerous than almost all Liberal professors. The fact that John Yoo is at Berkeley floors me. So maybe we need to remind more people of Abu Graith, and the abuse of law at the Executive branch of power.
Ward Churchill was fired on 24 July 2007 for research misconduct. So John Yoo can be fired for Constitutional and Civil Liberties misconduct at Berkeley and at the Bush White House. To think that Berkeley teaches this brand of Constitutional values is frankly treason to our founding fathers words for "We the people."
John Yoo also allowed the White House to use "At Will" warrant less searches with the Telecoms against Civil Liberties Protections of the Constitution. With John Yoo Americans have not any rights.
I know I would not want to attend one of his classes if I was a patriot lawyer. Maybe the Red Chinese can attend or the Koreans, they had a brutal form of government for awhile.
