Blue, (Or anyone who might know the answer)
Is there any action that Rep. Pelosi or Sen. Reid could take at this time or in the not too distant future to ensure 'blanket' pardons can not be issued for Cheney, Rove, etc.? Aside from Impeachment, that is.

sheesh, I wonder where the RNC will get this money? certainly not from their greedy little voters. The corporate CEOs and lobbying firms have switched gears and are giving to Democrats now. Where oh where will they get the cash??? Maybe John McCain's gal Cindy will sping for a few bucks from that well guarded account she has hidden.

marymac, I believe Presidential pardons are something NO one can over ride. If that was the case, all those that Clinton pardoned would never have happened.
Posted by PamB on May 19, 2008 at 06:45 PM
Pam,
Dick Gregory was just running that clip from "Saturday Night Live" where McCain was telling the weekend anchors (presumably Democrats) to just keep fighting amongst themselves.
It was really very clever satire. But I have a problem with one of the actors. He seemed kind of old and stiff. Who was playing McCain?

Aside from impeachment, I'd say no. The pardon power comes from the Constitution, and although Bush and the republicans don't honor that document, I'm sure they'll be able to find that particular provision when the time comes.
From what I understand, Congress has attempted to limit the pardon power in the past without success.
Posted by BlueinIdaho on May 19, 2008 at 06:50 PM
Thanks Pam and Blue! That's what I thought. I knew that specific pardons (lots of them controversial) could not be over-ridden but I had hoped that something could be done to prevent any non-specific, blanket type pardons - or can those even be done? Even if they can't, I'm pretty sure the current administration will find a way to prevent future prosecutions.
Oh - and by the way - over the weekend, I signed up 11 new voters!

Got a kick out of some of the names. Perry Mason,PHD, MIchael J Fox PHD, Gerri Halliwell (aka Spice Girls) Phd.
What a fun list...send us a petition..we can make up a whole bunch of names.

Hey, Dave, did you see McBurd or Harpo on that Ph.D. list?
Thanks for sharing with us the latest efforts of the administration's Liberty College grads. Frosty so often doesn't offer any links much less posts anything but Heritage Foundation press releases.
So the Republican interns are amusing themselves these days by making up fake names for fake peititions.
Attention RNC: Use your pets names in the future. And be sure to have their photo I.D.s ready for verificaion. Valid rabies papers are not enough.

The Vatican just said it was O.K. to accept the existance of aliens...not just the illegal kind. So you Far Right doorknobs are not alone. You and your climate change experts share a lot in common with The Elf...and apparently also with the Spice Girls.
What's the name of that Martian that Daffy Duck is always chasing around? You should also get a quote fom him, too, about global warming. I believe he's a scientist from the Red Planet.
Posted by SandyH on May 19, 2008 at 07:43 PM
Some claimed the petition was riddled with duplicate names. They were no duplicates, just different scientists with the same name. Some claimed the petition had phonies. There was only one phony: Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, planted by a Greenpeace organization to discredit the petition and soon removed. Other names that seemed to be phony - such as Michael Fox, the actor, and Perry Mason, the fictional lawyer in a TV series were actually bona fide scientists, properly credentialled.
Why weren't their affiliations listed? Ph.D.s do not sign their name to public documents without identifying who they are. It isn't done that way in the professional world. They are very proud of their degrees and educational posts.
Go back to the drawing board. Better yet ask your dog to add its paw print to your next petition and add his pedigree to impress us.

How many cars does one have if they have 8 or 9 houses (Cindy McCain can't recall exactly how many houses they have)? Just a wild guess, but I doubt anyone with that many homes thinks much about the price of gas for either their cars or their private jet. Heck, they can own their own oil well with that kind of cash.
Oil closes at $127.05. Would "lower taxes and less regulation" help here too?

It's clear Obama is our nominee. Ao, let the healing process begin. In fact, Hillary may be our veep candidate if she wants it.
Good article from Arianna Huffington:
A front page story in today's New York Times wonders whether Hillary Clinton's flagging run for the presidency is "a historic if incomplete triumph or a depressing reminder of why few [women] pursue high office in the first place."
Let me quickly weigh in with an unequivocal vote for "historic if incomplete triumph." And the only thing I find depressing is that the answer is even in doubt.
I have regularly criticized Clinton over the course of her campaign (and long before it, starting with her vote to authorize the war), but there is no question that she has forever altered the way women running for president will be viewed from here on out. In the words of the Times, Clinton has established "a new marker for what a woman can accomplish in a campaign -- raising over $170 million, frequently winning more favorable reviews on debate performances than her male rivals, rallying older women, and persuading white male voters who were never expected to support her."
She has also forever demolished the question mark hovering over the issue many (wrongly, in my opinion) have felt would be a woman candidate's biggest weakness: the ability to be seen as a plausible commander-in-chief.
It is to her great credit that very shortly into the '08 race, when you saw Clinton on television, you didn't think, "Oh, there's the woman running for president." That is no small feat for a woman trying to break into a male-dominated arena. So the next time a woman -- or two or three -- runs for president, it won't be seen as a novelty act. Because Hillary certainly wasn't.
But the greatest triumph of Clinton's campaign -- a complete triumph -- is the example she has set for the next generation. And not just for young women; her dedication, perseverance, and indefatigable drive make her a role model for young men as well.

chimpenfuhrer's propaganda minister is stepping over the line complaining that NBC misrepresented the economy by saying we are in a recession and calling bush's war in Iraq a civil war.
They were just telling the truth. Hitler (chimpenfuhrer's twin) kept a tight rein on his propaganda Goebles (gillespi).
chimpenfuhrer is stepping over the line critisizing the press. I wonder when the head of NBC will be sent to Guantanamo to be tortured to death or be sent to one of cheney's concentration camps in Iraq.

This is how it's going in McCain's Iraq occupation:
BAGHDAD — Suspected Sunni insurgents ambushed a minibus carrying Iraqi police recruits near the Syrian border Monday, killing all 11 passengers, Iraqi officials said _ the first deadly attack since Iraqi forces launched a major sweep against al-Qaida fighters in the region.
The hail of gunfire came hours after Iraqi officials said they arrested a man suspected of being al-Qaida in Iraq's chief leader in the northern city of Mosul, the terror network's most prominent urban stronghold.
The attack, the bloodiest in months against police, left the minibus riddled with bullets in the desert west of Mosul, where the crackdown has been centered. Some al-Qaida fighters are believed to have fled the city toward neighboring Syria.
Police discovered the bodies of the police recruits and their minibus near Baaj, a remote town 20 miles from the Syrian border, according to a provincial official in Baaj and a Mosul police officer. The policemen, most from Baaj, were returning from their recruitment camp, they said.
It appeared a large group of insurgents had ambushed the minibus with a spray of gunfire. Nine bodies, including the police driver's, were found still in the vehicle and two on the ground outside, the two officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

By: Bill W. @ 12:00 PM - PDT
It’s been more than a year since Brave New Films released its first The Real McCain video, ‘John McCain vs. John McCain,’ long before the Free Ride McCain enjoys from “his base,” the corporate media, helped him coast relatively unscathed to the 2008 GOP presidential nomination. Well, BNF has now come out with a sequel and it’s a good one, showing just how far off the rails the Straight Talk Express has gone. So, without further ado, we give you The REAL McCain 2.

"Come and listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed,poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed, and then one day he was shootin' at some food, and up from the ground came a bubblin' crude!"
Associated Press
SELMA -- An eastern Indiana man is capitalizing on high crude oil prices with a backyard oil well that produces three barrels of crude a day.
Greg Losh told WISH-TV in Indianapolis that the oil his well produces comes from the Trenton oil field that fueled the growth of east-central Indiana cities more than a century ago.
He said it costs about $100,000 to drill an oil well, but that at today's oil prices, it's worth it. Losh expects to drill four more wells soon on his property in the town of Selma about 55 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
"It's a money maker," he told WISH.
Losh says the oil is stored in a tank and transported to Ohio for sale. His oil well also produces natural gas to heat Losh's home and several others.

The fact that CNN is spinning that dems are weak on foriegn policy and defense is a joke to anyone who has a mind.
Republicans have failed the american people in every way. If CNN wants to gamble on staying in business by playing to uneducated people, newsflash, uneducated people don't watch CNN. The GOP Legacy: Weak Economy Is the New Normal Hotlist
by SusanG
Mon May 19, 2008 at 09:55:17 AM PDT
Thanks, Republicans! We couldn't have done it without you!
Companies will continue to struggle to raise cash for expansion and innovation as investors and lenders remain focused on conserving capital. Workers, too, may have less flexibility to go after new opportunities, because many will be stuck where they are -- in homes worth less than the balances on their mortgages.
Once you've made terrible, overly optimistic errors, that paralyzes you for some time,'' says economist Paul Samuelson, a Nobel laureate.
The bottom line: The U.S. may have to get used to a new definition of normal, characterized by weaker productivity gains, slower economic growth, higher unemployment and a diminished financial-services industry.
"Terrible, overly optimistic errors" is a motto that could be applied to pretty much any area touched by the Republican majority under the Bush administration. But hey! Working America's pain is someone's gain!
The rich splurge on bargains
As rates fall, time is right for deals
For the class of rich who make more than $1 million a year and have several times that in the bank, the time is right for indulgence. Falling interest rates have made luxury goods cheaper to buy, and the items, which tend to be considered investments because they retain their value, are proving attractive alternatives to the volatile stock market. There is also the foreclosure factor: A growing number of high-end boats, cars, and homes have been foreclosed upon by banks and can be had for cut-rate prices.
And it just so happens that if you're a cousin of the current President of the United States, things are downright sunny!
Jonathan Bush, president and chief executive officer of Athenahealth Inc., a Watertown-based medical billing and electronic medical records firm, took his company public last year and said the outlook is sunny.
To that end, he said he has donated money to nonprofits that he said he has wanted to support for many years, and he recently purchased a house in Cambridge's Hubbard Park. The price was $3.1 million, according to the Middlesex Registry of Deeds records.
For the vast, vast majority of Americans, alas, it seems the sun won't come out tomorrow.

Talk about genocide. And now the Republicans are at it again. I wonder if the Great Republican Depression of 2009 will have the same result. The storm clouds are starting to appear the same as they did in the early 1920's when the Republicans were in power up until we kicked their asses out of Washington. Republicans are too stupid to learn from history and will repeat their 1920's performance whenever the can. They must be declared a toxic organization, i.e. a subversive terrorist organization and an enemy of the middle class.

“Few people know about five million American farmers (about a million families) whom banks ousted from them lands because of debts. The US government did not provide them with land, work, social aid, pension – nothing,” the article says.
“Every sixth American farmer was affected by famine. People were forced to leave their homes and go to nowhere without any money and any property. They found themselves in the middle of nowhere enveloped in massive unemployment, famine and gangsterism.”
================================================
JE, great article! I truly didn't know about this. It's very believable. There is a pattern that repeats itself throughout the world where people have been subjected to this vicious "free enterprise" agenda ... code word for big corporations allowed to rip everyone off and muscle the small guy off their land. You can find this pattern throughout Latin America where the GOP instituted a vicious free trade rip off agenda. Latin America has finally rebelled against it which is why the GOP-PERS hate Chavez.
Keep in mind though that there were extremes on the left. Mao is no angel either - he managed to starve millions of his people to death.
The best answers lie in between. Authoritarian government whether it be left or right oriented is generally dangerous.

Eric Alterman has a new book out:
Where Does American Liberalism Stand Today?
By Eric Alterman - May 19, 2008, 9:36AM
Well, first off, thanks to TPM for doing this. Since publishing my first book sixteen years ago and being spoiled with spots on the Tonight Show, Today Show, Nightline, Larry King, four or five national NPR programs, etc, etc, I've watched the cultural space for non-fiction books in the media all but disappear. The privilege of an opportunity for a discussion like this one is therefore all the more precious and yet another argument for the necessity of the blogosphere in light of the abdication of so much of what was once the responsibility of the MSM.
That out of the way, here's what I'd say about my book to this particular audience. Why We're Liberals is really two different books, both of which are aimed at two different audiences. The first book tries to explain what liberalism is, what it might look like in power, and how it (and its proponents) ended up in the situation in which we find ourselves. That's about a third of the book. The second, longer, book-inside-a-book is an attempt to subject what I take to be a series of contemporary conservative-driven morsels of conventional political wisdom to scrutiny and demonstrate that most of what our discourse assumes to be true about liberals is actually far truer about conservatives. They, not we, are pro "big government." They, not we are pro "judicial activism." They not we, are disdainful of the military, both as individual soldiers and speaking institutionally, etc, etc. The idea is both to convince the unconverted but no less give the rest of us the detailed information we need to know what we're talking about in our discussions and debates.

What is up with Feinstein and wide stance slipping some amnesty or work visa stuff for illigeals in the farm bill. If anyone knows about this, can you explain. This is the very s__t that makes dems look bad and gives the GOP a real gripe against us. It's border security first, moderate dems believe that is a priority for a soveriegn nation. Moderate dems want a reasonable approach before any more visa's, we can't keep track of, and amnesty. If this is true, it is a huge mistake and will play out to hurt the dems badly. Good Grief can't they do anything right over there in the senate?
Posted by newsjunkie on May 19, 2008 at 09:38 PM
What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal"? If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then . . . we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the -people--their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties--someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

Pravda has a lot of interesting articles and the translation is a lot better than the Izvestia site.
They don't just report about the latest travails of Hollywood "stars".

It's a time old problem in California.
Yes, I believe in border security.
No, I don't believe in rounding them all up and kicking them out.
Yes, we have to come to terms with "unverified residents" one way or the other. They shouldn't leap frog the queue of people coming in the right way though.
No, the GOP will not be able to use the issue because they are hungry for "temporary visa workers" to appease their business interests.
Only the Tancredo crowd takes a hard line ... McCain certainly doesn't. So, where's Tancredo now? I heard he is retiring from the House.
Prediction - immigration will NOT be a major issue in 2008. The GOP tried to make it a major issue in 2006 and it failed.
The economy is a major issue - especially gas prices.
Iraq is a major issue as instability in the middle east is a major cause of the rising gas prices.

The American Farmer: What Happens When He Is Gone? Part II
mobydick1036's picture
By mobydick1036 - Posted on April 7th, 2008
Tagged: Better future
The second and last part of the farming debate.
The fourth consequence of losing the American farmers is the loss of America as a super power. America is not only a super-power because of its awe inspiring military might. It is also a super power because it is self sufficient in providing itself with its own food. If America had to import food, it would show the world that this mighty country has to beg and grovel for scraps from another country. Without food, a populace can become discontent and abusive. Other countries would see that and could think, “If America can not even keep its own country in order, why should we trust it to protect and help us in times of trouble?” Just as OPEC controls America’s oil intake and prices, another country would control our food prices.
The fifth consequence is that if an economic depression occurred and there is a lack of farmers, a famine would ensue. America’s economy appears to be in a dangerous lull. One can hear on the news how the American dollar is depreciating in value and how the stock market is not stable. If an economic depression occurred, everyone would lose the money they have in the bank and stock market. Food could not be bought, but grown and bartered. Imagine, also, a decreased amount of farmers in America. The only food that could be consumed would be food that is grown in the United States because our government could not afford to import food. This very scenario occurred in the early 1900’s and is known as the Great Depression. Professor Gerhard Rempel of Western New England College had this to say about the Great Depression, In 1933 the world acreage devoted to wheat, rice, rye, maize, barley, and oats was larger than in 1929” (Rempel, para. 10). This information implies that farmers were growing enough food so that millions would not starve. Professor Rempel also stated, “As six out of seven human beings depended on cereals for most of their nourishment, this gain in agricultural production was a matter of the utmost importance” (Rempel, para. 10). If America slipped into an economic “coma” with the lack of farmers that it has today, many people would not able to afford foods such as wheat and corn.'

The stock market has nothing to do with america. Notice the pain in america, and the stock market is up. Fires in CA, floods in NO, stock market was up today, every day. The run on bear sterns was stopped by the republicans with the taxpayers money and the average voting republican and democrat doesn't even know about it or understand it. Instead ,republican dominated airwaves are blaming "people buying too much house." "How dare they walk into that mortgage co and get more money than the mortgage company knew they could pay back."
This is the deal - we must win this election. Hillary is tainted, not much better than McCain. Half the voting public are mis or uninformed. Half the voting dem's don't even know hillary is tainted. Border security is big, because it is something people see in their own back yard. Lobbyists, the avg. person doesn't really get it. Too far away from home. The illegal working on the house down the street and in line at the dollar general, buying stuff with tax free earnings, they get that.
I want to win - we won't be able to take the absolute high road. Witness Feinstein. I'd love it if barack could win without hillary, but the more I see and hear the more I think he has to put her on the ticket. The price of a loss is too high not to. We can not loose this election and the media is on the republicans side. We are going to have to compromise.

With Bush we have Vietnam reincarnated, a Hoover depression reincarnated, and King George reincarnated, I think we have America in recession of moving backwards in time of working US into slavery wages of poverty's Royal bankruptcy of Revolutionary tears needing Liberals, who were called patriots then, shouting their Declaration of Independence.

IT'S TIME FOR A NIGGER IN THE WHITE HOUSE TO SAVE AMERICA FROM WHITY MCCAIN=WHITY BUSH WHO THINKS WITH HIS GUT!
DON'T GET COMFY DEMS, CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS *THRIVE* ON HOPELESSNESS BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE THAT THEY COULD ONLY COME TO POWER THROUGH GIMMICKS (A LA ROVE) AND THAT THERE'S ALWAYS A GIMMICK OUT THERE THAT WILL FOOL THE LEMMINGS AND PUT REPUBLICANS BACK ON TOP, NO MATTER HOW CRIMINAL AND INCOMPETENT THEY HAVE PROVEN TO BE....AFTER ALL, THOUGH A SMALL MINORITY, THEY HAVE THE BIGGEST SHYSTER ENTREPRENEURS DESPERATELY COMMITTED TO THEIR SIDE....THEY KNOW THAT ONLY IN HEAVEN CAN THEY LOSE, BECAUSE THAT'S THE ONLY PLACE WHERE DEVILS LIKE THEM CANNOT RULE!
Looking at the polls one has a well deserved sense of satisfaction after repeated panic and crisis. After all, we survived the equivalent of botched abdominal surgery without anesthesia with GW Bush as surgeon, using an egg beater instead of a scalpel....so what else could possibly go wrong? The answer is based on several facts:
(1) well entrenched Democrat politicos are as crooked as the in and out White House and Capitol burglars of the Republican Party.
(2) So, these old Blue-dogs fearfully prefer a deal to a fight over correct legislation. As VP Cheney once said: you can always tell a Democrat trying to bargain in order to cover-up his shenanigans by the high-anxiety armpit odor he emits.
(3) One hand washes the other type Democrat politicos hate Republicans who switch parties on principle more than anything else because such driven "loose cannons" can either expose them accidentally or find out what they are doing and scream out with the same fervor with which they switched parties.
(4) But still, they hate YOUNG Democrats even more than anyone else because young Democrats are ACTIVISTS who they really care and preceded activism with a moral commitment with no limits on effort, so they can't be bought nor mollified. That's why, though as crooked as the Republican Party at the top, the Democrat Party has historically been progressive and revolutionary, responsible for empowering little people whom our society originally meant to be dog food for Blue Dogs and big Red Corporate ones too, because the YOUNG Democrats at the bottom always stirred the crap at the top, breaking it loose and dislodging it.
(5) Most Americans do not want leaders, they want prophets who will take them on a stroll to Paradise. In time of war, they want to be entitled to all the benefits of a GI Bill, along with the GIs who fought for their country, at the mere cost of occasionally saying to a soldier: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. All this is the new American Boomers' circumstantial culture of convenience. It really comes from living in the only country in the world whose shores have suffered more from violence at its own hands than at those of invaders.
EVEN 9/11-- WHICH WE LIKE TO BLAME ON AL QAEDA'S "EVIL CUNNING," IN FACT WAS TOTALLY THE FAULT OF THE AIRLINES BECAUSE THE LAWS PASSED AFTER A SERIES OF SKY-JACKING IN THE 1970S WERE TOTALLY DISOBEYED BY THE AIRLINES IN ORDER TO SAVE A FEW PENNIES. Back then, it was decided to make the pilot's cabin impenetrable so no one could take over the aircraft, and two "sky-marshals" were to be placed on each plane for missions I'd rather not discuss openly. But the airlines execs were looking for cuts where they could save pennies. It became a sort of corners-cutting game-- whose consequences were a rather unintended but very predictable prize. The day after 9/11, on the one occasion when the question of access to the pilot's cabin came up on a TV interview, an airline exec, confident that not much effort thinking is needed to assuage the dumb TV watching peasants explaining why the pilot's cabin door is always kept open, in violation of FFA safety rules; he sarcastically said: Look, the people in First Class pay a lot of money for that seat so they have a right to see that a human being is driving the damned thing.#$@@#%%^$&&**(()+$##%% (expletives deleted)
AND HERE *I AM* SHOUTING! TO THIS DAY-- AS IF EVERYONE WERE DEAF-- WE ARE STILL ATTRIBUTING 9/11 TO A DIABOLIC AND BRILLIANT HIGH TECH INTERLINKED WORLD-WIDE "ISLAMOFASCIST" EVIL OPERATION THAT SPENDS DAY AND NIGHT FIGURING OUT NEW WAYS TO KILL US ALL.
I can understand Bush saying such feces because, after all, he repeatedly told us in pride that he does all his thinking with his gut. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER 300,000,000 AMERICANS? DO ANY THINK THROUGH THIS FACT WITH THEIR HEADS? MOST DON'T EVEN WONDER ABOUT 9/11 ANYMORE. YET, THEY GO BERSERK WHEN THEY HEAR THAT "THE FEDS DID IT" FROM 9/11 CONSPIRACY BUFFS. There are a lot of kooks out there but why are all those who question the Keane Commission Report physically assaulted by the stampeding Viagra-bulls who constitute the hear no evil-see no evil- speak no evil grassroots that both parties appeal to on election day? And when that skinny viper Conservative Queen of the hyperbolic vindictive, Ann Coulter the bulimic, "purges" with projectile vomiting of conspiratorial words instead of strips of beacon and chucks of BigMacs, attacking those who wonder out loud how could such a thing have happened, President Bush, they are stomped on by the very Democrat Viagra steer stampeding in rage at the supposed lack of homage to the victims by questioning the Bush Administration "intelligence" (sic) agencies (make that bureaucracies). All this despite the rage of the families over the COVER-UP by the Kean Commission of how it all could have been avoided.
AND NOW, AFTER TWO TERMS OF BUSH, THE AGING POT-HEADS, ACID-HEADS, COMMUNE PASSING OF VD INFECTIONS "HIPPIES" OF THE LONG GONE 60S WHO LATER FOUND JESUS SO THAT GOD REWARDED THEM BY MAKING THEM SUCCESSFUL SHYSTER ENTREPRENEURS-- DON'T REALLY THINK THEY CAN VOTE FOR THAT TALL (they admit), HANDSOME AND MANLY (they admit), VERY GLIB, REASONABLE AND MOVING (they admit) AND OBVIOUSLY WELL BRED, WELL EDUCATED AND WANTING NATIONAL UNITY, NOT JUST PARTY UNITY, TO ELECT HIM (this too they admit). Why not? BECAUSE-- OH MY GOD!!!!!-- HE'S NOTHING BUT A GOD DAMNED NIGGER TRYING TO GET LODGINGS IN THE *WHITE HOUSE. That's what this election revolves around. So far, the candidates were never really given a chance to raise issues of philosophy, priority, diplomacy, strategy or economics.
THE MEDIA HAS FINALLY GOT ITSELF A BOY BITES DOG STORY.....THIS ONE IS "BLACK APE NAMED OBAMA AND ITS ANTI-WHITE SUPERIORITY FEMALE MATE APE, MICHELLE, OF SAME LOWER PRIMATE SPECIES ARE DISGUISED IN CLOTHES OF WHITE HUMANS SO THEY CAN SNEAK INTO THE *WHITE* HOUSE." And furthermore, doesn't Reverend Jeremaya Wright look a lot like that chief-ape from the movie "Planet of the Apes"?(such white all Americans never read the book, they just see the movie instead) Yep, and what proves the case is that he's a Muslim named "HUSSEIN"-- a typical suicide bomber name, hidden between the names "Barak" and "Obama," thus perfectly hidden; but we weren't fooled! We know that he's the anti-Christ that wants to turn over Israel to HAMAS and our oil wells to HEZBOLLAH and Iran so that Muslims will pay him in gas for his car for life in return for allowing them to rape all those white-skinned shapely Israeli chicks wearing bikinis-- often topless-- and sexy sun glasses on the beach. After years of better living through psycho-chemistry, having found Jesus, these white Middle Americans can now totally understand the Obama-Islamofascist link, following GW Bush's logic-- thinking with his gut-- for he too lived better through psycho-chemistry, probably longer than most of them (to 40 y/o). Joe Moe, Bill Clinton's (post open heart surgery) guru on "foreign-policy for dummies" was telling Democrats over and over again, since the day Kerry lost in 2004 that we must advocate another "Crusade" to save Jerusalem from the dark skin heathens in order to win back the White House. And no one could better lead us in this than the American Joan D'Arc, Hillary Clinton. Finally, Bill insisted, the 60s drugs fried through psycho-chemistry WHITE Republican brains and similarly 60s fried WHITE Democrat brains would invariably find common ground, uniting pot-belly to pot-belly, to bring Hillary d'Arc to the WHITE HOUSE with their WHITE votes and then support her in the victorious "obliteration" of Iran for Jesus. Best of all, all of us Viagra Stallions wouldn't have to go to fight. We only need to drive drunk out of our minds in a pre-war tailgating with our SUVs, driving our kids to finish the job Viagra Bubba and his Veep (who couldn't handle Viagra so he got a pacemaker to play with instead) started in Iraq by marching on Iran to "obliterate" it. (Hillary sure got smart in them there colleges, I never heard of that fancy word "obliterated" until I met her). But what about our kids going to fight these Middle East War? Well, first of all, IT AIN'T MY KIDS GOING TO IRAN BECAUSE WE'VE NOW GOT US AN ALL-VOLUNTEER ARMY, so leave it to the niggers to enlist, they like the army. Secondly, I'm more than willing to shake the hand of any man in uniform I see and say, "thank you for your service," so long as he doesn't try to date my daughter or causes the raising of my taxes to pay his GI Bill.
SO FOLKS, THERE YOU'VE GOT IT. HILLARY TRIED TO WARN US THAT HER VICTORY IS INEVITABLE AND OBAMA MEANS SURE DEFEAT. But, alas, as they say, KIDS WILL BE KIDS and more than at anytime in American history those kids of the same age as the dumb fools who volunteered for service-- damned fools, everyone knows that you NEVER volunteer, you just stay in your job, pinch your pennies and when you have enough you switch to the Republican Party so you can apply for a management job at the local plant. And just to rebel against us psycho-chemically enlightened parents, who later found Jesus along with our fellow pot bellied Boomer good-old-boys, our kids-- instead of listening to us and voting for our menopausal honey of a heroine that could chug-a-lug whiskey with a beer chaser as good as any of us-- they went off and joined up with a nigger anti-Christ named Obama (openly) and Hussein (secretly),proving with his name that he's a Muslim terrorist demon! I tell you, these damned kids just won't realize that me and their mom-- whom I met at an acid-concert in 1964 and since watched her, like a good investment, grow, grow, grow in size-- will never vote for that skinny nigger...He's so skinny, he must have AIDS! No, no, no, we're all voting for a real White American Christian hero (an American Methuselah), John McCain, great grandson of Ronald Reagan and son of GW Bush, a great president who will never allow the Supreme Court to force us to leave our wives and marry a queer!
Well, my dear fellow Democrats, here's a piece of advice from a former Republican. Let John McCain have those people. Don't be losers like Hillary, who twisted herself into a pretzel just to fit the image these good-old-boys-- friends of Bill-- and "their women" wanted; in the end she discovered that there are not enough of them in America to get her the nomination. There's only enough to keep Rush Limbaugh in expensive cigars and illegal hydrocodon pills. Fact is, it is THE WHITE GOOD-OLD-BOY BOOMERS' children that came to believe that a NEW TOMORROW is possible, even for today's America of boomers as it languishes in a political intensive care unit.
In fact, to be quite honest, most of us oldies will swallow our prejudices now to proudly vote for a wonderful nigger as our next president, overcoming our prejudices as we did in the 60s when we made Congress pass the Equal Rights Amendment.
\
As for the 100 years war with Islam, just imagine, if the pilot's cabin doors had been locked on 9/11-- there would have never been these eight horrible years of totally incompetent war to steal Iraq's oil. Unable to expose the real reason for our neocon "World War IV" to "democratize" the Arabs-- actually we weren't so interested in liberating them as we were in liberating their oil-- Rumsfled, WHO PUSHED THIS WAR INTO A FAIT ACCOMPLI ON BUSH, even though the President clearly said to him at Camp David: "NO, NO WAR IN IRAQ UNTIL AFGHANISTAN IS FINISHED"; so Rumsfeld had to run the war unplanned and on the cheap. McCain felt it was a crime for a Secretary of Defense to force a war on the President for the only because he, Rumsfeld, can-- Rumsfeld, happened to have the Bush National Guard records "missing" from the Pentagon. But Bush, unlike his dad, kept his word to these, yesterday's drug-trippers, today's entrepreneurs, promising them that funded his campaigns: MORE blood, MORE death, MORE widows, MORE orphans, MORE disabled vets....BUT NO MORE TAXES!!!!
Hillary's dream of becoming America's first woman President died because she listened to Joe Moe and Bill (as did Cong. Ford of Tennessee and lost) and, in Baghdad on a tour with McCain, waived her head with that famous nod of approval of hers as McCain declared Iraq won-- that was 2006... Soon after Bush admitted that we were losing and he so chose "a new strategy": A SURGE OF MORE OF THE SAME!
Because Hillary let herself be identified with that defeat, she will never be President. Had she begun with the position on Iraq with which she ended, she would have become President next January. And all the disgruntled post-menopausal white "hard working" women that Hillary refers to should not, therefore, interpreted Hillary's loss as just another turn of the screw in the sad fate of women in our society. They should not plan to stay home on election day or vote for McCain in spite. THESE LADIES SHOULD REACH DEEP WITHIN THEIR DEEP WITHIN-- WAY BELOW THE RAGE AND BITTERNESS--TO REACH THEIR MATERNAL INSTINCTS AND APPLY THESE INSTINCTS TO THE MOMS AND DADS FORCED TO FIGHT THAT ENDLESS WAR IN ENDLESS TOURS BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS TO GIVE THEM A BREAK AND TAKE THEIR PLACE BEFORE THEY COME HOME IN A BOX, CREATING MORE WIDOWS AND ORPHANS, OR COME HOME SO DISABLED THAT THE FAMILIES THEY HOPED TO TAKE CARE OF WILL HAVE TO FOREVER TAKE CARE OF THEM.
McCain is a hollow man. One need not go into his Vietnam POW experience as irreverently and maliciously as the "Swifties" did to Kerry. That only muddles today's critical war with a war that finished forty years ago. All you need do is look at his chameleon career as a politician and all the shady deals he was involved with at the "take" level.
McCain is no longer a man in charge of his life. He wants the Presidency more than he wants his freedom. So he has sold his soul to the Republican Party. That Party won in 2004 by playing on fear. By 2006 that no longer worked, leaving them only one card to play in 2008: HATE. The Clintons witlessly started the ball rolling by bringing up the race issue against Obama. But that's nothing compared to what the Republicans will try to do now that the Clintons made it OK to make it an issue. McCain needs every pot-bellied boomer he can get. And when they see that numerically that's not enough, the Republican Party will play the: don't you HATE having a NIGGER occupy your WHITE House? After Bill Clinton desecrated the WHITE House getting a blow-job in it, they will tell you, Obama will desecrate it putting his BLACK skin all over the WHITE House. Race will be played against Obama as it was against Ford in Tennessee-- but America is not as racist as Tennessee. Still, that's about what the case will be. You saw it in the desperate Republican adds in the last three recent special Southern Congressional races.
THIS FALL ELECTION *WILL* BE A RACE WAR. There's only one way to beat it. It is to spot your fellow Americans and then go talk personally as a Democrat and as a fellow American to every decent American in America, asking them if they rather choose color over change, principles and ability?
IF YOU DO THAT, OBAMA WILL WIN, BECAUSE THERE ARE MORE DECENT PEOPLE IN AMERICA THAT POT-BELLIED BOOMERS RACISTS. It is a sad fact that we can't brush under the rug the fact that Bill Clinton tried to revive the very race-rage he quelled as President in the 1990s by improving then implementing the Gingrich welfare reforms. Alas, once again, he will go down in history much as those who brought him to court during his presidency charged him. That's sad because he's no racist and he is in no way a dumb hick. Neither is Hillary. But when you dress in manure and smell like manure, people are not going to try to scratch off the manure to see if there's a prince or princess beneath.
Obama has been nothing more than a catalyst-- a catalyst to hope in the millions of younger Americans who had secretly whispered under their breath while watching the news every day and the thousands of commercials that went with it: FUCK AMERICA, FUCK AMERICANS.....
***BUT as they meet the returning vets of their generation who enlisted after 9/11 and the good people, white-black-brown-yellow, who saw in Obama a NEW America, one that breaks with Bush and his army of short-sighted entrepreneurs, they will be infected with the "good news." And so the good news will spread: THERE IS A NIGGER OUT THERE NAMED OBAMA WHO WILL MAKE THE WHITE HOUSE SPARKLING WHITE AGAIN BY CLEANING OUT THE BUSHIT...WHO WILL ***CHANGE***AMERICA FROM A POLARIZED TO A UNITED AMERICA AND WILL LEAD IT IN THE STRUGGLE TO SAVE US ALL BY SAVING THE PLANET. So I suggest that you tell any of these hate mongering Republican operatives who confronts you with the idea that OBAMA IS A NIGGER: YES, he is a nigger, YES, I am a nigger, yes, we Democrats are all niggers....And yes, on election day ALL Americans will be niggers. You can say that with confidence, for in the minds of all those for whom Obama is a nigger, there is this gnawing realization that MOST AMERICANS ARE NIGGERS supporting NIGGER OBAMA to lead us through an historic change so that we can survive and leave our children a better planet. If to do that we have to leave them a nigger planet, so be it; for I, like MOST Americans would be extremely proud-- as I haven't been for a long time-- to tell people, yes, this is MY nigger president and yes, I am a proud citizen of nigger America. That's what the Republican operatives fear most: that most Americans will say: yes, we have met Obama and we are all niggers, just like Obama....The NIGGER whom YOU elected to occupy your WHITE House!

Just another question about pardons, and maybe someone will catch this in the am, but doesn't a person have to be convicted of a crime before they can be pardoned? A President can't just pardon someone before they've even been charged?
Posted by margotb822 on May 19, 2008 at 11:31 PM
Danielet, you are very sick. I am offended by your use of words that you know are inappropriate. If you are the same person complaining the other night about being fired for your speech, I can see why. To be a civilized society one must accept social rules and cues.
Don't stare at people, don't take cuts in line, don't steal your neighbors newspaper, don't let your 11 year old kids hunt for easter eggs in 8 year old age group, don't use words that inflict hurt purposefully that society has long ago deemed not acceptable.
Posted by newsjunkie on May 19, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Margotb822, I'm no expert, but pardoning yourself and others for nothing must be impossible. Only after a verdict is reached can one be pardoned. By pardoning ones self for any future findings would be an admission of guilt and would require investigation into what exactly they are pardoning themselves for, that they know, that the public doesn't know. Congress could enact a law and fix it whatever it is.
You know there is a group of distinguished republicans, not in bed with this group, that is very concerned about the constitution, civil rights and what has been done to our country by this administration. I wish I could re-call the groups name but they were on C-Span last year. Obama needs to reach out to these people. It appeared that they love this country and are very worried.
Posted by newsjunkie on May 20, 2008 at 12:13 AM
What's up, Dems?
Hi Margot. Yes, I think they must be charged and convicted first. I don't think Bush can pardon his whole Administration before they are charged... but Cheney's team in probably working on a way to do it... like the Post-Patriot Pre-Pardon Act.
Don't let ramblings upset you. McCain, Rush, Faux News... now that's a different story.
Interesting piece on Michelle Obama's "proud" comment on Anderson Cooper 360. I don't think much about it, but I can tell that Republicans will use it as a wedge in middle America. Republicans will repeat it to make her look unpatriotic. It's not the best way to woo the independents.
CNN's SR interviewed Obama's Sr. Foreign policy adviser, Mrs. Rice. Hello! Rice? She did pretty good. But the white dress with black lines on it was not the most professional dress for an interview, IMO. I wonder how many people wondered if she's related to Condi?

The Case of the Bogus Petition (and the dodgy "Swindle")
Over the past several years a petition against the IPCC's views and the need for the Kyoto Protocol has circulated, claiming to be signed by 19,000 American scientists.
The petition is a hoax, intended to spin the idea that there is no scientific basis for claims about global warming.
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists of the USA:
“The Marshall Institute co-sponsored with the OISM (Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine) a deceptive campaign -- known as the Petition Project -- to undermine and discredit the scientific authority of the IPCC and to oppose the Kyoto Protocol. Early in the spring of 1998, thousands of scientists around the country received a mass mailing urging them to sign a petition calling on the government to reject the Kyoto Protocol. The petition was accompanied by other pieces including an article formatted to mimic the journal of the National Academy of Sciences. Subsequent research revealed that the article had not been peer-reviewed, nor published, nor even accepted for publication in that journal and the Academy released a strong statement disclaiming any connection to this effort and reaffirming the reality of climate change. The Petition resurfaced in 2001.”
In fact, American experts agree with the IPCC on its fundamental assertions, as indicated by the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) support for the June 2005 joint declaration.
The Union of Concerned Scientists' website has an excellent summary of the "skeptic" organizations, their tactics, and other hoaxes such as the Leipzig Declaration.

If we do not provide health care for all of our citizens, we are morally corrupt as a nation.
If we do not take care of out poor and our elderly we have no compassion.
If we do not care for our veterans, who have served us with such valor and distinction, then we will know that our moral fiber is lost and we are nothing but a third world nation governed by greedy dictators.
We, as a nation are better than this! This is why this is the most important election in our nation's history.
Reclaim and rebuild your country and regain it's lost promise.

In your editing for your view of Democratic party censorship you have taken most of my postings off, but left this one with the "N" words all over it. It rants of biases that the Democratic does not need. why did you not take this one off, because of it diversive content. I will repost one you took off.
Obama is filling his audience with crowds of over 70,000 in speeches and some say he is unelectable. When is the last time a politician drew a 70,000 person crowd? Can you see him filling baseball stadiums in America in places like New York, California, and other Democratic areas as the Democratic contender. Why going overseas he will have John F Kennedy overflowing crowds all over Europe and the World. America image being repaired where Bush destroyed them.
Obama you need to have a large crowds in a stadium, or large arena in California and New York to prove that you can deliver those states to the Democrats. Do not say anything about the other candidate, but in strength attack McCain with facts to show your leadership abilities.
Now what is wrong with this?

John --
We're poised to reach a major milestone tomorrow.
When the votes are counted in Oregon and Kentucky, we could secure a majority of delegates elected by the voters.
A clear majority of elected delegates will send an unmistakable message -- the people have spoken, and they are ready for change.
As we near victory in one contest, the next challenge is already heating up. President Bush and Senator McCain have begun coordinating their attacks on Barack Obama in an effort to extend their failed policies for a third term.
Last week, President Bush used a speech before the Israeli parliament to launch an unprecedented partisan attack. Senator McCain echoed his divisive misrepresentation of Barack's foreign policy vision, engaging in the same fear-mongering and distortion.
Barack responded forcefully -- you can see a preview of the tough responses he will always give to GOP attacks in this video:
Video: Barack's Response
http://my.barackobama.com/newforeignpolicy
We're just 16 pledged delegates away from reaching an absolute majority.
Be sure to tune in tomorrow night to see Barack's speech.
Thank you,
David

john,
Last week, we told you how John McCain raised over $9 million for his campaign and the Republican National Committee in 48 hours.
Yesterday, he was in Washington, D.C., attending back-to-back receptions for his top donors. The night ended with a "Spring Gala" dinner for those willing to pay thousands of dollars to wine and dine with John McCain and his top campaign staff.
The RNC has boasted it plans to raise at least $120 million to support John McCain. That's why Republican operatives are working around the clock to bank as much money as they can, while they can. They're gearing up for a Swift Boat offensive on our nominee.
Make a contribution now -- and help match what the Republicans are raising:

'Bush intends to attack Iran before the end of his term'US President George W. Bush intends to attack Iran in the upcoming months, before the end of his term, Army Radio quoted officials in Jerusalem as saying Tuesday.
The official claimed that a senior member of the president's entourage said during a closed meeting that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were of the opinion that military action was called for.
However, the official continued, "the hesitancy of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice" was preventing the administration from deciding to launch such an attack on the Islamic Republic.
The report said that according to assessments in Israel, recent turmoil in Lebanon, where Hizbullah de facto established control of the country, was advancing an American attack.
Should the Republicans seem to loose the White House to Obama, will they unleash on Iran, hoping to keep Obama wrapped up in an Iran Bush quagmire, rather than going after Bush and Co. attrocities against the Constitution. They know with Obama distracted with another Bush Blunder Mission Accomplished that he will not dare attack them in Congress or the Federal Courts while America is at War.
Democrats will be forced to support the Republic War Machine in order to solve the solution and get out of Bush's Intelligence Wars. In the end they will blame the whole thing on the Democrats using Faux News saying Obama was not prepared. (How can one defend oneself with Bush Intelligence?
Actually our best defense are those Real Republicans with HeArts in the White House, who are more patriots than Bush Republicans intimidators.
With the Iran War the price of gas will reach $6, and Bush will have succeeded in bankrupting all of America's dreams. Why would a President take pleasure in the destruction of the Middle Class.
Obama set McCain spinning by asking him if Bush has plans to attack Iran before the end of his term "At Will" of Executive Privilege of Totalitarian power. If he say no, you win if he does. If he says yes, you win.
Should after the elections Obama wins, there should be safeguards put in to protect America interests from a President's "At Will" attitude as being a "War" President", remember his vengeance to Iraq.
Keep Bush War funding under "Homework" control.

Morning JohnBoy and cate,
I heard the neocons complaining yesterday that dealing with Global Warming will raise our utility bills. As if they haven't been raised enough already by chimpenfuhrer and his greedy pirate friends.
They are rolling out the scare tactics again.
Now that I think about it, I think that if bush cannot pardon his sick followers unless there are charges then I can see why Nancy Pelosi does not want to start impeachment procedings. If we start bringing his gang to justice, he will simply pardon them all next January.
If we wait until he is out of office then bring war crimes charges against bush and cheney it will be too late for him to pardon KKKarl, rice, gonezales, ad infinitum. Does this make sense?

At midnight on January 19, 2009, bush and cheney need to be arrested and locked up so they cannot escape to Paraguay and dubai respectively.

Given the mood of the public, only complete madmen would attack Iran in an effort to keep the Republican Party in office. But both Bush and Cheney do appear to be madmen, totally out of touch with reason.
I hate to say this, but it is my belief that if they attack Iran without Congressional approval, they may both be dragged from office and hanged.
I would hate to see this happen, but as they have so often done, they continue to arrogantly and incorrectly fail to understand the depth of the public rage that is continuing to simmer just below the surface.
The People will only stand for so much criminality and then they may openly revolt.
If Bush and Cheney were wise, they would quietly ride out the remainder of their terms and retire to Paraguay and leave it to the rest of us to clean up the mess, the disaster they have created.

Maybe all those generals who resigned because of bush's illegal war can go to the White House and make a citizens arrest. At the same moment they can take cheney into custody.

JohnBoy,
Are there some good sturdy trees in front of the Capitol building? That would draw quite a crowd. In the meantime all the rest of the neocons would scurry for cover like a bunch of rats.
I'll bet all the repukes who supported hoover ran for cover when Roosevelt took office and we didn't hear from them again until 1953.
How can these people look in the mirror and not see pure evil in their own faces. They must not have a conscience and they are not true Americans.

Talking about mclame raising money, I wonder how many lobbyists attended the big fundraiser. Are they required to identify those in attendance at these fund raisers. It would be very interesting to see how many lobbyists attended. I'll wager they were all lobbyists. If so this should be illegal and the Dems should expose this fact.

Well, off to work. The sewer extension was finally completed yesterday. I am still waiting for the street lights. The contractor hasn't been back in a month. It's a hell of a way to run a business.

Can a President pardon themselves or the Whole White House?
Can a President pardon his administration from future litigation before being charged?
Can a President pardon all companies "At Will" who have had dealings with them?
If one is pardoned by a President can that still be forced to appear before Congress and have to admit to their actions or do they have immunity from telling anything.
Last, if given a pardon, I assume they can still be tried in the International Courts, is this true?

Alabama sheriffs feed inmates on $1.75 a dayBIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Back in the day of chain gangs, Alabama passed a law that gave sheriffs $1.75 a day to feed each prisoner in their jails, and the sheriffs got to pocket anything that was left over. More than 80 years later, most Alabama counties still operate under this system, with the same $1.75-a-day allowance, and some sheriffs are actually making money on top of their salaries.
But exactly how much is something of a mystery because state auditors do not have access to sheriffs' private accounts.
How could anyone turn a profit feeding men and women for an entire day on less than the price of a Coke and a bag of Fritos? Sheriffs practice Depression-style frugality and rely on such things as day-old bread, cut-rate vegetables and cheap inmate labor
The Sheriffs of Washington also have their own private corporate accounts that are free from prying eyes and the IRS auditors.

As I understand it, you do not want to charge them before they leave office. In that way, they can not give themselves pardons. The Bush regime has tried as much as possible to insulate itself from future legal actions after leaving office, but I feel that they are still accountable, especially to the world court for crimes against humanity.

isn't it amazing then, that this must be the biggest cult in the world? EVERY country and it's leaders believe in Global warming. the majority of REAL integral scientists believe . The US White house has been caught forbidding reports by legitimate agencies and government offices from revealing the truth about global warming. The Nobel Peace Prize committee comprised of some the most brilliant minds around all rewarded Al Gore and others for their work on Global Warming and the threat it is.
Yet one old man in the backwoods, desperately tries to scrape up bogus, right wing, illigitimate sites to feed his Narcissism ! He must continue with his insane googling of these biased, right wing sites . He soon will be the last person in this world, standing on his soapbox, saying that Global Warming is not real, because the rest will finally quit being duped.
(it makes me laugh every time I hear McCain talk about having to do something about Global Warming. Even 3rd party candidates. THIS is who nuts like the trolls have to choose from!) hahaha

Five things to watch in Kentucky
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Hillary Clinton is counting on Kentucky to give her more ammunition to make her case to the superdelegates who control the fate of her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
If the state gives her a victory anywhere close to the 41-point landslide she got out of neighboring West Virginia last week, Team Clinton will have considerably more evidence to buttress its argument about her electability.
To counter this, I say a picture is worth a thousand words. Look at the 70,000 to 80,000 at the Obama Rally in Oregon. Can you see another candidate generating these crowds here and worldwide in such Democratic Party pride. Second to have the Senator from West Virginia who grew up in segregation and for a while was a KKK member to come out and endorse Obama as the best choice for the Democratic Party was just unbelievable. And I ask you who will make the biggest change in the White House.

dlester, this is an article on US pardons. I would assume that a world court, should they ever have enough nerve, could find Bush and Cheney guilty of War crimes. But I look at all these "Executive Privilege" rights that Bush has given himself and his staff, all in the name of a phoney 'war on terror" and wonder if he could not get out of any charges.
Pardons and clemency in the United States
See also: List of people pardoned by a United States president
In the United States, the pardon power for Federal crimes is granted to the President by the United States Constitution, Article II, Section 2, which states that the President:
shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.
The Supreme Court has interpreted this language to include the power to grant pardons, conditional pardons, commutations of sentence, conditional commutations of sentence, remissions of fines and forfeitures, respites and amnesties.[1] All federal pardon petitions are addressed to the President, who grants or denies the request. Typically, applications for pardons are referred for review and non-binding recommendation by the Office of the Pardon Attorney, an official of the Department of Justice. Since 1977, presidents have received about 600 pardon or clemency petitions a year[2] and have granted around ten percent of these[3], although the percentage of pardons and reprieves granted varies from administration to administration (fewer pardons have been granted since World War II).[4]
The pardon power was controversial from the outset; many Anti-Federalists remembered examples of royal abuses of the pardon power in Europe, and warned that the same would happen in the new republic. However, Alexander Hamilton makes a strong defense of the pardon power in The Federalist Papers, particularly in Federalist No. 74. It is worthy of note that Hamilton called for something like an elective monarch at the Philadelphia Convention. In his final day in office, George Washington granted the first high-profile Federal pardon to leaders of the Whiskey Rebellion.
Many pardons have been controversial; critics argue that pardons have been used more often for the sake of political expediency than to correct judicial error. One of the more famous recent pardons was granted by President Gerald Ford to former President Richard Nixon on September 8, 1974, for official misconduct which gave rise to the Watergate scandal. Polls showed a majority of Americans disapproved of the pardon and Ford's public-approval ratings tumbled afterward. He was then narrowly defeated in the presidential campaign, two years later. Other controversial uses of the pardon power include Andrew Johnson's sweeping pardons of thousands of former Confederate officials and military personnel after the American Civil War, Jimmy Carter's grant of amnesty to Vietnam-era draft evaders, George H. W. Bush's pardons of 75 people, including six Reagan administration officials accused and/or convicted in connection with the Iran-Contra affair, Bill Clinton's pardons of convicted FALN terrorists and 140 people on his last day in office - including billionaire fugitive Marc Rich, and George W. Bush's commutation of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's prison term.

In Senator Barack Obama, we have watched the birth, growth and coming of age of a political giant in American politics. He continues to inspire and to lead.
What can I compare him with?
