This is from a rumsfeld speech in 2006

There was a strange innocence about the world. Someone recently recalled one U.S. senator's reaction in September of 1939 upon hearing that Hitler had invaded Poland to start World War II. He exclaimed: “Lord, if only I had talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided!”

bush's speech today

Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: "Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided." We have an obligation to call this what it is – the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.
What neither tells you is that the senator was a republican! His name is William Edgar Borah.

Here's some stuff on him
page in "On American character"

As Germany began to annex neighboring nations, Borah grew more erratic and unreasonable in his assessment of European politics. He derided British visitors who came "to spread their propaganda" and attacked France and England for veiling their national interests in the language of democracy and dictatorship. Worse still, although Borah despised any dictatorial pretensions in Roosevelt, the Idahoan revealed his admiration for Hitler. "There are so many great sides to him," Borah said of Hitler in 1938.42 After the Fuehrer had taken the Suedetenland, Borah emoted, "Gad, what a chance Hitler has! If he only moderates his religious and racial intolerance, he would take his place beside Charlemagne. He has taken Europe without firing a shot." Even after the war had started in 1939, a war Borah had repeatedly stated in public would never happen and that he curiously labeled as "phony" after its inception, the Senator lamented, "Lord, if I could only have talked with Hitler, all this might have been avoided."43

rumsfeld apparently ripped it off from charles krauthammer who used it against Ned Lamont.

Good morning, folks.

Iraq and Afghanistan must have fallen off the face of the earth as there has been a complete lack of coverage by the MSM this past week. But then there is always this unhappy story of a forced march...

Least we not forget, this is the real reason we are at risk by radical Islamic terrorists.

Palestinians mark 1948 uprooting By DALIA NAMMARI, Associated Press Writer

RAMALLAH, West Bank - Palestinians marked the 60th anniversary of their uprooting with rallies, sirens and black flags Thursday — an annual ritual that turned even darker this year because of crippling internal divisions, diminishing hopes for independence and the stark contrast to Israel's all-out birthday bash.

The memorial coincided with a high-profile visit to Israel by President Bush as part of Israel's 60th independence day celebration.

Bush's embrace of Israel at a time when the Palestinians were mourning was bound to further harm the tainted U.S. image in the Palestinian areas and across the Arab world. Thursday's events commemorated the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the 1948 war over Israel's creation, or what the Palestinians call their "nakba," Arabic for catastrophe...

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080515/ap_on_re_mi_ea/israel_palestinians

Displacing hundred of thousands of people in Palestine over our guilt from allowing the Holocaust to happen in Europe was just repeating the same mistake in another region of the world.

You can defend the present while ignoring the past, make excuses, blame others...or face up to the injustice.

A better solution is seriously working for a lasting compromise that doesn't leave an entire cultural/ethnic group in refugee camps/ghettoes for 60 years...and then continue to support your clients who regularly lob missiles at those who attempt to break through the walls in the prison you helped build to "contain the problem".

I suppose the walls also serve to shield your children's eyes from the effects of imposing fuel and food sanctions of a people during the middle of winter. This is a human travesty and we have no reason to be involved in it in any way.

Israel needs to make peace with the people displaced 60 years ago along with the third and fourth generation who will never understand why the world let it happen.

It's a fester wound that is showing signs of developing gangrene within the surrounding areas. Those who continue to ignore the root cause will have no one to blame but themselves when various limbs are removed.

And we will have no reason to insist that we have the right to act as the surgeon. We should feel enough guilt instead for what we've done to Iraq.

And when are we going to face up to what we allowed Bush to do to that nation and its people...and remove ourselves from where we do not belong?

Gotta run. later.

The neocons' continued nostalgia for Hitler is quite touching. Perhaps it eases the lingering doubts that they may be following in his footsteps...and need to cover their tracks?

All tyrants use the same excuses.

Good morning from Northern California
Today is my birthday and it is supposed to be 105 here today. Since I am a sunlover, I am not sad about this as are many who don't like the heat.

here is what I was wondering this morning----along with my concerns over election fraud that you have all heard me spout out about for some time now---I think it is time we vote on Sat. or Sun. and this would be a good year to demand this change. We have so many new voters ---including many working 12 hr days, professionals, and college people that we need to get to the polls in November.

Who is served when we hold onto so many archaic rules and laws that no longer apply to the original reason they were passed (to serve the majority of the peoples)
Let's

Here is a little history:
For much of our history, America was a predominantly agrarian society. Law makers therefore took into account that November was perhaps the most convenient month for farmers and rural workers to be able to travel to the polls.

The fall harvest was over, (remember that spring was planting time and summer was taken up with working the fields and tending the crops) but in the majority of the nation the weather was still mild enough to permit travel over unimproved roads.

Why Tuesday?
Since most residents of rural America had to travel a significant distance to the county seat in order to vote, Monday was not considered reasonable since many people would need to begin travel on Sunday. This would, of course, have conflicted with Church services and Sunday worship.

Why the first Tuesday after the first Monday? Lawmakers wanted to prevent election day from falling on the first of November for two reasons. First, November 1st is All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics. Second, most merchants were in the habit of doing their books from the preceding month on the 1st. Apparently, Congress was worried that the economic success or failure of the previous month might prove an undue influence on the vote!

thanks for being here and addressing my thoughts

Can there be any doubt that Joe Lieberman will be the Zell Miller of this year's Republican Convention? Here he is smearing Barack Obama re Hamas. He is entitled to his views about the Middle East, but for the past five years he has taken those Likudnik views a step beyond propriety--saying that those who disagree with him (i.e.--the Democratic Party, which nominated him for the Vice Presidency in 2000) are counseling "defeat" and "surrender." And now this.

Lord love a duck---
As much as I abhore the embarrassment that this man has caused our citizens, and my first reaction was to tell him to just SHUT UP,
upon reflection, let's now encourage him to come out and talk as much as possible, celebrating the nails he is putting in his coffin.

I got an e-mail from aquaintance in Britain, very very angry, (but feeling sorry for We the People)------.

Time to stop trying to shut him up and encourage him to come out and speak as much as possible.

We have been ashamed that he "doesn't get it", now let's celebrate "he doesn't get it" as he will help us take more seats in November.

Maybe just a different perspective

A couple of the new national polls out today point to a lot of Dems who seem to think Hillary Clinton would be a fine running mate. The latest numbers from Gallup point to a majority of rank-and-file Dems who like the idea of an Obama/Clinton ticket.

I don’t doubt that Clinton enjoys an enormous base of support within the party. That should be pretty obvious — she’s won more 15 million Democratic votes at this point. For her most enthusiastic supporters, having Clinton on the ticket, even in the #2 slot, might very well be better than nothing.

But I thought I’d take a minute to note that polls about running mates don’t mean a whole lot.

I am still waiting to hear what a "WIN" in iraq means! Will they be living side by side again, like under Hussein? (hmmmm, why didn't we just leave well enough alone)

Will they be letting US oil companies control and own their oil fields?

Will there be permanent US spy bases all around the perimiter of the Iraqi border?

Will the Middle East now all look fondly and lovingly on the US and hope that the US will occupy them also?

Will Israel be safer than it is today? (Doubt it!)

Lieberman On Bush Comparing Democrats To Nazi-Appeasers: ‘The President Got It Exactly Right’

Delivering an address before the Israeli Knesset today, President Bush said that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Democrats favor a policy of appeasement toward terrorists.

Obama quickly responding, criticizing Bush for using the “60th anniversary of Israel’s independence to launch a false political attack.” As MSNBC reported, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), a strong supporter of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), has also now issued a statement, saying that he wholeheartedly agrees with Bush’s comments

OMG,Bush is now comparing the Hamas to Hitler. I am guessing to continue the argument that he should start yet another war in Iran.

Bush is a moron

"We have heard this foolish delusion before," Bush said in remarks to Israel's parliament, the Knesset. "As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: 'Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.' We have an obligation to call this what it is the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."

I agree, we do have an obligation to call this what it is.

Mr. Bush, Hitler and nazi-germany unprovokedly attacked countries.

You, Sir, unprovokedly attacked Iraq, which neither was a threat to the United States and never provoked an attack from the United States.

Mr. Bush, Hitler and nazi-germany rounded up innocent jews and held them and tortured them in concentration camps.

You, Sir, rounded up iraqi's and muslim nationals and tortured them in Abu Gharab and Gitmo.

Mr. Bush, Hitler ran campaigns to scare German citizens from the threat of the jews.

You, Sir, campaigned scare tactics towards American citizens from the threat of terrorists.

Mr. Bush, Hitler ran a secret government that was based on propaganda rather than truth. They persecuted anyone that challenged their athority and fabricated lies to justify their action.

You, Sir, have done exactly that with our proud democacy.

Comparing the terrorists activities to Hitler, especially while lumping them all together and all but ignoring those that attacked us on 9/11, is the wrong analogy. It is your imperialistic, naccosistic, and your-either-with-us-or-against-us attitude which has you more on the path of Hitler than anyone in past generations. You have destroyed relations with all our allies, our good name around the world, and our economy at home.

I agree with Olbermann---- "JUST SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!!!!!!!!!"

McCain Sets Timetable For Getting Out Of Iraq

Senator McCain’s speech today gives a timetable for when US troops will leave Iraq if he becomes President. McCain went after former GOP rival Mitt Romney during the Florida primary, claiming his mention of timetables was equivalent to putting defeat into the hands of terrorists. Now the Senator is changing his tune.
Sen. John McCain will pledge today that most American troops will return home from Iraq by 2013 if he is elected president, a position that closely resembles the promises made by both of his potential Democratic rivals.
In a speech here this morning, McCain will say that only a small contingent of troops would remain in Iraq in non-combat roles beyond that date. He predicts that the drawdown will be possible because al Qaeda in Iraq will be defeated and a democratic government will be able to thrive in the war-torn country

(How many ways can you say FLIP FLOP !!!)

Bush’s golf story ‘doesn’t hold water.’»
In an interview with Politico’s Mike Allen, President Bush claimed he gave up golf after UN envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello was killed in Iraq. “I remember when de Mello, who was at the U.N., got killed in Baghdad…I was playing golf — I think I was in central Texas — and they pulled me off the golf course and I said, it’s just not worth it anymore to do,” Bush said. De Mello was killed on Aug. 19, 2003. The Washington Post’s Dan Froomkin reports today: “Bush’s story doesn’t hold water“:

[T]he Associated Press reported on Oct. 13, 2003, that he’d spent a “cool, breezy Columbus Day” playing “a round of golf with three long-time buddies.

“Bush played at Andrews Air Force Base with Clay Johnson, Office of Management and Budget deputy director, Richard Hauser, Department of Housing and Urban Development general counsel and another friend, Mike Wood.”

On that outing, he was typically full of what passes for good humor at the White House. The AP reported: “‘Fine looking crew you got there. Fine looking crew,’ Bush joked to reporters. ‘That’s what we’d hope for presidential coverage. Only the best.’

“He hit a couple of practice balls before flaring his tee-off shot into the right rough.”

This is part of an article that I found on truthout.org

"Representative Tom Davis, Republican of Virginia and former leader of his party's Congressional campaign committee, issued a dire warning that the Republican Party had been severely damaged, in no small part because of its identification with President Bush. Mr. Davis said that, unless Republican candidates changed course, they could lose 20 seats in the House and 6 in the Senate."

"They are canaries in the coal mine, warning of far greater losses in the fall, if steps are not taken to remedy the current climate," Mr. Davis said in a memorandum. "The political atmosphere facing House Republicans this November is the worst since Watergate and is far more toxic than it was in 2006."

Same-sex couples win the right to marry in California!

Today, California's highest court ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to marry is unconstitutional, granting loving, committed gay and lesbian couples the dignity and support their relationships have so long been denied.

Two words sum up how I feel at this moment: proud and determined.

I'm proud of Shannon Minter of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, who argued this case, and all the advocates who worked tirelessly to make this day possible. More than anything, I am proud of you and all of HRC's supporters who, rather than backing down in response to bigotry and hate, have continued this fight.

And I'm determined to make this win stick. Our right-wing opponents are using this moment to build a $10 million war chest for an amendment this November to ban same-sex marriage in California.

That's why we've set up a special fund to direct 100% of your gift today to this fight in California. Don't let them use our victory to get the upper hand.

This election cycle, while other groups have their eyes set on John McCain, we're keeping our eyes on President Bush... and the folks who made his failures possible.

President Bush's friends voted to keep funding the war. They voted for his tax cuts for oil companies and wealthy corporations. They voted to uphold his veto of children's health insurance.

By keeping the focus on President Bush, we're keeping the focus on the failures of eight years of conservative policies. We aren't going to let President Bush's friends distance themselves this year from his failed policies.

Just last week, Bush's chief strategist, Karl Rove, told the Washington Post:

Good afternoon, all.

Just passing by...

Happy Birthday, high.

The GOP says that their Brand is in trouble. It's actually the whole Franchise.

Incomptence and tap dancintg in public restrooms doesn't impress most voters...and that's the best the Republicans can produce since they sent all our manufacturing and high tech jobs overseas.

I love the current Republican campaign targeting working women.

The GOP has made it quite clear in the last 15 years that they think all women should be barefoot and pregnant...cleaning their mansions...not working good-paying jobs with health care benefits or access to affordable child care.

Let the Republicans try to "appease" working women with promises that they can eat have cake and eat it, too.

In reality, most mothers are having trouble stretching their household budgets to pay for eggs, milk, and flour...and the energy it costs to shop for the ingredients or bake them into a cake.

The GOP isn't your Betty Crocker/Pillsbury Doughboy sort of franchise. It's more like your Rambo/Twilight Zone political party.

Let female consumers beware of false advertising and all out fraud. The sub-prime disaster didn't happen by accident, ladies. The same GOP salesmen now appearing on your doorstep with flowers and platitudes encouraged that con job, too.

They should put a sign on the side of the bus that gives the lastest daily average for life's necessities and what they were when Bush took office.

As I browse around the internet and read the DNC's site and blogs, something strikes me as odd.

How in the hell could the republican party be precieved by any stretch of the imagination to be the party of the people?

The Democratic party has always been a champion of looking out for the little guy, standing up for the working class, and protecting the rights of the people under the constitution.

We, as a party, really need to get back to these core values, both in perception and reality. As I browse the DNC website it is full of negativity towards McCain and the Republican party. The problem is that you really have to dig to find out what the Democratic party will do for the people.

Too much negative, not enough positive.

I think there is a reason Obama is pulling in millions upon millions while the DNC only pulled in $6 million.

We, as a party, need to seriously advertise more why we are the party of the people, and what we will do for the people.

Because we help lift the poorest of people, not only here, but around the world, we should have the backing of religous ministries.

Because we stand against violence and promote responsible gun ownership, and protect both the environment and sportsmens rights, we should have the vote of the farmers, hunters and fishermen as well as sportmen groups.

Because we stand up for civil liberties and workers rights we should have the vote of the average blue collar worker and unions.

Because we want to cover all people with health care, we should have the support of the sick and injured and the doctors and nurses and those working in the medical field who really do care about the well being of others.

Unless you are rich, there is absolutely no reason to vote republican. They are not in anyone's best interest except the wealthy and big corporations.

Democrats are now and always have been the party of the people. We need to express this through positive messages to the people.

TMH,

Once a candidate is chosen, the Democratic Party and DNC come out with it's Platform, which outlines the things you are looking for.

In the meantime, the icons across the top of this screen, make many of the points. Adjenda, Our Party, People.

bush should not be allowed to come back to the U.S. and should be sent directly to the Hague to be tried for treason. How much more proof do we need.

"George Bush has appeared before a foregin government and attacked the presumptive Democratic nominee and likely 44th president of the United States. Politics should stop at the water's edge. If George Bush wants to jump back into the political fray, he can do so in his own country. But attacking the future leader of America in front of a foregin government is nothing less than an act of treason. If a Democrat were to appear before a foreign government and trash our country's leaders, we all know that the Republicans would be trotting out the "t" word."

Let's call out Bush's act for what it is: TREASON

Hi Veneita,

All one has to do is see the number of new voters who have come out in the millions to register to vote, the loss of 3 solid Republican seats just this last couple weeks, to understand that even Conservatives have had it with the Republican Party and it is on it's way out.

I read where they are afraid they will lose 6 of their Senate seats in November. Of the 21 Republican seats coming up, I will bet we get at least half of them. With the Republican Representatives resigning and saving themselves embarassment of loss, we shall pick up many more house seats.

Bush and McCain and their Desperate efforts to try and dupe and fool that last few remaining gullible public!

(Did you read Cheri Blair's new book notes, saying the night that Bush got in, she and Tony were filled with Dread ! the entire world was. )

Amen! What would ever make Bush think it is alright to trash talk other Americans on foriegn soil. Isn't this one of the issues they were trying, unsuccessfully since it wasn't true, against Clinton in 92.

That is yet another act of treason by this President.

What I find completely ironic is that the quote Bush used to slam the Democrats was one made by a Republican. Yes, a republican who loved communist USSR...we have a couple of schools named after him here.

I'll just take a wild guess and surmise that Bush and his Mini-me, McBush, had no idea where the quote came from. Maybe they should open a book sometimes...I know the internets are difficult for them with all those series of tubes.

This quote is on my Bush Countdown calendar:

"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many, what day it's gonna happen? It's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

--Presidential mom Barbara Bush, the day before the war in Iraq began, telling Diane Sawyer why she would not watch the war on television.

BTW, Barbara, the number of American deaths is: 4077.

Hello Mary. So noted. I guess you saw where Sen. Biden (D-DE) told the President exactly what he though of the President's Knesset speech.

I think accusing the President of treason though is a bit harsh. Talking out of your proverbial arse does not qualify as treason, IMHO.

Had to go to my old log in, the one I was using quit working.

Bush attacking Democrats with his own Intelligence is like his Mission Accomplished "Truth" build upon Bush "Lies." I think he has been smoking the gas that Cheney has been mixing with Halliburton water for Bush recession and Cheney inflation. How much does Cheney gas get to the dollar? About a third of what it did last year in Bush promises.

Bush's Middle East Peace Initiative is like another Bush failed policy. He has other people do his Home-Work like Congress does, and like Bush Blunders do, they fall apart in surges in failures called successes. While Bush continues to unload things with other people, so he can then blame them. It is this White House Enron ignorance of intimidation and denial.

So Democrats, what Bush dished out here lately needs for all Democrats to impeach his lies.

Obama & Edwards joined together with all the Democratic Party, in its diversity and equality of "We the people" doing our "Home-Work" in "Made in America" core of Constitutional values of our home’s Freedom and Democracy to lead this nation.

Bush's legacy is toilet paper being flushed. The stench is Global Warming melting the ice caps for polar drilling of Bush's natural gases.

President Bush committed political treason today

I've seen a lot of sad things in American politics in my lifetime -- the resignation of a president who became a national disgrace after he oversaw a campaign of break-ins and cover-ups, another who circumvented the Constitution to trade arms for hostages, and yet is now hailed as national hero. And those paled to what we have seen in the last seven years -- flagrant disregard for the Constitution, the launching of a "pre-emptive" war on false pretenses, and discussions about torture and other shocking abuses inside the White House inner sanctum.

But now it's come to this: A new low that I never imagined was even possible.

President Bush went on foreign soil today, and committed what I consider an act of political treason: Comparing the candidate of the U.S. opposition party to appeasers of Nazi Germany -- in the very nation that was carved out from the horrific calamity of the Holocaust. Bush's bizarre and beyond-appropriate detour into American presidential politics took place in the middle of what should have been an occasion for joy: A speech to Israeli's Knesset to honor that nation's 60th birthday.

But here's what he said:

Sandy, I respectfully disagree with your thesis. Under your logic, we Americans would be obligated to pack up and return to our ancestors nations of origin and leave the continent to the Native Americans.

...A better solution is seriously working for a lasting compromise that doesn't leave an entire cultural/ethnic group in refugee camps/ghettoes for 60 years...and then continue to support your clients who regularly lob missiles at those who attempt to break through the walls in the prison you helped build to "contain the problem"...

The Palestinians are in their situation because they refused to work with the Israelis after they were defeated in 1948. The Palestinians could've sued for peace and peacefully co-existed. Instead, they wanted to resist by force of arms. Then they want to come whining to the U.N. when Israel defends itself from their attempt to retake the land the Israelis took. If the Native Americans left their casinos, took up arms, and sent suicide types into DC, Dallas, Chicago, or wherever, what do you think the response of the U.S. Government should be?

...I suppose the walls also serve to shield your children's eyes from the effects of imposing fuel and food sanctions of a people during the middle of winter. This is a human travesty and we have no reason to be involved in it in any way...

It is my understanding the wall serves as a security barrier from the Palestinians who send suicide bombers into Israel for the express purpose of killing civilians. Not the IDF, mind you, but civilians. The same type of "innocents" that get harmed when Israel has to resort to these measures to keep the Palestinians from lobbing rockets across the border. The Palestinians are committing acts of terrorism, not those of a freedom fighter, IMHO.

...Israel needs to make peace with the people displaced 60 years ago along with the third and fourth generation who will never understand why the world let it happen...

Once the Palestinians come to terms with the fact that they've been defeated militarily, then, hopefully, they can make peace with the Israelis much like the Native Americans came to terms with their defeat here. Until the Palestinians recognize this, there will be conflict and Israel has every right to defend its citizens and what it regained in 1948 and 1967.

Fair enough, Pam. I've felt obligated to espouse a minority position a number of times here as you well know. This is just one of those times. I doubt either of us will lose any sleep over such a trviality. ;-)

However, for the record, I am in total agreement with Sen. Biden's (D-DE) rebuttal. Treason (political or otherwise)? That's a bit over the top for me. Bullsh*t? Hits the nail on the head.

Bob: I really believe that this administration has committed treason in multiple ways. This is very much a 'sore spot' for me.
Trashing the U.S. Constitution constitutes treason (claiming executive priv. when asked to explain to congress) As does 'selling out' a covert CIA agent whose contacts are more than likely now murdered. Cooking up false intelligence to lie to Congress and the American People to start a war of agression constitutes treason.
I will/would vote for anyone who promissed to devote all necessary resources to finding all of the evidence needed to charge and convict Bush, Cheney, Rove, etc. of high treason and once convicted, publically execute them. I am not normally in favor of the death penalty but in this case, I think that it is 100% appropriate.

I want a T-shirt on one side it says, "Bush is Republican." On the back it says, "So is Mission Accomplished in Bush's Intelligence of Katrina tears!"

I recommend that the DNC and/or Obama do a frontal attack on Bush being a Republican with ties to images attaching him to McCain. It can start out with, "We know who is talking for the whole Republican Party!"

I would love to have a t-shirt with "Bush is a Republican" with scattered terms on it like Civil Rights, Human Rights, Civil Liberties and other terms scattered about. How about Fiscal Responsibility? Nothing else but people would know his record on it. Global Warming, Koyoto Agreement, and others just scattered with the reader making the reasoning. Another cool idea is a Judicial scale with Bush's side weighted down while Civil Liberties side is light.

Democrats let US bring back our Constitutional homes blessed with Freedom and Democracy of Free Speech that will not be banned nor censored.
