The "work 20 weeks" caveat in that unemployment benefit bill is horse hockey. A friend of mine, during the "Reganomics" recession worked for 4 companies in one year. He'd hire on, work a couple of months and the outfit would go out of business. He was starting to feel like he was some kind of jinx.
More recently, during the IT bust, my son-in-law would get a job, and then next thing he knew, the job would be out-sourced.
There should be some kind of proviso if your job disappears out from under you.

Just What we need - more unemployment!

Many CEOS have visions of swirling pink slips
By JEANNINE AVERSA, AP Economics Writer 59 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Nearly one-third of the country's top executives expect to cut payrolls in the coming months, reflecting fallout from the housing bust as well as soaring energy prices.

At the same time, a survey by the Business Roundtable, released Wednesday, showed that most executives expect sales and capital investment to remain at current levels or even improve over the next six months.

Can you imagine 2,700 jobs disappearing in one month from 1 company? I'll bet the CRO gets a nice bonus for this.

OfficeMax Inc., the Naperville-based office supply store company, is cutting about 2,700 store management jobs this month.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - For the first time, White House hopeful Barack Obama leads his Republican rival John McCain in three of the biggest battlegrounds of November's election, according to a new poll Wednesday.

The surveys by Quinnipiac University also found independent voters are opposed to defeated primary contender Hillary Clinton running as Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket

FUCK BUSH AND MCCAIN. These losers don't have a clue and they are not fit to be sewer cleaners.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- With gasoline topping $4 a gallon, President Bush urged Congress on Wednesday to lift its long-standing ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, saying the United States needs to increase its energy production. Democrats quickly rejected the idea.

"There is no excuse for delay," the president said in a statement in the Rose Garden. With the presidential election just months away, Bush made a pointed attack on Democrats, accusing them of obstructing his energy proposals and blaming them for high gasoline costs. His proposal echoed a call by Republican presidential candidate John McCain to open the Continental Shelf for exploration

"Families across the country are looking to Washington for a response," Bush said.

Congressional Democrats were quick to reject the push for lifting the drilling moratorium, saying oil companies already have 68 million acres offshore waters under lease that are not being developed.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Bush's proposals "another page from (an)... energy policy that was literally written by the oil industry - give away more public resources."

Sen. Barack Obama, the Democrats' presumptive presidential nominee, rejected lifting the drilling moratorium that has been supported by a succession of presidents for nearly two decades.

There are two prohibitions on offshore drilling, one imposed by Congress and another by executive order signed by Bush's father in 1990. Bush's brother, Jeb, fiercely opposed offshore drilling when he was governor of Florida. What the president now proposes would rescind his father's decision - but the president took the position that Congress has to act first and then he would follow behind.

June 17 marks the date that gay and lesbian couples can marry legally in California, following a landmark ruling by the state’s Supreme Court in May that struck down the ban on same-sex marriage. The day will be marked by joyous celebrations and eager couples earning a right they have waited years to obtain.

Yet, the occasion will also be punctuated by the division it creates throughout the state…. [T]he Butte County clerk-recorder issued a June 11 news release saying her office will stop performing wedding ceremonies altogether — for gay and heterosexual couples. The Kern County clerk issued a June 4 release that she would do the same.

Calaveras county has decided to follow Butte’s and Kern’s lead, and will also stop performing marriages altogether.

It never occurred to me that conservatives would actually find a way to make marriages between gay couples affect marriages between straight couples. Kudos to their right-wing, hate-filled creativity!

If gay's can marry then it's just not worth it for anybody

WE NEED CHANGEs to this blog...

37
BlueinIdaho on June 18, 2008 at 03:32 PM

Obama in 2006:

Finally, we should reduce the risk of investing in renewable fuels by providing loan guarantees and venture capital to those entrepreneurs with the best plans to develop and sell biofuels. And we should create a market for renewable fuels by ramping up the renewable fuel standard and creating an alternative diesel standard in this country that together would blend 65 billion gallons of renewable fuels into the petroleum supply each year.

If we had taken all these steps decades ago, when the call for energy independence was first issued in this country, today we would be immune to the whims of oil-rich dictators and surging gas prices. And if we don't take these steps now, we will someday look back on today's $3 per gallon gasoline as the good ol' days. At that point, there won't be a tax rebate big enough, or a tax holiday long enough, to solve our problems.

38
BlueinIdaho on June 18, 2008 at 03:41 PM

virgo,

People in rural areas are going to be screwed too. We cannot get natural gas and I don't think people in rural areas cannot get natural gas. They are limited to heating oil or propane.

sad, but true...........

Sarkozy is taking the risk of meeting with a president at the end of his term, which, moreover, is certainly one of the worst in the entire history of the United States

What will history preserve of the George W. Bush presidency?
- Bad things! Three specifically. First, unilateralism, force that takes precedence over law. That's the philosophy of the Iraq invasion. To satisfy an almost personal revenge, George W. Bush flouted international law.

Then, the failure of the war against terrorism. The Iraq invasion had a counterproductive effect; that is, it provoked a feeling of hostility towards the United States from all Muslim countries. There are buds of insurrection in Afghanistan, fires poorly extinguished in Iraq.

Finally, under the Bush presidency, the fires of free-trade neo-liberalism were pushed to a level never before achieved under his predecessors. The rich got richer; the poor, poorer; deficits deepened.... The American economy is in recession and unemployment is on the rise.

The Bush administration is so lame, it's getting lectures from the communist governors of China on how best to regulate the market. What America needs is a clear strategy to sustain its middle class in a global economy that has just integrated over 2 billion workers in China, India and the former Soviet Union. Neither the Bush administration nor John McCain shows any sign of having ever thought seriously about this fundamental challenge to US security

Schlozman, an inept character who’s almost amusing in his clumsiness, has a very serious problem on his hands, which will not only lead to the likely criminal prosecution of a former top official in Bush’s Justice Department, but once again bring into focus how the Bush administration operated.

It’s easy to get confused over which comically corrupt Bushie is which, so let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane. It’s a funny story, actually….

Take no bullshit from the Republicans this time! SLAM them back !

Obama Campaign Rolls Out Richard Clarke To Hit Back At McCain's "Sept. 10th Mindset" Attack

Richard Clarke made an appearance as an Obama surrogate on a conference call with reporters moments ago, hitting back very hard against the McCain camp's claim today that Obama has a "September 10th mindset."

"I'm frankly disgusted at my friends on the McCain campaign," Clarke said, perhaps being a bit optimistic in describing those folks as still being "friends" of his. Clark referred to the McCain camp's claim that Dems only favor a law enforcement approach to terrorism, and accused McCain advisers of "completely and utterly distorting the record of that party."

"They said that about Bill Clinton," Clarke continued. "They said that about John Kerry. And now they're saying it about Barack Obama. I'd like them to show where in the record Barack Obama has favored only a law enforcement approach."

Good afternoon, all.

Nice to be able to see the comments before I post. Good work, guys.

McCain just can't think outside the box. He's stuck in the past...with Bush and his failed energy policies.

Coal and nuclear energy are not renewable, clean, or safe. We need viable alternatives. He's not willing to invest in our future.

McCain calls for building 45 new nuclear reactors

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Sen. John McCain called Wednesday for the construction of 45 new nuclear reactors by 2030 and pledged $2 billion a year in federal funds "to make clean coal a reality," measures designed to reduce dependence on foreign oil...

news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080618/ap_on_el_pr/mccain

I swear the only people who are contributing to McCain's campaign must be that grand old trinity of oil, coal, and nuclear energy. Why else is he changing his positions yet again.

McCain is so 20th century.

He always falls back on failed policies of the past that didn't work then and certainly won't work in a changing world.

He just isn't up to the task of leading this nation into the future.
